Why are there so little Oreo Roms? - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

Very few Oreo roms, some are just OOS 5.0 based. I was hoping to flash a LineageOS 15 rom by now, but there are none. Even the redmi note 4 devices have working Oreo roms although not that stable but can be used as daily drivers , but not a One plus device famed for having great developer support?

I check the 1st page of "OnePlus 3 & 3T Cross Device Development" and see seven ROMs based on Android 8.0, so... what was your problem again?!
Btw, ROMs don't just exist here, check these, too: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ground-zero-roms/ground-zero-roms-feature-development

I wouldnt count on los 15 any time soon. Los is one of the lat ones to update officially. There are many 8.0 roms. As stated, not all are on XDA.

The thing is moat roms are all the same. Just different cherry pics. There are only like 4 or 5 original roms that are not based off each other.

I tried LOS when it came out, but moved back to official beta when Oreo came out.
So which one is the best?
I think OOS is ok, and everything works, but are any of the custom roms as stable with most things working?

It would also seem there are no 8.1 ROMs for the OP3!

That's because there are things in 8.1 that are not backwards compatible with 8.0

Oh its not that it was just released. Google made something in 8.1 nor backwards compatible with 8.0 So many roms will have to start over on some things or skip 8.1

Oh thats a shame. So maybe only some of the bigger ROMs will be supporting 8.1? A lot of ROMs don't have a stable 8.0 release yet, so I am betting most will skip.

Stable is a matter of thought really. Like my device has been running 8.0 from a bug team since the second day 8.0 was released and its a one plus device.
I have not personally looked into the changes in 8.1 yet. (winter In Alaska is a busy time) I'm sure they will come but it might take them starting from scratch. If this becomes habit on Googles part, the future looks bleak for flashaholics

Yeah was using DU Oreo and its REALLY stable. Only thing I would say is that after you turn off phone it takes approx 7-8 seconds before you can turn on with fingerprint sensor again for some reason. I flash like literally every 2-3 days. I like trying new ROMs.

Yeah I prefer placement on back, but wouldn't it be nicer to have an awkward placement than an extra couple seconds unlocking via pattern or pin?

Hey. Where Can I find DU oreo?

If you all will think back to the previous new android versions, what really kicks off a bunch of new roms and cherry picks is when Resurrection Remix and Slim comes out.......which hasn't happened yet and certainly is taking a bit longer than in previous versions. Don't worry, the floodgates will open soon.

Umm not really. RR is just what we call a kitchen sink rom. It just cherry picked features from other roms while using a LOS base. Slim has been going down hill for a couple of years and will most likely very soon die off.
People are soo worried about more roms. More is not always better. Also dont forget that 8.1 changed alot and its not really compatible with alot of 8.0 stuff so many are starting over for the things that need to be changed.

Stay with Stock for now... Oreo is still new for the MZP enjoy it.
There's no stable Oreo ROM as of now, and stock Oreo is better than most of the nougat builds, so I guess we need to wait for some time for a good MZP Oreo build.

How is "stable" is defined in this context? (Serious question, not a challenge or a troll) Is a ROM just informally judged as "stable" by general consensus, or it some formal release or declaration that makes it "officially" stable?
I installed RR 6.1 (O 8.1) 8 days ago and haven't had a single glitch (literally, not a single issue). I know that's only one data point though.

Yes, most of the development teams do that (even RR).
They're just termed based on the development state of that ROM, The Official ROMs (stable) are released after fixing the known bugs or issues, where as the other builds like beta, nightlies (daily), weekly builds are initial builds which needs to be worked on to resolve the bugs or issues.
I've used AOSP based Oreo just for gcam but went back to stock after a while because of some bugs, even if you tried it for a week you might not have used all the functions right.
So at the end it all comes down to your personal flavor.
If you're okay with the build, you can use it as your daily driver.

I think it's amazing, but i don't have the best frame of reference because I can't really differentiate between the device and the ROM. I purchased the MZP just a couple weeks ago from a guy who had put O 8.0 stock on it, then I almost immediately put RR on it. So I don't have a real baseline to compare to. I can say that using BBS on a 12hr overnight idle test I get 0.1%/hr which I consider excellent.

Cool, thanks for the info. This is just anecdotal but I'll say that I've explored this ROM pretty darn thoroughly (hours and hours, literally), partially because it is this first new ROM I've had since a custom L 5.0 (GoldenEye) that I've been running on my GS4 for the last 4 years, and partially because I'm neurotic and want to explore and tweak everything, it's a sickness lol.. I won't claim to have run it through the full battery of SW dev QA testing, but I have used it VERY extensively, fwiw.
I use Alberto97's AOSP 8.1 as a daily. A close second for me would be AmulyaX's 7.1.2. Both rock solid for me.

Where are the Android 9 ROMs at?

Seriously. ROMs used to be available on the Nexus withint 3-4 days. Now we got treble(have ported the image from a Pixel as well) and yet there are NO custom Android 9 ROMs. It's hit AOSP for 5 days already.
it is best to wait for official Pie from OnePlus and official kernel source for Pie
the hard work will be on them this way
developers will work hard to get a stable Pie port then all this work will go away when official Pie is available as it will be a btter base

Maybe not many devs for Oneplus devices compared to nexus i guess. Aosp builds hit nexus devices within few hours those days. Suprised to see completely working Pie build already for Xiaomi note 4 though.
I'm just surprised the OnePlus 3/3T got Android 9 before we did (considering it's an older phone and all)

What camera app do you use? I tried the special apk with the settings fix flashed, still it's really bad. Images are always out of focus and lack detail. I tried using the fixed camera libraries and use the arnova's gcam app but without any luck. I am interested in what others may use.

Well, its not built from AOSP I guess. Its just a system image from different pie device ported. So cannot be optimised and have bugs.

I refuse to use mokee to get proper treble support. For two reasons. One, OnePlus needs to implement it properly so that drivers are stable and etc. Two, Mokee has a terrible kernel which results in terrible SoT.
I must admit that I am generally a bit disappointed in the ROM situation with the 5t.
I always thought that Oneplus phones were among the most hacked ones out there and I expected A LOT more than what there is...

There are custom kernels to flash. With custom kernel it's actually pretty efficient. Getting same SOT and idle time as I wad getting in 8. 1 custom roms.

True! But atm the new gesture navigation and NFC isn't working yet and those 2 things are mandatory for me before I start flashing
2 short questions:
1. Is treble needed for the AOSP Rom?
2. Can I root my 5t without loosing my data and keeping my bootloader?

Keep it with the stock rom. That's the best for me. I was a flasholic until I bought Pixel XL.

I dabble a bit with the other Tom's here but always end up on stock with root and a kernel.
Pixel dust is nice though, so is lineage.... Well they are all nice, but I'd run stock for a while

Bootleggers
My goto is KingKernel, with blackened mod. Many choices of governors, I/O schedulers, network TCP. Then you can decide which works for your needs. With a little practice, patience try them all
I must be the only one who keeps going back to Android O. I tried P three different times now. Each time I wipe my phone and start from scratch but still immediately notice worse battery life. Doesn't matter it I'm stock or on a ROM.. and then as soon as I go back to oreo it gets better. That said I'm probably gonna try PixelDust for Oreo I guess cause I am getting bored with stock
If you want an official custom rom with quick updates and a large community then go with Liquid Remix, they've been around forever for a reason and have roms for many devices.
If you want a rom that does NOT include any of googles apps (instead of Google Phone/Calculator/ETC you'll get base android ones) then go Lineage. It's a solid rom that packs just as much customization as the others but is unique in its own way.
If you want (imo) the best rom and can wait for updates patiently then go Pixel Dust rom. It's more akin to Liquid Remix than Lineage, doesn't update as often (monthly instead of a few times a month) but has a few features the other roms don't (custom launcher, a few unique setting options).
I myself haven't had much luck with bootleggers or benzo rom, so the above 3 are my goto's.

Stock rom, flash king kernel and magisk with LKT set to balance, im hitting 6h sot instead of stock 3.5h
Still rocking Dirtyunicorn 12.3 aka 8.1 until DU pie comes out!Sean
I don't necessarily have the time to be flashing between various custom ROMs and seeing what works and all that nowadays, so I usually just stick to LineageOS and the kernel they include with that. There's an unofficial LOS 16 (Pie) ROM provided by a maintainer of LOS for this device that works relatively well in my experience.
Liquid is best for me. Lots of options no slow downs it reboots. It just works.

I was able to run it smooth only with Franco Kernel, but King kernel even on "performance" profile still lags horribly.

The fact that it is T-mobile shouldnt matter, its the same model as the NA/Global variant. Custom ROM's are in the works. Once one becomes public, the scene will explode with others able to cherry pick what they need.

This is true - My last Op7pro I bought about 9 months after release, and there was a twrp etc etc by then, so just give it more time, this phone is really new.
Off topic, but is anybody else sick of the overheating? FML, I hate this phone cuz of that only, wish they'd fix it somehow (yeah right lol)...

I'm really hoping to see ROMs make better use of the LTPO display for power saving. As is, it pretty much always runs at 120 and then sometimes drops to 60. I feel like it should drop to 60 any time im not touching it, and even lower if theres no media player. my settings app does not need to sit at 120hz lol

Right but Nostalgia aside, CrDroid or dare I say vanilla Lineage are far better options - in my humble opinion.
I'm only saying this because I flashed havoc on 3 different devices, and it's always been riddled with bugs and broken features.

Help with choice of rom for rn8p

Hello,I will soon be receiving a Redmi Note 8 Pro from a friend and I immediately started searching for a custom rom to use.I have narrowed it down to 3 and would like your help choosing one. What I'm looking for mostly is a smooth rom that will still be receiving updates.
What I wanted the most is Lineage OS(since I use it on my Rn6p and I love it) but the device was not supported ,however recently someone built it(unofficially).
You can see it here: https://t.me/RedmiNote8ProOfficial/923501
He mentioned in the comments that he will be updating it once a month which I guess is good enough.
Now my other 2 choices are Corvus OS and Pixel Experience which are both official.
So does anyone has experience with any of these roms to share with me?Thanks a lot in advance and sorry if I somehow broke a rule,it's my first time posting.
I'd go PE+

Hello,I will soon be receiving a Redmi Note 8 Pro from a friend and I immediately started searching for a custom rom to use.I have narrowed it down to 3 and would like your help choosing one. What I'm looking for mostly is a smooth rom that will still be receiving updates.
What I wanted the most is Lineage OS(since I use it on my Rn6p and I love it) but the device was not supported ,however recently someone built it(unofficially).
You can see it here: https://t.me/RedmiNote8ProOfficial/923501

I don't think the LineageOS FE you posted has a working front camera.
I personally use PE+ from May (the release from July has some serious battery drain courtesy of Xiaomi MIUI 12.5.x buggy release).

The lineage version i posted is not the FE one. It's original but unofficial release.
How often does PE+ gets updates?

Indeed, it's not the FE. I'm a fan of LineageOS and I'm going read more about it.
PE/PE+ usually gets updates about once a month.

If you find anything important about it and it's not too much trouble inform me too please because I haven't been able to find anything about it.
If it gets updated once a month I like it, though if that LineageOS turns out to be good, PE+ would still be my 2nd choice.

Biggest issue for me right now is the battery drain in the latest release (July), so that's why I've downgraded to the May release.
Once the battery drain issue is fixed I'll go back to using the latest version.
I might try that LineageOS release too.
