What versions of Pixel 2 XL can be root - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I want to order Pixel 2 XL from Ebay or Amazon, but I do not know how to choose the version that can be root. Read that Pixel 2 XL verizon cannot be root. Maybe there is a more complete and accurate list of models of this device that are subject to root and unlock bootloader?

You've got the Google and Verizon variants and that's about it. Definitely look for the Google variant if you want to unlock and root it.

And watch when buying it other than directly from Google. The ads on Amazon or Best Buy will say "unlocked". They mean carrier unlocked, not bootloader unlocked. It has to come from Google to be bootloader unlocked, and you need that to root it.

I understand that. What exact information do I need to check with the seller to understand that it is not Verizon? Imei hardly provide all sellers.

If you are buying new, it has to come from the Google store. If used that is going to be hard. The best way would be to have the seller send you a screenshot of the allow OEM unlocking. Its in developer options and will be blue like mine like below. There are resellers on swappa that will know what you are talking about. Private sellers may not know.

An easier method, though it assumes the seller has the box, is to ask if there is a SIM ID barcode on the box. Only Verizon P2XL boxes will have one, and it will be present in addition to the ESIM ID barcode.
If a SIM ID is present do not buy.

[Q] Why is Oem unlocking greyed out?

I got a Google pixel 2 xl from a friend of mine, and I'm trying to unlock the bootloader on the latest 8.1 Ota but no matter what I tried it does not work the option in dev is greyed out I also attempted commands from bootloader itself and still kept saying device already locked... Will I not be able to unlock the bootloader at all? I also factory reset afew times still nothing.
Is it a Verizon or Google device? If it's a Verizon device, then you may be out of luck. From what I've read, the bootloader cannot be unlocked on Verizon devices.

Enable developer options and check if you can turn on OEM unlocking. If you can, it's the Google edition. If you've already unlocked the bootloader using fastboot commands and you haven't installed Magisk, the toggle will be grayed out but it will be stuck in the on position.
AFAIK all Pixels bought outside of the Google online store, including devices bought in Google pop-up stores, are the Verizon version but YMMV

I also had this problem, try a factory reset and without setting a passcode or a fingerprint! That solved it for me
I also disabled the Find my Phone thing from the security settings.

The Google ones don't come with any installed Verizon apps. However, once you plug in a Verizon sim card, then you may get a couple after you reboot.

How to tell between verizon and unlocked without having the actual device

Hi, I currently am using a galaxy s9+ and I don't like it because you have to jump through so many hoops for root. I want to buy a pixel 2 xl used from my area but need unlocked version. How can I tell so I don't buy the wrong one?

Buy it directly from Google is the best way to be sure. Best Buy, Verizon, and most all the other retailers only sell the verizon variant, which means..it's locked down. Swappa isn't bad either for finding an unlockable version :good:
If you have the box, look at the barcodes.
If you see:
SIM ID= LOCKED
ESIM ID = Google version

If you purchased it from eBay, then your in a pickle. I have no idea what their policy is, or if the seller would even consider it. As far as bootloader unlocking it, I'm sure there are some folks that can/will do it for a fee, however, as the saying goes....buyer beware :fingers-crossed:
If "OEM unlocking" is greyed out, that means the bootloader is locked and cannot be unlocked. There is no way to hack a P2XL with locked BL to make it unlockable.
If you bought the P2XL directly from Google Store and you requested the "unlocked" version, then Google sent you the wrong one. Send it back and get the one you purchased.
If you bought it from Verizon store or Best Buy, those devices are *always* bootloader locked (buying directly from Google is the only way to get one with unlockable BL). You could return it but you will pay a restocking fee.
If you bought from an individual, you can try to get your money back. But it will be up to the seller to take it back.
UR Right

Pixel 3a XL - Bestbuy bootloader Unlocked?

Hi,
Anyone with the Best-buy Unlocked version can confirm if the bootloader is Unlocked? Perviously only the Verizon version was available with Bootloader locked, now with this models looks like all the devices will be bootloader unlockeable.
Thanks,
I guess a better question would be what pixel 3a XL have an unlocked bootloader? I am interested in buying one from t-mobile. I would assume the one sold at the google store has an unlocked bootloader.
Thanks for any information.

Per google all pixels are sold at carriers, except Verizon, are the same exact one sold from google store. They only include a sim for the carrier. Meaning they are sim unlocked, bootloader unlockable et ESIM ready. Verizon even on Pixel 3a had the ESIM removed or disabled. again. Do not buy from Verizon.

Each carrier (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint) all have a Pixel variant now so as long as the carrier supports Wi-Fi calling on a BYOD phone it should work for the major carriers.
I'm wondering if the AT&t T-Mobile Sprint very in school out for bootloader unlock or if they're going the same way as Verizon with it not being unlockable I prefer just to buy it from the Google store and get the unlocked one but Best buy has it for $100 cheaper if you activate it through them Even the unlocked one so I don't know how that works.

The Verizon pixels run different software. Just wondering if anyone tried already. I know you can flash certain Samsung phones with stock unlocked rom and it carrier unlocks the phone
Verizon may help you unlock the phone to use on another carrier, if the phone was fully paid off and you have an account in good standing. Try giving them a call and speak with tech support.
However, phones that originated on the Verizon network will never have their bootloader unlocked. They have a different bootloader and signature, regardless of whether you change the carrier.

Claims like this without proof are meaningless.
All that guy does is brag on a bunch of posts that he's able to unlock bootloader on all the pixels and tells everyone else they're stupid. Has never given proof that he's able to. Just ignore or block him.
Plus we don't want to use vulnerabilities to unlock those get patched or open you up for attack. I'm with the others, your SIM method is not the way to go
What if you just want to tether a Verizon Pixel 3.Anyway to do it if you have AT&T unlimited data.I ask this because no root and unlock bootloader method I believe.

Not really the place to discuss this as this is a subforum for the pixel 6 pro. That said boastful people aside, no if it's the verizon version of the 3 then it cannot be bootloader unlocked even if it's on a different network now.

Verizon's bootloaders have been locked for years and years, and there's a great reason no reputable devs are continuing to work on unlocking them, it is not possible.
Unless you're prepared to share exactly how it to unlock a Verizon device's bootloader, and not just "talk" about it, please stop posting misinformation about it being possible.
This thread is about "carrier" unlocking a Verizon device, not unlocking the bootloader.
Please open a GENERAL thread about your opinion on the bootloader being unlockable.
