Subtratum on 8.0 - Sony Xperia XZ Premium Themes, Apps, and Mods

Anyone managed to run Substratum properly on this device? The Java application by andromeda is not picking up my phone.

I am still waiting on the US firmware otherwise I will let you know. This was going to be the first thing I tried because of Andromeda.
Edit: Andromeda works perfectly! I paid for the app and I was able to theme my phone pretty similarly too Pixel. However the status bar icons do not edit and the lockscreen cannot be edited. (I believe it is because of Xperia ROM changing those already).

Andromeda doesn't turn on. Substratum keeps asking to connect to desktop client although i already have

Works ok for me

Works perfectly for me. Use the script. The Java app is broken

Worked for me as well using the script per angelica_kh suggestion.

How to do this? I installed the substratum, but when I run it, it says that my device not supported.

For me it works as long as i stay connected with my usb cable to pc. Once i disconnect the cable i get "not connected" and i need to use again the script to make it work

andromeda says it's connected, but substratum keep asking for desktop client connection.

I dont quite have that issue but the issue that I have is that when I reboot it says that it needs the desktop client. It does work but only up until I reboot. It seems many people are having different issues with it. Im using commercial and journalists rom, maybe different firmware roms play differently with it for some reason. I need to flash a customised UK version of oreo anyway. But thats my issue with it. Then I have to run the script again.

Oh well thats abit annoying then. Oh well if its supposed to happen I cant fault it. As for the other issues I cant see why others would have the issues and others like myself wont. Maybe it could just be down to different region firmwares. Maybe different model devices im using G8141. Thanks for pointing that out for me anyway. I guess ill have to deal with that.

So subtratum needs root? and I installed this and redirects me to buy the full version without even letting me try it out.
Which app do you use? cause there's a lot.

It's not an issue nor is it a bug. It states on the substratum thread that on reboot or some other circumstances, the andromeda process is killed, hence it needs to be reconnected via pc. It's the only limitation. But with the advantages it brings, it's a non issue.
Here are the instructions

[Q] Can't install SOME non market apks

I have the option checked to install non market apps, but if I download wifi tether, for instance, from the dev's website, my phone will not even let me click on "install," though I can hit "cancel." I've tried this with a free other apks, such a Swype, volume+, etc. Some allow me to hit install and some do not.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any solutions? Btw, rooted gnex, stock 4.0.2, vzw.

First, I want to thank you for posting your question in the appropriate place. By chance, are you running JuiceDefender? If so, there is a bug that sometimes does not allow a user to install non-market applications without a workaround (you will find it in settings when configuring JuiceDefender). If you're not running JuiceDefender, then I am not sure, sorry .
bennettm89 said:

I'm not. And since my original post, while my phone was laying on the couch, something changed and now I'm able to install those apks I've downloaded. Someone at AndroidForums suggested I side-load apks from my computer, but my only means of wifi is from my phone and wifi-tether was one of those apks that wouldn't install, until just an hour ago. I've had this issue rooted, unrooted, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, and it seems to come and go.
It seems no one else is posting about it anywhere that I can find, so if nothing else I wanted others to know that it is happening.

Worked perfectly, and now StickMount is working too. Just played a video off USB in XBMC.
Does anyone know a way to remove the su app from showing in the leanback launcher. Can't find it in the settings anywhere.
Pardon my ignorance, but what does this do exactly? ...aside from the obvious "gives you root"...I mean how, what does it do to the system?

Are you referring to the launcher settings or SuperSU settings there should be an option in SuperSU settings to set the SuperSU icon to invisible.
I just happened to check my system today and had the OTA update from LRX21M to LRX21V waiting. I tried installing it but Recovery stopped halfway through the install with an Error. I got back into Android with a power-cycle, so things are fine, but it's still on 21M.
I'm guessing this was due to having rooted the device. Is there a proper way to remove SuperSU to allow for a system update? I see there are 3 different options for cleaning up; does it particularly matter which one I choose? I could just pick one and try it but I'm kind of curious what the differences are between the options. Anybody know?
Update: I tried the second and third cleanup options (new superuser app and full unroot) and neither got me into a state where the OTA was successful. So I just downloaded the factory image and flashed the system.img from it, then reapplied the original root process.

probably a full unroot and flashing the stock boot.img would fully unroot, I wonder when LRX22C (5.0.1) will hit the nexus player
The root is fundamental in all devices for many things, and thanks to Chainfire and others independent developers we can consider Android a semi-open platform. (semi-open because not all is open source)
We don't want Android like the Apple walled garden, but we are not even against the sale of the software, we just want a common garden in which the user can choose and is not obliged.
For example with the root, it was easier to start this project:
Nexus Player with a Full Version of Android Lollipop https://plus.google.com/103019026671039069038/posts/V5XaLxK3vN8
This is just the base rom with all hardware components working, on this base that is very usable, i want add many other options. like external usb webcam and mic, improving the audio part that have fixed volume and many other things useful for the use in TV.
Nexus Player is not just Android TV, but is the first Nexus device with an intel cpu. Is a milestone in the evolution of Android.
This is just the start and I am very open to sharing and collaboration on this project.
Thanks Chainfire for the root and for your "How-To SU" guidelines.
Out of interest will rooting prevent OTA updates from installing in the future?

I did this, despite the warning it gave me. Now although I still get permission dialogs etc, I can not run the main program to delete apps etc from SU access. Is there anyway to go back to the main screen? I went to the apps sections of the NP and unlike other apps it didnt have an open command.
To get it back do I need to uninstall and then re-CFroot?
Thanks. I should pay better attention to dialog boxes but its not a huge deal.

That's a big deal to a lot of people though. For a lot of people who do not have root and are on KitKat, they can completely block packages on their phone that they otherwise could not. Sure, they allow you to block / disable certain ones on the phone itself, but not anything. This allows them to block any package, Knox included. And sure they could download a script, modify it for their purposes and create another script to unblock and so on and so on. But this maintains nothing and interacts with their device directly. Nothing to maintain and nothing to edit, etc. etc..
Anybody got a list of app that's safe to block. Don't want to cause an endless boot.
here's my complete script I have handy, after testing things and trying a few things without success, my phone many times would automatically erase all data and do a factory reset in the end of my failed experiments. Either that or I'd have to resort to that Odin package someone posted on here to flash back to stock. I think I've flashed my phone using that Odin package around 12 times now after downgrading from the forced updated NK3 back to original. I immediately run this script after enabling Developer options and enabling USB Debugging.
Just right click on the script and Run As Administrator on Vista,Win 7, Win 8 and Win 10.
**Make sure to have the 3 required Adb files to run Adb to communicate with device. I attached those 3 main files which you can extract to c:\windows\system32. This way you can run adb commands from any location on the computer since System32 is included in the environment variables for the OS

I Thank you Sir ... that is a nice, clean app that's works well, but I do have one suggestion for an improvement if you are open to it.
I like the fact that it has a filter function, but the filter only works on the name in the apk name, not the package name. It would be really sweet if it would search both areas. :good:

With the new TWRP recovery you can install also system.img. But to install TWRP recovery you need also fastboot. At this point, when you install TWRP recovery, you can install also system.img and boot.img.
However you can do all that you want in many way. The link for TWRP recovery is in the first post.

This is just great, Zulu, thank you so much for sharing this project with us, there's just no way of going back to Android TV after you try this rom. All ok and selinux is also enabled. so google can't break the balls saying that we are not secure. Also if i think that the real security in android is only with root, because without root permissions, you don't have sufficient permissions to manage and clean up your own system.
For me, selinux enabled is good only because some crap apps can check this to not work. When you hide the root, you are on pure and simple AOSP, so no problems for everyone.
I tested many things, but please test and let me know what we can add or correct. I use it as daily rom from some days.

Thanks, man, surely will do! In your personal opinion, is this one falling behind your build of LP in any aspects, or it's just as good? I'm flashing it right now, will report this afternoon already about any eventual issues! Thanks once again
EDIT: Tried formatting two USB drives as "internal storage", one of 32 GB and one of 8 GB. The 32 GB one keeps failing over and over, giving me a java related error (timeout).
The 8GB one formatted and worked fine.
The Dish Network Anywhere app won't run. It attempts to open and crashes. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Any ideas anyone? Other than that this is fantastic so far. Thank you @zulu99 !!
Can i preinstall apps on windows or would i have to unpack and repack in linux? to clarify I'm looking for a way to install same apps on multiple devices without doing one by one, as of now I have a folder in Es file explorer (android TV apps) and transfer via LAN then install one by one.
Anyone know easier way?
Thoughts helium backup, twrp backup first device and restore from backup on other devices.

Don't forget that this firmware is android 6. So to say if an app works or not work, compare with the stock firmware. some apps are not ready for android 6.

AOSP Full Android 6 Marshmallow on Nexus Player.Full Android 6 v.1.0
Android in TV is not just movies and songs but also millions of apps and games.
Full Android firmware want be full Android Experience with NO Limits.
With Android you can run all standard Google Play apps and also apps made specifically for Android TV.
For the best interaction with Android from your couch i suggest DroidMote, because with it multi-touch is not a problem.
What's inside ?
Kernel:
NTFS, NFS/CIFS/F2FS Filesystem support
USB Webcam support & USB Audio
ExFat support
Firmware:
Full AOSP firmware with standard Android Launchers. Android 6 MRA58K
Compatibility with many more apps with the classic Google Play Store ( .... Google Plus, Youtube, Chrome, Gmail, Hangout, Skype, Maps etc. etc. )
MTP + ADB (transfer file from NP to PC via usb cable like your tablet/phone)
Unlocked fixed Volume (now you can use any remote to UP/DOWN/MUTE volume)
Bluetooth a2dp external headsets and speakers support
UVC Webcam video HAL
(tested with Logitech C525 for video call in Hangout and Spype)
Arm translation to be compatibile with arm-only apps. Like Netflix and Skype
Support external microphone from usb webcam.
(tested with Logitech C525 for voice call in hangout and skype, voice search in google now, sound recording )
Chromecast functionality
What not working and i'm working on ?
Google camera app can crash. The HAL for the usb webcam is experimental but you can do all, videocall, take photo and record videos with the appropiate app.
Installation:
Download the firmware from this link: https://goo.gl/7Xy1qL
Put the device in bootloader mode:
1) fastboot flash boot boot.img
2) fastboot flash system system.img
3) fastboot -w
To root you can download the last SuperSu beta and install with TWRP recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/2014-09-02-supersu-v2-05-t2868133
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nex...recovery-twrp-2-8-6-0-touch-recovery-t3114717
To restore the original firmware you can use the Factory Images "fugu" for Nexus Player https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Note:
The remote that came with the Nexus Player will pair and work with this ROM, however it is not sufficient so please refrain from asking questions in this thread about it. I recommend using DroidMote or an hardware keyboard/mouse for realistic functionality. Only directional keys are not sufficient for a full version of Android. I love Android in TV and i use it from 3 years with many Android Tv Box. I made this firmware for my personal use, because i like Android with standard apps UI, that are more accessible, updated and fast. I like a customizable launcher, but specially i don't like imposed limitations made just to protect economic interests of few.

I only got my 2XL yesterday, but this was one of the first things I setup. Running a mix of Swift Black / VaLeRie and have noticed no
performance or battery problems. It's freaking awesome. This is one out of two reasons I root my phone, nice not to have to
wait for root to use it.
I'm using it for navigation buttons to avoid the burn-in issue. I didn't see any performance or battery issue.
I tried the immersive mode, but it was a bit annoying.
Is there something I'm missing? I can't seem to get this to work. I've got both Substratum and Andromeda installed. I run the script on my Windows PC to fire-up Andromeda, then it launches the Substratum app, but it shows me an overlay saying "The Andromeda desktop client needs to connect to your device to be able to function with Substratum". There's a "Check Status" button on that screen, and when I press it I get the green box telling me my connection status is good. Can't ever get into the Substratum app without that overlay screen. I'm also seeing a notification that there is a "delay with the andromeda backend- please relaunch Substratum", but relaunching just starts the cycle allover again.

Did you try rebooting then trying the andromeda add-on?

I ended-up trying on my work PC, which runs Windows 7 instead of Windows 10 that I run at home, and it worked the first time. Strange.

That's weird, my windows 10 pc worked flawlessly
It worked beautifully as stock but it's now broken after an upgrade to 8.1 unfortunately...
It worked great for me until I moved to the 8.1 DP which seems to have broken it. Theme Manager no longer exists in the "Display" section of the settings app and Subs/Andromeda says it "can't fall back to root mode" and something about "no other theme Manager installed"

I've discovering this as well. Wish I would've held off on moving to the beta. Is there a way to downgrade back to the stable 8.0 release?

Just go back to the bootloader and flash the latest 8.0 from the Google support page with Factory Images. Probably can remove the -w from flash-all so it doesn't wipe. No promises on wether that'll work to downgrade an API level without wiping. I'm not a dev so can't speak to that. But you'll definitely be able to downgrade. Also unenrolling your device might force 8.0 ota to be pushed to your phone.

Yep. Looks like you just need to unenroll and it'll push the stable as an OTA. Sounds like it'll wipe data though.

Most likely due to dropping an API level. Probably also means that removing -w in the flash script would end up in a red boot screen and unusable device. Worth a try though, you could be the data point we all want.
