thinking to buy mi max- screen quality doubt...

As written up- I consider buying max but most reviews said screen is not too good (not resolution but colors, they mostly say it is too bluish...)
Clearly, screen is main reason to buy this phone so this is deal breaker...
From owners- is it really so badly calibrated or bad itself?
I know that there is apk kcal for calibrating on low level qualcomm based phones screen (on cm or aosp). As there is cm13 for max, did anyone tried this?
any feedback is precious, thanks...

I ordered a Xiaomi Mi Max last weekend after reading the review linked below, the most incredibly comprehensive review I've ever seen of a smartphone. I'm still waiting on the phone, it is still being shuffled about China, so I can't give my own opinion of the screen yet.

Before my Mi Max 64 (pro) I used my Note 5. The note has a obviously better screen with higher resolution, but my Mi Max is no slouch. My complaint about the phone is the camera. While it takes well lit indoor/outdoor snaps of stationary targets, I found shooting my 4 month puppy (that didn't sound right), dodging and running was a near impossibility. Doesn't seem different camera app, ROM or update will solve the problem as it is hardware driven.
I'll be selling my Mi Max when another large screen phone with good camera comes around (Honor Note 8, Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra or Lenovo phab 2 pro), but meanwhile I love the large form factor an quick response of the SD 652.
But the screen: That's the last of my concerns. actually only the camera bothers me)

Don't worry about the screen, it's fine. I use Color Control from the Play Store to calibrate the saturation. Now it looks like an AMOLED minus the deep blacks. You'll be satisfied with the screen in the Mi Max.

Agree! Apart from the camera, this phone leaves little room for complaint. I was wondering if there is some way ige quality can be improved through some software tweak or better preset shooting mode configurations. Tried Open camera, CameraNext Mod and Focal. Did notice a slight difference. But low light photos still frankly suck when I compare it to my previous LG G Pro 2.

Wondering what do you guys expect from a under $300 phone... It has plenty for that price already.

thanks guys, it is not problem in expecting much for low money. I had almost all samsung flagships in last few years (s4, s6, note 1, note 3, note 4, now note 5). I want big screen- and is there better solution?
Huawei have some but software is terrible for my opinion... and no development at all...
I will, if buy max, install cm first minute- so how it works is there any major problem (autobrightness or big battery drain). Camera is last important for me...

you can try manual camera app to set shutter speed as high as possible to shot moving objects

Yes it can be adjusted. It's honestly not that bad even without adjustments.

Nothing wrong with the screen. I have never thought about wanting to calibrate it. I don't think it has a blue cast. My XA Ultra on the other hand...

I use the glare removal reading setting for apps that I spend a long time looking at. It adds a yellowish cast to the screen. I suffer insomnia so blue light is a concern for me. My sleep hasn't been great since buying the max but that's entirely due to not being able to put it down! I use twilight also to counter blue light at night.

I bought my Max (3/32) from Xiaomi Authorized store, and wanna say, it's not bluish! BUT, my friend got the "best" version, and the screen of his phone is... little yellow-ish, or something like that. He got his phone from Gearbest, that's what i know. Before Mi Max i used another phones with 6,44" screen size - Sony Z Ultra's. Every phone (i replaced 3) had differently calibrated screen. The best way is to get phone and (if you don't like calibration) tune screen for your preferences. We all have little different eyes.

Reviews really not like this screen, but ok.
I would go on cm13 of course: how is camera quality and autobrighness there?
Every phone has this problem on cm...

I thought the screen was pretty good, the reviewers must be spoilt constantly around $800 phones. For this price point I was quite impressed.

5t screen resolution compared to today's flagships. Is it good enough?

Hello everyone.
In considering the Oneplus 5t as a replacement to my good old Samsung note 4, especially for the price compared to today's flashships.
One of the main factors when I chose any device is the screen quality. I understand the 5t scores really high in this sector, but I'm worried about the resolution and screen DPI.
My note 4 and all today's flagships have higher resolutions, and I'm wondering if anyone has compared the 5t screen with other devices and can notice any real difference in daily life, mainly while browsing pictures were pixels become more evident.
I considered the Note 8 and LG v30, but I really can't stand those curved edges, and I don't need a pen since I don't use the one on my note 4.

I upgraded from the Note 4 to the OP3T and then the 5T. My decision was based on easy root and Dev community. I cannot notice a significant difference in screen resolution (if you look at TV resolution guides you'll see that you need to be insanely close to the screen to notice on something as small as a phone). OnePlus allows you to manually adjust the DPI to suit your preference so you can have tiny icons and such. I love this phone compared to my Note 4. Way snappier and no slow down from TW.
I personally have never thought "this screen would be better if it was 4k". But Samsung's infinity display is definitely a better display if that is your only concern.

Since you had a note 4, how would you compare the screen with the 5t one? Would you consider the 5t an upgrade in terms of quality, color accuracy, brightness, watching angles etc?
Also, is the 5t camera overall an upgrade compared to the note 4?

Full disclosure I didn't use the camera on the Note 4 all that much, but looking through the pictures that I took with it the OP5T seems to take much better pictures. The portrait mode is also great to have.
As for the screen, I personally don't notice a difference in quality. Small text still has clearly defined edges that I can see. I don't use my phone for VR so I can't comment there. I really like the colors on the display and didn't notice any significant color difference between the two, but this is subjective. It is plenty bright and I think that might be an upgrade from the Note 4 as I seem to recall having to manually adjust the brightness to actually see it whenever I stepped outside and still having some issues. Viewing angles are also great with this phone. I don't have any color shift unless it's a pretty extreme angle.
The one thing the screen has going for it is it's size and lack of bezels, which I really love. Other than that I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find a significant difference between the two unless you looked really closely or had special equipment. So not really an upgrade in screen quality, but definitely not a downgrade. The rest of the phone is a huge improvement though. Way faster to use and a much better update schedule.

Thanks . Such a reply is much better than any review on the net, as you gave real life experience.
I'm really satisfied with the Note 4 display, and if this isn't a downgrade, that's grade. Being with much less bezels and overall lighter is a huge plus too.

I'm a Note 4 to 3T and now 5T convert.
Updates aren't an issue with OP, they're doing a fine job now. If I had to complain, and I don't need to, it's the security updates are always behind.
I don't have the issues that a lot of others are having. I also don't have a lot of crap apps on my phone. 100% stock with dark theme, BT always on, brightness between half and 3/4 and I'm averaging 1.25 day of battery and 8hrs of SOT.
In regards to the screen, it's made by Samsung. I'm surprised at how easy it was to adjust to. Choose your preset or customize it and run with it.
Camera, hmm, it's good but not as good as the Note 4 in low lighting. Once you get to know how to use the camera, other pics come out quite nicely. Most of the pics I take are of circuit boards and car parts.
Audio, unfortunately I'm hearing impaired so I try not to comment on it. I will say that it seems like every other update the volume output changes either up or down. I notice this when I'm connected via BT to my cars radio.
I can't walk and chew gum so I'm not a VR user.

Hellz yeah it is. It's excellent and it's even better than some QHD displays out there like the G6.

I honestly wouldn't worry about the screen resolution, it's fine, honest. On the plus side, the HD+ screen means the GPU has less pixels to push around.
My best advice would be to compare it side by side with other devices in the flesh if you can, that way you can see if you like the colour tone of the screen. I've spent several years using a succession of cheap devices bought directly from China. All of them have had LCD screens rather than AMOLED. I'm finding it very hard to get used to the screen because it looks so yellow whenever looking at anything white. If you want accurate colours (reds and blues accurate) you need to have the screen set to sRGB or DCI P3 and with either of those options whites look very yellow indeed. I've compared my phone to two other 5ts now and they have all been the same. I think I'm gradually getting used to it, but I've had to set the screen colour to 'custom' and as cool possible to get anywhere close to acceptable whites. The downside of this is it comes with very oversaturated reds. When comparing the 5t to the panels on the S8+ and Note, they seem whiter and generally a better panel.
Having said all this, I'm happy with the device in most ways and the resolution is basically fine for me.

I actually find that the Samsung panels that I've been looking at (S8/Note 8/S7) have been generally the same as the 5T as far as whites go (very good), but the S8/Note 8 tends to have reddish whites and the S7 had a greenish white. The 5T was much better.

That's interesting, I wonder if the type of lighting makes a difference? In the shop where I compared them my eyes honestly thought the Samsungs had more pop AND better colours. Their whites were closest to the LCD screen on my old Xiaomi Redmi Note 2. I also felt that the middle range Samsung's had all the same 'issues' as my 5t, i.e. a bit yellow when displaying white backgrounds, and very over saturated reds that look almost scarlet or florescent. I guess it must come down to what each person is used to and how they perceive colour? I'm gradually getting used to the 5t and I really like how it looks when playing a game. Doom 3 looks really lovely on it

I think there are a lot of factors going on. Lighting, personal perception, etc.

I went from the original Oneplus One to the Nexus 6P and now to the 5T. At first, I was also a bit worried that the display on the 5T would be less sharp compared to the 6P, due to the difference in DPI. But when I got the 5T, I could hardly tell the difference. The display was just as good and even brighter and vivid.

Although OP5T screen is beautiful perfect, But if screen is still a concern, LG V30 is a way to go.
I guess only difference is resolution...Pixel counts.

Uhm, no.
The V30 has one of the worst screens of all current (flagship) phones.
The one in the 5T is way, way better.

In direct comparison with the S8 I can tell the difference. But its not to great. Colors and everything else are really similar. Unless you use it for VR its very ok in my opinion.

Can confirm. Had a pixel 2 xl for a few weeks (same LG POLED panel). Brightness uniformity is horrible and whites are very grainy. Don't miss anything about that display.

Display scrolling smear ghosting

Hello,
I got the redmi note 5 global, but I noticed when scrolling icons and text are smearing when scrolling.
I had the same problem on the mix mix 2 and sold it, people said it is because its a lcd screen but I don't have that with my old LG G6.
So is Xiaomi using very bad lcd panels?
And why is it not general reported by reviews they said the screen was awesome, but if u are scrolling it smears the text and icons clearly visable.
I got atm a Samsung s8 plus, and don't any of those issues...
Also my lcd monitor don't have those issues.

No idea, never noticed any "smearing", and if it was a thing im sure someone would have noticed and reported. Its either your eyes or defective unit. All reviews praise this screen as its probably best in this price range.

From QHD to fhd. Where did you purchase yours?

Curious who had a qhd phone before getting the rog2
Im still using my lg v20 because of the battery swapping option. Huge plus for me.
Been jumping back and forth between buying a note 9 and rog 2. Issue is with the screen. Those whove used qhd know that when you pickup an fhd screen you can tell its fhd. Maybe its just me. As im a photographer so I notice immediately
Btw, A famboy of neither. I dislike both companies. I have no sentiment to any brand and they just sell products to me.
So tell me what phone you had before the rog 2 please?

So..... I used a S9+ before I switched to ROG Phone 2. I have to say, you will notice the difference. But, you'll get used to it. It will be indistinguishable at a certain distance. Also 120hz gives a much better experience. Other than that, do more research between ROG 2 and Note 9. If camera is a priority, I personally feel like ROG 2 will have a better camera for daylight photography. Sony sensors are great at color accuracy. With Samsung, overexposure will be an issue and the image will be super sharp. Which might also be a problem if you do some post processing as you can't revert that sharpness filter.

this is a gaming phone, not a phone for photography enthusiasts. why even bother with rog phone 2 if you want qhd screen?

Im worried about going from qhd to fhd in that it will really stand out. Im buying it for a bit of gaming. Will probably get the cooler and controller but i want no lag. I have an lg v20. Yes old. But the screen is very nice . Sharp. No complaints. But lag at times which drives me crazy. So ita between a zippy experience with rog2 and fhd screen or possibly a bloaty lag experience with the note9 but a sharp screen.
Sharp screen and no lag together would be preferred. Maybe i can tweak no animations on note 9 and just remove bloat. Im not certain and i hope i can deal with the resolution difference. I did once pick up a Samsung fhd and immediately noticed. It was good but it stood out as something off. Maybe ill get either, try it out then sell it if i cant adjust to it.
Zippy no lag amd sharp is my thing

I still have Moto Z2 Force as my primary phone. I love the screen. You can see the difference between this one and ROG 2 screen.

Ah man. That's a bummer. I may get used to the rog2 but now it made me think

i switched from the Pixel 2XL to the rog phone 2 (and got it from Trading Shenzen so it is the chinese one), i mainly use my phones for Youtube, Netflix etc. and i have to say qhd is (for me) not worth to look out for that feature.

Im sure you noticed a difference in the beginning between the qhd pixel to the rog2 and then you juat got used to the rog2, correct?

I have a LG V10 as my back up phone and still use it daily for misc house things (ir blaster for example). You'll really enjoy the ROG 2. It's a deff upgrade in everyway except durability (kinda hard to beat the physical endurance of the V20).

So if you're a photographer why do you even bother?
you want a good advice? get the sony 1 mark II.
the screen is 4K +600 ppi and the camera and its options will blow your mind
I have the rog 2 and I do love it but I actually bought it for gaming and because it was cheap (500$)
And although it's a great phone, it really has a low quality display.
too much black crush and also that awful red tint on gray
add some oled banding to that...
I'm also a guy who really really notices display differences even small ones.
Had an xperia x for some time and I do have to say Sony knows how to make a display.

Question Over sharpened Mi 11x Amoled display

Hi, I recently bought mi 11x and have been using it for past couple of days. What I have noticed is that the shaprness of my phone's display is very high and because of that everything looks really bad on the screen... Like artifacts around black text on white background or anything running in low resolution... Is this normal or there's any problem with my display? Should I get my device replaced? Is anyone else is facing similar issue with mi 11x/poco f3/redmi k40 ? Is this MIUI issue and will it be solved if I install custom rom?

what phone did you use prior to mi 11x ?
PS: there is no such thing as sharpened display

I had turned it off immediately after using the phone for the first time ... but Still text is a lot more sharper than normal .. and there are artifacts around text (although minute but still there).

this is not tv or monitor, phones generally don't have any Sharpness settings, pixels can be turned off or combined to the lower resolution, i simply wonder if op was using LCD or different ppi density prior to buying this phone

We don't have settings for sharpness indeed but manufacturer does . They can fine tune the display as they like...
Different phones can have different feels to them regardless of pixel density or panel type

Please refer below images. I have tried to capture the text fringing and white artifacts (light shadows) around black text with my old phone's camera.
I hope these images will give you better idea of what issue i am facing right now with AMOLED display.
The outcome required with this discussion would be to check if there is something wrong with my phone's display or this is generally normal with AMOLED displays.
And if there is some problem with sharpness, do i need to get it replaced???
P.S. - I have tried to capture the issue.. i don't know the pictures are doing the justice to reflect the issue but all these mentioned halo effects and text fringing are quite visible to the naked eyes.

this is a common problem with pentile AMOLED panels it seems. I am not sure why this still exists in 2021 though. Maybe Xiaomi and other Chinese brands are using low-quality panels. I checked a few phones. Newer Samsungs don't have this issue.
From what I searched it did popup in S3 when Samsung started using these panels first.
I checked Realme GT ME and MI 11x both and both had the same issue, whereas some old Vivo phones, MI A3, Samsung S5 were perfectly fine.
I think it's just cost-cutting from these brands to use lower-quality E4 panels.

wow... looking to my F3.... i see normal... cant see that very small haloing effect.
Try it with black text on white or white text on black also on setting menu...

Your concerns are absolutely valid and the commentors claiming sharpness doesn't exist are noobs. I've had the same issues with Xiaomi phones. It's a little like a lottery. For the same model, some devices can get a high quality display and some units get a lower quality display where you can see it to be overtuned or artifacts.
Or there could be another possibility as widely discussed, Xiaomi takes displays from multiple manufacturers but ends up using the same fine tuning values for all the units of the model, for Eg Poco F3. As a result, your friend can have the exact same device and a perfect look display while you are left with a shady display with issues.
