Convert one variant of MZ²P to another? - Moto Z2 Play Questions & Answers

I bought the wrong version of the Moto Z² Play (XT1710-09). So I'm unable to get LTE here in the United States.
Is this a software issue (modem firmware) that I could possibly flash in the future?
I recall with the old Moto X2, you could convert it into a Pure edition (XT1095).
Thanks

I can't imagine that this would be possible. I am fairly certain that -09 is the Brazilian dual SIM model.
In the USA, the US Unlocked version is -01 and the Verizon version is -02.
How did you get a Brazil phone in the States?
I would try to return or exchange it.
If that's not possible, you could sell it online and hopefully only lose a bit of money.

I thought it was Pakistani, as the update Channel is RETAPAC (just noticed there's no C in Pakistani), guess it's Retail Pacific.
I looked at the 01/02, but they had less ram and storage 3/32 compared to 4/64 for 09.
Can't send it back I've already rooted it.
And times up, I also dinged the outside corner (these phones are slippery)
I didn't know. I figured with all the listed LTE Bands, and the duel Sim, that I would rule the world!
Then I was waiting on AT&T to send me a sim card, they sent me a bad one, so by the time I found out that only a giant "H" would show were "LTE" should be its was too late.
I'm hoping once the custom firmwares gain momentum, that I'll be able to flash it into strawberry sherbert!
I do love this phone, I've already bought a couple of Moto Mods for it. I'm on my 3rd case. This is my first new phone since I bought a Moto X², 4-5 years ago.

The Verizon version XT1710-01 has 3/32.

Tell me how and from which phone and when I get home from work, I'll give it a try.
I know how to make a Nandroid of EFS, but not modem.
ETA: I just read that an EFS Nandroid contains my IMEI and other sensitive info, so I'm not comfortable sharing that.

Depending on which version of TWRP, should be one of the backup options. But perhaps we should consult someone who knows this area a bit better. Because your EFS folder has YOUR IME information, and I could end up with a vurtual clone of YOUR phone. And I'd not be happy getting numerous calls from all your lady friends. Lol.

In reading about this, I ran across the modem flash process and recall doing it, in the past.
In fastboot, with the desired firmware, the US variant, in your case,
reflash (or whatever the proper term is) the modems, with the following fastboot commands:
fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
fastboot erase modemst1*
fastboot erase modemst2*
fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
fastboot reboot
Or, why not just flash the entire US firmware?
I don't know what to do about the EFS.

Those commands are part of flashing firmware, I just used them to return my old phone to Stock.
if I had the US firmware, I'd definitely give it a try. But the sources have dried up.
Do YOU think it'll work?

No more OTA's after flashing "full stock"

Some time ago I've run into the problem with phone stuck at the bootloader. I was adviced to flash this: ADDISON_NPNS26.118-22-1_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC which indeed solved the problem with booting, but it brings another problem: no OTA's since then. When checking for updates it always says "Your device is up to date". How to get updates again?

I think it's not bootloader related but to the software channel and the latest ota released for your device's software channel, for example I have an attmx software channel device and the latest OTA available it's the September one, which means that if I flash the October OTA or October stock ROM I will never get the November OTA because my device still attmx channel and the latest OTA available it's from September

and thank to you, looks like you answered my question regarding the (bugged?) bootloader stuck in TWRP I asked here
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=75298127&postcount=465
as far as I understand RETEU has yet to receive updates and is sitting still at NPNS26.118-22-1
but I don't understand the real difference between the carrier RETEU and RETUS,
I mean: I can read the parameter in fastboot:
(bootloader) ro.carrier: reteu
is this parameter rewritable by flashing a new firmware ?
is it safe to flash a generic motorola firmware with no mention if RETEU or RETUS like the one you did ?
is there any difference e.g. in radio or modem, or is it only a different OTA channel ?

I hope someone will answer these questions - I and others would love to know! (my added numbering, spacing, and bolding)
EDIT If all XT1635-02 's are the same, then the builtin radios would be the same . Are there different radio softwares in these firmwares? or is this only for the carriers to know which radios they have?
can't tell by comparing in module since firmwares have been much updated:
Code:
ret en us
MBM Version: C1.13
Modem Version: M8953_10229.50.04.65R
- - - -
reteu
MBM Version: C0.14
Modem Version: M8953_10203.02.04.42R
So would have to actually try it...
Since no one is going to give me an all expenses paid trip to and around Europe , someone there will have to flash these on their phone and report results. Probably already been done.
Started a new thread so hopefully folks will add their experiences.

Radios aren't the same.
There are a lot of useful infos in these forums, but nicely spread out in hundreds of threads LOL, I found this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72198869&postcount=11
You don't need to ask the same question on every thread.
There is no difference between RETIN, RETAIL, and RETASIA firmware. Those are retail software channels, meaning that any updates (OS and security patches) come directly from Motorola rather than a mobile carrier.
If the bootloader on your phone is unlocked, you can install this firmware on your phone, regardless of the software channel your phone is set to. The software channel can't be changed.

actually according to gsmarena the radios aren't the same:
https://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_moto_z_play-8310.php
US has 2 LTE bands more than EU, but maybe the real difference is in actual hardware and not in firmware.
So at the moment the answers to the above questions could be:
1) no (burned in ?)
2) yes
3) different radios, same firmware, different OTA channel

I think all xt1635-02 mobos start out the same but minor mods (traces cut, etc) are made for each radio for each channel at factory - so you can't turn an CN "into" a US... or not fully. But not sure of this.
1) Yes, I would guess like the IMEI
2) I would guess yes but I can't test.
3) This is where folks would have to test using their own phones. - take a reteu or retcn phone and flash retus and still have it work in their own location, or whatever location they wish. It's beginning to seem as though no damage to the phone can occur as long as you are able to RSDlite something to it. Things get different with retin phones with dual SIMs - going to and coming from. Can you run a reteu single sim phone in India with a retin firmware - only testing will show this. I started another thread to hopefully accumulate this over time.

I'm really interested in the answer to this question also. Can anyone please post an answer.
Can you please link the T835n update that you used. I'm still trying to figure out how to buy the right tablet off ebay that is unlocked.
Also did pie break anything on the tablet? I read something about a couple of programs didn't work anymore but can't find the thread now.
I want the LTE even though I have Verizon now I might switch to t-mobile if this works since my DW's iPad needs replacement soon. Because screw Verizon.

This thread has been dead a long time, but maybe this info will be useful for someone anyway ...
My Tab S4 SM-T830 died. Don't like the keyboard form factor on the Tab S6/S7 (very hard to use on a plane and I travel a lot) ...
So, bought an SM-T835N (new from S. Korea) that arrived today. Decided to risk flashing the UK version of the SM-T835 ROM (from Sammolbile) onto it, in theory, I could always reflash the original ROM if things didn't work out.
All good! The SM-T835N now reports as an SM-T835. Put in a Vodafone SIM and that works ... so, happy-chappy me!
Now have LTE/4G and 6GB of RAM

That sounds better. Once you are able to SIM-Unlock, you can Bootloader unlock and flash the Global firmware.
It's doable. The Global/EU ROMs will break your modem, so you'll have to re-flash your TMO modem back in order to get connectivity. I will not be making a guide until MSM is available.

You can ask the same for why they removed dual sim support on Global that's not opened up when you flash another region.
At a minimum, the T-Mobile ROM has device_policy.xml set explicitly to ssss single sim. Replacing it with dsds enabled device_policy.xml from another region crashes the modem. Flashing another region's modem.img does the same thing essentially.
But I am on EU OTA and working awesome. 5G coverage with T-Mobile

But I am still wondering why this would break if EU and Global work perfect with T Mobile. That is so weird. I have seen plenty of threads of T Mobile users unlocking and flashing Global without problems. This is first I have seen of this. This is so weird to me. Like doesn't make sense if EU and Global work with T Mobile so by switching it would stop working. That makes no sense to me.

It's not that the modem doesn't work on the carrier, it's that the modem itself crashes. I'm referring specifically to T-Mobile branded device where the model number ends in 7
If someone on an EU device want to send me their redacted qxn or trust me with their full qxn, I can test somethings out
That is crazy... Cause guaranteed T Mobile users have done this but I haven't read of modems crashing. Truly interesting.

I can almost guarantee you I'm one of the first LE2127 owner to unlock the bootloader and do this.
Why are you even arguing with me about a device you don't have, and whereas I can actually test this stuff and find out exactly what makes the modem power on again?

Hmm ... indeed ... lost root as well ... upgrade itself went fine ... followed process outlined in https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...thout-wiping-data-and-retaining-root.4356065/

I certainly wonder what "12.0.0 (SQ1D.211205.016.A1, Dec 2021)" is. At least "12.0.0 (SQ1D.211205.016.A4, Dec 2021, EMEA carriers)" specifies what it's for.

I was wondering that myself. Give it a try and post your results. I doubt it'll fix the root problem, but who knows. The radio versions are different between the two. I'm guessing it has updates for the US carriers. I wish Google was a little clearer on which version is for which phone.

It's always been different radios. But who knows until we get a guinea-pig

Using the EMEA build and it's the same with Magisk not working.

Another user @Dataman100 also lost root. Is it just us?
I used the same process as with previous updates...

Root seems to be broken on December update / don't flash until it's solved
There is some talk in the P6 race to brick Telegram group, it seems that the december update is causing root to fail. So until this is fixed/solved, DO NOT UPDATE IF YOU WANT TO RETAIN ROOT.

I sideloaded that ota and all good but no root. Might have to clean flash this December build unless its magisk that needs updating.

Clean flashing will make absolutely no difference to Magisk not working.

I would just wait. I think the magisk just needs an update.
I too used the u.s. carriers (it was an implementation of subwave on all u.s. phones I believe)
and no root, we just have to wait for a magisk update probably

The model doesn't matter, it's a region thing. EMEA is for UK, Ireland, France and Germany (and maybe other parts of Europe as EMEA stands for Europe, Middle East and Africa)

I am from the middle east and I upgraded to the 12.0.0 (SQ1D.211205.016.A1, Dec 2021) file.
I wonder if the EMEA file will be any different.

I suspect it's labelled UK, Ireland France and Germany because that is where it is sold officially. You should probably be using EMEA but it might not make much difference.

Question CAN F936U FLASH F936U1 Firmware?

hello,I want to F936U flash F936u1 Firmware,how can I do?
I'm absolutely sure that you can do that.
I have tried it yesterday and successfully changed the model.
But, you can't flash it via ordinary Odin. You have use a patched Odin which can be found in XDA and flash the u1 firmware in it.

我绝对确定你可以做到这一点。
我昨天试了一下,成功换了型号。
但是,你不能通过普通的 Odin 来刷机。您使用了一个可以在 XDA 中找到的修补过的 Odin,并在其中刷新 u1 固件。

I'll probably be trying this myself in the next few days. Will update if I do.
Let me know once you do it. Thx.
Ok I just flashed from U1 to a W ROM, specifically F936U1UES1AVJ1 (Android 12, XAA) to F936WVLU1BVK3 (13, XAC), and it all seems like it works fine. I'll update if I run into anything in the next few days.
Just a note that although it doesn't matter, it was originally a SM-F936U (updated to U1 then W)

Hey shorty I bought it used with U firmware and just to be safe to make sure it's stock and the fact U (and W) versions didn't get much updates, I flashed with the U1. Android 13 was released first for unbranded Canada XAC and since I'm actually using on Canadian networks, might as well. So far ok. No issues to report.

Hey I have a question, in order to update to the W XAC, did you have to delete user data? Or were you able to update keeping your data. Thanks

Hey I'm not too sure if you mean this, but yes mine is factory unlocked (actually a dev/demo device). And yes on Canadian network. You can always flash with the newest ATT ROM if yours is from ATT but hasn't gotten updates. Just make sure it indeed is the right model.

I did not keep user data so not sure if you can or should. But I think if you're switching model/CSC, the general consensus is to do a clean flash. If you just want to enable Canadian bands that are disabled on a US device, you can search up a way to do so I think using engineering mode.

Okie dokie sounds good I'm just looking into it and noticed all varients have a similar codes and my pituitary one has the firmware matching the MetroPCS firmware but the only firmware that I have found for at&t comes up as the smf936u1 at least on sammobile I suppose I'll have to check other firmware sites thanks for the reply hope you are having a wonderful day

If you're on any of the U or U1 firmware, I think you can safely flash to any other U/U1 without any issues. I usually cross reference with samfw and Frija too. Have a wonderful day too friend.
Would this enable Sim for phones without it? The SM-F9360 does not have esim support, could be software, I hope.
Can i go from U to W and then root? Or not possible?
Can I go from ATT and flash TMO variant if the model number is the same? SM-F936U? The phone is unlocked FYI. [email protected]
