I was supposed to create a thread regarding this but yes, I can confirm my P20 got scratched on the plastic strip surrounding the the screen as well!!! It is annoying!! why the heck did they use glossy plastic instead of the matte (like on the iPhone X)!!!! Mine actually was covered with case since day 1 but the friction on the case caused this!
SO.... ANYTHING THE TOUCHES THE PLASTIC WILL CAUSE IT TO GET SCRATCHED. PERIOD. Screw Huawei!

I just noticed that, the plastic is pretty thick, about 1mm, and I though it was a curve glass that run right down to the metal, also do note the metal around the back camera is also very easy to get scratched.

I have issue with p20 after a week use with fulltime case on. Very poor quality build.

oh well, I just have to live with the scratches. I'm just pissed that Huawei overlooked this issue when they did their QA.

Same here. Very bad quality. Shame on you, Huawei.

I have the issue of the back panel getting really scratched uo even with a case on permanently

Yep. I got the same issue. Damn it. I've been carefull with the phone all the time. It is perfect except that area u mentioned.

that's just stupid for a 700 USD phone.

Can anyone share a screenshot of these scratches you guys are talking about? I've had mine for about 3 weeks now (factory case+screen protector on) and don't see these scratches.

Some pics

any fix for this? at least to make the scratches less visible? damn piss me off.

I got Huawei P20 Pro and after 5 min of use it already has scratches on back glass. Sony XPERIA XZ2 Premium after a month without any case still doesn't have scratches on back glass. Bad quality for this price. Very disapointed. **** quality.

come on guys, it cant be that bad. I saw a ton of 2nd hand p20s and none of them had those scratches.. I had p9, p10, mate 9 .. and never had any issues. I am planing to buy regular p20, but you are getting me worried

I don't have any scratches... What are you doing with these phones??!! Scratches cannot comes by itself

I can confirm the same issue. I dont know why they decided to use plastic. I owned m2 m3 and now i own mediapad m5 and they all are with metal body with no signs of scratches in normal use. I'm too quite disappointed. Its weird build quality to be worse than their tablets for such high price. Otherwise i like the phone very much. The back is quite sensitive to scratches. I have one already even I've never use it without case. But it's very cool and beautiful with glass back. Can someone with mate 10 pro can confirm if the build quality is better or the same.

I think the P10 has the same "flaw" but I never had any issues with it.
edit: I bought a new p20, used the huawei case that comes in the box from the day 1..and yes.. I can already (after a week or so) see some scratches around the screen. nothing major though.. you have to go outside and keep tilting the phone from one side to another to be able to notice it.

I think they're factory scratched

Hello! Im from Chile, I have this phone since a couple of weeks now and yes, I can confirm that it has this exact same issue.
I'm a maniac when it comes to phone care, I've been using mine with the silicone case included since day 1, in fact I still haven't removed the back protective film, I think those scratches appear because of the friction caused when you put on the case and take it off a couple of times. The other day, I had to swap SIM cards a couple of times and noticed those ugly scratches, thought it was dirty but nope, it's a bummer for a premium flagship device, bad idea to use black, glossy and cheap plastic on the bezel.
Well... I guess we will have to live with it, because changing the whole LCD panel is not cheap nor easy, it's not worth the hassle.

Bezels scratches easily

I've had my note 4 for the past 3 days or so, and I keep my phones very well, I just noticed bezels are scratched..and it's been in my hands or on my bed 90% of the time. The iPhone 5 and 5s have had the same issue but not as bad as this.
Any have any recommendations on what should I do? I was going to buy a Spigen case but the reviews where horrible and read the clear case they have scratch up users phones.
What color?
Yeah I noticed mine have very fine lines on it.

Spigen cases are awful imo. I have no idea in the world how they got so popular. Most of their cases look good and that's where it ends. They often have fitment issues, they make phones wider than they need to be, they are made pretty cheaply and have a hefty price tag.
I'm just glad that people are starting to wake up. If you look up their Note 4 cases and some newer phones on Amazon, they have very unfavorable reviews.
I recommend you purchasing the pelican voyager case for 60$ on AT&T or Amazon.com. I have it and It is the best case I ever used. I also purchased the otterbox defender case but I don't like it because it's to bulky. I prefer the pelican because of the size and durability it offers. The military and fire dept use this material for all there things
I ordered the Neo Hybrid, Paid 20$ should arrive today in the morning.
I have the black model and I am extremely anal about how I handle my phone. I never put anything in my pocket with it and I even dust out the lint periodically from my pocket. I've noticed a few light scuff like marks on the bottom corners of the chamfered edges. Nothing to lose your head over, but I've only had the thing for less than 2 weeks so I'm kind of worried what it will look like in a year despite my ultra careful handling.
I haven't scratch mine so far but if that ever happens I plan to sand the bezel and polish it to a shine.

At the risk of appearing the fool, I thought I'd still chime in and ask the obvious...did you guys peel the very thin plastic that goes all the way around the phone? I really only mention it cuz I had the same thing happen to me the first day and was in disbelief that I had somehow damaged the edges. Then I noticed the gouges were actually in the very thin plastic I hadn't seen was still on the bezel. I know it's probably not the issue you all are having but figured I check just in case.
I'm using a Spigen Capsule tpu case and it works fine for me

Yes, i peeled it the first day I got it. I returned the phone today, just ordered my Note 4 in white from Amazon. Arriving on friday, can't wait to use it with my Spigen Neo Hybrid that arrived today.
Yeah i have the spigen capsule case and it puts marks on the shiny metal part of the bezels from taking it off and on. I'm pretty anal about my phones for resale value because i can never stick with one phone but oh well what did you expect it's a really soft metal. We the users asked for aluminum because of the "premium feel". I don't really care it's a phone. I'm more worried about performance and battery life

The Voyager looks nice, but I don't want to be raped by AT&T once again. Nothing from AT&T is priced reasonable. especially if they have an exclusive (according to the Pelican site, AT&T has exclusive on them, and I do not find them on Amazon).
I have to join in to the post because its really weird that these aluminium sides are easy to scratch in a phone for this price even when you use I case maybe it will prevent the phone from scratches but when removing or applying the case you can leave some marks or scratches on these silver sides. I hate this that samsung didn't really think this through when build something incredible but if just that the frame could me made from a different material and it doesn't have to be shiny but Samsung always gets something wrong that how this industry works even Iphone is not perfect.

Aluminum is a soft metal the fact that it scratches is not surprising at all. They thought it through just fine what do you think they should have made it out of? Some magical material? Or perhaps you would prefer they made it out titanium which would quadruple the price. Its about tradeoffs and since every manufacturer has a hard on for metal phones for the masses your going to be stuck with aluminum.
The case is not scratching the metal, it is physically impossible for the plastic to do so. Its the debris that is rubbing up against in between the case and the phone.
Note 4 is still a beautifully made device... even with the scuffs. Solid too.
Somewhere I saw (pocketnow?) I high grit sand paper gently applied will remove the scuffs. I have a nasty one on the top left corner from a fall My fault though because I don't use a case.

Display damages, glass crackes when Mi6 falls down?

Hello,
i thinking of buy a Mi6, but now i read that the phone has no gorilla glass and some people shows youtube videos like an unprotected phone fall from a chair (about 50cm) and the glass of the frontside crackes. Is it really so easy to break the glass?
I would use it like all of my phones with a slim silikon case and a screen protector film.
Greetings Kullino

Enough for protection?
I have been using Mi 6 for about 5 month and I still have the case that was in the box with the phone, it is great but I also recommend a glass screen protector even though It looks bad and doesn't stick on the border of the phone. I have dropped the phone a couple of time already and my screen protector is cracked all over, without it think the screen would be gone
No amount of protection will prevent screen from cracking on any phone after an unlucky fall. There are no big differences across modern phones regarding that. They're all fragile enough to crack after falling on the floor.
Keep in mind that the MI6 is significantly heavier than the other flagships.
I bought this case from gearbest and looks really solid. https://gearbest.app.link/F0VWCY9eoJ
It's a bit expensive, but I think it's worth it.
The bigger problem from this case is the USB port cover.
Ruins the original phone look, but looks really nice in its own way.
I have the black version.
i have this. Best case ever. Search on aliexpress.

I bought a 3 dollars armor case with a stand from aliexpress, its real good, my phone already fell a number of times, some real bad, but no damage or crack. No screen protector either because they are a scam but it seems people think they are miraculous

Any scratches? I hope not...

Hi all, Has anyone scratched the plastic body on the 3a yet? I know there is a video from JerryRigEverything but I normally don't draw on the back of my phones with sharp tools. This is more of a real world question. Has anyone dropped their's by accident? Or has the phone slid across a rough surface? How does it look afterwards.? Thank you for reading.
Yes, I know using a case is ideal but I normally ditch the case after the phone is a few months old. I also have a tempered glass on it considering some folks say it is inferior to Gorilla Glass.

I have mine in a case so havent had any issues. But if your gorilla glass always gets scratched im assuming from not using a screen protector, then why do u even care if the plastic gets scratchex?
I run a glad screen protector and case. I'm too hard on my phones to go unprotected.

Same hardness, scores lower on bend testing. In other words you'll be ok without the protector or more accurately as ok as you would be with the gorilla.

It you read the quoted post. He always removes his cases meaning scratches. So before you quote the obvious hes probably had phones that were gorrilla glass.
I do care about the plastic back getting scratched. This is why I asked the question. I also started to care about the screen this is why I have a tempered glass protector this time around. I bought one off of Amazon for 5 bucks and it has been great (Covers the entire screen and has black boarders. I bought another one with the cutouts but didn't like it as much.).
You're right, I did not use a screen protector on my other phones with Gorilla Glass (Oneplus 5T, Nexus 6p). I haven't had a plastic phone in a long time so I'm just curious about scratches...if anyone has any.

Thanks. I got both. I'm still curious how bad the real life scratches look. Anyone not using a case or skin and has scratches, I would love to see pictures. I couldn't find any scratch test videos on youtube so this is why I'm asking.
If no one has any, no biggie. This thread can be deleted.
Oh no, not much activity around here, if the thread got deleted that would significantly reduce the total body of knowledge in the 3a sub sections of the forum!

I didnt want to use a case with this as i actually enjoy the feel of the phone and think its pretty premium! Unfortunately it did slide out of my pocket getting out of the car early on and landed on concrete. The screen has no marks and held up well however on the side there were two small chips of the plastic that annoy my ocd brain but to be honest they have smoothed out over time and made it easier for me to accept there may be other small imperfections over time.
Im generally careful with the phone but its not gained any scratches on the plastic body since bought at launch :good:
Im very impressed with it and its the first phone in a long time ive enjoyed using.
I did try a Spigen clear case but it felt horrible to me so i only use it for nights out etc when i may be less careful.
Hope this helps!
the first 3A XL I purchased from Best buy, I did not have a case on it. I own the phone for about a week before returning it and I did somehow chip off some of the black on the back of the case. When it was not in my pocket it was in my hand being used. I never dropped this device, but somehow it seemed like some of the paint just flaked off. I returned it because the warranty through Best buy was bogus and I bought the device through my carrier, Google Fi. I've used this device for almost 2 weeks with no case and no problems so far. I just put a rhino shield case on it.
My original defected Pixel, just a few weeks without a case or screen protector looked horrible.. I never dropped it on the ground, but just falling from the dash to the floor of truck, it took a beating.. First phone I had that scratched as easy as this one.. Now new phone, has a case, and screen protector.

Every Pixel I've ever seen has that paint chipping problem. I've seen it on every number. Personally bought a Pixel XL OG last summer to use for a month or 2 and the back was so chipped I genuinely thought that it had been roughed up or something. Nope just ****ty paint chipped off from being hot and the metal showing behind it. Most likey from being in case. So far hasn't happened to my 3A yet.
This is plastic not metal. Grab a dbrand or xtremeskin and put in a tpu case should be fine
had my glass screen protector crack on edge from something pressed against it, tool in my pocket with phone. the plastic body has a slight nick on the edge by the display. No crack on the actual display itself. I'm happy.

Samsung G20 S is an amazing phone and more delicate than eggs

I decided to switch carriers and try a new smart phone and went with Tmobile and a Galaxy 20S. I was surprised on how slim and light the phone is upon picking it up. The retail store did not have any cases I liked so I ordered a case off Amazon and decided to not take my phone out of the house until I had a case for it. Well......
I had my phone for about 4 days using it in the house. My phone was sitting on the arm rest of my couch and slid off , dropped and landed on the laminate floor. A fall of less than 20". The rear glass cover is cracked on opposite corner edges.
My phone and camera work fine but I am simply amazed at how fragile the 20S is or maybe its just my 20S. I have no idea if its a factory defect and I have never seen anything like it. Its really more fragile than an egg. If the phone is this delicate it should come WITH some type of case or more durable gorilla glass. I am 57 years old and owned several brands of smart phones ( coming from an LG V30) and I have never dropped or broken a phone before in my life. Be aware my cracked 20S could be a fluke or a sign of a bigger issue. Now I need to find a place to replace mt rear cover.
The Galaxy 20 S needs a GOOD case so be advised if you have one be darn careful with it. The quality of the phone ( use) is excellent , its the durability issue that makes me concerned. If a laminate floor cracked the rear glass a drop on concrete will likely kill the phone. Pretty sad for a device that costs a grand or more.
Depends on which angle your phone falls, it is just glass. Gorilla glass is anti scratch but not anti crack.
Also the phone comes with a case, it's in the box and I will recommend you use it while waiting for the better one you ordered on Amazon to arrive.
Glass is glass and glass will break.

Just got to be careful of where you put and how you handle it.
I haven't dropped or broken a phone or misplaced one in 12 years.
Mainly because i see the item as $$$ and to get $$$ took me months of hard work.
It's WAY more break prone than other phones.
Watch and wait . Great phone for function and features, build durability is iffy at best,IMHO.
If you spend over a thousand dollars for a phone in this day and age a good case is mandatory. Otherwise you are just playing Russian Roulette and sooner or later it's gonna fall on the floor. I love the OtterBox cases. I had the commuter for many years for the S7 edge and Note 8. When I got the Ultra 512 gb I want with the Defender Pro and glad I did. First day I got the phone it was knocked off the kitchen table at work and landed on a concrete floor. Not even a scratch. So you can either wait for your beautiful caseless phone to shatter when you have an oooops moment or you can invest in a top quality case.
Everyone, well most of us, have heard the expression you cannot have your cake and eat it too!
This applies well to our beloved smart phones.
You can have something durable in its creaky, plasticky, feels like a piece of s4!+ design and all (Blackberry anyone?) that can be kicked, tossed, dropped, etc. Doesn't need a case at all.
Or the latest designs that are thin, glass on front and back with metal trim that feel like quality in hand with no squeaks or twists when handled. But if you drop them without a case you will regret it! Even if the glass doesn't chip or break there will be nicks/scratches in the bezel/frame that gets the best of the OCD types.
So now we have cases that are essentially mandatory to everyone that has to carry their devices around. The best cases combine looks/feel while offering adequate protection and then some are purely based on protective qualities alone that make our phones feel like bricks!
I do like thin cases like Pitaka but also will use something with a bit more protection if I'm running around outdoors or up in the air (tower/ladder/tree) etc. I used to use a rigid holster that would fit a specific case but gave up on those due to having to buy so many. And they didn't actually protect the screen as well as you'd think. I use a pouch now with a clip for belt and has a loop that my Grip6 belt can pass through making it utterly impossible to lose the pouch with phone safely inside.
The only thing I haven't figured out is how to make a case puppy teeth proof!
Irony :
Designing something for great looks and feel.
Has to be put in a case that wipes out the looks and feel.
Don't get me wrong, I do love the phone but it really is delicate. Sometimes adding thicker glass or raised impact frame is better for function and longevity.
This is the 1st smart phone I have damaged from a very minimal drop. The plus version I think has a raised camera module that takes a beating from setting it down on a flat surface. I almost selected that one for the bigger battery and glad I got the S20. The S20 will be a money maker for repair shops.

The Ultra has a raised camera lens too, but the silcone case im using is just right enough to make it flush so theres no problem with putting it down for me.
Damage the front glass, display or camera module and a $109 rear cover will be a bargain.

If it's flush, it would still come into contact with any surface you placed it on. I'm having a hell of a time finding a case that maintains a thin profile but has raised edges along the camera so that it can be recessed. In the meantime I use a little tempered glass protector back there. But it sucks cause it smudges easily and isn't as easy to clean. The search continues.

Question Does anyone crack their back glass once a week like I do?

I've gotta ask, does anyone crack their rear glass constantly? It doesn't matter case, no case, I order a new back glass every Friday because I crack mine once a week. I'm not being rough or even dropping it. I still have my original screen and I've owned the phone almost a year!!! It's freakin ridiculous! I love the phone, but what's up with this paper mache' rear glass?
Hi you do something wrong I assume
Never cracked the backglas once
The spigen cover is well made and not too thick, dropped the phone several times nothing happened
Greetings
Ha...same as you. I'm pretty good handling my stuff but I have cracked mine 3 times. I always have a case on and it doesn't matter. I'm getting good at replacing it.
Aftermarket glass for most phones is just ordinary glass, thus quite easy to shatter. Either get a case or find original glass (salvaged from dead phone). Sometimes you can find even plastic aftermarket "glass" (makes phone lighter and back-shatter-free, but looks like meh).
I use spigen rugged case. I have never cracked any glass while spigen is on, any phone. Hundreds of drops across multiple devices. I finally cracked a 7TP5G screen when I took the case off to fit my Gamesir F4 Falcon triggers. They don't fit over cases. Instead of playing without a case again, I trimmed plastic out of the triggers to make it fit the phone with a case. So far I've been lucky. No breaks yet
What cases are you using? Are you getting new glass from OnePlus or aftermarket?
I use bundled case, no cracks so far, 1 year and 2 months. Great case.
Ive got a Ringke case and ive used factory and aftermrket. Like i said, Ive never cracked the front, never dropped it for that matter, this happens in my front pocket, layingit on the table, its happened a bunch of different ways.
Using Supcase and never had any issues....
Using ringke x fusion case, never had an issue.
Which case are you using?
Weird, since there is one other guy that experiences the same problem, I know its not just me. I guess we'll see if anyone else is experiencing it.

You use the factory seal?
Is the frame straight and level?
Any pressure points?

I've been an auto collision tech for 37 years, so fixing stuff is my thing. I've checked numerous times, it is straight and level. The glass comes as a single piece with the 2-sided tape already applied. It's not rocket science, razor blade to remove the old one, clean up any tape residue, line it up and lay it down. Hell, I've been replacing digitizers since eclair!

I love the phone, but what's up with this paper mache' rear glass?

lol..eclair! I agree it's not like it's that difficult. I'm a little OCD so I know it's being but on straight.
well i have tried to be more careful with these phones since I know there is glass on the back etc. unlike the V20's we used to run. Those were pretty freakin rock solid with UAG cases on them and I've been a UAG bigot for years. But a review I saw on flimflamazon of a UAG case for the Oneplus 9 Pro showed the phone it was in cracked all to shizz from dropping it and a horror story to go along with, so I didn't bother with a UAG. Tried one other that looked heavy duty, a 2-piece snap together puzzle piece thing but it was a joke.
Ultimately settled on a Spigen Tough Armor. It is not a heavy as the UAG's I used to use but it works well and thus far, about 8 months into these phones, it has protected my phone well. Including a couple of drops. It also works with the OnePlus 50W Warp wireless charger, although I do sometimes "lose connection" (blinks red til you remove and replace) on mine. My wife's with same case doesn't ever do that on her Warp charger. *shrug*
EDIT PS: This case also works very well with the Whitestone tempered glass screen protector kit
I just got another replacement glass Friday, put it on yesterday, woke up this morning and by the time I was about to get on my motorcycle to leave for work my back glass was cracked AGAIN!

Probably excessive frame flexing*. This doesn't seem to be a problem for most users (Google search it). Maybe a defect in the frame or replacement parts...
I never carry or place my N10+ in my front or rear pockets! I use the thigh cargo pocket in my bdu pants instead. No damage in over 3 years and it doesn't fall out. Vest pockets can work but more it's likely to fall out.
*it's also possible that something internally isn't fasten to specs. This includes the battery. Maybe missing adhesive pads, glue, screws... something.

Sounds like someone casted dark magic on your phone. Could be possessed too. Better call an exorcist.
I'm starting to think it's a temperature thing, like with the nexus 4. I didn't touch my phone all night, it pretty much cracked on its own. I do believe it's cracking in the same place, I'm gonna order like my 20th rear glass and really check out that area of the phone.
