I ordered a Mi 6 from GearBest, should I replace the ROM when it arrives? - Xiaomi Mi 6 Questions & Answers

Hello. I have already placed the order a few days ago. My brother sent me some coupon for a 128gb ceramic version and I didn't understand how they sell it so considerably cheaper than on other websites, but now I realize it is probably because the units they use are the China version with the ROM replaced by the store. They call it "international version" rather than "global version" to be confusing.
Their selection of different versions available for purchase was also confusing, but now I realize the one option they named "GLOBAL VERSION 6GB RAM 64GB ROM" which is considerably more expensive is the only official global version (it is even more expensive than the 128gb Mi 6 available in my country's local shops, which is weird because the shops here sell official global models).
Anyway, to my understanding hardware-wise the China and the official global models of the Mi 6 are identical (they support the same frequency bands). My order will probably come with China charger and an adapter, though. But with regards to the ROM, to my understanding these resellers put what you people call a "shop ROM", which is not an exact version of the official global ROM? What's the difference? I'm afraid they might be adding "unwanted software" when they're modifying the ROM, so I want to know whether I can (and should) wipe their shop ROM and install the official Xiaomi one.
Thanks in advance.

Flashing a global rom doesn't take much don't be worried
But you need to spend 3 days at least with the current rom as you have to wait for xiaomi to let you unlock the bootloader
So get it request unlocking your device and connect your device to your mi account
Then just wait for 3 days and flash the new rom

Hello, thanks for the reply.
I've read some earlier posts of people trying to flash official global ROMs on their store-ROM Chinese Xiaomis and getting a brick. Apparently there's a certain way to get it done as some said it worked in the end.
But, I didn't understand whether OTA works afterwards or you need to manually install the new ROM whenever an update is available? Is there also any security concerns when using a phone with store ROM flashed by GearBest?

I don't have knowledge about "store rom"
But i believe the hardware is the same
I don't think you end up with a brick
Always stick with official global rom if you are concerned about security stff
Anyways the OTA won't be too much necessary for me at least because i wanted that google camera app so much so i rooted it eventually and also there forum is a nice place they post the updates and its eazy to download and install

Rooting disables OTA? I'm not really familiar with Android modding.
Let's see if anyone here is familiar with the specific situation I'm asking about.

I ordered a MI6 couple months ago and it came with the Global Stable and with the bootloader unlocked. Everything works as it should since then. I even flashed a TWRP and I currently use a custom ROM
Also, since I have a partnership with the GearBest, they stopped flashing their phones with fake ROMs and they only flash Global ROMs if they are available.

As you, I got the ceramic version from Gearbest through a temporary special offer, at a very convenient price, much lower than the standard version.
It arrived in Dec. (ca. 1 month for delivery to Italy) with the official global stable, and was perfectly usable just out of the box.
From that, moving to the global developer was almost immediate, without unlocking the bootloader.
I am now using a custom rom, mainly because they claim the GPS settings are better optimized for western countries and because I hope a (more) usable porting of the google camera will be soon or later available.

So how can I verify whether the version installed is the official global ROM instead of a "fake ROM"? Why were GearBest even using fake ROMs?
And I understand the bootloader must come already unlocked by the store?
Regarding the price: I paid for the ceramic 128gb $389. For the "global 64gb" version, GearBest ask for $506. I can find in local stores a 128gb Mi 6 for about $500 (and less than $450 in a city except from VAT); I don't know whether it is ceramic or glass, but I assume the stores here sell the official global model, so it's quite weird GearBest ask for more money for a 64gb version than what the 128gb version goes for locally.
(btw, is there any glass screen protector you recommend? I can't find anything that's certainly good. I can see almost all options don't completely cover the front, but I'll be using a case as well.)

The MIUI version is indicated in the settings. A google search can confirm if it is an original Xiaomi rom or not. Anyway I got almost immediately the OTA update to the latest global. Possibly they developed these "fake roms" to sell xiaomi phones outside China when no official translations of miui were available

Yes, it's weird. maybe the ceramic version is not so popular? It is a nice object, but damn slippery and heavy. I also paid it around 350 euros, that was less than the standard 128, but more than the 64.

Yeah, I heard some reviews of Xiaomi phones referring to how they used to have bad English translations. Perhaps they were talking about the phones that came with "fake ROMs".

But isn't unlocking the bootloader required in order to flash a different ROM on an Android phone?

I'm not sure whether the local stores sell the ceramic version. I'm referring to how the local stores should usually sell the official global version and yet the 128gb offered here is cheaper than the global 64gb offered on GearBest.
I ended up ordering the "original Xiaomi silicone soft case" and some screen protector called "Asling" from GB. Used some of the GB points gained from the Mi 6 purchase to get a few dollars off, though it seems to limit how big of a discount you may claim in regards to the size of the purchase, so it didn't allow me to use all of the points.

Sure. if the phone was released with the global miui directly by xiaomi the bootloader is locked and the only rom you can install without unlocking is the global developer (look at the miui site).
For using any other rom you have to unlock the bootloader, flash recovery, flash rom, ...etc. There are a number of detailed guides around.
If the phone comes with a shop rom, or the global miui was installed by the shop, it could happen that the bootloader is already unlocked, but I think that this case now is almost improbable.

But if the phone I will be getting, and most likely the one you have ordered from GearBest as well, is the China model, why would it come directly from Xiaomi's factory with the Global ROM? The main reasoning behind the lower price for these China units when their frequency support is actually the same is that they're only ment for the Chinese market when they leave the factory with the Chinese ROM. The other differences is the Chinese type plug on the charger and the Chinese writing on the back of the phone (does yours have it?), but combining these with Global ROM on Xiaomi's behalf seems strange...
MAYBE they make these for foreigners living in China (though I don't think installing the phone with Google services when it's intended for local usage is allowed in China), but perhaps there's simply a way to relock to bootloader and that is what GearBest is doing?

mi 6 64gb version
i have received today the 64gb version i have ordered from gearbest for 352$. after seeing this article i still have my suspicious about the originality of this rom.
here is a pic of the specs below, i think it will be helpful for me and the other who seek to find the true.

Looks fine to me.
Is there an update available bringing you to MIUI 9?
You can also check if the bootloader is locked or unlocked by enabling developer settings and then taping bootloader status
If it is unlocked it only means they flashed the Global ROM onto the Chinese phone which is fine.
Your warranty should be with gearbest either way so if there is a problem you deal with them and they deal with Xiaomi.
You're not likely to get a "shop ROM" anymore for phones that have a Global version officially.
My Mi 6 128 GB is the Chinese MTC1 variant but came with the global ROM and locked bootloader which I have since unlocked and flash AOSPA.
It was from an independent reseller in Russia. I'm assuming I have no warranty haha

But how can a Chinese Mi 6 that had the Global ROM installed remain bootloader locked? Isn't it required to unlock it in order to flash a different ROM than the one it came with?
And I know they say to check whether the MIUI version number in your phone's "about" matches an official one by Xiaomi, but isn't it possible that someone distributing a "fake ROM" also adjusted the version number being displayed?

Even if Xiaomi is mainly oriented toward the Chinese market, and Mi6 (all the versions) is a device for the Chinese market (no band 20...), Xiaomi is anyway opening towards other countries:
for example in 2017 Xiaomi stores opened in Spain, Xiaomi phones (MI6 included) are officially distributed by Amazon.es, and the same is planned for Italy in 2018.
Not sure, by they possibly officially sell their products also in India...
These phones are natively equipped with the Global MIUI, so no need to unlock any bootloader. I am not surprised that also Chinese shops are now shipping these products abroad.

The phone arrived pretty quickly (2 weeks). The seal of the box was missing, though, so it means the shop (most likely) did open it. I previously tried to get a Lenovo P2 from India (because in this case they actually had a version with more frequency support than that of the Chinese version), and the forwarding service I considered using told me they will have 5o

Just received option for aliexpress to ship now or wait for global rom and ship

I chose them to ship now rather than wait for them to flash the global rom for me. Hope it is not too hard to flash as I plan on rooting, unlocking boot etc. Any negatives?
It will likely arrived unlocked, if not, the unlock process has been sped up, it now takes less than 15 minutes. I just hope it gains traction with the modders quickly, the more units go international, the better for us.
Can't think of any negatives.
Wow - that was quick! I can't see it in stock anywhere, but I think I will wait for the all ceramic edition.
It was quick! Already have my DHL tracking number.
Some of the reviews so far made it seem like it already had a global rom.
You are right! That's why I just asked them to ship it. Maybe the store is so used to doing it that they thought this phone needed it as well
Looks like the ceramic unibody is not going to be available for some time so just ordered the 256GB instead. It doesn't look like there is a global ROM yet. I will want to flash the EU ROM but can't find TWRP anywhere yet.

Mine just shipped as well. Hope it does in fact have the global ROM on it. My Mix had the random restart problem. I have high hopes for the Mix 2. If they don't pan out I'm going to get the pixel 2 and sell the Mix 2.
Anybody have to upload there proof of payment and identification to be verified on Aliexpress?
Sent from my SM-T820 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I also ordered from Aliexpress (to the UK) and they asked me the same thing.
Anyway, I've asked them to clarify a few things but I think I'll just ask them to ship. By the time it arrives, I'm sure a global rom will be available that I can flash myself
One question for those who have had Xiaomi phones before. Is it possible to set the Chinese rom to English, so I can use the phone before the global rom is released? Presumably this won't have Google play but that's fine
Thanks

In this case I will ask them to ship early and I will set the language to English. I will side load apps until the global rom is available with Google play
You can also use an installation package to install Google play services onto Chinese ROM. My vendor has confirmed mine will arrive with Chinese ROM and Google Play installed.
It looks like the phones leave the factory with stock MIUI 9. The reseller is using google translate in their communications with me so I could be wrong, it seemed like they gave me the choice to have it shipped out with stock MIUI9 or to wait for the global version.

LOL, as if you even had to ask. Though I didn't luck out on DHL shipping, this reseller charged a hefty premium so I picked snail mail
Got my dhl tracking number too, apparently it will arrive in a few days?!
Great! Where did you purchase it from? I have my DHL tracking number but it's not working on the site yet.
So only the review units had the global ROM on them?!? Compared to what the first few hands on articles and youtube videos said that does not sound right.

Chinese phone to global rom?

Hello, I am sorry for the stupid question but really can find a definite answer to it. If I purchase a MAX 3 now from China, obviously with Chinese rom, will I be able to flush it with Global rom once they have global version of the phone and will the phone update with OTA from there on? I suppose there shouldnt be a problem if the Global version of the phone is identical to the Chinese version (the only kind available so far). But is this the case historically with Xiaomi's devices? Thanks for your advises.

If you are worried about customs. For instance if you live in the EU.
Then buy from a seller who puts a man-in-the-middle and ships first to a EU member country and then to your destination country and you will avoid both import fee and whatever percentage VAT your country use.
This is how we bought our Redmin note 4 Mido but it shipped from Italy instead of Great Britain as specified in the ad below.
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/pr...agon-636-Octa-Core-6/3010045_32897985587.html
Xiaomi are starting to be sold by local electronic store all around Europe so you and even I might not even need to buy mine from overseas.
But the chances are the VAT and all fees going to add up so it might not be worth it even so and will be cheaper to import anyway.
But hang on a minute. There is new articles published about the Mi Max 3 Pro yesterday.
If you want that one maybe hold on a few more weeks to see what happens.

Anyway it would be strange of them to announce one standard lower end model Mi Max 3 and then a few weeks later another more powerful choice of configuration.
They would probably had them showed off at the same keynote.

Yeah, it would have made more sense. The only thing I could have thought was that they wanted to sell more of the lower spec'd units first and maximise sales that way.
Either way, it's a shame

I'm planning on buying this phone but I'm unsure if I should buy now and flash later, or wait until the global rom arrives and buy it then. In either case, roughly how long does it usually take Xiaomi to release a global rom? Weeks? Months?

Usually its a couple of months or less in best case scenario.
And the source code is partially released after continuesly nagging and emailing from the xiaomi community. How long will that take? I dunno
Its probably the only bad thing. Because there will be some parts of the software that will need to be reverse engineered to get working in custom roms.
For instance the dual camera setup will probably cause some problems but hopefully they will be resolved or in worst case scenario the stock camera app and lib will be ported to aosp/lineage os.

I'd say that it'll take a minimum of 2-3 months for a global stable version, probably a few weeks earlier for a dev version. In your place, I would just wait until the global version releases and purchase it then.
But if you wanna buy it now, there has already been a multilanguage Xiaomi.eu version released.
So, is the official global rom currently listed on the Xiaomi Store on Aliexpress not the "official global rom"? I don't mind multilanguage etc, but am I missing out on some basic functionality? Like unfettered Google Play access etc?

I dunno Its a bit of a mixed bag.
Some customers who had theirs ship already told they received a phone with tampered chinese firmware with gapps installed but then no working OTA.
These units might be flashed with this tool to install gapps on-the-go on the chinese firmware.
http://en.miui.com/thread-3320023-1-1.html
Then the stores/sellers that has listed the unit as available but are not yet shipped if you already purchased when you look at the order details.
These sellers are waiting for the units to arrive that has global firmware out of the box. And this could take several weeks more before they ship.
There is a collection of firmware revisions on androidfilehost
https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=279184
If this is official I dunno:
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=5862345805528055811
I messaged a seller on Aliexpress but I seemed to received an automated non-related answer.
I recommend to wait and see what happens in the next few weeks if you really want to be sure that you buy the global mi max 3 version.

Cheers SU. I think the "on time" shipping of 60 days means that these listed as global roms are probably pre-sale units.
I also messaged seller and just got bot responses.
I'll wait. No rush.

Several buyers has received this message
"Dear friend
Good day!
Thank you for placing the order in our store!
We are contacting you regarding the stock of Max 3 128GB. Xiaomi manufacturer delayed the production.
We expect that the stock will arrive in 2 weeks. Could you please be patient and wait about 2 more weeks?
Don't worry! We are the Xiaomi's authorized agent.
The stock will arriver earlier than other sellers. We will give priority to your order once it arrives.
We will add a Mi Band 3 as compensation for the long wait.
We apologize for the inconvenience caused!
Looking forward to your response!
Kind Regards

Honestly, I have no idea since I normally order from Gearbest. However, these guys seem to be the best/biggest seller of Xiaomi products.
Geekbuying has it listed with Official Global ROM...
https://www.geekbuying.com/item/Xiaomi-Mi-Max-3-6-9-Inch-4GB-64GB-Smartphone-Black-400415.html
I ordered the 128GB from HK Goldway on AliExpress 12 days ago.
They initially said they could only send the Chinese ROM, which I said was fine.
When they didn't send it I asked why, they told me they need to install the global ROM. I told them not to open the box or install anything on it, just ship it as is. They agreed.
A few days later it's still not shipped. Now they are saying the 128 is a new phone and they need time to get it.
This is really frustrating but at least I'm not the only one waiting. Would be nice to get a free Mi Band though.

What I have is this
ROM version is MIUI Global 9.6 Stable 9.6.4.0 (OEDMIFD)
Baseband AT31-00672-0720_1012_ac92d76
kernel 4.4.78.perf-g92f5f3e
Android 8.0.1 OPM.171019.019
Sec. patch 2018-06-01
No Chinese apps ...Gplay looks just like usual
Where did you buy? Aliexpress? Which seller?
Tradingshenzhen is one of the most reliable sellers, a couple of days ago they started selling Max 3 with they global rom. This make me think that the official global rom has been launched.

too many basic issues with the device not sure if it is the rom or something in the communication hardware (could be some setting in service menu)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77234200&postcount=8
tempted to try the EU rom (or even the globe rom) but wanting the vendor to answer back on a return (Eternal Heaven on Aliexpress)
Only the 4GB is in stock. It should be about a week now for the 6GB.
I ordered from Aliexpress too and its been four days they haven't ship the device yet, I also used fast delivery DHL, I'll wait for 15 days otherwise I will ask refund.

Is there any way to Unlock the bootloader without xiaomi's unlocker

Hello,
i just got my max3 the other day and only now i begin to understand into what sort of spicy hell i've gotten myself into by buying a CN model. Unlike the fake "globals", mine was advertised as CN so it came with proper firmware and a locked bootloader. As much as i read around here in the past 3 hours, the best way to get near to proper global is to get EU rom, but for that i need TWRP and for that i need an unlocked bootloader.
The only way i found to unlock it is to use Xiaomi's official procedure, requesting permission and then waiting an undefined amount of time for it to pass through. Is it really the only way? Am i left at the mercy of our Chinese Overlords?
(I'm on 9.6.12.0 Stable if that changes anything. )

Unfortunately, yes, you have to play the waiting game. The CN version was the way to go for some when it was a 240 hour (10 day) wait time. Now that they've changed it to 720 hours (30 days), you're better off with global /eu rom versions because of the helpful guides and development of this forum.
it seems that i can't root with locked BL as well. guess i'm SOL.....
The saddest part is that i can't blame anyone but myself, so i can't even vent

u can see that it significantly slow down all custom roms development and forum activities

lol, happy to see someone like you will change to different branch soon. Xiaomi sell their phone at a cheap price, with the unlocking bootloader then install new rom for China version, their Global version cannot be sold with the amount as they want. I can understand their policy & method. "unnecessary long wait time"? If so, go directly to any Samsung or Apple store.
How do these unofficial resellers unlock the CN ROM phones and install a fake global ROM? This has been happening for ages.
I would rather wait for a reseller with a proper global ROM and a global version. I did that with my Mi Max 1, it took a bit of waiting compared to getting the Chinese release but it's meant less hassles.
Global version is out now anyhow so no need to wait. Mine came sealed in box with global writing on side and included a UK /Hong Kong 3 pin charger in the box.
Still waiting for 720 hrs though lol as want the EU rom on it. Global 9.6.6 is OK for now though.

Į envy the deal that you got. Ah well, live and learn.... Cn Edition never again.
I bought the Chinese 128gb version from Tradingshenzhen and got it pre-unlocked and pre-flashed with an old build of Xiaomi.eu.
All I had to do was to manually flash the latest Xiaomi.eu build via TWRP and all was good.
Not only did it work fine, it also saved me the long waiting time for the bootloader unlock.

Not sure what u're getting at, I bought it in official store locally with official price. The problem is stocks are somehow "leaked" to non-official dealer in much lower price. And u think this will actually make those non-official dealer wait!? LOL, all xiaomi's hurting are its true users.
I am new to all of this as well as new to the Mi Max 3. I purchased the global version of the phone. All I wanted to do was root the phone so I could get into the settings to change the volume values to increase volume. Pardon me for using the incorrect terminology but I hope you guys understand what I am getting at. I did this with my Samsung Galaxy Note and was able to really increase the speakerphone volume for phone calls.
With all of the above being said. I tried to unlock the boot loader and got the message saying that I needed to wait 360 hours. If I have a global phone do I still have to unlock the boot loader and wait the 15 days?
DO you guys have any suggestions for me to help me get into the volume codes in the phone in order to change them? That is my only goal because I need to amplify the speakerphone volume for phone calls as I only use the speakerphone given how big the phone is.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm trying to figure out how you only have 15 days wait. I just tried to unlock mine yesterday and i'm at 30 days wait. I dunno why they make us go through all of this but it's extremely lame.
I have just under 200 hours left.
If you have 720 hours, make sure you have an account that's been open for a while (I have an authorized account? Since I've had it for two years with my Mi5s Plus)
Make sure you disconnect devices that exist on the Mi Cloud account, bind the account to your Mi device ONLY, no other devices.
It will say 720 hours but give it a day and it should shoot down, if not, use a VPN to get into China, re-bind the account and wait a day (don't need the VPN active whilst waiting).
I don't know, it seemed to have shot down with me after it resetting to 720 hours, maybe the system picked up I have a 2 year account and reduced it?
Used miunlock took on Friday and gave me 208 hours (8 days) mi max 3 global version

7T vs Realme x2 Pro

Just noticed that this device will be available in Europe and the UK in November and am struggling to think of any reason to go for the 7T over this, other than OxygenOS,
This thing seems to have everything, including 64mp camera,20x zoom,50 watt charging,90hz display, dual speakers, the list goes on ,and it's much cheaper than the 7T,
Also Realme is under Oppo just like OnePlus
https://www.realme.com/eu/realme-x2-pro
Bumping, in case anyone has an opinion on this or has handled both these phones.
No one knows, until it's available. There's a dude on the X2Pro forum who's got it and sharing feedback on the phone. I too was debating whether to wait, but because of the recent 11.11 sales snagged a 7T for cheap. Loving it so far.
If you can wait, why not?

The different reviews I saw seem to say that the OP7T camera is a bit better.... But man, this 50W charging... And apparently lots of Realme phones get OOS custom ROMs... Imagine an X2 pro with OOS... I'm still waiting to receive my OP7T from China so the price is similar with an X2 Pro but if I had bought an OP7T at the official European price, I would send it back right away to get an X2 pro.
Just my 2 cents

I would agree, €600 in Europe and you only get the 8/128 model.Get it in China you can get it much cheaper or even the 8/256 model for around €500.
For me personally I just don't like the idea of them opening the device and flashing OOS on the China version. I like my phone to be new, untouched, factory sealed,(though with Oneplus pricing I am thinking I might have to get over that)
The Realme though is excellent value for €500 for 12/256 though your taking a hit in the camera processing and the software experience overall

Them? Who? You can buy X2Pro with Oxygen OS?
As far as I've read, like others have said, Color OS and the camera are the downsides of X2Pro. But once the Dev community gets going, we can always flash a custom rom so one issue is sorted. I'm not so sure about the camera.
And 7T may get a price cut once X2 Pro is available everywhere, who knows.

True ,but this is where my OCD and paranoia kicks in,who's to know how long that phone was used, did it drop, was it scratched, what kind of defects did it pick up.
But besides that, the prices are great so small price perhaps if the phone arrives safe

yeah it's a bit different for me since I bought it from a local seller who imported the phone sealed from China, then before he unbox and install ROM I received real time image of it still sealed with imei. So pretty much the phone was new out of box and it was like a friend helped me install the ROM, no worries.
So maybe try to do that to help with the OCD
I believe some Chinese online resellers accept not to open the sealed box if you ask for it.
Someone convince me to go for the 7T.
Where I stay, the X2 Pro is about $75 cheaper. But it was weird niggles like fingerprint not working after you unlock the bootloader and obviously the dev community is lacking.
My main concern about 7T is the battery life, especially with 90Hz. Someone tell me this isn't an issue. I certainly value dev/AOSP roms, though currently there's not much going on here except a couple of kernels (good ones though). I suppose this device needs more time for the ROMs scene to gather pace, hopefully..

The main reason there is not that much custom ROMs for now is that there is not working TWRP yet. There is still one on XDA, Omnirom, which seems to be pretty functional. Honestly battery life is perfect on this phone, and warp charge 30T makes you stop thinking about it IMHO.
I read somewhere that unlocking the bootloader on X2 Pro disables the under display FP scanner. I think that's a big deal if you're into flashing and stuff.
Such a turnoff for an otherwise amazing phone.
I suspect once more phones start shipping with Android 10 (maybe from Jan), TWRP will be fixed.
Pretty sure I'm going to pull the trigger in a few hours.
Someone tell me green/etc tint on the display isn't an issue [emoji14][emoji849]
Edit: And buy, i did.
