No Tethering with Verizon Classic True Unlimited Data Package - Need Options - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Received my Pixel 2 XL today, bought the non carrier Google version and not the Verizon Google Store version.
I am on the long gone old classic Verizon Wireless true unlimited plan.
Upgrading from Nexus 6P which worked great on Verizon and tethered right out of the box, just switched it on and it worked
Got the Pixel 2 XL, Popped my Verizon Sim in at boot up as it requests, did full setup, data works, phone calling service works.
Went to turn on tethering and got saw the window say "Checking subscription status". Then says "To use Mobile Hotspot please call customer service to subscribe"
So no tethering for me unless I call Verizon and likely either pay a bunch more a month or get moved to their new unlimited plan, that only allows 10gb of tethering a month.
Suggestions/options/recommendations? I'll get in touch with Google but the phone may be going back.

That's what I am hoping for, been rooted and rom'ed since OG Droid due to this until Nexus 6P, which was a real pleasure to be honest to just be on the public channel.

Tethering is $1/day, sometimes less if you have corporate discount. You can use as you wish & not have to worry about anything

I have the play store version and am on Verizon with gf udf. I don't see any warnings like you. I didn't insert a sim until long after I'd setup my phone---used WiFi during initial setup. Maybe you got some carrier bull**** if your sim was in during setup?

I'm wondering the exact same thing. Really want to do this ASAP, can't really use the phone till then... Unless there is an app? FoxFi Maybe?

Wow that's weird. I did have sim on during setup... Interesting. I don't have WiFi at home , anyone else able to setup on wifi to confirm?

Did you try out pdanet?

Will be using WiFi tomorrow when i setup mine. Will report back. Ironically.. will be using my wifi tether on my moto x pure to setup my pixel.. worse case will just have my pure in the car for traveling when needing tether for others.

I just wiped my phone and redid it with no sim inserted in the XL 2, once I put the sim in and turned on the hotspot still got the same provisioning message.
I just put my sim in my son's unlocked Moto G 5+ and hotspot worked just fine.
If we get a lot of reports of hotspot working for people with the old grandfathered unlimited plan maybe it did something to the phone the first time I booted it up with the sim in it.

Just tried my tether again. Turned on. iPad connected to tether. Ran speedtest on ipad. Never got a message about needing a plan or whatever. I also had the Note 8 (unlocked). Did the same setup procedure and had no issues with tether.
Pixel 2 XL
Play store
Unlocked bootloader
Verizon, grandfathered unlimited
Not sure if it matters, I transferred/copied from the Note 8 to the Pixel during setup.

I setup my phone by copying from my existing pixel which was rooted to allow tethering on my vzw gf udp. I fully expected it not to work but to my surprise it worked perfectly. Not sure how or why, but it did and I'm not complaining

Perhaps by copying the data there was a transfer of the user database that holds this setting.
Code:
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
I believe this setting gets changed when you edit the build.prop with the following
Code:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
Just a thought. No data to back the above.

I have not yet touched the bootloader, so maybe that has something to do with it. Will go look for that process and wipe the phone out (again) and try.
THANKS ALL for the help, much appreciated. That's interesting about getting it to work on Note 8, I thought it was extremely rare to get it to work out of the box on anything but a nexus phone

Tethering doesn't work with Verizon gudp, it didn't work with the first pixels and it doesn't work with the pixel 2 either. People saying it works out of the box either don't have a gudp plan or they have the tethering package on their plan.
Soon enough there will be root or mods available to bypass the subscription check.

And here's a dumb question, I am in the same boat as you I have the old school VZW unlimited data plan and need to tether also and am quite interested in the Pixel 2 XL (despite all the recent crying about the screen), so do I indeed need to get the unlocked version from the Play Store then? And then just pop my sim card in? I guess I am confused on the sim part, can you just pop any VZW sim card into it and it'll fire up recognizing it's your account/number/etc? Are all VZW sim cards identical? I've just never upgraded my phone like this before, getting an unlocked device. I am currently with a Galaxy S6 if that matters at all.

Think I know my plans and phones. Have had the LTE UDP since the HTC thunderbolt. Not sure how soon everyone is getting the tether warning but I'm able to tether. Maybe cuz I copied from unlocked and tetherable note8 during pixel setup. Maybe can my pixel BL was unlocked... Should seem strange.

Purchasing an Unlock Code 3rd Party

Has anyone had success doing this? I purchased my Note4 that I've had for a Month now through an App called "Offer up". The seller stated the device was ATT Unlocked. I do not use ATT I use Cricket which is owned by ATT and the phone worked with my Sim so I assumed all was good. Well I realized today when I first tried the Mobile HotStop that the phone was in fact not locked as it did not work. So I went to ATT/device unlock and sent them a request and they denied stating that "I have not complete my Contract Agreement". FIGURES. Can anyone recommend a 3rd Party that they have had success with before. I appreciate responses in Advanced. Thanks.
Okay so I got the code and unlocked the phone successfully but still hot spot will not work
Running Lollipop? Cricket disables hot spot functionality regardless if phone is unlocked. Unless you've got a spare phone running KitKat your chances of tethering on Cricket are limited to nonexistent, and for that matter most other carriers for boot locked phones.
I'm on AT&T. Tethering is included with service for anyone on a family share plan. The tethering app that is pre-installed on the phone works well with this.
I realize people are using this phone with other carriers (some that obviously won't allow tethering) but on all the threads I've seen about tethering, I've never seen anyone mention this about AT&T.

Unfortunately yes running lollipop. And yes I did find out that Cricket is the reason why the hotspot feazure is not working. Makes me wish I hadn't sold my 4.4.4 rooted att galaxy s5 for this note 4... oh well it's done now.
I've tried 3rd party app pdanet/foxfi for Bluetooth teathering and it does work but it is veryour limited. Only the Brower gets to access the wifi not applications. Looked it up and it stated on the pdanet site that in fact some apps will not work with Bluetooth teathering.
Can anyone Recommended another 3rd party that might work for wifi hotspot?
If not another carrier?
Preferably something cost efficient.
I pay 85 a month for two phones. Unl. Talk/text/data. 10gigs hi speed data on my line and 2.5 on my girls as she doesn't use alot. No taxes. 85 flat. Just for reference
So I called Cricket wireless. They told me an add on for hotspot is $10 a month and will share from the 10gigs I have on my plan for my number. Not bad. They went to try and activate it and said that they could not because I brought my own device and the plan is only able to be added if you have a cricket smartphone (my note 4 is att) or if you have an iPhone byod.
My question now is do you guys think if I buy a cricket phone or an iPhone and give them the imei, have themade add the feature to my account and then swap the sim card and throw it in my note 4 without registering the note 4 on my account if that will work?
Just to help anyone else out that may be wanting hotspot on their byod cricket device. I found a workaround. If you purchase a phone or have a good friend that will let you use their imei of their !!hotspot compatible!! !!CRICKET!! phone you are good. Today I had a friend go with me to the store location and we switched imei's on our acccount. So I technically have her LG stylo imei linked to my phone number in the cricket system. And she has my old ATT S5 byod imei on her account. This allowed the Rep to activate the Mobile Hotspot on my Account. I simply left my Simcard in my phone while the change took place. I'm not sure if removing it or changing phones will register a change in their system or not. I am paying the $10 a month to cricket to enable mobile hotspot. But completely worth the trade off when my only other options were to pay more/ get less with a carrier that supports/ doesn't block hotspot or sell my Blackberry and Note4 and find Different Versions. My next phone will not be an ATT phone this is for sure.
unlock code
You say you got your code. Where did you get it from? I'm having the same AT&T issue"did fulfill my contract......"
You can try UnlockRadar.com, I'm using them regularly as I own a phone repair shop. I'm satisfied with their services. https://www.unlockradar.com

Native hotspot with Verizon unlimited data working?

I'm grandfathered into a Verizon unlimited data plan and use the native hotspot on my phone all the time. I understand the native hotspot app worked with most of the Nexus 6P's for those with Verizon UDP and the 5X could be made to work with modding the build.prop. Question I'm anxious to find out is if the Pixel phones native hotspot works with Verizon UDP's or can be modified to do so. Thanks for any info.
The Verizon pixel performs the check to see if hotspot is on your plan. Just verified it with my friend's pixel that came in. You'll probably have to do the build.prop mod. My question is if you can do the mod with the bootloader locked.
This is not what I wanted to hear, might have to send mine back or try and sell since I got mine for a 2 year contract price. I use the tethering a lot in the car for my kids ipads.

Verizon. my guess is the google version will be the same but that's only because i'm going off my experience with the Nexus 6. I got my N6 from Motorola and it still did the subscription check when I put my verizon sim in. I had to modify the build.prop and adb shell command it to get it working. oddly my N7 LTE doesn't perform this check so there is still hope that the Pixel from google store might be different.
My 6P from Google doesn't check on Verizon. Hoping that the Pixel from Google won't check then either. I need that to work as other have said.

I can confirm my 6P from Google does not perform the check on Verizon and native tethering works on my UDP. I should have my Pixel tomorrow so I will check and see what works, if I can't get Foxfi or the native tether to work it will be for sale or sent back shortly.
I have the 6p Currently and can confirm as well it did not do the subscriber check.. I just got my Pixel XL in the mail from Verizon and I am getting no go with Foxfi (in wifi mode) and The built in tether.
This is not looking good, I wonder if the model from Google will work.

Wow if I cant get tether I will have to sell it immediately. I may just leave it sealed in box until I can get confirmation that tether works on UDP. I don't want to return the phone because I need to be locked in contract so I don't get that $20 price hike on UDP
I am not on Verizon, but in a similar boat with ATT "unlimited". My Google bought N5 worked fine with the built-in hotspot toggle (I don't think it was sold through carriers), but my N6 didn't (it was bought from ATT). If I recall correctly, the N6 checked your SIM card to see what carrier you were on and then restricted the wifi hotspot depending on permissions from the carrier. The N6 would also install bloatware depending on your SIM card. One trick was to not install your SIM card at the initial turn-on. I think that kept the bloatware off, but I am not sure about wifi hotspot functionality. I rooted the N6 and modified two files to get the hotspot to work. If the Pixel hotspot works out of the box, I may not feel the need to root.
Has anyone tried to tether on a Verizon UDP with a pixel purchased through the Google Store?
I don't think anyone has one from the Google store yet

Hotspot worked on Nexus 5. Pixel XL now checks for a subscription. Whats different?

I never had a hotspot subscription, but my mobile hotspot seemed to work perfectly on my Nexus 5. Never did I see "checking for subscription" on my Nexus 5.
Today, after activating my nano SIM, I go to try mobile hotspot and now my Pixel XL checks for an AT&T subscription. This is a bummer since I have an unlimited data plan.
I understand that this is a service AT&T wants to sell, but I'm confused as to what the differences between the two phones are. Both phones are bought from Google directly.
Also, do any of you know of an app which can create a hotspot?
Thanks in advance.
This has come up over and over since the Nexus 6. Android itself now has it built into the back end to check with the carrier for hotspot provisioning. Some carriers don't care. Most do.

Subscribe to the service?
For those of you still on UDP still, you have to be aware at this point that VZW doesn't really like that you still have it which is why they keep raising your prices. You're just giving them a really good reason to kick you off that plan tier by violating your ToS. Yes they can do this. Keep skirting it if you'd like but don't be surprised if it happens. The carriers can see what type of traffic is passing through the device. This how TMO caught people on old legacy plans before they started giving away hotspot.
I'm sure a workaround will pop up at some point but I've experienced it myself and known a few other people that lost old legacy plans this way.

A representative at AT&T said this is a common problem with unlocked phones (One Plus owners specifically), and they have resolved this issue in the past. We'll see how far she gets. If she does not find a solution, I'll have to consider other options.
Thanks for your input.

You can use this trick to get the hotspot going on your phone without root. I have tried it on my Pixel XL with ATT. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=69229666&postcount=35
The Network Signal Refresher app you will need is here. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.atejapps.networksignalrefresher&hl=en My N6 checked with the death star for hotspot permission. Rooting the N6 and modifying two files had me tethering all I wanted. It is nice to be able to tether without root using the network app. If you tether up a storm, ATT may very well send you a text. One of the files that got modified on the N6 told the phone not to send all the tethering data through a specific tethering path via ATT. So even though you can get a hotspot on the Pixel, it will be easy for ATT to know you are tethering.

Anyone Successful in Activating HotSpot on a locked Verizon phone?

I'm curious if anyone out there has been successful in getting their HotSpot to work without the subscription.
I work off of a corporate and locked phone so I am trying to get my hotspot working as it is a grandfathered unlimited plan.
I haven't been successful so far, so who has been? What did you do in order to get your hotspot working?
In the past I had a Note 2, Note 3, and LG G4 all had to have a special modded app in order to get the hotspot to work. I was hoping that something like this would come around, but I think I will have to wait until a successful Root method is available
I have the unlocked version that I bought through best buy. The hotspot works on mine w/out subscription. I am also on the grandfathered unlimited plan.

Awesome! Glad it works with the Unlocked version.
I am more interested in those with Locked phones though, as that is what I currently have and I would really like to find a functioning work around.
I need the same. I didn't want to risk losing verizon features so I didn't order the unlocked model from Sammy.

Holy crap, well that works.
Too bad I keep this thing in an Otterbox Defender :/
I guess when I am really desperate I will do it, thanks for the trick!
I can get it to turn off, but it shuts off after a few seconds every time.
Edit - just tried it again and it's sticking now. Weird.
I have this working and got it from the note 8 forums. See my other posts.
I bought my note 8 from verizon and was told it was unlocked already. Is this true? How can i check? My point being is i paid for hotspot with my verizon s8 plus bc i couldnt get a work around working and i HAVE to have hotspot for sure. So im asking because if it works without subscription on an unlocked verizon note 8 then is it worth canceling the hospot i pay for every month to try and see if it works on mine? I guess i just need to know how to see if my phone is unlocked like they claimed 1st. Any suggestions out there?

Flash the unlocked firmware to your phone. Works great and no messing with sim cards. You can always flash back if you want to.
^ Yeah do what he said. Easy fix , Sim card trick is too annoying. I flashed the unlocked firmware onto the Verizon Note 8 as well and am rooted and can use the hotspot care-free now.

To flash the unlocked firmware, do you have to be on a specific firmware already? I'm on AQH7 baseband. Also it says I have a system update to install, but I've been putting it off in case it would prevent me from unlocking or rooting.... I just got the phone two days ago, and it immediately shows this update. I'll keep delaying it. Thanks for the help.
PS, I had the paid version of Foxfi and have been able to tether my phone to the tablet via Bluetooth and it didn't bring up the subscription warning. You have to install pdanet tablet on the tablet or Android device you want to tether to, and both devices would need Bluetooth.

Verizon gUDP & Hotspot on Unlocked Pixel 3 XL

Purchased a Pixel 3 XL Unlocked in hopes of utilizing my gUDP on Verizon without issue similar to other unlocked phones like PH1 and Note 8. Pixel arrived today, and no go. Does anyone have any clue why this is? Do I have to wait for root to be able to use hotspot? I'd have to have to get rid of the device, but this is a big issue for me.

What's the specific issue you're having? What doesn't work?
Looks like it's doing a subscription check (which with the grandfathered unlimited plan isn't included) and won't allow hotspot to be enabled. I knew buying a Verizon version would likely cause this to happen. Other unlocked devices have worked however without issue.
The Pixel XL is the same way on Verizon. I have one that I purchased directly from Google. In order to get the hotspot working you will need to root the phone and edit the build prop to include this line: net.tethering.noprovisioning=true

That's unfortunate, then keeping updated is a pain isn't it?
How long after launch is root usually obtained?
I bought the pixel from Google and tethering does not work on Verizon like it did with the older phones so it looks like Google is now checking even if you buy unlocked. But with Magisk tethering enabler tethering works. You need to search the forums for the patched version that works with the newest Magisk.

Looks like it's doing a subscription check (which with the grandfathered unlimited plan isn't included) and won't allow hotspot to be enabled. I knew buying a Verizon version would likely cause this to happen. Other unlocked devices have worked however without issue.

Sorry, off topic; but you still have the old grandfathered unlimited? I used to have it until Verizon forced me off of it for "using too much data". I survived the first wave when they were forcing people off the plan but eventually they had a thing were if you were using over 100GB a month on average they were terminating your line. I consistently used around 300GB a month and sometimes even more so one day I got a notification that they were terminating my line and I needed to "upgrade" (which was really a huge downgrade for more money) to one of the new unlimited lines.
Anyway, Sorry again, I was just shocked to hear people are still on the old school unlimited which the whole time I had it was true unlimited with no throttling. Best plan in cell phone history and I miss it so much :'(
Root already established
topjohnwu magisk official version not out yet but already done

Ok perfect. Maybe I'll keep the device then and wait for root instructions.
Yes still have gUDP. I use it daily at work but tend to keep it under 100gb a month. I don't do any heavy video streaming etc to ensure I stay under each month. They did increase the data to $49.99 over the $29.99. Still no throttling and up to 100gbs can't be beat.

I added this setting to my build.prop on my rooted/unlocked Pixel 3 XL and rebooted the phone. I'm still prompted with the "To use Mobile Hotspot, please call customer service to subscribe."

Update:. I performed the initial update using a text editor and no success. I then downloaded buildprop editor and made the change and it worked like a charm. You need to be rooted.
