Where are the Android 9 ROMs at? - OnePlus 5T Questions & Answers

Seriously. ROMs used to be available on the Nexus withint 3-4 days. Now we got treble(have ported the image from a Pixel as well) and yet there are NO custom Android 9 ROMs. It's hit AOSP for 5 days already.

it is best to wait for official Pie from OnePlus and official kernel source for Pie
the hard work will be on them this way
developers will work hard to get a stable Pie port then all this work will go away when official Pie is available as it will be a btter base

Maybe not many devs for Oneplus devices compared to nexus i guess. Aosp builds hit nexus devices within few hours those days. Suprised to see completely working Pie build already for Xiaomi note 4 though.

I'm just surprised the OnePlus 3/3T got Android 9 before we did (considering it's an older phone and all)

We have, and working fine. Using it as my daily driver since 2 weeks.

What camera app do you use? I tried the special apk with the settings fix flashed, still it's really bad. Images are always out of focus and lack detail. I tried using the fixed camera libraries and use the arnova's gcam app but without any luck. I am interested in what others may use.

Well, its not built from AOSP I guess. Its just a system image from different pie device ported. So cannot be optimised and have bugs.

I refuse to use mokee to get proper treble support. For two reasons. One, OnePlus needs to implement it properly so that drivers are stable and etc. Two, Mokee has a terrible kernel which results in terrible SoT.

I must admit that I am generally a bit disappointed in the ROM situation with the 5t.
I always thought that Oneplus phones were among the most hacked ones out there and I expected A LOT more than what there is...

There are custom kernels to flash. With custom kernel it's actually pretty efficient. Getting same SOT and idle time as I wad getting in 8. 1 custom roms.

Our prayers have been answered. And the best part is that the rom is not featureshitbuggybloated, it is pure AOSP!

True! But atm the new gesture navigation and NFC isn't working yet and those 2 things are mandatory for me before I start flashing
2 short questions:
1. Is treble needed for the AOSP Rom?
2. Can I root my 5t without loosing my data and keeping my bootloader?

1. No.
2. No. Unlocking bootloader will erase your data.

Why are there so little Oreo Roms?

Very few Oreo roms, some are just OOS 5.0 based. I was hoping to flash a LineageOS 15 rom by now, but there are none. Even the redmi note 4 devices have working Oreo roms although not that stable but can be used as daily drivers , but not a One plus device famed for having great developer support?
I check the 1st page of "OnePlus 3 & 3T Cross Device Development" and see seven ROMs based on Android 8.0, so... what was your problem again?!
Btw, ROMs don't just exist here, check these, too: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ground-zero-roms/ground-zero-roms-feature-development

The thing is moat roms are all the same. Just different cherry pics. There are only like 4 or 5 original roms that are not based off each other.
I tried LOS when it came out, but moved back to official beta when Oreo came out.
So which one is the best?
I think OOS is ok, and everything works, but are any of the custom roms as stable with most things working?
It would also seem there are no 8.1 ROMs for the OP3!

Stable is a matter of thought really. Like my device has been running 8.0 from a bug team since the second day 8.0 was released and its a one plus device.
I have not personally looked into the changes in 8.1 yet. (winter In Alaska is a busy time) I'm sure they will come but it might take them starting from scratch. If this becomes habit on Googles part, the future looks bleak for flashaholics

Yeah was using DU Oreo and its REALLY stable. Only thing I would say is that after you turn off phone it takes approx 7-8 seconds before you can turn on with fingerprint sensor again for some reason. I flash like literally every 2-3 days. I like trying new ROMs.

Hey. Where Can I find DU oreo?
If you all will think back to the previous new android versions, what really kicks off a bunch of new roms and cherry picks is when Resurrection Remix and Slim comes out.......which hasn't happened yet and certainly is taking a bit longer than in previous versions. Don't worry, the floodgates will open soon.

Umm not really. RR is just what we call a kitchen sink rom. It just cherry picked features from other roms while using a LOS base. Slim has been going down hill for a couple of years and will most likely very soon die off.
People are soo worried about more roms. More is not always better. Also dont forget that 8.1 changed alot and its not really compatible with alot of 8.0 stuff so many are starting over for the things that need to be changed.

Recommend to me a good Oreo rom

Hey guys
I previously owned a Redmi Note 3 and flashed so many roms on that phone.
Now i just got a Redmi Note 5 Pro. Unlocked it. But currently I am very busy with assignments and don't have a lot of time.
So i can't keep flashing rom every few days.
Please recommend me a good Oreo rom. It should ideally not lag and have no random reboots. Basically I just want to flash and forget for a few months until Pie roms get very stable.
Thanks to all for their help.

Bro listen! Lineage os is most widely used custom rom in the world. Your device has official lineage os 15.1. So you should flash it & see if you're happy with it. Only customizations not present in los. After that you can try any other rom you want.

"Bro listen" - This does not sound like suggestion, rather like a command. What is good for you does not really mean that it will be for someone else. For example, on devices I have used, RN5 included, pure AOSP roms performed better than Cyanogenmod/LineageOS ones. They have been smoother and better in battery life.
Just because something is official it doesn't translate to a better than everything else, MIUI is an official rom from Xiaomi yet some releases were a bug fest.
I've tried LOS/RR and than jumped to AOSiP Oreo, that's close to pure AOSP but with additional useful features and it has been more stable, smoother and more battery friendly than LOS/RR and overall performance was consistent. In combination with Insigniux/Derp kernel it's great.
I've seen reports of MSM as great one as well, so that can be considered as well.
Anyway you'll have to try different rom and kernel combinations to see what works for you.

Exactly.
Although I can understand why some newer members are just dazzled by the "official" tag especially in context of LOS.
I especially dislike LOS because of lack of so many useful features. Why should I need to use xposed and 10 modules to get those features when I have root and recovery and I can simply flash a feature rich aosp rom.

Ok. I apologise if i gave someone wrong suggestion. But i was telling from my experience as for me los official always works great with no single bug till now. What i've seen is people sometimes complain a lot about problems in other new roms. So i was saying in that way. Thanks for your suggestion. I'll flash aosip with derp kernel.
One question tho. I want an oreo rom with battery life similar to miui 9.6. can you suggest me that rom? Miui 9.6 is giving me 12 hrs & 13 minutes of screen on time. Thanks in advance.

No need to apologise to me, since your post wasn't directed to me. You didn't suggest anything wrong, but the way you suggested it was a bit wrong. Anyway, AOSiP is a clean rom with good features and a default Derp kernel is great for battery life, I have had up to 14h of SOT (that depends on usage of course) but as far as I remember it was never below 10h.

Keep it with the stock rom. That's the best for me. I was a flasholic until I bought Pixel XL.
Same.
I dabble a bit with the other Tom's here but always end up on stock with root and a kernel.
Pixel dust is nice though, so is lineage.... Well they are all nice, but I'd run stock for a while

Thanks! But when it come to kernels, which on should I use?
Bootleggers
My goto is KingKernel, with blackened mod. Many choices of governors, I/O schedulers, network TCP. Then you can decide which works for your needs. With a little practice, patience try them all
I must be the only one who keeps going back to Android O. I tried P three different times now. Each time I wipe my phone and start from scratch but still immediately notice worse battery life. Doesn't matter it I'm stock or on a ROM.. and then as soon as I go back to oreo it gets better. That said I'm probably gonna try PixelDust for Oreo I guess cause I am getting bored with stock
If you want an official custom rom with quick updates and a large community then go with Liquid Remix, they've been around forever for a reason and have roms for many devices.
If you want a rom that does NOT include any of googles apps (instead of Google Phone/Calculator/ETC you'll get base android ones) then go Lineage. It's a solid rom that packs just as much customization as the others but is unique in its own way.
If you want (imo) the best rom and can wait for updates patiently then go Pixel Dust rom. It's more akin to Liquid Remix than Lineage, doesn't update as often (monthly instead of a few times a month) but has a few features the other roms don't (custom launcher, a few unique setting options).
I myself haven't had much luck with bootleggers or benzo rom, so the above 3 are my goto's.

Stock rom, flash king kernel and magisk with LKT set to balance, im hitting 6h sot instead of stock 3.5h
Still rocking Dirtyunicorn 12.3 aka 8.1 until DU pie comes out!Sean
I don't necessarily have the time to be flashing between various custom ROMs and seeing what works and all that nowadays, so I usually just stick to LineageOS and the kernel they include with that. There's an unofficial LOS 16 (Pie) ROM provided by a maintainer of LOS for this device that works relatively well in my experience.
Liquid is best for me. Lots of options no slow downs it reboots. It just works.

Does you device lag with LKT and King Kernel?
I was able to run it smooth only with Franco Kernel, but King kernel even on "performance" profile still lags horribly.
Im currently on ElementalX with feb security update, lkt not needed to hit 5+ sot
And yes phone was a bit laggy but since the pixel for me is so fast, i didn't really mind much

What's the best ROM available right now? (as of 29th Feb 2020)

So, there's plenty of ROM options available to us currently. I've been hesitating massively on trying any of them due to being a bit burned by previous experiences with some not so great ROMs on other phones I've had previously. So tell me, in your opinion, what's the best ROM available right now? I'm looking for things that have the good battery life, a mostly lag-free experience, the less bugs the better, etc. The best overall ROM in general, basically. If you're using a custom kernal too instead of stock or the one that comes with the ROM, please mention it in a reply along with what you voted for.
Thanks!
I currently use POSP v3.1+8. This ROM is great if you want a proper taste of Android Q. I am using the stock kernel that comes with the ROM and opengapps pico package. I've never had any problems so far, but that's mainly because I don't use social media apps like Instagram. The software has its bugs and the battery life isn't great yet, but the Dev is working diligently to squish the bugs and that's what makes it for me. Best battery life and stability you can have is on Stock right now, especially if you debloat the ROM using shell, battery life is superb. I just can't stand Pie's ugly interface. MIUI ROM is sooo amazing, except for some little performance issues, especially on recents screen. MIUI ROM effectively transforms your Mi A2 Lite into a Redmi 6 Pro. But I've had a lot of privacy concerns over it. ROM's not open-source and Google + Xiaomi apps come preinstalled. If you respect your privacy MIUI is not the ROM for you. Pixel Experience on the other hand was a total mess. A lot of bugs + bad battery life. I haven't tried the other ROMs mentioned, but Stock Oreo is the way, if you want amazing stability, proper Gcam + incredible battery life. I literally could not drain the battery on Oreo. If you like the UI of them, stock ROMs are the way to go for stability. I'm using POSP because I just want the new features that Xiaomi should've provided us a loooong time ago.

I'm currently using this rom, in my opinion the best rom, even if without updates maybe I'll switch back to POSP later, but the battery consumption (idle) has to get even better.

Heyo Lacia here!
Do you have telegram by any chance since i released some stuff on there for POSP and if you want to use POSP i heavily recommend flashing the chunchunmaru!_r3.1 kernel too. Too improve SOT and Idle drain and fix some smaller bugs like DT2W and Data usage not working

I'm currently using this rom, in my opinion the best rom, even if without updates maybe I'll switch back to POSP later, but the battery consumption (idle) has to get even better.

Did you try using Chunchunmaru!_r3.1 ?
No, I will stay with LineageOS for now and wait a few more weeks until POSP is really mature
No Pixel Experience 100% stable for A2 Lite?
I came from a Note 5 with Pixel Experience and Gcam 100% working, but my display broke so I buy a A2 Lite, but the scene looks slightly poor for me
Wich is the best 100% stable rom and Gcam (if exists)?

Theres no 100% stable rom. I mean atm all of them have some minor bugs and gcam often freeze and reboot the phone. At least this was my experience with roms and gcam... Every time I try roms I just get fed up with (mostly gcam being slow and buggy) so I'm going back to stock after a couple of weeks.
Anyways try posp with the recommended kernel. Also you can find gcam at the themes forum here on xda.

Thanks. I'm reading a lot of bad reports about the Android 10 stock rom, is this true? ?Maybe is better I continue in 9?
And at last, we didn't really have a stable GCAM? This is like a punch in the face for me
Thanks a lot.
Lineage OS 16. This phone would be awesome if it had proper Lineage support.

Don't expect a stable build of 10 from Xiaomi soon. We had a Gcam configured for A2 Lite by hass31 but it doesn't work properly on stock Pie and it will NOT work on 10. Other than that I'm currently using the gcam in the apps and themes forum with the provided xml. It works wonders but video doesn't work. I've noticed that video recording on stock vs gcam doesn't make much of a difference.
Try HybridOS but high battery drain is still issue

What all Oxygen OS features will I miss if switch to custom ROM?

My previous phone was Lenovo ZUK Z2 Plus and it had a ton of custom ROMs and features. But even though the 7T doesn't have a large number of custom ROMs, I'm very happy with the Oxygen OS since it very similar to the stock Android and has necessary features.
I want to know that what all Oxygen OS unique features will I miss if I switched to a custom ROM? I mean the features that won't get in any custom ROM. I know the features that present in every custom ROMs but I can't figure out which unique feature will I miss from Oxygen OS.
Nothing
You'll lose face unlock. I haven't found one yet that has it
You'll miss the following things:
1.Proper refresh rate switching
2.Reliable fp
3.OIS
4.Pro mode
5.48 mp
6.Portrait.
7. Fix for wide angle distortion
8. Noise reduction
9. Good battery life
10. Stability
Don't bother flashing custom ROMs if you need everything working and want peace of mind. Sure you can use gcam on custom ROMs but that still doesn't fix OIS, pro mode,48 mp and wide angle distortion
You'll lose stability. There are no proper Custom ROMs for this device yet.
Besides, OxygenOS already feels like a very stable custom rom so why bother anyway?
Just flash beta if you're really itching to try something "new".

Thanks all for the answers. I've been using custom ROMs (even developed a few) since the decade old Samsung Galaxy Y S5360 to the Lenovo ZUK Z2 Plus, and I always preferred those with both feature rich and similar to stock Android. The Oxygen OS is very well polished, stable and looks very similar to the stock Android, and since I started using my OnePlus 7T I even forgot about custom ROMs. After reading your points I think it is better to stay away from custom ROMs. If this was a few years ago I wouldn't have a second thought, I'd definitely try them. Don't know what is pulling me back (age ??). Anyways thank you all again.

I bought a OnePlus device because I thought I'll be flashing a lot of ROMs and kernels like my Nexus devices.
It turned out to be quite different since there's not even an official TWRP (yet).
Don't even bother, I have tested all available custom roms and returned to stock after a week of use. When you flash custom rom, at first looks like a refreshment, something different, but after a few days of use, you will notice problems (bugs). On one of the custom roms, my phone just shut it self, an I was not able to boot anymore. So, Oxygen is still the best, fastest and most stable. I think that One Plus has the best software on the market, and because of that, it was my choice

Who told you this?
I am having a much better time on AOSiP than OOS. Probably TreskMod too, and soon Paranoid Android.

1. already exist
2. Almost on par with OOS
3. This is hardware, of course there is
4 , 5 , 6 , 7: Maybe Gcam can do something about this? Arnova recently posted a new version with lots of fixes specifically for OnePlus devices.
9. I have pretty much the same as OOS
10. Choose a good ROM with a developer that actually knows what he is doing and you won't have any problems.
Have you guys even tried a custom ROM?

Yes I have tried all of them! And doesn't matter which custom rom, OOS is hard to beat this time.
Combined with Arters kernel you will get the best battery results! On custom rom you could only dream about it.
Im a guy who always flash custom roms, but this time i'll stay on oxy. Treskmod is a great alternative, but you won't get same SOT as OOS + arter.

That's what I think the reason for me not rooting as well. Age and new edition of kids...twin boys to be exact in my life. And raising them alone is the biggest so time if a factor. I will admit I miss a few things which require root like ad adaway, Viper mod, various simple edits like turning on features like caller ID and other little stuff, and prob a few other things. But it is what it is. I bet sports using a app from Station Casinos in Vegas and the app will not work it won't let you sign in with dev options unlocked and I have a feeling it will def not if root in enabled. I'd have to decompile the app and figure out where the controller is for that and changed it but after I do that it will prob get updated like always happens and have to do it again so I'm just riding stock but I can't lie the itch is strong!

1.Not as good as OOS
2.Nope,fod-ext is unreliable, especially at low brightness on 7t
3. Try capturing a video on custom ROM vs OOS and then come back. Yes it's hardware based but not 'only-hardware' based
4,5,6,7 Yeah gcam is good but it's not possible to fix wide and distortion and pro mode stuff
Yes,I've tried every damn custom ROM which exists for 7t and I've returned to OOS,Everytime!

Yeah,if someone still needs to try out custom ROM, definitely try AOSiP and treskmod. Treskmod will give slightly lesser battery life than OOS/AOSiP tho. And don't expect PA for 7t to materialize, that herna dude has ruined PA for both 7t and overall.
