Unlocked S9 cannot register on Verizon MVNO? - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

I've got my unlocked S9 from Samsung. I have a Redpocket CDMA sim card, which works fine in a Samsung S7E and a Google Pixel. However, when putting this sim card in S9, the S9 could not get on its network. It shows Emergency calls only and "Not registered on network" when making a call.
Sometimes it shows "refreshing sim card data" and no network. When turning to network modes, it says "LTE/3G/2G" etc but redpocket cs seems to believe the right one should be "LTE/CDMA" instead, which is not in the list.
I tried various usual ways such as factory reset etc, which did not change anything.
I tried a project Fi and a verizon sim card in the S9 and they were recognized with no problem. Thus I think the S9 is not defective.
I did some searches and people mentioned S8 had the same issue too: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/help/unlocked-s8-failed-to-register-red-t3736850
I am wondering whether anyone has this problem or a solution.
Will flashing to verizon firmware help?
Thanks.

I'm having the same issue with PagePlus! I just put the SIM from my VZW S6 into my unlocked S9 and when that didn't work I chatted with support to do an ESN change (I thought perhaps PP needed to do something on their end). I was told if there was no "LTE/CDMA" option that the phone wouldn't work on PP.
I tried using an app to switch between different network modes (including the LTE/CDMA/UMTS auto which my S6 uses) to no avail.
I'm tempted to try flashing the VZW firmware, but the post here makes me wonder if it will accomplish anything.

I tried that APP to force network mode too but it did not seem to work.
As an update, Redpocket customer service is really great that they moved my number from Verizon network to their GSM/ATT network, and everything works fine now. I do not want to try flashing verizon firmware for the same reason...
Too bad Samsung could not get such a simple thing right.

Can we sue them?
I faced the same issue too. Apparently, Samsung does a setting update that prevents the sim from registering for Verizon's MVNOs. I called them and they said they NEVER heard of this issue. Apparently, you all did too. I am tempted to sue Samsung for this since this could be an antitrust issue. They are preventing competition by working with Verizon and feigning ignorance. Can any of you comment on this?

I was going to go with one of Verizon's mvnos. And their SIM card would not work and I did not realize it until I spend the $40. I had to put an actual Verizon sim in my unlocked phone to use the Verizon network. So either Verizon is blocking the S9 on mvns or the mvnos don't have the updated information for the S9. Total wireless told.me it Had to be a Verizon branded phone for it to work. So I think if someone flashed the Verizon firmware on the unlocked version it probably would work.

i dont see anywhere on the post where you contacted the MVNO provider, to register the ESN or IMEI of the device.
Also does this MVNO even allow BYOD?
i remember I had a line from Cricket or Metro that had a sim card, it worked on my Nexus 5x, however inserting it to another nexus 5x, it didnt work, I had to call them to register my IMEI

Hey guys this is an old thread, but maybe this will help someone. My old Red Pocket SIM would not work on the S9, but my renewal came with a new SIM, ending in 8222-15XX (old was 8180-50XX) For ****s and giggles I put it in and it showed LTE/CDMA and verizon. Had RP CS switch my active SIM and now it works with no workaround!
TL;DR Try a new RP SIM if you are using one a year old or older.

I also have similar issue.
Where I used to get lte over voice, but no longer getting after a recent update from samsung. Using Redpocket cdma sim
Now I have lte and voice, but dont get lte over voice even though redpocket said they have enabled Volte on my line

We just added an Unlocked Galaxy S9 (replaced S5) purchased from Amazon (Black Friday sale), ordered new Sim from Pageplus (MVNO using Verizon ), called them to transfer the phone number, popped it in and the S9 configured itself for Pageplus, and everything works perfectly...

That's great news. I switched to GSMA due to CDMA issue. I will switch back to CDMA after my current plan expires.
I heard that RCS (messaging via wifi connection similar to imessage - samsung messages app supports it in pie I believe, not sure about oreo) is active in verizon now including mvnos. Have you tried it?

I tried for my unlocked note 8. For the new sim coming from red pocket, it works great at the first time. But later when I switch the sim to a GSM sim for international travel and then switch the sim back to the red pocket sim, the same problem appeared. I have to use verizon sim to get LTE/CDMA back in the emergency mode.

I think you've found the answer for those who are unable to get their existing RP SIM to work on the S6-7-8-9's running OREO or PIE. I just took a later serial numbered CDMAV SIM (89140000018821472XX), inserted it into another S8+ that I have, booted it and saw the Verizon Wireless scroll across the top. I'll chat with RP today and see if they will switch the ICCID numbers between old and new.
After countless hours looking into this problem, I tip my hat to you for the solution provided.

Try as I may, in the end it didn't work for me.

It worked for me when I flashed the latest un-branded U1 firmware G960U1 UEU6CSI1 via the patched Odin, from:
https://updato.com/firmware-archive-select-model/?record=E68EDDB6DBFB11E99E59FA163EE8F90B
I've also done a full factory reset from recovery after the flash.
I guess they must have fixed it with the latest firmware updates... ymmv

Since the August update, both of my Verizon branded S8+'s work directly upon inserting a RP sim card.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION!! (YMMV)
I had a similar problem when I upgraded to Android 10. I no longer had CDMA as a choice for Network mode. Here is the solution that worked for me:
Step #1:
Go to the phone dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#*
This will bring up a new screen
Select "Phone Information"
You will be greeted with a scary-looking screen with lots of stuff
Scroll down and look for "Set Preferred Network Type"
Select "LTE/CDMA auto (PRL)" from the drop-down
This will give you phone service... but not data.
STEP #2
To get data services, you will need to create an APN.
Go to settings/connections/mobile networks/Access Point Names
Click on add and enter the following:
APN Name: Verizon
APN: VZWINTERNET
MCC: 311
MNC: 480
Authentication Type: None
APN Protocol: IPv4/IPv6
APN Roaming Protocol: IPv4/IPv6
I found that this APN worked for me... (YMMV)
Hope this is helpful...

are you folks still having trouble with this? it doesnt seem like a difficult obstacle to overcome

Thank you sooo much! Creating the APN did the trick.

Phone Stuck Showing "Searching / No Service"

Hello all. I purchased a edge+ today but whenever I insert a sim, the phone stays on searching. I made sure that I rebooted the device and I also tried re-seating the sim many times. I believe the device is unlocked and the imei/esn is in clean standing with T-Mobile. I tried a MetroPCS sim card and it stayed on searching, same thing happened with a Verizon sim. However when I inserted the T-Mobile sim, it sometimes says no service but ever since I rebooted the device, it stays on "searching" no matter which sim is installed. I find this whole ordeal frustrating since the signal bars show up for the MetroPCS and T-Mobile sim but with Verizon nothing happens. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Yours is G928T? If yes, it does not support Verizon/Sprint even if it's unlocked.
Did you buy it off of Craigslist/Ebay? It might be blacklisted. checkesnfree.com

Yes, it's the G928T but it's not blacklisted I checked. The simcards I was using on the phone were old ones(no longer in service) I thought they would work. I used a scissor to cut my WORKING sim and placed it in the phone and it took the MetroPCS sim. Everything works fine now except calls and text only work with WiFi Calling on. If I turn off WiFi, I can't text or make calls(not on registered network) but if I turn the WiFi back on, it works fine. Any suggestions?
MetroPCS and T-Mobile are on the same network.
Check/add MetroPCS APN.
Setting -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names
Add MetroPCS APN if it's not there.

Yeah I know they are which baffles me as to why it isn't working. I tried adding a custom APN but same thing happens. I get calls/sms on WiFi but if I turn it off I get "No Service"
Just go to metro and get a new Sim. You could have damaged it by cutting it. It should be free. ATT gives me then free all the time. Usually, the phone will just auto update the apn settings when a specific carriers Sim is inserted

I went and it turns out the device is blacklisted. This whole time I was rolling with the imei in the phone, after checking last night, I noticed that the imei on the back of the device differs from the one that's actually on the software. I was able to get in touch with the seller and he's coming back to give me my money back. Guess a mod can mark this thread closed.

SIM Card Issue

What happened with my HTC 10 and my SIM card this weekend? I was able to fix it so I'll explain problem and solution. I'm just looking for an understanding from someone smarter than me.
TL : DR ==> Why do two different devices with the same service have locked SIM settings that changed between devices and causing one of the devices (HTC 10) to not have working data?
My HTC 10 is on Viper10 (Nougat Sense based). My wife's phone is a OnePlus3 (FreedomOS (stock based rooted rom on Nougat)).
Both devices are on T-Mobile same plan. We both have T-Mobile so when travelling international we enjoy using the service. Well this is our first trip with both of these devices. We land in Canada and check the box allow data roaming on both phones. The OP3 lights up immediately and has LTE data. The HTC 10 shows no data. I have a signal for voice and whatnot but no data. Going into phone settings it says "disconnected because service is unavailable" under the mobile data toggle. If I go under about phone at the bottom of settings it says LTE but it just refuses to connect the phone.
I don't have much time to mess with this on a vacation but I'm seriously not happy right now. I work though it by trying to swap the SIM cards thinking maybe that's the issue. Nope. OnePlus3 lights up data on my HTC's SIM card but the OP3's SIM card causes same error on HTC 10. I have MultiROM so I booted up a new ROM just for testing to see if maybe it was the ROM causing a problem. I switched to an AOSP based ROM and same problem. No data but I have a signal for basic phone usage.
Now I'm starting to get pissed. I went into the APN section of both phones. They both have a lock icon next to the one supplied by T-Mobile but the APNs are slightly different in their configuration. HTC 10's shows APN roaming protocol as IPV4 whereas the OP3 shows APN roaming protocol as IPV6. I manually created a new APN on the HTC 10 with the exact same settings on the OP3 and BOOM instantly got data working.
So to recap from above, why do two different devices with the same service have locked SIM settings that changed between devices and causing one of the devices to not have working data? It wasted a good hour of my trip trying to fix it. If that APN switch didn't fix it I was about to give up and just use the wife's phone for the trip.
Some things you could try...
Deleting apn settings, then hit reset to default. Then reboot phone. Also if you're using T-mobile SIMs they are tied to the device by IMEI. In TLDR seemed like you were trying to swap SIMs.
concerning the data being weird after SIM swap (if they're both unlocked) maybe they have different bands or one has stronger radio.

Thanks for the advice! I had swapped the sim card from my unlocked HTC M9 to a new unlocked HTC M10 and everything was great for a week until one morning it wasn't. I was familiar with creating new APN s when travelling. Followed your advice to a T. Worked first time. I'm currently on the Bell network in Ontario.

Another thing you can try is boot into the BOOTLOADER, not download mode, and do 'fastboot erase persist'

Also note that the command is for S-OFF only devices. And that command only helps when you downgraded the firmware from oreo to nougat or lower. For S-ON devices it works completely different. It has no relation to APN settings.

Galaxy S9 Software Update

I have a Galaxy S9 (SM-960U) purchased from T-Mobile, but unlocked and running with an AT&T SIM (among others, at times). Up until today, the phone was running the stock T-Mobile ROM which received various software updates on a monthly or every two month interval. I've installed them as they were released (while running various non-T-Mo SIM cards) and the latest was October 1, 2018. Today, I clicked the "Software Update" function and saw that a new update was available. When it installed and restarted, I noticed that the phone was running an AT&T branded ROM, along with the typical AT&T bloatware (e.g., CNN, Groupon, Amazon, AT&T-specific apps) that was not previously installed.
The other thing I noticed was that the phone now is only connecting to HSPA and HPSA+ networks, whereas before it would also connect to LTE.
I'm not sure why I suddenly received and installed an AT&T-branded ROM today when my S9 and all of my previous devices were fine running the T-Mo ROM and receiving updates as they were released. Does anyone have any insights as to what caused this change and whether future ROM updates will be carrier-specific based on the inserted SIM? In the past month I've used SIMs in Vietnam and Japan and it seems odd that ROMs would suddenly be based on the carrier of the day.
Also, any ideas about restoring LTE service? I've tried removing the SIM and powering off the device a few times, but no dice. This was a network/account-problem when I initially ported over to AT&T from T-Mo which took a lot of troubleshooting at the store (unsure of actual root cause), but it seems odd that a software update on the device would undo that.
The latest update (3BRJ5) is BYOD firmware. With B firmware, a carrier sim will change the csc of your phone to match the network you are connected on. Good luck getting LTE back, I have no idea on that.
*#*#4636#*#* entered into phone dial. That will allow to select preferred network type in device information.

you have to change APN setting on the menu to reflect AT&T network. let me know if it works by changing APN.. I used to have S9+ tmobile and I was waiting for this BYOD update but i traded in my s9+ already =/ i have note 9 unlocked now..

The issue required a visit to the AT&T store, where they replaced the SIM and reset some of the network features on the back end of my account. This required a call to the retail technical support team and about 45 min. No settings were changed on the phone. The APN settings were already configured correctly (which I had confirmed as a part of initial troubleshooting).
The phone works fine now, though some features like AT&T HD Voice and the AT&T Call Protect app still don't work. I've tried contacting them twice about it and they opened a ticket but it hasn't helped. These aren't features I used before so I don't really care.

Keep in mind though that HD voice only available to postpaid At&t only not prepaid and they do required special sim card for hd voice but since you already changed sim card then the problem is not the sim card. You can try and dial #*#*4636*#*# and see if Volte is provisioned.. I wish i had my s9+ from tmobile but i dont have it anymore i was waiting for that byod software update.. Hd voice should work on BYOD custimization update on at&t

LG G710ULM UNSUPPORTED VoLTE ?!? (Straight-Talk US - T-Mobile network)

*********UPDATE********** I bought a new sim from straight talk and VOLTE works now! (GSM compatible Straight Talk Sim card) My old sim was from 2014, so it wasn't VOLTE compatible.
I have an ebay zombie LG G710ULM flashed to latest Google Fi Android 9 software, I received an email from Straight Talk (Wal-Mart US cell phone service reseller) telling me that my LG G7 does not support VoLTE and my phone will be unable to receive calls in January 2021.
-Using a network info app, the app is telling me it is connected to T-Mobile towers (so I have a Straight Talk T-Mobile compatible SIM)
-I can't find any options to enable VoLTE in settings, and wifi calling is erroring out
I was wondering if there are ways to get VoLTE and Wifi Calling working (Straight Talk supports it, but not my current ROM/SIM).
I can switch to the following sims supported by Straight Talk.
-AT&T Compatible Sim
-Verizon Compatible Sim? If my phone supports CDMA bands
OTHERWISE MOST OF US WILL HAVE A PAPERWEIGHT IN 2021!!!!!!!!!
Same problem
I'm having the same problem. Any progress on this?
I'd like to know this too. Surprised there is no traffic here with all the knowledgeable people on this forum.
G710EAW here. BTW There was an Android 10 update just two hours ago from Android 9. Someone with an 'EM' phone in another thread said VOWifi is "working now" but how do others know if it's working when January 1st comes around?

If you guys have cross flashed roms, then volte will not work. It doesnt work for any of us who have crossflashed. Whichever model.
You need to be on original software. Looks like some licensing thing that volte requires. They need to provision volte for all the phones. Sounds like they are not interested to provision it for g7. Odd that even EAW model which has original firmware, they sent that mail too....
Sad/Odd to see your carriers are suddenly changing to only Volte.
Is there a way to put it back to original software? I actually don't need it crossflashed to anything because it's a Verizon originally and I would like to use it on that network. Or does it not work that way?

Main issue is that your carriers dont want to provision volte for your G7s. So no guarantee if cross flashing back to original will work.
There is crossflashing guide in guides section with which you can go back to stock firmware. Do this at your own risk.
In our country we have a volte carrier called Jio. They provide an app called jiocall. Using that app you could use their service even if your phone is not volte capable. You will have to see if there are such apps for your carrier. Thats the only non technical, simpler solution.
I have some information that might make all of you guys happy.
I was told by Safelink Wireless that VOTLE is a function of BOTH the phone *AND* the sim card.
Basically, if the phone itself is VOLTE compatible but the sim card is not, then the phone will be reported on their system as not compatible, and will ask you to upgrade your phone.
However if a VOLTE compatible SIM is inserted, if the phone does in fact support VOLTE, it will then work. That's because it's provisioned on the carrier via the sim card itself.
If you purchased a sim via the "Buy your own sim" package, e.g. online or from Best Buy, etc, awhile ago, then that sim is not compatible. You simply need to call Tracphone/Safelink and ask to buy a VOLTE compatible SIM (which costs 99 cents). Then when you get it, call their tech department to have them transfer the phone service and phone number to the new SIM.
You can dial the phone's service menu and go to the VOLTE/GPRI menu and if the options are there, then the phone supports it.
What's the correct service menu number for our phones?

Question New update for US TMo - adds eSim

Just updated this morning, we now have eSIM support (supposedly) with the second IMEI showing up in settings. I haven't tested it yet though, so ill try to later today.
Edit:
So my secondary carrier is GoogleFi, which won't recognize the available eSim. So I had to convert my physical TMo sim to an eSIM (permanently disabled your physical sim card). This allowed me to move my GFi card to the phone.
GFi app recognized the sim card and activated, however it looks like Samsung/TMo baked in a TMo network selection feature for this sim. Instead of recognizing that it's GFi with it's networks, you had to select if this card was a TMo/Metro/Assurance carrier. I selected TMo thinking that GFi uses them mostly around my locale that it'll work. However we now get the X on the signal chart.
My guess is this is the good ol network lock coming into play. So we got eSim and 2 sim cards...we're locked to TMo and Metro still. Hopefully better luck for those with Unlocked US phones
I have a Samsung version (still on TMO but not TMO branded) and got the update today with esim too
So new update: becareful with converting your Physical Sim to an eSim. I can't figure out why, and am on the phone with support, but the eSim for TMo doesn't register on the network. wifi-calling works for the eSim, but nothing else. In the Sim card settings, it detects an "unknown" carrier, whereas the GoogleFi (which doesn't work probably due to network lock) at least detected GoogleFi.
Edit:
So...whatever you do, don't listen to Help desk. They had me removing my eSim so that I can do the "scan qr" method even though I did the proper Convert to eSim method previously. The removal doesn't actually remove anything from the phone, so you can't "start over" hoping to try a different method. Even if it could, you disabled the physical sim, so you have no method of receiving the TMo verification codes needed to add a sim card to the phone. You literally lock yourself out of the network until they send you a new physical sim or reactivate your old sim
To reactivate the old sim, while forgoing the text message, is a 10min processs. Fortunately that's probably the most straight forward aspect. The 10min wait is to let the verification process timeout and it'll just activate.
I gotten it 5 days ago I really like the new features
What is esim?

Esim is where you can ditch the actual sim card and your phone have a built-in sim card manager to keep digital copies
I switched one of my other lines to my fold3 esim today (on TMO network) and been on with support for a while now they have no idea the issue. But it detects it as a T-Mobile network but it won't discover the number. It stays as unknown number. Can't use the data, calls or texts but it activated
Edit: after going back and forth with tech support, the issue has reversed itself. Now the esim has a number but no provider lol will keep this post updated
Edit 2: after more back and forth with some escalated executive support team they found the problem and fixed it. It's supposedly a bug in Samsung's esim that needs manual high level settings changed on TMOs end to fix on a per device basis

I'd like to say that after several days with physical sim and esim, I've zero problems. It just works. My only complaint is how voicemail is handled for the 2nd sim.
