slippery display - Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Guides, News, & Discussion

hi, my display is a bit slippery, and this makes hard sometimes to tap+hold, as the thumb can easily move a little and the phone consider it a swipe/drag.
Is it just me?

I think it's just you, but I use a matte screen protector and that possibly helps.

Did anybody notice...?

The little plastic bits at each side of the keyboard. I've just noticed them now. They're like the screen protecter film you get on electronic devices. I wonder if they indicate areas of possible wear and tear
Yes ... they are at the rear of the keyboard and on the underside of the screen half as well.
I found with mine that at the back there were a couple of scratches in this plastic indicating that the mechanism was so tight that it did mark. Hard to say what it would be like over time.
Did you check your PM re the screen ?
Also ... can you confirm your tilt is very stiff ... particularly the initial movement ... and that when you push the screen back down, just before it goes flat ... that you get a distinct click like a dislocation ?
Paul.

Paul, I just got mine today and you are right, the tilt is stiff at the initial movement and it also has a click (mechanical) sound just before it goes flat.
as far as scratches are concerned, there are none that i can see.
however, there seems to be a gap between the keys and the screen panel, so there should be no problem in that area pertaining to scratches or friction.
Any sign of that pinched top surface about 1/2" down from the top as the front surface touches the left chrome edge ?

Well if the screen is facing towards me then this is happening on the right side surface. Also the protector on the right side (of the keyboard) is a bit worn out so may be that is the reason.
Do you think removing the protector (from either sides of keyboard) will result in scratches?
I too have a stiff one. Yes, the tilt. And when I tilt it back again it has a click. I think the phone feels strong and well-made. I'm already happy with it.
Gutted that I screwed up putting the screen protector on.

The left-hand plastic managed to get tangled up in the slide mechanism this morning. Was a bit of a mission to get it out but I'm just gonna get rid of that bit. Will leave the right side on for the time being.
Incidentally, the screen protector in the box is very soft and gets marked really easily!

If you remove one, I would remove the other one too. Otherwise on side of the screen will experience more friction, what can't be good for the ballance.
I knew you lot would get all double entendrey with that post. For the record, I've been playing with it lots all over the weekend and it's not got any softer. Still nice and firm.
Don't. Just don't.

How do you rest your phone on the table?

Hey guys, I'm sure most of you have realized that the camera on the evo sticks out like crazy, so how do you rest it on the table? i'm always paranoid I'll mess up the camera
I'm 99% sure the kick stand would solve that dilemma. But hey I'm no genius

I don't want to pull out the kickstand every time I put down my phone, i'm likely just going to get two rubber bumpers to put up near the top corners.
Is it really that big of a pain to deploy the kickstand?

EVERY SINGLE TIME, yes
Not to mention more chance of it getting broken

That what i'd probably do. A very small one.
I kickstand it. It takes half a second to pop it out with my ring finger.
get a full-body case for the phone

That's what I thought. I'm sure I will do the same. The kickstand is aluminum, right? Little chance of breaking it...
Personally I bought a screen protector and set it face down. Everyone wins!
i probably won't kickstand it too often.. all u need is some dumbass to walk by, accidentally hit ur phone and send it flying.. good bye evo
I never kickstand it when I want to set it down. I just put yet on its back and even though the camera glass is touching the table it doesn't have any scratches.

pretty much any case will wolve the problem, honestly, I'm probably going to cut out a circular protector for the glass on the camera, that way i both don't need a case, and I don't have to kickstand it ALL the time(most of the time i probably will just because the kickstand is awesome and i can use it as a clock if needed).
If the covering over the lens is real glass, then scratching will likely not happen. Glass used in these situations is extremely scratch-resistant.
I wont want to pull the stand out every time either. That would get to be a PITA. Im going to look at body gloves also
I saw one of best buy's demo models on dislay in the store and the camera didnt seem to poke out far enough to hit a surface. Of course this is based off of visual estimation. Plus I cant imagine the HTC developers would overlook something like that.
I'd just use the kickstand or put it back in the pocket.
I's just wanna show the kickstand off.. "Yeah, my phone can sit up... Whatever you know I get the best stuff..."

I cut up some pieces of leftover bike tape (the stuff that goes on the handlebars) and made a little box around it, its soft and feels good in your hands, protects the EVO's (strangely unprotected) camera BUT does admittedly make it look a bit ... odd. As odd as it may look, it does completely put my mind at ease about messing up/scratching the lens.
HTC placed a kickstand at the back so you wouldn't worry about things like this. So I guess we should use it for it's intended purpose.

Case for Power/Wake IR button

I find it very difficult to wake the phone with the power/wake button. Just the angle of the bezel and how flush the IR button is makes it much more of a chore compared to any other phone I've used. Does anyone know of a case that can remedy the situation? I don't care if it covers the IR.
I bought the poetic case off amazon (3rd revision) and it doesn't help with the flush power button issue. Since no one responded I'll keep updating as I get more cases. Sad.
I don't know how tough it is to remove the old poetic case (since everyone seem to gush about how difficult it is) but I don't find it very hard. Simply pry open one corner then expand the gap and it pops off pretty easily. I much rather have a tight case than a lose one *wink*
Currently waiting on basal case. Don't know if I should just exchange then phone because of the recessed button.
I came across this:

I have one for my One S, and honestly it's junk. Its hard to put in your pocket because its grippy, and it collects lint constantly.
The rubber inside feels cheap, and loose around the sides where there is no support.

Well thanks for that lool
Here is my remedy for the power button and its awkward position. Never use it. Find a kernel with swipe to wake and then I use a sleep widget on the home screen to sleep. I double tap the bottom of the screen to wake it up. Works perfectly
I got the urban armor gear one off of ebay

Yep the basal case sucks too. I actually flashed cyanogenmod nightlys and use the swipe to unlock feature. Got to swipe all the captivate buttons kinda like iPhone. Unfortunately there is a slight lag but that'll probably get cleared up when more stable releases are out.

That's because it is made of silicone. That's one material I hate... yes, even in the other way.

Hmmm... for the time I'm running CM 10.1, I'm using volume wake and hold menu to lock. I'm sure it saves battery life because the capacitive panel is off when asleep. Plus when I had S2W enabled, it seemed that I could never get it right the first time.
Agreed, I too also had this case on my one s and it's really crappy and too loose in the areas where the hard plastic doesn't wrap the case

The urban armor gear makes the volume button so much better than without it, though the wake button stays the same maybe even abit worse..

sharp edge on side bezels?

Hey there,
just received my phone and i was a little dissapointed how the side of the display feels. Do you guys also have a sharp plastic "bumper" surrounding the display? Especially on the corners it stands out. does not feel very premium.. Already thinking of helping with a cutter knife
Is it only me?

No I removed that allready. Between the glas and the metall frame there is a plastic filling which will work as shock absorber. This is normal. But is feels like it is too high. So I feel it when moving my finger over it as a sharp edge especially on the corners.

Ah ok. Sorry, mate. Mine is perfect with no sharp edges. Just checked. Sounds like dodgy build quality on your particular phone.

very strange. wonder how it even is possible to make quality differences there... would kinda feel stupid sending it back for a reason like that

I cannot imagine there can be such a flaw. Are you sure that its actually sharp?
There is a flat part to the metal before the plastic starts but its perfectly aligned.

On my phone it's exactly the same. The plastic is "sharp".
To be honest i can live with that but it is interesting that most devices don't have this problem.

Really odd. Maybe other just aren't as sensitive as we are..
I know exactly what you are talking about. Between the glass screen and the metal body, there is a plastic gasket that sits ever so slightly above the glass and creates a sharp feeling.
I'm not sensitive, but I do notice it. Especially near the corners. BH

At least good to know I`m not alone. Biggest Problem ist not the feel of it but that this narrow gap which is formed between the glass and the gasket hold dirt easily and looks preety disgusting

Build quality can differ quite "sharply" between devices. I remember when I got the iPhone 4 on release and it had holes in the rubber seal between the screen and bezel. A replacement from the same shop that day had no such issue but had uneven screen placement and light bleed. It happens.
As I see it the problem is not with the gasket but the glas. it is more rounded on the corners.

Do you have very small mini hairs on the screen?

I have 3 very very thin ones on the flexible screen that can only be seen in the backlight, do you have any? Do you see it as a problem?
I have many of them. I have used my fold very carefully, but they keep cumming. I think there will be many more, but i dont care. I dont see them when the screen is on.

Ah, gotcha. Then I have a million of those on my screen from who knows where. At least they don't show up when the screen is on.
I did not notice this until recently on my Fold. Now it seems like I find a new scratch every other day. I just ordered a screen protector for the inside screen. It was recommended in this forum and people have used it without issue. We'll see how it goes, but I don't want it to get scratches all over:
https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/283631210480
I have had my fold exactly one month and the main screen is absolutely pristine, not a mark on it. I Keep the device in the official leather case around the house/ workplace and in a pouch as well when it is in my pocket to keep out any dust or lint.
i think OP needs to specify certain things. we need more context.
are you using a case? or protective sleeve?
are your pockets dirty?
if you don't have a proper protective case, maybe some dust/lint from your pockets migrated into the middle crack while folded, and you then went to use the screen without noticing.
maybe you had left your nails long one day, and happened to get into it in a game or something. gaming tends to make you press harder than you should.
i somehow highly doubt they magically appear from "regular" use.
I don't have any on my screen, you possible got those whilst cleaning the screen with an old cloth.
I'll be surprised if you get hairline scratches by regular use.
