Black USB-C Audio Adapter - Google Pixel 2 Accessories

My phone is black, my headphones' cord is black, but the adapter is OEM adapter is white. Has anyone found a black colored USB to 3.5mm audio jack adapter that is compatible with the Google Pixel 2? All of the ones I find online are analog adapters that don't have a built it DAC.
I know the Essential phone store sells one that is compatible, but it costs more than the original.

Not helping actually, but I do hate Google for doing that. Charger in white is not that big of an issue, though it could've been black as well. But the white headphone adapter is actually quite annoying

That's a good point too. The charging cable is also white. They need to stop copying Apple and make the accessories match the color of the device.

The HTC adapter that came with my wife's black U11 is a very dark grey - and it sounds better than the Google one. I'm not as annoyed by the grey than I am by the white.

Since you're in the US, have a look here: https://www.htc.com/us/accessories-b/#!pid=htc-u11
For $11.99, that's not bad. The same adapter costs $39.99 here in Australia. Absolutely crazy.

Months later and there are a few more dongles available, but they're all more expensive than the white ones that Google provides. Looks like HTC is still the cheapest alternative. Essential, Razer, and Sony all come with extra $$$

Why the hell are these dongles get really expensive

Because they have a DAC inside of them. That's why the cheap ones on eBay won't work. No DAC

I read some post on reddit stating that the Razer dongle is better than the one that comes with the pixel2. I think the Google white one is 16bit audio and the Razer one was 24bit. Worth looking in to spending a few more dollarooz on a better dongle imo.

Usb to 3.5mm jack

anyone use this on artemis ?
Work this on mda compact 3 (artemis) ?
http://www.semsons.com/2miusband3st.html
haven't used it, but have used several adaptors with 2 or 3 connectors from the main mini usb - reckon it should be fine
I have one of the 3 port units on a short lead. It does the same job as your adapter and works fine. Your unit is more compact as it doesn't use a lead like mine.
I got two adapters from ebay, one with a built-in microphone and one without, both mini-USB to 3.5mm jack. But on both the sound quality was really bad. The sound was phased or flanged. Using the original headphones not. How can that be? Does anyone know of a small adapter, with or without microphone, that gives good quality? At best one available in Germany and, of course, not too expensive.
I have a mini-usb to 3,5 mm and to mini-usb female cable. this adapter is very useful because at the same time it's possible to hear music and to charge battery. With 3,5 mm plug i can connect any earphone, and when I use a good one like sennheiser the audio quality is excellent.
ok luigug, thanks for that. is it small? i would like to have one permanently in my pocket. would you mind telling me where you got it, possibly with a link?
The adapter is small enough. I have bought it on eBay, the link is this
http://cgi.ebay.it/AAJ-ADATTATORE-S...39:1|66:2|65:12|240:1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
Looks cute. Price is alright too. Unfortunately they send only within Italy. I live in Germany.
I think that you can find a similar product also from other international ebay sellers. It is sufficient to check that characteristics are the same of my adapter.

What 3.5mm to RCA cable?

Not sure if they all work. Anyone got any recommendations of what I should (or shouldn't) use? Looking at amazon (I'm a prime member, free 2-day shipping). This is the one I'm look to use.
that one is only for sound. thats a 3.5mm to rca(red and white). you want a 3.5mm to rca(yellow red and white.). so you can use it for video out.
HERE'S the one i just ordered. its gonna arrive for me tomorrow, i can let you know how it works.
I got one on eBay for $2.50. I'll post my findings as well once I get the cable.
Awesome, thanks. Just bought the same one. Now I just got to find a half decent media player to go with it.
no problem. it was the same one they used in a review of the captivates video out which seemed to work really well. have you tried rockplayer for movies? i've found the captivates default video player works pretty good. and the music players pretty nice too.

I saw those, but between the fact that they aren't out yet, $4 for the RCA cable is fine for a holdover, and I don't think we know what those cables will transmit. I know there are restrictions on what the other HDMI equipped phones can play through to the TV.

I also saw something very similar in WalMart the other day for $19 - it came in several colors and the speaker cover was nicer. I lay the phone in landscape and plug the attached cord into the headphone jack. I use it as an alarm clock stand. My budget could not handle the Google Dock.

You have a point.
There is a workaround.
For example, with my S3 I have a slim case.
I bought an Ibolt car dock and a KiDiGi desktop....both with provisions to accommodate with/without a slim case specifically made for an S3.
YET...still, the fit was loose on the desktop and though tight on the Car dock, the grooves were too deep allowing too much screen to be obscured.
THE WORKAROUND...I sliced up some black super high density foam and created a BED inside the grooves of the docking stations so that it would be a much tighter and safer fit. Works perfect and hardly visible. (black on black) I simply glued the foam to the docks.
In my head, my imagination and I have designed docking stations with an adjustable base/sides that you SCREW SET into place according to the case that you are using for your S3. Is this such a hard thing to implement? Doubt it. Some of the Proclip car docks have a hint of this type of adjustability.
The price of this is way out of what it should be it's nothing new or special it's just eh dock with extended features I know its Samsung so you pay a premium price and it would match your device color but you would really have to want it to be a Samsung one at that price.
I mean conversion wise Euros are pretty much a straight conversion to GBP so let square it £90 for a dock that has OTG support and MHL that's just crazy.
Here is a link for all those interested: http://www.samsung.com/de/consumer/...nes/EDD-S20EWEGSTD?subsubtype=docking-station
Careful, your post makes it seem like the US item is equivalent to the German item you also show. But the US dock is the regular one without HDMI and USB Host access.
Generally - it seems that most companies match the foreign purchase price in euros - to dollars when it eventually arrives in the US. In other words, when it gets released on the US website - I'd expect it to be around $80. I could be wrong, but I'm waiting to see if it arrives soon.

sir, you are confused.
the "american link" is NOT the same device at all. it does not have OTG, nor does it have HDMI
your american link: charges, syncs, 3.5mm audio
the german link: charges, may sync, 3.5mm audio, HDMI out, USB host (for keyboards mouse, etc.)
HUGE difference.

Yeah...I just saw this dock the other day. It just hit the internet. Thanks for also showing the American link version. Black too. $50usd is not that bad really. Considering the wiring and outputs, it's priced ok in N.A. It is a generic solution...but I would simply compliment it with my foam trick from my previous post. You know, with the foam, you end up with a darn tight fit and a soft landing pad as a bonus.
UPDATE: oh...scarrmrcc and P0ll0L0c0 point out that it's not the same unit. Too bad. Don't feel bad. We all make mistakes.
You should edit your post accordingly.

so, it is moving slowly in the direction of the US
in Germany, it costs €80....
http://www.samsung.com/de/consumer/...nes/EDD-S20EWEGSTD?subsubtype=docking-station
I want to have this but ain't willing to pay such price...€30 to €40 cheaper should be ok...but the proud €80 is outrageous!!
I hope I can find similar cheaper products (copies) in amazon or ebay very soon.

samsung uses the term multimedia pretty darn loosely...
the US link gives 2 media: usb storage (as in it allows you to access the phone's memory) and audio. so tecnically, it is multimedia.. but I feel that is cheating.
the german one at the beginning of the thread, has one major difference in nomenclature: it is a docking station (unlike the the other, which is just a dock). as a docking station is it gives USB (storage. and access), HTMI out, OTG, audio.. the whole thing. (and uses the "smart mote" triggered by a 40.2kOHM resistor).
they deliberately make people think the items are more than they are...
Finally! Has anyone found a blue version available for pre-order?
HELP!!! Can the multimedia dock be compatible with other android+mhl+otg phones?
Hi, Can someone please tell me if the multimedia dock can be used with other android phones with MHL and OTG capability? For example the Zte V985 has a micro usb port and supports full MHL + OTG and is also android 4.0.4 so theoretically it should also work with the samsung multimedia dock?

Pixel 2 Does Not Allow 3rd Party Headphone Adapters

Info from Ohgami_Ichiro on compatible Pixel 2 headphone adapters:
There's more options now it appears.
BASEVS $17.90 https://www.amazon.com/Basevs-Earpho...dp/B077GT9MTD/
CONMDEX $17.90 https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-CONMD...dp/B077GS8G3N/

AirsFish $17.90 https://www.amazon.com/Upgrade-AirsF...dp/B077GVVLQZ/
These 4 appear to be the same with different brand names on them and they use a Realtek Chip compared to the Geekria one that uses a Conexant one. I don't know what the Google one uses though. Slight update it looks like the Razor one will be compatible so there's that plus the ones for the HTC U11 are as well although there is debate as to whether the one for the U11 and the U11 Ultra are the same with a new case design or us a different chip. But either way the HTC ones have a DAC in the adaptor so that makes it compatible.
So far the current list is:
Google OEM
Essential Phone PH-1 adaptor
Razor Phone Adaptor
HTC U11 https://www.htc.com/us/accessories-b...-3-5mm-htc-u11
HTC U11 Ultra Adaptor https://www.htc.com/us/accessories-b...mm-htc-u-ultra
Geekria https://www.amazon.com/Geekria-Headp...dp/B073Z47PSK/
I bought some $0.89 USB-C to 3.5mm adapters off of AliExpress, because they're dirt cheap and I know for a fact I will lose the one that comes with my phone. After receiving my Pixel 2 yesterday and plugging one into the phone, it says "Analog audio accessory detected - The attached device is not compatible with this phone. Tap to learn more."
I'm a little peeved that they decided to take the headphone jack out, make you use an adapter, and even more specifically make you use their adapter. I switched away from iOS specifically these kinds of reasons..
I assume the only way to remove this restriction would be via root?
Pixel 2 and 2 XL requires a digital adapter, which means it needs a chip inside. The one on the google play store is only $9, is a digital adapter, and also contains a DAC. There is no restriction that you can't use a 3rd party adapter, you just need to use a digital adapter.
USB c allows analog and digital audio, the pixel only does digital, your adapter is only analog (which is why it's so cheap).
https://www.androidauthority.com/3-5mm-audio-usb-type-c-701507/
This is very interesting! As is known, Google is focusing hardcore on USB C compliance. I was under the impression that since the pixel 2 does not do analog audio, it broke the spec, and was a bit confused why.
As per the error message you are receiving, it is clear the USB C port is reading the SBU pin's correctly, there is just no DAC connected on the other end. So i guess technically this is compliant...

Lack of analog does not break the spec, AFAIK. The spec allows, but does not require, analog pass-through.
I wish they did allow it, so we could buy cheaper adapters. However, that would require another DAC and amplifier in the phone.
Google made the right choice
Google made the right choice here. As not all USB C devices do not do analog out it is better to only do digital out. This is so you can use your USB accessories with other devices. Not allowing it is actually more complaint in google's mind then doing analog and digital out.
I tested the adapter that came with my Essential phone in the Pixel 2 and it worked fine. It has a dac inside it as well

I tried some el cheapos that also didn't work on my Essential phone, so I went ahead and ordered 2 more from google since they dropped the price to $9 a few weeks ago. Mind as well roll that into price of the phone if you insist on wired like I do. Sucky thing is they're not slated for delivery until Nov 17 – 18.
My advice would be if you need another adapter to buy the official Google one and not a 89 cent China eBay special. You must remember that embedded DAC is solely responsible for making sure your audio doesn't sound like ****. Don't cheap out and get a quality converter

Agreed the price sucks. But I'm cautiously optimistic that Google will drop that like they did for the regular adapter right before launch. (fingers crossed)
As per usual, Google pulled a Nintendo and did not make enough of one of the most sought after accessories for their flagship phone. The adapters are out of stock and any orders placed for them while they where in stock don't even ship until mid November. Lame.
Does anyone know if the Razer Phone's adapter will work on our Pixel 2? Would be interesting to try that THX certification out if Razer were to sell this separately from their phones.
Nothing looks simple, but i have found some things like this
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65201371&postcount=48
I'm using a Dragonfly Red with my Pixel 2 (via an Anker USB-C to A converter) without issue, aside from the known low volume problem with the Red (which isn't as much of an issue for me as I mostly use sensitive headphones.)
I can't personally vouch for this because I haven't got it yet... but this adapter appears to have a dac.
Its pricey, but there if you need one before Google can get them back in stock.

This one is good. It was referenced in the 2XL forum. A user there did testing of audio quality and his result was it was just a little bit less than the Google supplied one.
Post for reference: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=74352935&postcount=26
I have scoured Amazon and really at this time The google one and the Geekria one are the only one at this time. As more and more companies release phones without 3.5mm there should be more options. One other option I brought up was also that the iPhone adapters also have DACs in them so there is the option to get one and get a Lighting to C adapter.
