Chinese phone to global rom? - Xiaomi Mi Max 3 Questions & Answers

Hello, I am sorry for the stupid question but really can find a definite answer to it. If I purchase a MAX 3 now from China, obviously with Chinese rom, will I be able to flush it with Global rom once they have global version of the phone and will the phone update with OTA from there on? I suppose there shouldnt be a problem if the Global version of the phone is identical to the Chinese version (the only kind available so far). But is this the case historically with Xiaomi's devices? Thanks for your advises.

Hello, thanks for all replies. In aliexpress there are already listings for Global version. How could we verify these are real?

I think its a fake firmware as its not been officially released yet take it with a pinch of salt its so easy to flash official firmware on chinese when its released anyway.

We are still waiting for the TWRP for Mi Max 3!
Hopefully, it will be out soon somewhere!

I want one too but what's the likelyhood of customs charging you the 20% VAT (Plus the admin fee) on top of that?
I haven't had much experience ordering stuff like this from abroad so it will be good to know the odds!

If you are worried about customs. For instance if you live in the EU.
Then buy from a seller who puts a man-in-the-middle and ships first to a EU member country and then to your destination country and you will avoid both import fee and whatever percentage VAT your country use.
This is how we bought our Redmin note 4 Mido but it shipped from Italy instead of Great Britain as specified in the ad below.
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/pr...agon-636-Octa-Core-6/3010045_32897985587.html
Xiaomi are starting to be sold by local electronic store all around Europe so you and even I might not even need to buy mine from overseas.
But the chances are the VAT and all fees going to add up so it might not be worth it even so and will be cheaper to import anyway.
But hang on a minute. There is new articles published about the Mi Max 3 Pro yesterday.
If you want that one maybe hold on a few more weeks to see what happens.

Hi Could you please give more details on why you think a pro version would be out soon? Besides the appearance in Qualcomm's website are there other news on the matter?

Thats new and great information to be aware of!
You can read more about that here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-5-pro/how-to/faq-questions-answered-t3816185
To know if your device is affected type this is fastboot:
Code:
fastboot getvar anti
The displayed output : 3 shall mean you're fine while 4 shall mean you're in the Anti-Rollback squad.

3.Is the ROM global ROM? Does it have multi-language and Google Play?
It's Chinese version. We will flash global ROM. It has multi-language and Google Play after flashing. It can upgrade by OTA.
Does this sound legid to you? What kind of rom they would be flashing if there is no official Global version yet or so we think? This is the major Xiaomi aliexpress seller....

Looks like the Pro rumours have been squashed I was holding out to see if that version came to light. It's a massive shame.

Thats a bummer
Anyway it would be strange of them to announce one standard lower end model Mi Max 3 and then a few weeks later another more powerful choice of configuration.
They would probably had them showed off at the same keynote.

Yeah, it would have made more sense. The only thing I could have thought was that they wanted to sell more of the lower spec'd units first and maximise sales that way.
Either way, it's a shame

Is this one plus for real?!

Hey guys,
I'm about to buy a one plus 3 from a guy which is selling it extremely cheap and I would like to ask you guys, in what ways I could check if the device is real and not just a replica and also if It's not stolen. I will meet with the guy today so I would appreciate everything you tell me test on the device before making the purchase. I already asked him for the picture of the invoice.. now I'm waiting for his reply.
BTW this is the picture he sent me of the device:

I saw you comment and first off I'd like to say its already a chinese branded phone and very modest company, not your usual suspects for making "Phoney." (pun intended) Also I do not own the phone yet, but since you're cautious I'll still help you out.
When I buy phones from untrusted/unknown parties I always meet them in very open public places and look them in the eye when they're talking, looking for signs of anxiety or hesitation.
Now onto the phone itself:
pop the sim tray out make sure there are 2 slots (real oneplus 3 has 2 slots). okay
Go to settings> about phone check the imei with this: https://swappa.com/esn (its free and trusted site)
pop one of my sim cards in and make a phone call. go back to settings> about phone and check the baseband, model number, build number etc. and make sure they are correct/up to date.
go to the camera (usually the stock app) and I test photos and videos.
turn on bluetooth and make sure it searches for my headset which i have on at the time.
Open a web browser and see how fast the app opens and open multiple tabs and different websites in each.
For a phone like this I would feel the quality of the build because most knock-offs just don't feel like "real"
and LAST but not LEAST go to settings> security and check the fingerprint sensor, (how fast it esponds, if it responds at all, nothing is for sure but chances are very slim that a knock-off company is putting a high quality fingerprint system in a knock-off phone. I do all of this while talking to him/her about how the yankees are really sucking this year, and telling them my fantasy football team is better than theirs by a long shot.
I sure hope this helps :fingers-crossed:
Check the Android version. If it says Nougat, then it is obviously a fake one.
Thank you! Isn't there an app that can check if the phone is real? Like all the internals and camera module? I heard there's one with the name similar to AIDA..
Also, could anyone post the latest settings page where I can see the latest build/baseband and so on, please?
Thank you all

You could easily get 300 euro for OP3 so for me the real question is (and it should be your question as well) Why would the seller throw away 150 euro? Why would anybody do that? Nobody would unless something is wrong.

Looks real. Exactly like mine did whwn I got it. But what's to say that's what you will receive. Especially at half price.
Buy using a reputed site and pay using a known payment method.
That way if you do get cheated will have some way to get your money back.

If you can get internet... Download the Geekbench 3 from playstore and run a test and you should get around 2250+ singlecore score and 5400+ multicore score (If you can only download geekbench 4 then score is around 1700 for single and 4000 multicore)

Tests, Benchmarks and Information that may be of use
http://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/1285448
http://browser.geekbench.com/v4/compute/294146
So Far so Good Performance is good Net Speeds very good and doing as it should no surprises, not loaded with the usual Crud that appears, good clean rom
Tronsmart Vega S96 at present does not have root,
Upper and lower task bars that come and go as the user requires.
As Noticed, RTC battery to keep things on time nice touch,
Unsure about the Tin lids over Ram and CPU will investigate further, but so far so good.
Temp wise is pretty much on par with other units of late, Ram speed to to bad under test given.
Netflix looking ok for what we have here and Plex doing well.
We Know the plight of Kodi and the Pro's and con's FTMC the way to go.
Yep not bad Value at all working well indeed,
That was just the First release things may improve..
Actually, I was expecting better performance for this newest chipset. The overall Aututu score is only slightly higher than S905. Wonder about this tin lid (on top of the CPU and RAM) provides adequate cooling? Maybe the Aututu score would improve with better cooling.
Not sure if there will be any OTA firmware update for this box. In Tronsmart forum, there is no dedicated section for S96. Also, this S96 is not even listed in Tronsmart site. This does not look promising at all.
Update (10-Jan-2017): I stand corrected. My friend, who owns a S96, told me that he just updated its firmware via OTA. Firmware date is Jan-05-2017. Before the update, his Aututu overall score was 42157 but it after the update, it was reduced a bit to 41544.

Probably no but I personally would not do this because of the fear of bricking the box.
I used to own a Tronsmart S95 with bug-ridden firmware. Someone in Tronsmart forum did try and succeeded to install a Minix firmware. Later on, Minix did something in their firmware that disallowed installation in non-Minix boxes.
Did you experience any issues with your S96?
Yes, bluetooth problems - it doesn't turn on. Today I had to send the box back to the store for them to check it, because I am out of options in terms of how to make it work. Otherwise it is my first android tv box, but I wouldn't buy from tronsmart anymore.

It is not working for anybody. There is something wrong with the server or with the OTA itself.
So, the problem must be the firmware then. Wonder if Tronsmart even bothered to test the OTA before releasing the firmware.
Problem is there is absolutely no support from Tronsmart at all.

Hmm ok what about anther rom ?
Hello all,
Thanks for the detailed review! Considering getting this box to replace my old Tronsmart NX. Good price on GeekBuying compared to Amazon ($99). Also I saw a firmware update was released on a few days ago (20170120). Seem there are three ways to install the update:
-Via OTA
-Via SD card
-Via PC using male-to-male USB
http://blog.geekbuying.com/index.ph...6-0-amlogic-s912-4k-tv-box-firmware-20170120/
EDIT
Just read on the Tronsmart forum users having issues with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but seems to be before the January 11 firmware update.
http://forum.tronsmart.com/forum/vega-s95/2840-tronsmart-vega-s96#.WIgIvtRsO7Q
My friend has S96 and the latest firmware is dated Jan-11, not Jan-20.
As for the purchase, I would advice against Geekbuying. On top of the long shipping time, return is close to impossible. Even for a defective unit, they would want you to pay for shipping and insist on a tracking number. Shipping the product back will cost you $30-40 and will take weeks to get a new one.
I myself would buy from Amazon for quick shipping and peace of mind.
Good to know regarding the firmware..
Thanks for the advise. I have dealt with their RMA's twice. 1st time 3 years ago. At work they purchased some Tronsmart TV Box that went bad after 6 months, what a pain getting the RMA and personally a 2nd time with dash cam about a year ago that went bad after a week. I was sofa king mad especially when the post office wanted about $60 for shipping and tracking which I passed on the tracking. I had to pull teeth for the RMA but wasn't as bad as the 1st time. Personally I have purchased three items from them and one was defective. Shipping is about 4 weeks but yes I am leery of buying from them. Not sure if AliExpress is any better but Amazon is way safer for the extra money.

Oneplus 5t lava red

Hey guys, i know the lava red edition is only available in china soon.
Do you think there is any chance we can get this edition in europe?
I thought, maybe ordering it through vpn??
Also im interested when this edition will be released.
Any help would be appreciated
I'm sure you'd be able to see the red OnePlus with a vpn but I don't think you'll be able to ship it out to where you actually are. I could be wrong though
Living in China, I ordered mine this sunday.
Do you think it's exactly the same build than the normal 5t?
I mean, can I install the O2 OS of the normal 5t version in it?

Two years ago, I did buy a Mate 8 in China. But Huawei Switzerland told me, they can not offer waranty for this device, because I did buy it in China and not in Switzerland. Therefore it would be interessting to know how Oneplus is handling waranty with devices which are bought outside of your home country.

When i order oneplus devices from amazon or somewhere else, do i have 2 years warranty although i didnt order it from the official oneplus site?
i just got my 5T lava red yesterday, i bought it from reseller in my country. now it's already rooted and customized. every custom rom is working fine, i think the only difference is just the color and factory rom u got. i personally think this color is totally gorgeous. maybe the best smartphone color i've ever seen!!! well, i just hope the next oneplus lava red would have grey/titanium accent button
I got my lava red op5t today and I'm in the u.s using it on TMobile and everything is working smooth, I don't even wanna use my note 8 no more lol

I ordered a Mi 6 from GearBest, should I replace the ROM when it arrives?

Hello. I have already placed the order a few days ago. My brother sent me some coupon for a 128gb ceramic version and I didn't understand how they sell it so considerably cheaper than on other websites, but now I realize it is probably because the units they use are the China version with the ROM replaced by the store. They call it "international version" rather than "global version" to be confusing.
Their selection of different versions available for purchase was also confusing, but now I realize the one option they named "GLOBAL VERSION 6GB RAM 64GB ROM" which is considerably more expensive is the only official global version (it is even more expensive than the 128gb Mi 6 available in my country's local shops, which is weird because the shops here sell official global models).
Anyway, to my understanding hardware-wise the China and the official global models of the Mi 6 are identical (they support the same frequency bands). My order will probably come with China charger and an adapter, though. But with regards to the ROM, to my understanding these resellers put what you people call a "shop ROM", which is not an exact version of the official global ROM? What's the difference? I'm afraid they might be adding "unwanted software" when they're modifying the ROM, so I want to know whether I can (and should) wipe their shop ROM and install the official Xiaomi one.
Thanks in advance.
Flashing a global rom doesn't take much don't be worried
But you need to spend 3 days at least with the current rom as you have to wait for xiaomi to let you unlock the bootloader
So get it request unlocking your device and connect your device to your mi account
Then just wait for 3 days and flash the new rom

Hello, thanks for the reply.
I've read some earlier posts of people trying to flash official global ROMs on their store-ROM Chinese Xiaomis and getting a brick. Apparently there's a certain way to get it done as some said it worked in the end.
But, I didn't understand whether OTA works afterwards or you need to manually install the new ROM whenever an update is available? Is there also any security concerns when using a phone with store ROM flashed by GearBest?
I don't have knowledge about "store rom"
But i believe the hardware is the same
I don't think you end up with a brick
Always stick with official global rom if you are concerned about security stff
Anyways the OTA won't be too much necessary for me at least because i wanted that google camera app so much so i rooted it eventually and also there forum is a nice place they post the updates and its eazy to download and install

Rooting disables OTA? I'm not really familiar with Android modding.
Let's see if anyone here is familiar with the specific situation I'm asking about.
I ordered a MI6 couple months ago and it came with the Global Stable and with the bootloader unlocked. Everything works as it should since then. I even flashed a TWRP and I currently use a custom ROM
Also, since I have a partnership with the GearBest, they stopped flashing their phones with fake ROMs and they only flash Global ROMs if they are available.
As you, I got the ceramic version from Gearbest through a temporary special offer, at a very convenient price, much lower than the standard version.
It arrived in Dec. (ca. 1 month for delivery to Italy) with the official global stable, and was perfectly usable just out of the box.
From that, moving to the global developer was almost immediate, without unlocking the bootloader.
I am now using a custom rom, mainly because they claim the GPS settings are better optimized for western countries and because I hope a (more) usable porting of the google camera will be soon or later available.

So how can I verify whether the version installed is the official global ROM instead of a "fake ROM"? Why were GearBest even using fake ROMs?
And I understand the bootloader must come already unlocked by the store?
Regarding the price: I paid for the ceramic 128gb $389. For the "global 64gb" version, GearBest ask for $506. I can find in local stores a 128gb Mi 6 for about $500 (and less than $450 in a city except from VAT); I don't know whether it is ceramic or glass, but I assume the stores here sell the official global model, so it's quite weird GearBest ask for more money for a 64gb version than what the 128gb version goes for locally.
(btw, is there any glass screen protector you recommend? I can't find anything that's certainly good. I can see almost all options don't completely cover the front, but I'll be using a case as well.)

The MIUI version is indicated in the settings. A google search can confirm if it is an original Xiaomi rom or not. Anyway I got almost immediately the OTA update to the latest global. Possibly they developed these "fake roms" to sell xiaomi phones outside China when no official translations of miui were available

Yes, it's weird. maybe the ceramic version is not so popular? It is a nice object, but damn slippery and heavy. I also paid it around 350 euros, that was less than the standard 128, but more than the 64.

Yeah, I heard some reviews of Xiaomi phones referring to how they used to have bad English translations. Perhaps they were talking about the phones that came with "fake ROMs".

I'm not sure whether the local stores sell the ceramic version. I'm referring to how the local stores should usually sell the official global version and yet the 128gb offered here is cheaper than the global 64gb offered on GearBest.
I ended up ordering the "original Xiaomi silicone soft case" and some screen protector called "Asling" from GB. Used some of the GB points gained from the Mi 6 purchase to get a few dollars off, though it seems to limit how big of a discount you may claim in regards to the size of the purchase, so it didn't allow me to use all of the points.

Sure. if the phone was released with the global miui directly by xiaomi the bootloader is locked and the only rom you can install without unlocking is the global developer (look at the miui site).
For using any other rom you have to unlock the bootloader, flash recovery, flash rom, ...etc. There are a number of detailed guides around.
If the phone comes with a shop rom, or the global miui was installed by the shop, it could happen that the bootloader is already unlocked, but I think that this case now is almost improbable.

But if the phone I will be getting, and most likely the one you have ordered from GearBest as well, is the China model, why would it come directly from Xiaomi's factory with the Global ROM? The main reasoning behind the lower price for these China units when their frequency support is actually the same is that they're only ment for the Chinese market when they leave the factory with the Chinese ROM. The other differences is the Chinese type plug on the charger and the Chinese writing on the back of the phone (does yours have it?), but combining these with Global ROM on Xiaomi's behalf seems strange...
MAYBE they make these for foreigners living in China (though I don't think installing the phone with Google services when it's intended for local usage is allowed in China), but perhaps there's simply a way to relock to bootloader and that is what GearBest is doing?

Looks fine to me.
Is there an update available bringing you to MIUI 9?
You can also check if the bootloader is locked or unlocked by enabling developer settings and then taping bootloader status
If it is unlocked it only means they flashed the Global ROM onto the Chinese phone which is fine.
Your warranty should be with gearbest either way so if there is a problem you deal with them and they deal with Xiaomi.
You're not likely to get a "shop ROM" anymore for phones that have a Global version officially.
My Mi 6 128 GB is the Chinese MTC1 variant but came with the global ROM and locked bootloader which I have since unlocked and flash AOSPA.
It was from an independent reseller in Russia. I'm assuming I have no warranty haha

But how can a Chinese Mi 6 that had the Global ROM installed remain bootloader locked? Isn't it required to unlock it in order to flash a different ROM than the one it came with?
And I know they say to check whether the MIUI version number in your phone's "about" matches an official one by Xiaomi, but isn't it possible that someone distributing a "fake ROM" also adjusted the version number being displayed?

Even if Xiaomi is mainly oriented toward the Chinese market, and Mi6 (all the versions) is a device for the Chinese market (no band 20...), Xiaomi is anyway opening towards other countries:
for example in 2017 Xiaomi stores opened in Spain, Xiaomi phones (MI6 included) are officially distributed by Amazon.es, and the same is planned for Italy in 2018.
Not sure, by they possibly officially sell their products also in India...
These phones are natively equipped with the Global MIUI, so no need to unlock any bootloader. I am not surprised that also Chinese shops are now shipping these products abroad.

The phone arrived pretty quickly (2 weeks). The seal of the box was missing, though, so it means the shop (most likely) did open it. I previously tried to get a Lenovo P2 from India (because in this case they actually had a version with more frequency support than that of the Chinese version), and the forwarding service I considered using told me they will have 5o

Estimates on how long until the global ROM arrives?

I'm planning on buying this phone but I'm unsure if I should buy now and flash later, or wait until the global rom arrives and buy it then. In either case, roughly how long does it usually take Xiaomi to release a global rom? Weeks? Months?

Usually its a couple of months or less in best case scenario.
And the source code is partially released after continuesly nagging and emailing from the xiaomi community. How long will that take? I dunno
Its probably the only bad thing. Because there will be some parts of the software that will need to be reverse engineered to get working in custom roms.
For instance the dual camera setup will probably cause some problems but hopefully they will be resolved or in worst case scenario the stock camera app and lib will be ported to aosp/lineage os.

I'd say that it'll take a minimum of 2-3 months for a global stable version, probably a few weeks earlier for a dev version. In your place, I would just wait until the global version releases and purchase it then.
But if you wanna buy it now, there has already been a multilanguage Xiaomi.eu version released.
So, is the official global rom currently listed on the Xiaomi Store on Aliexpress not the "official global rom"? I don't mind multilanguage etc, but am I missing out on some basic functionality? Like unfettered Google Play access etc?

I dunno Its a bit of a mixed bag.
Some customers who had theirs ship already told they received a phone with tampered chinese firmware with gapps installed but then no working OTA.
These units might be flashed with this tool to install gapps on-the-go on the chinese firmware.
http://en.miui.com/thread-3320023-1-1.html
Then the stores/sellers that has listed the unit as available but are not yet shipped if you already purchased when you look at the order details.
These sellers are waiting for the units to arrive that has global firmware out of the box. And this could take several weeks more before they ship.
There is a collection of firmware revisions on androidfilehost
https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=279184
If this is official I dunno:

Honestly, I have no idea since I normally order from Gearbest. However, these guys seem to be the best/biggest seller of Xiaomi products.
Geekbuying has it listed with Official Global ROM...

I ordered the 128GB from HK Goldway on AliExpress 12 days ago.
They initially said they could only send the Chinese ROM, which I said was fine.
When they didn't send it I asked why, they told me they need to install the global ROM. I told them not to open the box or install anything on it, just ship it as is. They agreed.
A few days later it's still not shipped. Now they are saying the 128 is a new phone and they need time to get it.
This is really frustrating but at least I'm not the only one waiting. Would be nice to get a free Mi Band though.
