Hello everybody,
here in a nutshell some points which have to be considered when unlocking a bootloader. Apparently Google has rolled out a PlayServices update in the background, which detects the UNLOCK status of the bootloader on devices running S-ON.
This leads to some unpleasant, unwelcome side effects. Running
S-ON/unlocked: device shows uncertified in PlayStore and CTS SafetyNet Check fails, Widevine DRM shows L3
S-ON/(re-)locked: device shows certified in PlayStore and CTS SafetyNet Check passes, Widevine DRM shows L1
S-OFF/unlocked: device shows certified in PlayStore, (CTS SafetyNet Check passes to be tested) , Widevine DRM shows L1
Something new seems to have crawled into the cts check equation!
This prevents the installation of applications such as Netflix, SnapChat, SkyGo and many more. So be aware of this in any case BEFORE a bootloader unlock!
Greetings

[GUIDE] HTC U12+ (IME) - Lock bootloader
Further more the procedure changed, of how to relock your bootloader. The old command fastboot oem relock doens't work any longer. Instead you now have to do the followig:
How-To lock Bootloader on the HTC U12+
Reboot to bootloader
Navigate to "Reboot to dowload" using Vol+
Press Power to confirm
Open up a command prompt, and use the following comand to lock your bootloader
Code:
fastboot oem lock

Hmm, I did get uncertified, but cleared data on the Play Store and I am certified still a few days later.
Playstore 10.7.18

For me I had to remove root entirely, everything was crashing nonstop. Bootloader is still unlocked, but playstore looks to be working ok.

I had CTS error but after I flashed Magisk directly over MagiskManager SafteyNet was passed.
but i also made a module that changed /etc/permissions/privapp-permissions-google.xml where I quote(?) [<!-- <permission name="android.permission.READ_OEM_UNLOCK_STATE"/> -->

I am not a developer. if I do something wrong then only on my own device.
I would wait if someone with knowledge like 5m4r7ph0n36uru says it is ok.
then I could send it to you.
maybe it is useless

Makes sense, thanks.

Hello. Netflix can be fixed by downloading the working and compatible alternative application from apk mirror. If you have more problems and you get the error message after starting netflix, you can try to fix it like this:
1.With any root explorer delete/rename liboemcrypto.so inside /system/lib
2.Delete data of netflix app
3.Open and login in Netflix app
4.Enjoy Netflix in your Rooted phone
I hope soon arrive a bit of serious modding, to have a little fun with this device !!!

I'm not talking about a device running Magisk. This is all about a simple bootloader unlock with nothing else done and tinkered.

I unlocked and added Magisk with Hide enabled for Play Store, Face Unlock and could never get Face Unlock to work again (grayed out).
So I RUU'ed back to stock without reloading Magisk but just keeping Bootloader unlocked and I am unable to see Netflix in Playstore.
I also can't add/confirm my credit card in G Pay with just having the Bootloader unlocked and no Magisk with Hide.

Yes that's exactly what I meant. Just unlocking the bootloader returns a devices failing SafetyNet Test, and not showing such Apps as e.g. Netflix on PlayStore any longer. Seems to be some new security routines on our device, which will make tinkering even less affordable. Unless you're running Magisk you'll now have to search for working App versions on site like apk mirror, and won't be able to use such things like Google Pay any longer.

PlayService Update has effect on all bootloader unlocked devices
Played a little bit more with my HTC U12+, as well as with my HTC U11. Reverted the latter one to full stock due to the update that's going to be roled out according to LlabtooFeR. Google definitely changed something with its last PlayServices update. Both devices - the U12+ as well as the U11 - gave me the following results:
Full Stock & bootlader unlocked > PlayStore uncertified, SafetyNet failes
Full Stock & bootlader (re)locked > PlayStore certified, SafetyNet passes
In case of number one, App like e.g.
Netflix
SnapChat
SkyGo
...
are not displayed on PlayStore, or work at most by installing a modified apk.
Guess we got to hope for a Magisk solution allowing to hide bootloader unlock an still keep us enable to update the devices by official OTAs. Still it is becoming more complicated to use a modified device with every new update, as Google seems to want to lock everything down, as Apple already does.

Well at least there is always* sideloading

Same. Rooted with newest magisk 16.6 and I can seemingly run everything fine including snapchat. The only app I dont see in app store is Netflix, everything else like snapchat, hulu, etc shows correctly. No issues besides that since rooting on day 1 of delivery.
I know luckyp*tcher is a 4 letter word around here but would that affect it?

WOW! That's just awesome!
Certainly I'll use this when my X Play arrives
Did anyone try this nifty tool yet? Looks promising!
that looks amazing, can anyone confirm it's working? I'm getting the XT1563 version soon
working flawlessly. thanks
Seems really promising! I am having a slight issue however.
After unlucking the bootloader succesfully, when i proceed to flash twrp, it says success. However, when I boot into recovery, i get the classic "Resting Android robot" saying "No Command"

after installing custom recovery using tool-kit and directly reboot to recovery from fastboot menu, then mount system and rename the install-recovery.sh :good:
Awesome tool. I just have one question. Is it possible to relock the bootloader without losing root? I unlocked bootloader manually, I boot twrp (not flashed, just boot) and installed SuperSU. So I still have the stock recovery, but I'd like to relock the bootloader without having to lose root.

After rooting my moto battery life has benn reduced. Anyone has this problem too?
Hi guys! Just receive my new moto x play today and want to root it! Its good to go with this tool?!

I've used the tool to unlock the bootloader and flash TWRP. Worked smooth and didn't really have any issues. I did had to flash TWRP twice, but that might have been an error on my part for not looking at my phone after the first flash attempt. SU installed via on screen notifications after booting into recovery, worked like a charm too.
I recommend this tool as it takes away a load of work, especially with the bootloader unlock.
When trying to boot in recovery i got "No Command" while the device is unlocked and i tried to flash new recovery...
EDIT:
You must enable "OEM unlock" after the reboot

Should we wait to see if it is rooted ?

I have in the past setup my new devices, spent hours then somebody finally roots the device.
This usually means wiping the device, unlocking the bootloader, rooting and reinstalling everything again.
It is much easier if the first thing I do is unlock the bootloader and then root.
I then set up my device, and back up everything using Titanium Backup.
What do you do keep using the old device for a few weeks and wait for news and a procedure to unlock the bootloader and root ?

Not even ordering until I am sure that is all in place.
Can anyone buy the pixel for me and send it to me in Zimbabwe, I cannot order it for now.
I'm waiting for a method of gaining root access to be achieved before placing my order. The phone I have now (Nexus 6) still works fine so I'm in no rush. Also, I am kind of interested in seeing what kind of reviews the XL gets anyways. Mainly regarding the volume of the speaker.

You will almost certainly have root access on this device. The bootloader looks to be unlockable unless you get the Verizon branded version.
Remember, root doesn't mean supersu, or even the su binary. Root means the ability to run commands in the superuser context. You will have that at the very least. From there a new solution to give root access to normal android applications may need to be developed, but that is only a matter of time. As long as your bootloader is unlockable, you can build whatever you need into the kernel as a module, or run a service from init (like daemonsu).

That is what I normally do...... unlock the bootloader right out of the box (it wipes the phone then before you set it up) then you have the option to root later on if you like.
ill keep my s7. the phone looks smooth And fluid but i hate the design. its also way overpriced.
How could you wait? Buy it. If for some wild reason we couldn't get root. I'm sure it would still be returnable. If you wait, the phone will already have root and a custom ROM before one ever shows up on your doorstep.lol

I don't do that.... I usually buy Verizon and purposely get at least 3 phones and return them as defective when I dont have root to my own device. Just as a little F-U to them. Then I finally hack my own phone and go with it. But I'll return as many as I can as defective first until they wise up and stop sending them to me.
You simply should not have to pay extra when hardware and software shouldn't be tied together in the first place. Why would I pay extra for an unlocked device that is exactly the same hardware as the locked one.
That is definitely the most immature thing I've heard all week.
You don't like their policies so you are 'showing them'? Give me a break. My 11 year old grew out of that behavior 5 years ago...

Dude its not hard to completely re set your phone quit being lazy I do it like 30 + times in 2 months, and install many themes apps widgets and configurations. I also use Nova launcher back up where you just have to install widget apps etc. But re setting a phone is nothing and do not expect root on this phone. Just google search root pixel phones. Many sources say its going to be impossible. Hope you didnt get it for root purposes. lol

I even already wait 3rd year cause I skip ugliest nexus 6p and now pixel xl which has no unlocked bootloader and no root, and on top of that it has NOT wireless charging AGAIN !!!
I'm incredibly disappointed because Pixel XL seems good even it has HUGE, gigantic bezels on top and bottom.
For now Nexus 6 is the best and hope not the last google phone.

If your software is old enough (Marshmallow) you would be able to s-off with Sunshine without unlocking your bootloader, and then root the device. You'd have to pay $25 for it in that case.
The only other option I can think of is to ask the Sunshine team if they'd be able to manually s-off your phone without wiping it. That would require you to mail them your device (and pay the $25), so it depends on how desperate you are. You'd have to ask them if that's even possible.
Else, not much you can do.

Your bootloader being unlocked is not related to sim/network unlocking. The bootloader was unlocked prior to the s-off process. You can leave it as it is.

No.
So I have gotten TWRP installed and I cannot for the life of me get SuperSU installed. I tried to install Magisk first and it failed or it's on there and does nothing. I have followed a few different videos but for whatever reason I cannot get SUperSu to install. Any ideas? I have tried installing from TWRP and also tried installing from adb sideload both "worked" but no SU Icon and no root?
Solved the Issue, I stopped trying to install SuperSu and did an adb sideload of Magisk and got Root. Thanks guys for all your help

What features stop working when you unlock the bootloader?

From what I have found, SafetyNet and Netflix still work as they would with an unlocked bootloader (at least on LineageOS). Is there any camera or audio functionality missing? Can you still download and watch Netflix/Disney+ content?

Are you using a custom rom or stock? This might be too much to ask but can you install a safetynet testing app (try https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.scottyab.safetynet.sample) and send a screenshot of the results? You can uninstall it after
I went ahead and unlocked the bootloader anyway and Widevine L1 and safetynet basic integrity remain. I forgot to copy the screenshots to my computer before installing LineageOS (oops).
On LineageOS Widevine L1 is still there and Netflix/Disney+ work perfect when downloaded from Aurora Store. I haven't bothered checking safetynet because I'm using MicroG meaning it won't pass anyway.

With a locked bootloader, your only option to get fixed is to try sideloading an OTA - usually, the OTA has to be either the same as what you were most recently running or newer. Click the yellow How To Guide quick filter at the top of the list of threads for one of the root guides. Even though you're not rooting, one or two of them should tell how to sideload an OTA - just ignore things that reference root.
This is why the instructions for the Beta program say you should have an unlocked bootloader, as without an unlocked bootloader your choices to fix the situation are much more limited.

Since I never do the OTA process, I always flash the full firmware zip (which you can't do with a locked bootloader), I can't advise any further than what I said about using the quick filter for the How To Guides. At least one or two of these threads should help you, although they may concentrate on doing so with rooting, as long as you ignore the root parts to the OTA method, you can still follow the instructions. You'll get better help to any questions in one of the threads that give OTA sideload instructions:

much appreciated yes want to avoid root or unlocking the bootloader, why does google have it to make it so difficult to downgrade. Maybe take a leaf out of apple's book
To sideload you need USB debugging enabled. Reboot the device to recovery, either by powering off the device and holding power and volume up, let go of power when the phone vibrates, on the the android with an exclamation mark, tap on volume up I think it is. Or by typing in terminal
Code:
fastboot reboot recovery
since it's stuck in fastboot. In recovery tap on 'apply update from adb'
Then download the ota package from here.
Grab the platform tools (Google for it) and unzip it to c:\platform-tools if you're running windows. Open a terminal in the platform tools folder and type
Code:
adb sideload /path_to_ota.zip
Let it do its thing and you should be up and running. I wouldn't try to downgrade from the a13 beta, but you can try. Good luck!

Just a few things. You don't need USB debugging enabled for OTA updates (you can't boot into Android to enable it anyway).
Just be aware that with OTA's, you can't downgrade - only reinstall the same version or upgrade, so you need to make sure you're on Android 13 to reinstall ota version 13 (recovery mode will tell you your version).
Here's a video to help with the ota update.

I'm having issues trying to downgrade to Andriod 12 from andriod 13 beta 3.
1. I've opted out of Beta
2. Software update notification received
3. Click on download and install
4. After a couple of mins get error message couldn't update 'Installation problem'
The screen remains on the update screen.
What am i doing wrong please help?
Device state: locked
edit:actually now I'm stuck in Fastboot Mode
Phone keeps rebooting back to Fastboot mode

What happened with the OTA updates? Did it complete? Getting the windows driver and fastboot/adb (platform-tools) to all work can be tricky..
what about the https:// flash.android .com/build/8151327?target=raven-user&signed=true Website?

Flash.android uses fastboot, which requires the bootloader to be unlocked. User can't unlock it since Android won't boot..
I don't think I'll be flashing beta version again lol, too much hassle to downgrade.
In the end decided to send in to Google to repair.
I think they will give me a replacement instead of repairing it.
Did anyone notice any major bugs with android 13, can't say I did?

Copy that. Would of probably just been easier to reflash the beta back save everything, unlock the bootloader and then flash android 12

Yup, very easy to flash ota, but op didn't feel comfortable doing it unfortunately.
Might seem dumb but I used the web browser tool and flashed back to stock via that from 13 B3 it unlocks bootloader and flashes and re locks bootloader , back on stable 12 working fine then opted out of 13 beta
The way I did it was downloading the entire firmware from google and then changing the config to remove- w so your data doesn't get wiped. Then running the .su or .bat depending on your is. It worked for me. Cheers
