Daydream VR - Samsung A7 (2017) - Samsung Galaxy A3, A5, A7 (2017) Questions & Answe

Hi all,
I like to share my experience using Daydream VR on the unsupported Samsung A7 (2017). After following steps to root and add lines of code to the hardware XML file to enable Daydream to work, I find an odd behavior with Daydream app and any Google VR apps like street view. The double stereoscopic images open and are displayed momentarily but freezes. At first, I thought this was a total failure and the reason why the phone is incompatible or not supported for Daydream VR. However, by chance, I swiped down to reveal the the top status bar whilst in the stereoscopic landscape mode and the daydream controller and the VR view came to life and worked for as along as the status bar is revealed. I turned on the VR develop mode to check framerates and with overlays on in VR mode it didn't freeze. Frame rate was around 60 dipping sometimes to 50 on the start screen.
This is a small market for people trying VR and was wondering if anyone has experienced the same and also know of a fix or workaround to this problem. I don't believe the issue is a software type rather than hardware but I'm no expert! I've read a few topics regarding 'Immersive' mode but found nothing specific to this experience.
Thanks for reading and your input if you have any.

Update.
I've stumbled upon a work around. The Samsung phone comes with an app called Game Launcher. This places a small, movable red button overlaid onto the game when it switches to full screen. Pressing it opens a popup menu for in-game screen shots and to start video recording of the game in full screen. Anyway, I am digressing. Launching the Google Daydream app via the Samsung Game Launcher prevents the stereoscopic view from freezing. There's some jitter on black divider between the two views but other than that, the app runs and the controller works smoothly. Thought I'd share this info. Tested only with A7 (2017), rooted and stock rom 7.0.

[HOWTO] Turn off screen (kind of) while recording.

So I know a few people have asked about this around the net and I've yet to find a solution for this so I thought I'd post my little workaround.
Anyone that's tried to create a long timelapse with the GNex will tell you 1) you NEED to be plugged into AC the whole time and 2) Phone gets extremely hot. Since brightness is automatically increased when recording video, and can't be decreased I use the following combo/setup as a workaround.
Download Screen Filter from Market (**** a play store) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.haxor&hl=en
This app essentially lets you tint your mobile screen from a percentage range of 2-98% of your current brighthness.
Once the app installed go into drawer and add the apps widget to one of your home screens, and set your desired tint percentage. I'm currently at 2% and that makes my screen look like its completely off (except for softkeys)
The final product ends up looking like this..
lol and for all you pervos out there dont be using this workaround to secretly record down/up women's clothes and such...
there is a spycam app called simple notepad that will give you a complete black screen while recording and lets you take pictures by tapping the screen. it works great with amoled scene since the phone looks like it's off when there is a black background. it'd didn't work so good on my atrix but great on the captivate. It's not in the market so you will have to google it.
thanks for the tip I'll check it out
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
but how can you do anything after recording has started? my phone stops recording even if i press the home button.
or do you darken it before you start recording, and then navigate blindly? how do you undarken it afterwards?
hmm... the screen filter idea seems kind of good, even though you have to navigate blind through the menu... I wish there was a native way of achieving this, just like a button in the camera to turn the screen off and back on again on a tap somewhere or so... But I think it works for my problem, thank you for your idea.

Full screen on some applications.

I have a problem with some applications. They don't want to use full screen. For example Spotify. There is a black bar above navigation bar.
Is this problem related to spotify app or something related to operating system?
Do you have similar problem?
I think that maybe the 18:9 aspect ratio or the resolution perhaps isn't supported by all apps yet. I face the same problem with Ingress, but found a workaround to make the black bar smaller: By hiding the status bar for that specific app you have that issue with, here's a link: (No root needed)

same problem for me with spotify
any solution?

I wrote a post on spotify community page, but no real answers so far. So, we have to be patient.
More apps have this problem..I asked developer of one of them and they said that in the future they plan to support 18:9 apps lol its 2018 already they should have it..
color os.5 has feature to scale any app to 19:9
so i hope someone can port the feature into aosp/androidOne
any solution?
Solution
If you're looking fullscreen + gestures (like in MIUI) you're looking for this app - Fluid Navigation Gestures (search google play store)
It works BETTER than original, allows for customization and forces all "2D" apps to render full screen. Not games though
You'll need adb as well to make that program work

All apps are show notch, running granular immersive mode. Still bar above.

So i just got the phone last night and i applied both to try and force any and all apps to show notch so i can enjoy all of my screen. Idc how i have to do it but for whatever reason when i open certain apps, they still overlay a gray, white, black, empy bar where my notifications would normally go and its very frustrating.
I gave granular permission, put full screen on every app and even told every app to show the notch... Is there any other way to bypass this issue so i can get any app regardless if it likes the aspect or not to show the notch and remove this bar?
Could still use help with this https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/471469010672812033/544203189558181900/Screenshot_20190210_120903_com.facebook.katana.jpg

Are just some examples. White bar is where it should show the app and if it were digital, my notch
I have this problem with certain apps even forcing show notch just turns in showing a white bar instead of black in landscape.
I don't think there's something we can do about it atm, I guess it's more of an app incompatibilities with notch since it works perfectly with some apps and not the others. Not sure if it's on Huawei or Dev's app side.
When it doesn't work It's better to let it black than white for your screen.
Thankfully I'm glad I'm not the only one and it's not just a me problem. Thing is. IDK how to force a certain color up above. Like for example if I use Nova to swipe up as search, it will just put a white bar up there... And you can see someone else is doing it cause for a split millisecond it shows the operation as intended with just the search box. Quickly after though it sticks that bar. Same thing with for example Sao internal factor (game)
When you start up the game it'll give you the entire screen, but soon as you check your mail or news and close them, the white line takes over where the notch is. Very frustrating and I feel like it's in the system, not the game... But who knows I could be wrong
I just hope a mod or fix is made soon because if I had know I would not be able to take advantage my entire screen, I would never have bought the phone

Fullscreen apps in landscape mode

I figured out that here would be the best place to ask.
I am struggling with the crappy fullscreen mode in landscape - the area around the camera is always either black or white. Did some tests - the most of the apps to not utilize the screen, where only the notification bar (being on the long side in landscape mode) does. Strangely enough, Google Maps and Google Translate DO utilize the whole screen in landscape mode, where as hangouts or gmail don't. This is with setting for full screen apps.
Did some reading and it seems like there are 2 ways - either the app forces the fullscreen or the OEMs. Did some tests with my own app at it looks like the only way for the app to appear fullscreen is to be allowed in the app. Is that so?
Does Gmail also have this blank area on other phones?
As you say, some apps use the full area, others don't, I believe the issue resides in the apps, not the device

Question The Latest Features of Galaxy Z Fold4 Coming to Fold 3 with OneUi 4.1.1.

The Galaxy Z Fold series has always been about shapeshifting, with different ways to increase functionality, whether your device is opened or closed. With the new Taskbar, you can access and switch between apps faster than ever, providing a familiar PC-like layout that puts everything you need right at your fingertips.
With drag-and-drop support straight from the Taskbar, multitasking5 on Galaxy Z Fold is easier than ever. Dragging an app to the edge now opens split view, while dragging it into the center will open it in pop-up view, giving you multiple ways to see your apps and easy switching between views.
Sometimes the best apps come in twos and threes. If there are apps you find yourself using together, you can now add pairs or groups of apps to the Taskbar, allowing you to access your favorite app pairs all at once.
Multitasking features are also more intuitive and easier to interact with now, thanks to new gestures. With simple swipe gestures, you can instantly switch full-screen apps to pop-up windows or split your screen in half for more ways to manage your tasks.
The Galaxy Z series offers a truly versatile photography experience, making the most of its flexible form factors. With Dual Preview, you and your subject can see the shot at the same time before it’s captured by displaying the image both on the Main and Cover Screen. Now with full control of the camera right on the Cover Screen, you can take high-resolution selfies with the main camera using Rear Cam Selfie.
