USB C compatibility - HDMI? - Nokia 6.1 (2018) Questions & Answers

Hey everyone,
I recently got a Nokia 6.1 aka 6 (2018) and was curious how good USB-C support is on current gen. Android phones.
So i tried using various USB-C adapters at home and at work to connect to different kinds of periphery in order to figure it out.
What worked for me:
Using my Dell USB-C adapter (DA-200) with Ethernet, HDMI, USB, VGA:
USB: works, can use mouse / usb drive / keyboard / audio interface, the usual USB OTG stuff
HDMI + VGA: not working, tried multiple displays, types of cables
Ethernet: Seems to kind of "work", powers up and LEDs on the interface signal an enabled uplink, however cannot configure the interface without root apparently
Using other various adapters ranging from USB-C to USB / Ethernet / HDMI / card reader to just USB-C to HDMI, i never was able to get HDMI working.
Now, it seems that there is a feature called "DP Alt mode" which i couldn't verify for any of the adapters i tested. It seems that the support for this mode is rather spotty among USB-C adapters.
Looking at the Qualcomm product brief for the 630 SoC, it seems to support "External Displays" and "DisplayPort". In contrast, the only thing the 835 SoC (which is confirmed to work with USB-C to HDMI adapters) lists additionally is "HDMI" support. (however it doesn't even list external display support, which is odd)
So i was wondering, is this what my adapters are missing to get HDMI to work?
And how can i figure out which phones even support video out using USB-C? DP Alt mode is never listed in the specs of any phone, and i don't know if it's in the SoC specs
IMO it is mostly a gimmick to be able to use HDMI with a phone nowadays, as other wireless screen sharing options work just fine for most use-cases, but i'm curious to see how cross-compatible this USB-C hardware is.
EDIT: just found out that apparently, in order to make a phone DP alt mode compatible, it has to support full USB 3.1 over USB-C, which the Nokia 6.1 apparently doesn't, according to spec sheets, it only supports USB 2.0 over USB-C. So i suppose it's not possible by the hardware design of the phone.

Did someone try a MHL adapter. They sometimes work on low spec phones. I sadly misplaced mine

Nokia 6.1 doesn't support wired video output (no MHL, no Alt-DP, no anything else).
The only option is the wireless standard Miracast (or the proprietary Chromecast).

I'm incredibly late to this, and this is one of my first posts, how does one get Miracast working on the Nokia 6.1? For reference I haven't gotten the phone yet (my parents are helping me to afford it and are giving it to me for Christmas).

I have tried usb c to gig ethernet and works automatic, it is based on the AX88179 chip it works in pixelexperience (possibly in the rest of roms)
(I know the topic is old but i leave it as a note)

How about this vod??

[Q] MHL HDMI without using power cable

Hi
I had a look at the MHL wiki;
"Samsung’s Galaxy S III/ Note 2 can power the MHL-HDMI adapter (when used with a non-MHL-compatible-TV). Although this can theoretically also be done with the standard 5-pin micro-USB connector, the Galaxy S III's 11-pin connector is believed to be the first smartphone that supports this functionality"
......does anyone know what this means? Can the Note II output the signal to HDMI without using external power.
We all know that it can connect to a regular HDMI socket but the adapter requires external power.
I know that when using a passive MHL cable it does not require power when connecting to a MHL specific HDMI socket. These cables are quite difficult (and expensive) to get hold of but Kanex does one. Furthermore, only very modern TV sets have a MHL specific HDMI socket.
After reading the wiki......I'm now wondering if the Note II can connect to a regular HDMI using a passive MHL cable without requiring external power.....but the wiki is not clear.
Anyone got any ideas?
I've just bought official S3/Note 2 MHL adapter and it doesn't work without external power source.
HDMI standard requires 4 TMDS wire pairs (R, G, B, CLK) plus additional control signals.
MHL uses a single wire pair for data, on which the R, G, B channels are multiplexed. That pair is shared by the USB OTG connection.
So my understanding is as follows:
In order to use a MHL passive cable, you need to have a MHL-enabled TV, and connect that câble on the MHL compatible HDMI port.
Otherwise, the TV won't recongnize the signals.
Currently most TVs are not MHL-enabled. So you need to use a bridge between the device MHL output port and the HDMI TV input, in order to convert the single multiplexed data pair in the 4 data pairs. And that requires powered.
The Question is why do we need an external power supply, instead of using directly the device power supply...
Too high power consumption ? Technical limitations with MHL v1.0 standard ? or No one would like to try that ? ...
Also, for you reference:
The Kanex cable you mention does only work with those MHL-enabled TV, as stated on the product page.
Samsung offers now a new MHL v2.0 adapter designed for the GS4:
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/ET-H10FAUWESTA
The new feature with that adpater is the fact that you do not need to connect the wall charger to it (unless you would like to charge the phone).
Although that is clearly stated on samsung's site that this adapter is compatible with GS3 and GN2, that is also clearly stated that only the GS4 supports this new capability because of its MHL v2.0 compliance.

I couldn't 100% confirm that, but after some web searches, that has got clear for me now that it is a MHL v1.0 standard limitation.
MHL standard was derived from the HDMI standard, and was intended to allow a mobile device to send audio/video streams to a display device, while the display device can send basic control command to it. In addition, It was made possible to charge the mobile device thanks to the display device power supply.
So obviously, the standard was designed with a power supply provided by the display, not the phone.
And as for non MHL compatible display device, that seems it was not the first priority. Bridging between the phone MHL output and the standard TV HDMI input was a workaround, requiring an external power supply source.
With MHL v2.0, they have enhanced charging capability, and that seems they have covered the "bridging" case.
MHL v2.0 compliant phones (like GS4) should be able to power supply the bridge adapter. That tends to be confirmed by the fact that the new Samsung MHL adapter for the GS4, supporting v2.0 standard, does not require an external power supply if used with the GS4, but needs one if used with the GS3 or GN2.
Has anyone confirmed whether the Galaxy Note 3 will be MHL 2.0 compliant? I would guess yes, especially if the GS4 is already 2.0 compliant, but I just wanted to see if there was a confirmation of this anywhere. I would love to be able to display to HDTV without the need to separately plug in the power, because many times, the power outlet is not within easy reach of a monitor or HDTV.
I guess we will know for sure very shortly!
Confirmed: GN3 will have MHL 2.0, which should mean that we can connect the HDMI cable directly to the adapter without also having to plug in the power adapter. Woo!

We have the Idol 4S WIndows phone in Canada available from MS store (Black Friday Deal 199.99 unlocked).
I have this phone - been using it for the past 2-months.
Continuum docks that work:
Wavlink WL-UHP3403-A (can get for 30-40 dollars)
Wavlink WH-UHP3D01G (can get for 100-130 dollars)
I have both of these and I can confirm that they work correctly ... the more expensive one has Gigabit Ethernet in addition to HDMI out 4K support.

Actually I returned it to the Windows store ... I liked the interface - but I didn't really like the limited nature of the apps that are available for it ... really it is too bad - you would think that Microsoft would learn from their mistakes (a la windows RT and CE) ..
The desktop interface without the ability to truly multitask is really, really limiting. So it ended up a bit of a frustrating experience. Oh well - I have moved on .... I currently have the Essential PH-1 ...

The MS Display Dock would work for a USB C device. But, if you don't need KB or mouse, then any device with Wn10 on it will cast. Even an 830 will cast to my TCL Roku tv.
For the HP Elite x3, besides the official dock, I bought an O-shaped USB-C dongle from a brand called Baseus. Doesn't work all the time, especially from power-on/restart; but when it does, it works great. Comes with a Type-C port with PD too, so virtually no port lost.
At the time I bought it, I requested to the store clerk that I would like to test it with my device. Then I did my "magic trick", and she was in awe.

USB-C adapter compatibilities (audio, HDMI, RJ45, sdcard, USB hub, VGA, etc)

Do USB-C HDMI adapters need anything special for the Pixel 2? How about RJ-45, VGA output or USB hubs? I haven't used more than HDMI, USB hubs or sdcard adapters on android phones, but I'm interested in getting RJ-45 (gigabit or 10/100 ethernet) on it, and VGA would be useful at times.
I'm also wondering if many multi-dongles that are oriented for Macbooks would likely be compatible, like this Letouch, Anble CA50013SL, or Anewish. Each company has various adapters and there are tons more by others.
Also, what's the best way to tell if you the Pixel 2 will be charged at the same time? With some multi-adaptors it's obvious, but others it shows an additional USB-C port but doesn't indicate if it'll charge the Pixel 2 instead of just powering the multi-adaptor and its devices.
I'm asking this partly because of the way the Pixel 2 USB-C audio adapter compatibility issuething has played out. (short answer: adapter needs a chip to convert digital audio to analog)
I'm afraid the Pixel 2 does not have HDMI output through the USB-C port. It's missing the necessary technology needed. It's a shame really, we are advancing in technology and expensive products keep having less connectivity options.
I'm not sure about the other adapters, I'd also like to know the answer.
Chromecast to the rescue?
I guess an option would be to run a local router on the Pixel 2 and have a Chromecast attach to it and cast your screen to it. Not fantastic, you'll be without WiFi I believe (even if you have two radios) and unfortunately a hack.
edit: I tried this out and it works pretty well. A slight delay, but for many games it's quite usable.

Hdmi screen mirroring via usb cable not working

Helped a friend buy this. We were watching movies via wireless screen sharing (miracast) and it was OK but kept stuttering and dropping WiFi.
So I suggested getting an hdmi usb-c cable with power charging (4k). I was very surprised when it didn't work! Tried everything including downloading dex to the phone.
Connected the same cable to my s8 plus and it worked beautifully (dex) !
So why not the Samsung a50? Never experienced this on any phone before and have been connecting to TV this way for 10 years.
Need a different /special cable? Or no go on this device and can only do via wireless?
Thx
I haven't ever used HDMI mirroring on a phone but as far as my knowledge of Type-C goes, you need USB 3.1 to support all the alternate modes including HDMI and DisplayPort. The A50 comes with USB 2.0, so there is no possibility of getting Display-Out from the USB port.

thanks for that explanation, I'm guessing this the same reason we can't use type c 3.5mm jacks?
by that respect, pretty much any type c 3.1 can output through hdmi?
Thanks,
Scott
Type-C as a standard is a mess. I don't think you are required to support alternate modes in USB 3.1, so I suppose there are USB 3.1 Type-C devices that still don't output video.
Regarding audio, there is Audio Accessory Mode for Type-C and the concept of active and passive headphones/dongles, so not all dongles will work.
samsung A50 simply doesnt support dex. only s8 s9 s10 and Note 8 9 10.
getting usb c to hdmi wouldnt solve your problem.
there is how ever one possible solution, which is the universal android usb to hdmi cable. it uses ezcast app (same app for wireless). mirroring your phone but wont display netflix etc on your tv.
Samsung A20
So, I know that the A-series doesn't support DeX, but I was hopeful that it might still have the capability to project to a lapdock (like the HP Elite X3 or Nexdock 2) via USB-C and display even crudely (so, not the fully optimized DeX-ified desktop mode, but maybe just a mirror?), ideally allowing for keyboard/touchpad input as well. Basically I'm trying to come up with a solution for my mom whose company is phasing out the laptop she's accustomed to working on in favor of these lousy Samsung A20s, which she's gonna have a lot of trouble seeing and interfacing with on such a tiny screen and without a full keyboard (she's in her 60s). The lapdock thing is the only idea I've been able to come up with (though, it sucks that the A20s don't support DeX), but I'm open to any other suggestions if you think the lapdock route is a dead end. Thanks!

The A50 doesn't support MHL(display out protocol) at all for some reason, which is quite disappointing. At least wireless display casting works well.

Has anyone tried a USB-C hub with the G8? What is supported?

Wondering if we have support for:
RJ-45 Ethernet jack
microsd/SD card readers
HDMI-Out
Extra USB-A ports
An example of the device is here: https://www.amazon.ca/VAVA-Adapter-...b&qid=1563056649&s=gateway&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1
They are advertised for macbook but USB-C is obviously universal so it works with computers and stuff, wondering what kind of support we have on G8 if anyone has one to test.
I thought of this use case, use the HDMI to send to a monitor, and 2 of the usb slots for keyboard and mouse.... turn the G8 into a little laptop. I might order one to try it, in theory it could work but I have my doubts.
I didn't try the video out, but mouse and keyboard work fine through mine.

cool thanks, the video isn't even as important because wifi screen sharing is a thing too
Everything is working on my LG G8s ThinQ like before on my LG V40 ThinQ, LG G7 ThinQ.
The only problem is power drop when you connect multiple devices.
I tried an HDMI screen (it shares your Android screen and hopefully, no lags like with WiFi Screen Sharing), Ethernet connection, Microsoft multimedia keyboard (integrated touchpad on the keyboard), Western Digital My Passport and SanDisk DualDrive.
PS: The only thing I still didn't tried is Netflix via HDMI to USB-C. On my Galaxy S8 I couldn't have the images but well the sound but on my V40 it worked so, I'm wondering if LG isn't implementing Something to make it work. I must ask my manager
I found an adapter...
I was searching for an HDMI to USB-C adapter and tried a UGreen 6-in-1 adapter. It works perfectly. You can hook up your phone charger to the adapter to charge your phone while outputting to the TV/Monitor. It also has 2 USB 3.0 ports and SD/MicroSD slots. I got it to use my AKG Lyra microphone on my phone while making video calls for better audio. I've hooked my TV AND microphone to my phone so I can mount my phone on a stand and use the back (much better) camera for my calls. I use the TV to monitor the video. It works great! Search Amazon for " UGREEN USB C Hub 6 in 1 Type C to HDMI 4K " to find (I paid $25US). (New to xda and haven't posted enough to post links)
Hope this helps!

Useful informations! I was thinking about one of those things, just to try out some kind of desktop mode when/IF it will be available on LG G8s, and a simple usb-c to hdmi seems to me too limiting as melvinmajor pointed out before (power drop).
