[GUIDE] About prototype Lumia devices - Windows 10 Mobile

If you accidently got a prototype Lumia device with an abnormal firmware installed, you can't use Nokia Care Suite to flash it.
Here's the characteristics of a typical Lumia prototype devices:
1. "proto.nokia.com" or "proto.microsoft.com" printed on the screen.
2. "PROTOTYPE, Property of Nokia" or "PROTOTYPE, Property of Microsoft Mobile" and something else engraved on the back cover.
3. IMEI started from 0044.
4. Lots of output info on the splash screen when booting up phone.
5. "Not for Resale" on the bottom left corner when entering OS.
6. Lots of Apps starting from letter "z", such as "zNocenter", "zBattInfo", "zFeedbackHub".
7. App "Field Medic" included.
8. The splash screen is neither Microsoft nor Nokia nor Network Carrier logo.
9. Boot into MMOS directly, in other words, the interface has a Microsoft logo on it, with some info of firmware revision, and the text "Modem offline" or "RF inactive" or something.
10. Boot into Recovery mode directly without pressing Volume Up, in other words, the interface has a white cog and a lightning.
11. Back cover has few opened hole for testing purposes.
What if you got one?
1. If it's finally released on market, you can install retail firmware into it with this command:
thor2 -mode uefiflash -ffufile <path_to_ffu_file> -skip_signature_check -skip_id_check -do_full_nvi_update -do_factory_reset -reboot
This command can be only used on prototype devices.
You can't use flashing command for retail devices on prototype devices and vice versa.
But, please make full emmc dump with dd command before flashing to prevent from flight mode loop because of baseband. If the baseband has serious problems, after you flash retail firmware on a prototype device, you'll get a flight mode loop, and the IMEI is probably started from "86483-".
2. If it's a cancelled device such as McLaren, Honjo, you can't install retail firmware for any similar devices on it.
3. If the prototype device is really early, the specification is probably different from retail device, for example, some earlier Lumia 920 prototype with Windows Phone 7 button doesn't have as much storage space as retail have.
4. Some prototype devices has their defects because of design, for example, Lumia 636 B2 has a defect that you can't recharge your phone directly, or the emmc will get locked to read-only state, because some capacitors that exists on retail devices are missing.
5. Prototype Lumia eMMCs are not as reliable as retail devices. They're really slow when you got them, and it's nearly impossible to make eMMC dump because the low transfer rate. Few of them are easily fried up.
6. Of course, you can salvage a part for your retail device's replacement, for example, the screen with "proto.nokia.com" or "proto.microsoft.com" printed.
7. DO NOT SEND YOUR PROTOTYPE DEVICE TO SERVICE CENTER IF THE MANUFACTURER HADN'T SOLD THEM IN PUBLIC PREVIOUSLY, OR THEY'LL TAKE YOUR PROTOTYPE DEVICE AWAY WITHOUT RETURN AND CHECK THE SOURCE OF YOUR PROTOTYPE DEVICE.

I have a Lumia 930 Prototype, but it was updated to insider firmware and was bricked. How can I fix it? I've never seen before something like your guide. Best regards.

Hi Hikari,
I have "accidentally" got a 950 proto F2. It seems to be running RTM software, i don't have any of these z- apps you list above or field medic.
Are there any issues I should be aware of with these? Can I reset it?
Cheers

Hi @hikari_calyx, any chance you can get back to me on this?
I would like to test all the phone functions but the phone isn't recognised by Lumia Phone Test Application (it's know it's a Lumia 950 RM-1104, but won't test it). Do you know how to get LPTA to work with these prototypes or know an alternative method of testing all the phone functions easily?
Cheers

Hi @thinhx2, yes my 950 really is a prototype. It says Proto F2 on the inside sticker and the IMEI starts 00440. It says proto.microsoft.com on the front and Not for Resale on the boot screen.

I have the 1320 now and I think I did a mistake, it was already on a retail firmware but updates failed to install so I flashed to a different FFU using the command in the OP and now... I seem to have lost mass storage mode although WPI says the bootloader is unlocked.
I did make a full dump with Win32DiskImager before flashing the FFU so I do have the SBL3 needed to enable it again so I thought about trying to enable it again using the bootloader unlock option from WPI... Is WPI able to extract the SBL3 from the raw image of the device if I point it towards it for the SBL3 or do I have to first extract the SBL3 myself?

no. . i not sure . i dont know which firmware installed on you phone.
Can you send me compressed file of your backup emmc file?
At the moment. NO SBL3 FOR 1320 .because all 1320 proto flashed retail. We need sbl3 from proto firmware to unlock for retail. If your backup file is prototype. It good

The firmware is retail but the SBL3 was still prototype on it before I messed around with it.
Will send it in a few days when I get back home.

Is there a firmware update installed using 'official' zune upgrade?

Hi All,
Just a quick question. Haven't been able to get force the update to my Lumia 900 yet. (Australian, unlocked).
Could someone let me know if when doing an official upgrade whether you also get a firmware update.
If not I might just CAB update instead.
Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure what you mean by "official upgrade," but I got my Lumia 900 upgraded to 7.8 and immediately there was a firmware upgrade from Nokia.
I did the disconnect method to download 7.8, and didn't see any firmware upgrade. What is the new firmware # and how do I get it if I don't have it?
I have Lumia 900 RM-823 and today (without disconnecting method) I updated my phone to WP 7.8.
After Microsoft's updates (8779 > 8783 > 8858), there was a Nokia update, which changed my firmware version to 2175.2905.8853.12440, so YES, there IS a firmware update. However it's lower than firmware that you get with NCS + NaviFirm method, which is 2175.2905.8858.12480.
In [CAB] Official WP7 Updates List up to WP 7.8 + ALL LANGUAGES complete + OEM updates it is called OEM update and I've just captured an URL to this file:
Code:

Glad I could help. But remember, this particular CAB is for RM-823 only.
I don't know which variant is in Australia, but you can check it by looking at the bottom of your Lumia near the speaker:

No worries, mines the RM-823. I have another rom on it from Navifirm at the moment, but I want to put the correct one back on just in case.
We seem to be a bit behind here on getting the update pushed out and I don't want to sit and wait on 7.5. The start screen and double wide tiles make a massive difference!
Thanks again,

I used the disconnect method and updated my 900, two OS updates were done and one nokia firmware was done, so yes there is a firmware update...
my HD7 only had 2 OS updates no firmware updates...
I called Nokia to verify after the update and they told me that my OS and firmware is latest and greatest....
I follow the most simple way..
1. connect 900 to PC
2. turn off the wifi on PC or disconnect the network cable on PC.
3. turn on wifi on phone
4. run update on zune
5. 5 sec later turn on airplane mode on your phone.
6. you will have a msg stating you have an new update, turn on the wifi or connect network cable on your PC and update you phone.
it takes few tries to get it right...
the 7.8 OS tiles arrangement is great as it leaves very little space on the right side of the home screen.

[Q] lumia 900 rm-823 Dload

Hello friends...,
i need to flash a lumia 900, rm-832 without a dload osbl. i can only access rm 808 from the ATF team.
please help!
thanks.
First, this is not an ATF support forum, although we do have at least one ATF developer among our members.
With that said - bootloader-wise, the RM-808 and RM-823 are the same. You can safely use RM-808 mode with the RM-823.
Note that a new release of ATC is expected soon, which will be able to install an unlocked Qualcomm OSBL. It's currently being tested internally. See the "recover/upgrade" thread.

[Guide] Convert 950 DS RM-1118_13058 (059X5G2) into an ATT Lumia 950 (RM-1105_12716)

I could not find a thread to walk through being able to get my Dual Sim 950 to officially work on AT&T with VoLTE and other services (Enhanced LTE/HD Voice etc...). I searched many forums and threads to find a way to do this. I got tired of the lack of call quality and other quirks for my Lumia while on ATT. After accumulating several different pieces of information from multiple sources and places on the xda forum I was able to make it work. This is my first official post with the intention of it being a guide, offer tips if you want. Or if you see errors offer advice or suggestions if needed.
I am only posting this in the event someone else needs the information or wants to use it in some way. Messing with hidden partitions is risky and so if you brick your device using this thread, I'm sorry but I cannot help you. So if you choose to use these directions, use them at your own risk. I cannot be remote technical support. Thanks.
Here is how I got this to work.
Steps I used to convert NAM 950 DS RM-1118_13058 (059X5G2) to an ATT Lumia 950 (RM-1105_12716 059X4D9)
-1- First I flashed this specific original rom for my Dual Sim 950. I used the ffu located here.
-- thor2 -mode uefiflash -ffufile "RM1118_1078.0027.10586.13058.15358.030FF5_retail_ prod_signed.ffu"
-2- Second I manually pushed three cabs to my phone to alter the plat ID to Microsoft.MSM8992.P6218_ATT.1.0. All three were alone in the directory. Listed them below:
mmo.device_talkman_lte_americas.phone.plat_d20cefe ddb10fb6737b56fa966533783b1288e44.cab
mmo.base.variant.plat_55ce525fdf57ab0d614ada3517c3 4c84029f5437.cab
mmo.base.phone.plat_96ea6a2d24151eaf6299c342f81f49 997ca44137.cab
-- iutool.exe -v -p "C:\CABs\Your_Location-of-RM-1105_Plat-cabs"
-3- Third I did a full NVI flash and Reset with an ATT ROM. Link to location of ffu I used here.
FFU File used: RM1105_1078.0053.10586.13169.12716.035044_retail_ prod_signed.ffu
-- thor2 -mode uefiflash -ffufile "RM1105_1078.0053.10586.13169.12716.035044_retail_ prod_signed.ffu" -do_full_nvi_update -do_factory_reset
-4- Fourth I updated the product code. (Note: I never kept my phone on the ATT ROM long enough to see if this was really needed, but I suspected potentially an OTA update might revert it back to the Dual Sim variant.)
-- thor2 -mode uefiflash -ffufile RM1105_1078.0053.10586.13169.12716.035044_ret ail_prod_signed.ffu -productcodeupdate 059X4D9 -skip_flash
After it is finished while in this mode you can run thor2 -mode rnd -readdeviceinfo to check the device details also to verify the changes.
-5- Fifth I registered an imei of the att Lumia 950 I had to my ATT account to have ims registration complete.
Steps I used to convert back to NAM 950 DS RM-1118_13058 (059X5G2) from an ATT Lumia 950 (RM-1105_12716 059X4D9)
-1- First I flashed this specific ATT ROM. The one I used is located here.
-- thor2 -mode uefiflash -ffufile "RM1105_1078.0017.10586.13053.12716.02FBB4_retail_prod_signed.ffu"
-2- Second I manually pushed three cabs to my phone to alter the plat ID back to Microsoft.MSM8992.P6218.1.0. All three were alone in the directory. Listed them below:
mmo.base.phone.plat_8bab003dbd82a4acc5989f812a0dcd284eccfe43.cab
mmo.base.variant.plat_c7b2c481e64fe6a806f52df8f5f55c59fbb6a81e.cab
mmo.device_talkman_lte_row_dsds.phone.plat_d7303236cd88dda5a304701d5b59b0c2d5260d7c.cab
-- iutool.exe -v -p "C:\CABs\Your_Location-of-RM-1118_Plat-cabs"
-3- Third I did a full NVI flash and Reset with a NAM 950 DS ROM. Link to the ffu Iocation here.
FFU File used: RM1118_1078.0027.10586.13058.15358.030FF5_retail_prod_signed.ffu
-- thor2 -mode uefiflash -ffufile "RM1118_1078.0027.10586.13058.15358.030FF5_retail_prod_signed.ffu" -do_full_nvi_update -do_factory_reset
-4- Fourth I updated the product code back to the NAM Lumia 950 DS variant just in case.
-- thor2 -mode uefiflash -ffufile RM1118_1078.0027.10586.13058.15358.030FF5_retail_prod_signed.ffu" -productcodeupdate 059X5G2 -skip_flash
What helped immensely was being able to locate and find those cab files. They are added here for convenience. I found a thread posted here on the forums that helped a ton. Even if it was a cumulative effort, a thanks to @TristanLeBoss for posting it.
Thanks for your tutorial, OP.
In China most of us bought AT&T Variant Lumia 950 (RM-1105). However, the China Variant Firmware works best as far as I know.
Would you mind my repost it to Chinese Community?

What model is the Chinese variant? Is it a RM-1104?
To delete.
In that case being both are dual sim, in theory these directions should work. But I'm not certain if the cabs are identical or if the directions could be improved for that model. In either case you're more than welcome to use what I found here.
Edit: Wait my mistake were talking about the lumia 950 here...RM-1116 Is the xl.
Update: If the Chinese model is also an RM-1118 I'm not sure how that will work since I converted my dual sim RM-1118 to the AT&T single sim. You need to go from an AT&T single sim to a dual sim ROM...I simply lost the ability to use my second sim slot.
To delete.

In the past, I've flashed my Lumia 550 RM-1127 with a RM-1128 package (059X692 RM-1128 VAR NAM 4R CV) just with *.ffu file and full NVI update. So, flash *.cab files to modify Platform ID is specific to AT&T ?

Do the RM-1127 and RM-1128 have the same PlatformID?
The cab files in the RM-1105 folder allowed me to change the PlatformID of my Dual sim RM-1118 to match that of the AT&T variant. Only then I could flash the AT&T ROM to it.
To delete.

To be honnest, I hadn't carefull if the Platform ID matches beetween RM-1127 and RM-1128. But, I think they matches, because otherwise I would not have been able to flash so easily.
Yep, I know. You can see if Platform ID of RM-1118 matches with RM-1104 ?

I think the PlatformID matches between RM-1104 and RM-1118, but I'm not certain. Someone would need to verify that.

In Mainland China, Lumia 950 and 950 XL are RM-1118 and RM-1116. The code of 950 is 059X4Z0.
We have already tested RM-1116 China Variant Firmware on RM-1085 from Hong Kong or European countries even the prototype for Telstra in Australia, and RM-1118 China Variant Firmware Firmware on RM-1104 from Hong Kong and RM-1118 from US.
To delete.
I'll add also, that after flashing with the RM-1105 ROM I lost LTE band 17 but gained band 30.
The device also retained a device detail of TYPE being RM-1118 even though the product code and PlatformID were that of the RM-1105. You could see this using the device info command with thor2 or by going to Extras --> Advanced Info.

In China, we found it's possible to add another SIM slot on Lumia 950 RM-1104 and Lumia 950 XL RM-1085 bought from European countries or Hong Kong. After the modification and flash to China Variant Firmware, the second SIM slot works fine. The Typelabel is flashed along with VPL file, and the Typelabel doesn't change if you flash FFU only.
Because the China Variant Lumia 950/XL (RM-1118/1116) is much more expensive than other variant with only single SIM slot, Chinese resellers from Shenzhen have found a way to modify other variant of Lumia 950/XL into China Variant (RM-1105 AT&T Variant is not included right now).
BTW, my brand new Lumia 950 XL RM-1116 (Unlocked, Without Contract, China Variant) cost me 2,600 Chinese Yuan (About $376).

With this does that include a hardware modification?
Also, I'm curious and would like to know how popular Windows 10 Mobile is for China users?
Thanks.

Yes it is. Here's how it works: http://bbs.wfun.com/thread-966790-1-1.html
You may need a translator, it's in Chinese but lots of pictures provided.
In China, only minor users use Windows 10 Mobile, most of users use Android Phone or iPhone. If I met someone who use Lumia Phone or other else (e.g. HTC One M8 for Windows, HP Elite x3), I'd get excited and talk to him or her.
Hey guys, glad to see someone released this. Just to add to the guide, I successfully did this a few months ago, however to add to the OPs offering, my initial findings also allows you to flash a single sim rom to a DS*phone, along with a DS rom to single sim phone, however the main problem is that most of the update settings will not take affect because of the modem flashing is done in a way that the phone retains it on a separate partition on the phone that we don't have access too. The nvi flashing from a rom that is not native to the phone doesn't seem to flash or retain onto the phone. However this will definitely enable users to get raid of the ATT stock stuff. Something to also be extremely cautious too is that when using WDRT it sometime will not recognize the phone product code to recover and/or it will reflash the "stock" product code rom that was on the original phone, even if you updated the productcode throught thor2.

I am now curious if this type of scenario of applying a PlatformID change works for the XL model Any thoughts?
The reason I bring this up, and also strike my curiosity would be all the *8994*.dll and other files included on the 950 FFUs along with the 8992 files. Is the common theme between the xl and non-xl model? If so what purpose does that serve? Thanks.
Hey guys, I want to do this with my Lumia 950 XL Dual Sim (059X4S4) en convert it to single sim (059X4X5). Does anyone have the .CAB files needed to change the Platform ID or know where I can get them? I can't find them anywhere.

Most if not all Lumia FW are stored here. The one I pasted includes ffu's for 059X4X5. The PLAT ID change is only needed for certain Carrier variant device ROMs. I do not think you need to change the Platform ID for moving from the 059X4S4 product ROM to the 059X4X5 SS product ROM.
Thanks! I did indeed come across that website but I thought I also needed to change the PLAT ID.
I successfully flashed my 950XL with the 059X4X5 ROM.

How to unlock sim, unbrick, fix ramdom reboot loop on alcatel idol windows

I called the service
I described everything I did with it
they told me the motherboard was damaged
and that in an authorized service center would cost 5000 czk (239$) .......... somehow I do not want to believe that by deleting data from five items and by restarting the phone will damage the motherboard
New Alcatel 4s (6071w) costs $ 150 in US
New Alcatel 4Pro (6077x) costs 219 euros (277$) in Germany
I ordered it today
the injured person might get in some way

Download QXDM/QPST then boot into Factory mode. Connect with QXDM/QPST and let us know what you come up with. I recommend you back up the NV memory first before making changes.
There is a thread around about how to boot into facory mode using ffutool...
Edit: Also do know that altering the QC EFS data can cause your phone to not boot or become unstable.

I dont know.
Is this one:
microsoft.com/en-ca/store/d/alcatel-idol-4s-unlocked/93t646gz04f7/07gb?activetab=pivot%3aoverviewtab
They say this in the specs:
GSM network: 850/900/1800/1900, UMTS 2/4/5, LTE 2/4/12
So i'm afraid that i have no access to 4G network in Vodafone Portugal.
Even 3G, it sims to cover only one of the two frequencies used by Vodafone in Portugal.

Is the IDOL 4 Pro (EURO Variant) not available or too expensive to go with instead? That is the model that supports the needed frequencies for Europe....
EDIT:
Code:
Alcatel IDOL 4 Pro Specifications.........
[B]GSM Band 850/900/1800/1900
LTE Bands 1/3/7/8/20/28A/38
[/B]Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
Wi-Fi Calling 1.0
Idol 4 pro is not available in Serbia, I for really long time use Windows Phone and I em satisfied with it. Friend of mine offered knowing that I love windows phones to bay me Alcatel Idol 4S North America version. Price is very tempting and I accepted but main reason is that I want to stay on Windows Phone for few years more.

The european version, sell in UK, for example, costs almost 500€ and the canadian/USA version costs less then 100€
I live in Serbia, Serbia is not yet part of European union so European model is not available in Serbia. Even if it's available it is to expensive for me ☺ . Mine only question is for supported basebands, it's confusing because on Microsoft store spec are umts bands 2,4,5 and people here are claiming 1,2,4,5 . LTE bands are even more confusing. Is there anybody that used this Phone ( Microsoft GSM unlocked version ) outside US and Canada to share experience.
Phone has arrived and I am truly impressed. I don't have lte band but it's not deal breaker for me. 2G 3G and 4G working great and I am happy to rapport so if anybody has doubt it will work in Europe.
Did anybody find the way to unlock more lte bands. I read that it is not so easy like on Lumia phones. It is necessary to unlock bootloader and after that it is theoretically possible to change modem configuration.

If your referring to the Idol 4s, I wouldn't waste too much time. There have been attempts to do this on the open market model that have failed. If you need the phone to work in European countries you should buy the Idol 4 pro.
You can still attempt it if you want but if you don't know where to start then you're already asking for problems..
Just do searches in Google and on XDA if you need more resources. Note that you risk bricking your device or making it unstable too.

Lumia 550 update

Hello ! Any way to get my Lumia 550 straight to FCU starting from 10586.494? I mean skipping the two steps in the middle (AU and CU). There could be a way using Over the Cable Updater or is there the firmware itself somewhere in the web which I can flash?

Windows 10 Mobile has no planned feature updates past FCU. The latest build should be 15254. Last I checked, the Lumia 550 continues to be supported thru the end of this year. In April, all users running build 15063 were bumped to 15063.1029. My Lumia 830 received that update (despite being shut out of the feature2 branch). You should check for that update first. It would be best to avoid that update on a metered connection.

Yes I know that. I was looking for a way to avoid to get through the annoying process of update from the old November Update (because I had to recover my Lumia with WDRT) and jump straight to FCU. So flashing some FCU firmware or other ways...

There is no way unless you would have someone to dump a custom ROM supporting your device from the 550 somewhere at like version 15063.297 at least or another later supported version if possible. You could always attempt to dump one your self in the event you have to completely Reset with WDRT on that device in the future. But that is up to you...You would need to read up on the Window Phone internals tool and create a custom rom that way.
edit: Actually I just looked and seems certain variants of the 550 have FW revisions all the way up to OS 10.0.10586.494. If you want further than that a custom rom is the only option.
