Will the carrier unlocked version work on verizon and is the bootloader unlocked? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I'm currently on the S7 Edge from Samsung on the Verizon network. I'm looking to purchase the Pixel XL 2 to use on the Verizon network. I plan on purchasing from the Google store and I was wondering which version of the phone should I purchase? I plan on rooting and loading a custom rom on the phone. Should I purchase the carrier unlocked version? Will the bootloader be unlocked and will the carrier unlocked version work with Verizon? I dont want to purchase the wrong phone and not have it work on Verizon. Seems like a stupid question and I apologize in advance. Will the Verizon only version from the Google Store have an unlocked bootloader?
Thanks!

I actually called Google and they said that the unlocked version will work on Verizon once you enter the sim...so I cancelled my original order of the Verizon version and orederd the unlocked.

My understanding is that the Verizon sold version of the Pixel is carrier unlocked and can be used with any carrier like the Google Store version. The difference with the Verizon version is that the bootloader is locked, so you can't root the phone and probably can't uninstall any Verizon specific software that they put on the phone.
Did you proceed? I'm in the same situation and altough I've read everywhere that it's not locked I want to be absolutely sure that it will work on other networks

It will work on other networks. I currently have been using it on TMO for 3 months with no issues coming from Verizon.

Pixel XL 2: Unlocked and Verizon Variants in Google Store

This may be premature since the phones haven't shipped yet but when I go to order the phone on Google's website they give an option for a Verizon version with a sim card or an unlocked version. If both phones are the same except one has a locked bootloader then why bother to do this? Why not let Verizon sell their own variant with a locked bootloader? Are there any disadvantages or missing features when using the unlocked version on Verizon???
If both phones were the same and acted the same when on Verizon then I'd be royally pissed if I bought the Verizon pixel from Google's site only to find it had a locked bootloader. I'll bet that a lot of people will buy the Verizon version from the Google store thinking that the bootloader can still be unlocked because they bought it from Google and not at the Verizon store. I'm surprised more people aren't discussing this and warning others. In the past if you bought a gen. 1 pixel from the Google store it was guaranteed to be unlockable but now it doesn't seem to be the case and Verizon probably convinced Google to con purchasers into doing this since they get such a hard-on about locking bootloaders.
Now if the unlocked version doesn't work the same on the Verizon network (I.e. Volte does not work or signal strength isn't as good then I don't feel too bad about Google selling both variants directly from their store.
Thoughts??
I don't believe the Gen 1 Verizon pixel was ever intended to have an unlockable bootloader.
No it wasn't but there was no way to purchase a Verizon Gen 1 pixel from Google like there is for the Gen 2. If you wanted an unlocked bootloader you just bought the only pixel offered on the Google store. Now there is two options from the same store. I'm just worried that people will get the Verizon version from the Google store (not Verizon store) thinking that it's unlocked because they bought it from Google, not Verizon.
Do both phones (Verizon and unlocked versions) operate on the same bands with same features when activated on Verizon network?
The option for the version states that a SIM is included. My only guess is that they toss a SIM card in the box for you if you select Verizon.

I was wondering the same thing, I plan on activating on Verizon when I receive my unlocked XL 2. But decided to buy the unlocked version just in case there was something stupid like a locked down bootloader or something weird.
I ordered mine so fast I'm worried I selected the Verizon version by accident. In order status it shows nothing about whether you ordered the unlocked or the Verizon version. Can someone that ordered a Verizon version check and see if their order status says Verizon or anything? Mine just says Pixel 2 XL (128 GB, Just Black). No mention of unlocked or Verizon anywhere.

Go in and reorder it, I switched from a Panda Verizon XL 2 128gb that was gonna get delivered Nov7-9th to just black 128gb xl 2 unlocked which said Oct 25th. The shipping dates havent really changed much.

Same for me: no mention of Unlocked or Verizon on order acknowledgment...
If you are unsure, the advice to cancel and reorder is good, just with penalty of
later shipping.
I ordered mine while *slightly inebriated" last night. This morning I simply canceled my order and reordered it while 100% sober so that I knew 100% that I ordered an unlocked version and not the Verizon model. The order history didn't state unlocked or Verizon so I just wasn't sure... You can't be too sure of these types of things lol =)
Thanks for the post. I made the mistake of ordering the Verizon version. It does say this in the description on the order confirmation. Reordered and delivery date was reduced to October 27 from Nov 20.

It would be the first time for me to order a google (pixel) phone.
Im am from Germany, will the pixel from "Deutsche Telekom" (T-Mobile) be different than the one straight from the google store? :/
@EDIT: Asked the Support from Telekom Deutschland and tehy told me, that there isnt a difference between the Telekom Device and the Google Store Device in relation to Bootloader, updates or bloatware.
Can anyone verify if the unlocked version works the same as the Verizon version when on the Verizon network? Does volte and vvm work the same? Does the unlocked version have access to the same cell towers and lte bands? Or does Verizon cripple some features on the unlocked variant?

On the old Pixel XL it worked the same on either model. I had an unlocked Pixel XL and a Verizon Pixel and they both worked the same with features. VoLTE and VVM both worked fine. The only difference was the unlocked model showed as "other" Pixel device with a generic picture in my Verizon account and the Verizon pixel showed as "Verizon Pixel" with an actual picture of the phone.

Thanks for confirming. I think I'm ok then since it looks like the Verizon version actually states it in the order status.

Would this also apply if you order the Pixel 2 XL from Verizon directly?
This is happening exactly as I predicted. People are being duped into buying the Verizon pixel 2 from the Google store thinking that the bootloader can be unlocked because they purchased from the Google store instead of the Verizon store.

I can get the Verizon version directly from them through my work for $350, that is why I was wondering.
Can someone who ordered the Verizon Pixel show a snippet of the confirmation page?
If VZW version is the same as the unlocked one, and Google is simply throwing in the SIM card, insert the VZW SIM card after turn on the phone and unlock the bootloader.
Google Customer service confirmed to me on the phone that bootloader for Verizon version is locked but should get OS and security patch updates directly from Google if bought from Google Store. He wasn't sure about OS updates if phone is bought from Verizon.

Well last year was the Pixel different when ordering directly from Verizon with updates?
The boot loader unlocked really is not necessary in my case because I would be happy just to be on stock Android with regular updates.

How can I tell if my cell carriers Z2's are eligable for unlocking the bootloader?

I've been out of the game for a bit so I'm a little lost, are ALL the z2 phones boot loaders unlockable through the Motorola Devs site, or only the ones from Sprint and T-Mobile? I haven't been to my store to see which particular version of the Z2 they sell yet, but I'm also looking at the LG V30 which I know I need a specific version number (998). What do I need to look for before I buy the Z2 to make sure I can unlock it and flash TWRP?
I used to be an android tweaker back when I was in middle school (about 2009-ish) and then switched to apple. Now I'm done with that and want to get back into android so I'm looking into what phones are out and my tiny local cell carrier offers the V30 and the Z2 Force which are both contenders. I'm particularly interested in using Magisk which wasn't around back in the day
Thanks!
I think only AT&T and Verizon models can't be unlocked unless another carrier out of the US also told Moto they don't want them unlocked.

stay away from the LG phones if you want an unlocked bootloader. unless you get an international variant they will not be what you want. I just got rid of my G6 because of this. They allow you to unlock your BL on Tmobile but guess what? No fastboot commands work!!! Seems all the new Lg's are doing this now

Well I'm not on any of those four lol, thats why I want to know if I can tell by serial number or something. Otherwise I suppose I can go buy the thing, try the moto website, and if it's not eligible I'll just tell my carrier I didn't like the phone and since the warranty should still be good they'll let me "test drive" it for two weeks.

Have a friend who has TMobile buy it outright, after 7 days you can carrier unlock it via calling in to TMobile and them giving you the SIM unlock code. The T-Mobile account must be current, phone be active, and must be purchased, you can't carrier unlock (via carrier) unless it is purchased and not leased, rented, amount owed on device. Will it work on Vz? I wouldn't know to be honest.

Thanks I thought I had something going lol. I did read about getting the code but it didn't go through the details. That is probably why Moto is.not selling an unlocked version. I'm not so much interested in a custom.rom but would like root. I'm in a tough signal area in Wisconsin and the only phones that work well here are Motorola. I've tried the Note 8, Pixel2XL even the Essential none of them are worth a darn signal wise. I have the original Z Force but Verizon so no root. Oh well back to the boards. Thanks Again.

That is why I left Vz. Great signal but I want unlock options. Having to use rumrunner on my HTC M7 was a pain compared to just going to HTCdev and accepting the voided warranty. HTCdev, Motorola unlock site, etc will always work. Programs like rumrunner, Sunshine, etc can be patched via update and not work on newer firmwares. No bueno in my book.
I first bought the VZW Z2 Force and fell in love with it but I couldn't live without root. I sent it back and went to TMO and got one. TMO signal in my area is terrible, many dead spots. I don't own this phone but I'd pay it off in a heartbeat if I knew I could carrier unlock it and then throw my Verizon SIM card in it. Nobody has tried yet?

Usually it would require the Verizon flash all and then it depends if Lenovo went cheap and put the Verizon specific frequencies for LTE in all models. Most of the time each phone for different carriers are from different batches with tiny hardware differences. Some times the radio is the exact same and the modem firmware file depicts what frequencies are unlocked. (Most of us modders went away from Verizon for what my previous post explains, so possibly no one who has Verizon has tried to bite the bullet).
If I didn't have Verizon I wouldn't be able to make a call from my.house. That's how bad it is right here and that's only because of a Network extender. You could still try it all you have to do is carrier unlock it and try. Anybody's Verizon sim will work.

Got a Pixel 2 XL have questions

I recently upgraded from a Note 8 to a Pixel 2 XL unlocked verizon model.
Unfortunately I cannot root the phone so I can't use xposed for the ad blocking capabilities.
I was told that there was a virtural exposed that does similar things yet I used it and I cannot use it on youtube to block ads.
Without rooting is there any way I can block youtube ads and app ads similar to exposed?
I am using firefox with ublock so that helps but I would very much enjoy blocking youtube and other ads?
Also is there something similar to Air android for Pixel 2? I cannot use Air android for pixel 2 it keeps force closing. Not sure if its because of the phone or Android P?
Phone other wise is extremely great and I am using it on Android P
Would love suggestions for good cases and tempered glass
Thanks!
Dns66 would be your best bet for ad blocking without root.

I'm curious, is your phone an unlocked model or a verizon model?
Where did you purchase your phone; Google Store? Did you purchase specifically the Verizon model from the Google Store?
Just checking, because if you did purchase an unlocked model and simply have a Verizon SIM in it, you are and would be able to root your phone...
Then, if you would be able to unlock the bootloader, many of your concerns could be addressed better having root access...

wait.....unless it's a verizon model, wouldn't they all be "carrier unlocked"? And, if so, it's only bootloader unlocked if it's a Verizon model, right?
Supposedly even the Verizon model is carrier unlocked. It however also has a locked bootloader. A device purchased direct from Google won't have a locked bootloader.
Funny story. I went into a Verizon store to get a case for my P2XL because Amazon couldn't tell the difference between a P2 and P2XL: they sent the wrong product. The Verizon rep asked me why I didn't buy my P2XL from them. Reply? "You lock your bootloaders." Without missing a beat the rep tried to say that they supposedly stopped doing that, to which I countered that I know more than a few people who would disagree with you. The "deer in the headlights" look and the mumbling about having to look into that [locked bootloader] was priceless.
Good story! Most Verizon emp's don't know what a bootloader is! ???

So, trying to understand this all correctly, you could purchase a "Verizon model", and bring over to another US carrier (let's say AT&T) and it would work? Or even an EU carrier (although I've heard that there is a carrier lock for the first number of months [I think 9 months] before you can activate your US Pixel 2 in another country)?
And so, the only thing different between Verizon model and any other is only the bootloader? As you can supposedly activate the VZ model in other networks (not exclusively the use of Google's model) and/or it's not like you can't use/activate Google's model on Verizon's network?
...Outside of Verizon's exclusive deal with Google, I wonder why Google didn't just advertise is as Locked-Bootloader version and Unlocked-Bootloader version -- other than Verizon pulling the bait-and-switch locking the bootloader of a phone that's initially and naturally unlocked and/or didn't want it advertised that way due to negative connotation...
Verizon may also have it carrier locked. I don't have one and I'm not about to find out either since I steer far clear of Verizon. However, the only difference I can recall between the Google and Verizon P2XL is the bootloader. So if Verizon doesn't also SIM lock the P2XL, then you could buy a Verizon P2XL and use it on AT&T, T-Mobile, or any of their MVNOs like Straight Talk or Cricket just by swapping SIM cards.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but the fact Verizon locks the bootloader at all means you're better off with buying direct from Google, even though the deals are not nearly as significant as with Verizon/Best Buy.
You can get Verizon Motorola devices direct from Motorola. Unlike Motorola, Google doesn't offer the Verizon models in their store. Therefore Google doesn't have to advertise something that only appeals to a select group of owners. As for Verizon, there is no bait and switch here. Bait and switch involves substituting a product for a product the merchant has no intention of selling. Verizon isn't doing that, as all their devices are bootloader locked.

Pixel 3a XL - Bestbuy bootloader Unlocked?

Hi,
Anyone with the Best-buy Unlocked version can confirm if the bootloader is Unlocked? Perviously only the Verizon version was available with Bootloader locked, now with this models looks like all the devices will be bootloader unlockeable.

Thanks for any information.

Per google all pixels are sold at carriers, except Verizon, are the same exact one sold from google store. They only include a sim for the carrier. Meaning they are sim unlocked, bootloader unlockable et ESIM ready. Verizon even on Pixel 3a had the ESIM removed or disabled. again. Do not buy from Verizon.
Best buy Unlocked, B&H video....are OK I will find out as soon as I pick mine from tmobile and will update this post.

Each carrier (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint) all have a Pixel variant now so as long as the carrier supports Wi-Fi calling on a BYOD phone it should work for the major carriers.
I'm wondering if the AT&t T-Mobile Sprint very in school out for bootloader unlock or if they're going the same way as Verizon with it not being unlockable I prefer just to buy it from the Google store and get the unlocked one but Best buy has it for $100 cheaper if you activate it through them Even the unlocked one so I don't know how that works.
I have the Tmo one. I see that damn unlock app in my drawer and sure enough, it's locked to the network. :/

I just asked B&H about their listing and according to the B&H rep.. LTE Band 71 is missing on the B&H model. Does not make sense but that is what they told me and it is on the question and answer page. So if you are going to use T-Mobile avoid this model.

The specs over on the Google store site says that band 71 is there. And I have no idea if the bootloader in unlockable? How do I check?

I'm wondering if the AT&t T-Mobile Sprint very in school out for bootloader unlock or if they're going the same way as Verizon with it not being unlockable I prefer just to buy it from the Google store and get the unlocked one but Best buy has it for $100 cheaper if you activate it through them Even the unlocked one so I don't know how that works.

That would be a BB gift card. Google Store has the same $100 credit for the Google Store so I don't think that I'd say it was $100 cheaper at BB.

My main query was about the bootloader status if it's going to be like Verizon on the other carriers or if it's going to be like the unlocked from Google Which Best buy selling and yeah.

Yes, I know that. I think that has been answered in that only the Verizon model will be bl locked. But I'd still like to see a few more confirmations of it.

Of course the Verizon is locked. I'm wondering if someone can answer the variants for T-Mobile, Sprint and at&t. Unless those models are just the Google store unlocked models which would be amazing!
