Has anyone used rootless substratum on the pixel 2? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

If so have you notices any hits in performance or battery life?

I have had my Translucent Substratum Oreo running since day one I got my Pixel 2 and no problems with battery or speed at all.

Thanks I could never deal with the white background

I hear ya brother thats the first thing I had to change. So much white ui and even the "theme" they have built in only does a small percentage of what a rootless Substratum theme can do.

I only got my 2XL yesterday, but this was one of the first things I setup. Running a mix of Swift Black / VaLeRie and have noticed no
performance or battery problems. It's freaking awesome. This is one out of two reasons I root my phone, nice not to have to
wait for root to use it.

I'm using it for navigation buttons to avoid the burn-in issue. I didn't see any performance or battery issue.
I tried the immersive mode, but it was a bit annoying.

Is there something I'm missing? I can't seem to get this to work. I've got both Substratum and Andromeda installed. I run the script on my Windows PC to fire-up Andromeda, then it launches the Substratum app, but it shows me an overlay saying "The Andromeda desktop client needs to connect to your device to be able to function with Substratum". There's a "Check Status" button on that screen, and when I press it I get the green box telling me my connection status is good. Can't ever get into the Substratum app without that overlay screen. I'm also seeing a notification that there is a "delay with the andromeda backend- please relaunch Substratum", but relaunching just starts the cycle allover again.

That's weird, my windows 10 pc worked flawlessly

It worked beautifully as stock but it's now broken after an upgrade to 8.1 unfortunately...

It worked great for me until I moved to the 8.1 DP which seems to have broken it. Theme Manager no longer exists in the "Display" section of the settings app and Subs/Andromeda says it "can't fall back to root mode" and something about "no other theme Manager installed"

Just go back to the bootloader and flash the latest 8.0 from the Google support page with Factory Images. Probably can remove the -w from flash-all so it doesn't wipe. No promises on wether that'll work to downgrade an API level without wiping. I'm not a dev so can't speak to that. But you'll definitely be able to downgrade. Also unenrolling your device might force 8.0 ota to be pushed to your phone.

Yep. Looks like you just need to unenroll and it'll push the stable as an OTA. Sounds like it'll wipe data though.

Most likely due to dropping an API level. Probably also means that removing -w in the flash script would end up in a red boot screen and unusable device. Worth a try though, you could be the data point we all want.

Subtratum on 8.0

Anyone managed to run Substratum properly on this device? The Java application by andromeda is not picking up my phone.
I am still waiting on the US firmware otherwise I will let you know. This was going to be the first thing I tried because of Andromeda.
Edit: Andromeda works perfectly! I paid for the app and I was able to theme my phone pretty similarly too Pixel. However the status bar icons do not edit and the lockscreen cannot be edited. (I believe it is because of Xperia ROM changing those already).
Andromeda doesn't turn on. Substratum keeps asking to connect to desktop client although i already have
Works ok for me
Works perfectly for me. Use the script. The Java app is broken
Worked for me as well using the script per angelica_kh suggestion.
How to do this? I installed the substratum, but when I run it, it says that my device not supported.
For me it works as long as i stay connected with my usb cable to pc. Once i disconnect the cable i get "not connected" and i need to use again the script to make it work
andromeda says it's connected, but substratum keep asking for desktop client connection.

I dont quite have that issue but the issue that I have is that when I reboot it says that it needs the desktop client. It does work but only up until I reboot. It seems many people are having different issues with it. Im using commercial and journalists rom, maybe different firmware roms play differently with it for some reason. I need to flash a customised UK version of oreo anyway. But thats my issue with it. Then I have to run the script again.

Oh well thats abit annoying then. Oh well if its supposed to happen I cant fault it. As for the other issues I cant see why others would have the issues and others like myself wont. Maybe it could just be down to different region firmwares. Maybe different model devices im using G8141. Thanks for pointing that out for me anyway. I guess ill have to deal with that.

It's not an issue nor is it a bug. It states on the substratum thread that on reboot or some other circumstances, the andromeda process is killed, hence it needs to be reconnected via pc. It's the only limitation. But with the advantages it brings, it's a non issue.

Worth Rooting?

Hi all,
Joining Team Pixel tomorrow after my debacle with the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and the green screen fiasco.
Just wondering if its still worth rooting the Pixel? If i do it i wanna do it straight away to save wiping my data again when unlocking the BL. My main reasons would be for Adaway, Removing the Nav Bar, Swift theme installer and Viper.
Most of these can be done via ADB now so is it still worth rooting?
Rooting this phone is pretty easy and it doesn't impact the updating process much if you know what you're doing, so I vote that it is definitely worth rooting.
I don't use a lot of root apps, but the two main ones are worth it to me. I use AdAway for ads (VPN ad blockers are slower and have several cons) and an app called Sa2ration to compensate for the screen's weak color.
I have everything working the way I want without any compromises. Very happy with my setup.
It's soooo easy to root, I'm not sure why anyone wouldn't. My main reason is viper 4 android, but adaway, pixel launcher mods (changes icons and has a system UI tuner), and sd maid pro having deeper access for cleanup as well.
I've always had an Android phone that has been able to be rooted. Adaway, V4A, Substratum, Sa2ration, Titanium Backup and removing the stock navigation buttons are the biggest things for me currently with the Pixel 3 XL.
I always recommend unlocking the bootloader right out of the box, even if you never plan to root. The sole reason for this is if at any point something goes awry and you end up in a bootloop or somehow end up soft bricked, with an unlocked bootloader you can be back up and running like new with a very quick flash-all script from the latest factory image on Google's support site. However, with a locked bootloader, if you find yourself in one of those bad situations, you're at the mercy of Google support to either get you a new device or go days without a phone while they try and fix it.
So, in my opinion, unlocking the bootloader is a no brainer on these phones, right from the get-go.
With that said, rooting is much more user preference. I found no reason to root my OnePlus 6. However, with the 3 XL my sole reason for rooting is to edit the build.prop to properly hide the nav bar at the system level, allowing me to use gesture controls without issue. You can use ADB commands to achieve this as well. But my experience in trying to hide the nav bar with ADB commands on this phone has caused some wonky things to happen, such as status bar notifications not going away and volume controls getting cut off when watching something in landscape mode. Rooting the phone and editing the build.prop was the only solution that worked for me to hide the nav bar without running into unforeseen issues.
If you are one to do other things like use Magisk modules and such, then rooting will be a no brainer for you. Also, as someone else mentioned, rooting this phone is the most straight forward/simple experience I've had rooting a phone in years.
Thanks guys thats it decided then. Is it best to OTA to november then root via twrp after ul bootloader.
Yeah nav bar is a pet hate of mine, I used to love LMT launcher, might try the OP gestures though on this one

I'm perfectly happy with the stock experience on this phone. I have no need for anything that requires root. I've rooted a lot of phones in the past, but there's something about this one that I just feel no need to do so. To me that says a lot for how far Google has come.
I'm getting my pixel 3 xl in a few hours today and I've been up all night watching pixel 3 xl videos. I was just about to post a question like this, but thanks to you I don't have to! The wonders of searching.
Anyways, I agree for adway and maybe even mods.
What bothers me is if I decide to use Google pay, Pokemon go or using my bank app, because I was told rooting can stop them from allowing me to use them.
I also want to do it out the box.
Also don't know about the new gesture stuff, so if I don't like it, I'd probably want to mod it.

That is exactly what I did with both a Pixel 3 and a Pixel 3 XL. Just don't do a permanent install of TWRP on the XL unless you want to lose your touch screen in TWRP with no way out of TWRP when it boots back in there. I ended up having to hold the power button down until I forced the device off. Booted back into bootloader and ran the temp TWRP (which strangely works fine for touch) and then ran Magisk again to get back to the OS. Strange, the regukar Pixel 3 took permanent TWRP after Magisk, rebooted to TWRP was still able to use touch commands and ran Magisk again to get back to the proper boot image. I can even go to TWRP normally, and touch is functioning normally. I'll have to write the stock boot image when I get home today so I can get back to stock recovery until TWRP for XL is fixed.

Magisk has a hide feature built-in that has been working for me. I have several apps that normally detect root and Magisk blocks their detection 100%. My banking app works (normally detects root) and Google Pay is working just fine with Magisk hide.
I've been learning to live with stock ROMS, BUT, I still need my root. Adaway, TiBu, Substratum, LMT Launcher. I can't give 'em up.

Not sure, I haven't encountered this.
I find that when an app has detected root, sometimes they retain this information even through reboots. In those situations, clearing all data from the app often fixes it.
Something else to be aware of is that if you have a widget for an app that detects root, it's not uncommon for the widget to load before Magisk finishes loading and hiding after a reboot. On my Pixel 2 I had one app where after each reboot it would load first (due to a widget being present) and would detect root and block itself. I had to remove the widget and just just use a normal shortcut to the app instead, as I would never manually open it before Magisk finished loading up fully.
I just got pixel 2 xl this thing is a beast came with 5g and unlimted data when I got tablets for kids literally no download it's all instant. every phone I have had b4 is rooted most still work. My question will I improve anything by rooting with this speed? I don't think a VPN blckr would slow it down. How hard is it to reverse root if I need warranty? Is this speed the 5g or just Google built a great product?

Unlocking the bl is problematic in some instances. Detection for apps and things like that. Why would you just not check off the "allow the bootloader to be unlocked" option in OEM unlocking? Then you get to fastboot and can unlock if needed without actually being unlocked and compromised.

It is my understanding, and correct me if I'm wrong, that apps recognize root but not bootloader locked status. As long as you don't root, you should be fine with all apps.

No I don't think so. If you bl unlock it will be detected. There are kernels that will fix that but stock unlocked is a trigger.

Yes. As @bobby janow said, some apps treat bootloader unlock as having root. DirecTV Now is a prime example. Also, Netflix won't even appear in the app store and would have to be sideloaded. Although, all of those can be worked around it is sometimes a pain.

Android q beta 2

Anyone running Android Q beta 2 ? Can you make a comparison to Pie in terms of speed or apps that crash or hang? TIA

How best to backout of the AndroidQ beta2?
Installed but Android Auto is playing up so want to go back to v8
Can't mount system partition R/W on Marlin using TWRP 3.2.3-1 once updated to AQB2 (although I did a dirty update by removing the -w erase flag from the bat file before executing.) Guess I'll try nuking everything and rebuilding from scratch to see if the partitions will mount R/W to install Magisk...

As you can see in this screenshot, it's working just fine. You have to install the latest Magisk canary build. TWRP won't work to do some backups, but you can flash it fine.
Been running Q2 for a few days and is a great daily driver. As soon as Nova paid was installed I have no complaints
and battery life has been excellent. Coming from the Essential phone rooted this has been a pleasant surprise. For 180.00 new
unlocked on Sprint this is a good deal. I also prefer the 16x9 screen and camera.
So, I have some weirdness going on…
I screwed up and tried to install the last P build after getting the ota beta Q update….i had issues (possibly of my own making).
Realized that trying to go back wasn’t going to work so I thought I would just reinstall the Q beta version 2, I downloaded it…all seemed well until I wanted to get to “settings”
I can pull the “curtain’ down and see a few quick access icons (wifi, Bluetooth, airplane mode…) but it won’t pull farther down (second swipe) to see other options and the “settings” gear at the top. I also don’t seem to be getting notifications, I hear them but don’t see an icon.
I also can’t get to the setting that allow me to transfer files.
Any ideas?
Edit: also can't get to my app drawer...
Edit 2: home button doesn't work either...
I got it, it must have been a bad "dirty flash", did a clean install, and all is working as expected...except,
I've got root but can't see my internal storage with ES file explorer (I can see it when using my PC) (or any other root explorer) and can't edit my build.prop (can't save it)

Right, I don't think I've tried to download anything with chrome, I want the permissions so I can edit the buildprop file.

I always update by downloading the zip image and removing the -w parameter in the .bat file inside, worked great with beta 6.

For me gesture navigation is broken. Swiping from any side has no effect. Anyone else have this?

Android 11 screwed up system gesture navigation in 3rd party launchers (again). I've just returned to 3 button nav bar + edge gestures app. Now I have the best out of both worlds. Quick and easy to use nav bar and also swipe gestures.

Thanks, I had tried setting the stock launcher to check if this was the case to no avail. Evidently I hadn't opened the home screen to let it load. Now have it working with no custom launcher and very slow animations... Hope MIUI can fix this soon.

I find stock animations very slow too (be it "clean" Android or MIUI) - enabling 0.5x speed for all animations in developer settings feels much snappier.
Btw. it's not a fault of MIUI, this time Google is to blame.

Yeah I've since found other complaints of broken gesture navigation with third party launchers on Samsung devices. I guess hopefully it's either patched in upstream Android by Google or Xiaomi patch it within MIUI.
Unfortunately, the MIUI stock launcher and Recents doesn't respect the 0.5% animation speed setting!
I've also found that you can no longer change individual app dark mode settings. The app list is just empty, still respects any that were setup prior to the update though.

I can't comment on stock launcher as I'm on Nova launcher, but recents screen seems to be snappy. I don't use it that often though, so maybe it's with 100% speed.
I can still change individual apps in dark mode - but only when the dark mode is active. It takes about 3 seconds for list of all apps to appear though, on the first sight the feature seems missing/broken.
The two main things I've noticed is the notification led is now bright enough to actually be useful.
And on poco launcher 2 if you keep pressing back to exit from an app or push the home button sometimes you get the apps icon appearing at the top left of the screen for a few seconds for some reason.
But if you switch to system launcher and back again this bug goes away until you restart the device.

Are you sure that you are flashing the same version of ROM as you have currently installed? You can use recovery update only from the very same region - Global or EU or China or Russia or another.

You might find the culprit with logcat - enable usb debugging, start "adb logcat" on the PC with the phone connected and run the update again. There should be an error message displayed with more details.

And I have one more problem. When I try to download latest update from phone updater it says that it cannot download updates and to try after 1 min or 2. I don't know if it's miui bug or problem with my phone specifically

Hello, for some reason it is working now. It is currently updating. How can I later update from beta to stable, or is it already stable?
