No Android Pie for Moto G5+ and rest of the G5 series. WIll you still trust Motorola? - Moto G5 Plus Guides, News, & Discussion

Source: https://blog.motorola.com/2018/08/15/baked-android-pie-coming-motorola/
One of the few reasons i buy a Motorola was quick android updates. Motorola actually promised Android Oreo and Android P when it comes out for this phone. 1 year later still there is no specific date for Oreo update. While i unlocked the phone long ago and updated it to 8.1 via custom ROMS i still paid for software support which was included in the phones cost. . If possible we can start a petition on change.org ( Which will be useless as motorola anyway treats their customers as trash) Share your thoughts

Firstly, Motorola is out of its minds. They should first give an update to Oreo and then speak of Pie. Nokia and many other devices that launched long after last year's Moto G series are already running Oreo from months. Lenovo took Motorola from Google and turned it into ****.
Secondly, Motorola said that their devices would get only one major Android update, so I'm fine with it. But what's troubling is the amount of time they're taking for it. Having said this, finally I'd like to add that though Moto devices have suffered on the software side in Lenovo's hands, I didn't find any shortcomings even on nougat and didn't really feel like needing an update. My phone gets all the things done. The only thing that I miss is a 64 bit architecture that'd allow me to gain access to portrait mode on Google camera and make the device future proof, as Google will remove all the 32 bit apps from the play store soon. The only reason I still prefer to buy the Moto devices is the XDA community. But if Moto continues releasing 32 bit os on a 64 bit chipset, then I may as well go for Mi devices because they get excellent XDA support too.

Short Answer: No
Long Answer:
I only ever bought a Moto phone because it was cheap. While I usually don't care for the latest and the greatest in neither software or hardware (still rockin a IPod Touch 4th gen) How Moto is treating it's customers is awful.
I know all about planned obsolescence, but this seems like a new level. Purposely delaying a promised software patch for your flagship until after your new flagship comes out (that conveniently ships with the promised software from the last one, mind you) Then maybe focusing on bringing that software to the old phone. Waiting just long enough to make sure everyone buys the new one.
If you don't believe me, this will probably happen again with the G6/Plus/Z/Z Play. The Android P update will get delayed and delayed until, eventually, a new Android is released. And, surprise, along with it, a new flagship that you will inevitably force people to buy while promising the new software.
It's a circle, people.

Motorola might be a good company before lenovo bought it .. But now OMG ..now i think why in the f****ing hell i chose Lenovo's Motorola ...FFS ...Everything about it's Software side is so **** !!\
So i don't think it's even worth it .. they won't change!!

I have owned and used the Moto G2, G3, G4, and now the G5+. The same complaints have been posted in these forums with every device. Personally, I don't care about upgrades to new versions of Android. As long as my phone performs well, which it does and is reliable, which it is I am content. My G5+ does everything well that I want it to do and then some. So I have no complaints.
As far as what I buy in the future, I will make that decision when the time comes. And yes, I will consider Motorola's latest offerings.

Motorola told us last year the Moto G line will get 1 major OS update.
And Oreo is being tested so just be patient or flash a custom rom.

They never promised Android P for the phone, only Android Oreo

For those saying Lenovo kileed motorola, Google was going to kill Motorola and Lenovo saved it, so stop blaming them, Motorola was a dead company

I wanted a device that was reasonably priced, close to stock, good developer community. I think I got that. So potter's not getting Pie? It wasn't promised, so there's no issue of 'trust' there. Oreo? Well OK that's late as anything. I did know at the time I bought it that Motorola was now slow to update. I bought mine around September last year, and was surprised when it auto-updated to I think the August patch. Since then, software updates have been patchy (pun intended).
Another consideration is in NZ, there's only a handful of open network phones available. Motorola, Oppo, Huawei, and you might find a few others if you're willing to go to parallel import shops etc. So with that in mind, it kinda makes the choice obvious for me. Nokia? In NZ they're network-specific, and on a network that I don't use. So yeah, I'll stick with Motorola. G6 Plus is available for us, which is a good thing. Although, I'll hang onto this for a couple of years, so I'd likely skip the Gen 6 motos.

Is Verizon pushing lollipop yet?

I have seen articles where two people got the update. Some threads show people have it...My phone says i'm up to date. Can I get the official word?
These are reasons Apple is better than Android. They release an update and within a week 80+% of devices in the wild have taken the update. My two year contracts be up on Droid's before I get updated. Really sucks. Not sure why Google can't get the power over the carriers like Apple has.

Let's not start the Apple vs Android thing here but know that Verizon controls it, not Google (nor does Apple control Google..).
I duno if Verizon released the update officially but if they did, it should show on their website. Also, it's usually waves so one guy might get the update and you will the next day.

I'm starting it just sucks is all. Not comparing devices. Makes no sense I'm asking for the latest OS on a device that will be replaced by a newer model in a couple months. You blame Verizon, so I ask how is it that Apple is able to get OS' pushed to their devices the day they release to the public, but Google has a year plus fight to get a release pushed down. Hell, they released 5.1 and I bet less than 50% of their devices in the wild have 5.0

Ok, you do realize that Android is on a crazy amount of different device from different company? The OS needs to be update/adapted to every single variant there is = Takes time! Apple has to deal with their products only, which is much easier. So yeah, therefore pushing updates faster across all Iphones.
Now I do agree with you that it sucks to wait for updates longer than others but you phone is working right, isn't it? And it won't become bad cause a new model was released. Afaik, that new model will be running the same version of android as your device when it gets updated (which should be quite soon if it's not up already).
If you really want instant updates, grab a Nexus, which is Google's line. You'd get the updates just as fast as Iphones get theirs. Oh and it never takes a year for Google to release updates? Unless it's on a very very old device.

Makes sense...I buy new phones as soon as they come out, so the G3s days are numbered, so is my N4.

Why is this phone so slow to receive updates?

I recently got the a520f after a few years with the iPhone. I was happy enough but then released there is 2 roms, 1 in alpha and another which is abandoned then noticed the updates from Samsung are sparse at best.
I'm unlocked in UK and stuck on 6.0.1, they "used" to say unlocked got updates first, noticed the way I said "used to" because carriers seem to be releasing 7.0 before unlocked, and while on the point 7.0 at this stage when Oreo will soon be released, even bringing the phone out with 7.0 would have been slow when 7.1 was available.
I am thinking I have made the wrong decision with the a520, Samsung are slow with updates anyway yes but the a520 seems to be at the bottom of Samsungs list of priorities. Last years a510 even has 7 for a while now.
hi !
Yes ,all people here want updates with another android version but i think that the most important thing is to enjoy with this phone :
it's a device with MM6 have enought power for to play game , it have the best super amoled screen ,it have a fabulous battery life ! , a fingerprints and "near" 20 differents sensors ,he have a good modem and hardware for 4G , this MM + sansung adds have all useful functions and parameters ....and the middle economic mode is impressive for the battery life...
The phone is receiving updates slowly cause the phone has owners all around the world, it's probably to make sure that OTA servers are not overloaded. Imagine what would happen if they released it at the same time for the whole world, the servers couldn't deliver acceptable speeds. That's just my guess though.
Nah, Samsung kinda sucks. I mean they couldnt make a proper working fingerprint sensor on stock MM, had to install nougat for the bloody thing to work.

How does Apple cope then?
That's Samsung decision to release update or not, as user we can wait for it or complaints to Samsung
Sent from my SM-A520F using Tapatalk
It has nothing to do with "the server not able to cope" or anything. There are a few reasons building up to the devices being in literally the bottom of the pile as you put it:
1) Samsung has heavily skinned Android with a lot of added features, which all take a while to port to a new verison.
2) Costs of development, Q/A testing and everything else that needs to be done before the update gets released public (not doing the update obviously means a lot of saved money)
3) Most people don't care about updates or are even annoyed by them and think they are something evil. That's excluding heavy updates to a new version which slow down the phone by a large margin with features you could have lived without (Apple are doing this), those updates really are evil. Due to the lack of updates though, this rarely happens on Android in all fairness.
4) It's a mid range price device
5) Samsung's policy of not wanting to update the phones too much anyway so the user buys a new one
The phone is probably going to be updated to 7.0 within the next month or two. I doubt extremely it will get updated to 8.0.
This is unacceptable for a phone that has come out for 2017, to not got an update of an OS to a version that is released in 2017 just a little over an year later. We should definetly not put up with it and complain to Samsung however, not on XDA.
We should make sure OEM's take note that we want our phones updated to new Android versions fast for at least a few years, just like iOS devices. And on top of complaining, we should vote with our wallets also. That gets the chain moving.

That is tackled in another way. Your phone randomly receive updates in batch.
Yes you can get an update if you manually go into settings and download updates.
But again it is automatically provided in random batches.
Samsung is late at updates because they have a large number of models.
Not like Iphone that only support 3 models of past I think.
Samsung also needs to provide stable updates which take a lot of testing.
Again it depends on your country and provider when the start rolling updates.
By the way A5 got certified for oreo.

Sign This Petition to Motorola

Will Use #nomoremoto, If we do no get consistent and regular updates. #knockknockmoto
We are tired of not getting regular updates on our device. Our oreo has been delayed by eight months. I already switched to iOS as a result and will obviously not going to suggest anyone another Motorola device. after so much of suffering. But, as a small part of the developer community. As a tester. I request Motorola to provide consistent and regular update on Our moto device. We condemn your behaviour over Moto G5 Series and budget device with #nomoremoto, Which means what it says

Yeah lol, couldn't agree more.
lol... Good luck... we tried this with the Moto G3 when it was dropped from the Nougat upgrade path... it went nowhere after 24000+ signers, not even an acknowledgement from Lenovo that the petition existed.
Honestly, I wish you luck but don't get your hopes up... maybe if you can get 50k+ you might get some acknowledgement from Lenovo, but the honest truth is that at this price point most people will just dump it in 18 months and get a new one and all they will remember is that their old Moto worked well... Remember the "regular" consumer doesn't care about upgrades, in fact many dislike them because things change, and if they see 3 or 4 security update per year they think they are good.

Demanding Extended Google Android Support

Android 10 was released on September, Xiaomi said that they will update Mix 3 on October, But looking at the situation it's started getting ridiculous, we're now at the end of February which is 5 month over the schedule and we have got nothing. I don't care if Android 10 is not different from 9, I paid for a flagship and I should get a flagship service, not to mention this is also applies for the Android security patch which is pretty old and last updated on October. Also the forgotten 5G variant which still running on MIUI 10. Is this is a joke? really?? if anyone knows who to contact from the company so we can gather and make a demand on extending our device support since we didn't get anything for a long time.
Xiaomi was a good company I don't know what's happening to it.
Xiaomi release about 37 phones every couple of weeks.
They can't support all of them. They've now scrapped the Mix line completely and it seems they've given up on the users.
My next phone probably won't be a Xiaomi device.
China has received Android 10 on the mix 3 a few weeks ago, only a matter of time before we get it, the virus must be the cause of the delay

No, the virus is just an excuse, this is software development they can work remotely.
There's so many bugs, at least in my experience. Ghost notifications, broken app switcher sometimes, glitchy gallery, disappearing lock screen notifications, the ads in the cleaner app, and so on.
It's so disappointing, all of this on a seemingly orphaned flagship.
Disappearing lock screen notifications is "feature" according to them, kinda make sense but everybody, including me, is used to other way. Ads in Xiaomi app is also a feature, but this one you can change at least, you can do that by going into that apps settings and then find "recommendations" and turn that off..

They may not be able to, it is entirely possible that the company does not allow IP (IE, the code) to be taken off site, or worked on remotely, and depending where the employees are, they may not have access to internet that is reliable and speedy enough to be conducive to remote development. Plus if some of the European news sources are to be believed, the true scale of 2019-nCoV may be 10x higher than what China is actually sharing with the world.
Your chances of getting anything by demanding it unless you are going to try to file a suit in China (good luck) are almost zero. I agree this device is not being treated as a flagship by Xiaomi, the Redmi and Pocophone devices that sold much better got much faster updates, which is not cool. It's also been the case for a while now that the global users are second fiddle to China ROM users.
Basically there's nothing any of us can do, except wait, unless you want to try to develop your own rom, which given what I've personally run into is anything but easy for this device. I was barely able to get Android 10 booting, and lots of things were broken.
Pocophones and Redmis has much higher development in India. Even if the devs in China were affected by CoVid, and halts development, for example the Poco or Pocophone's software dev could still be running in full course. Most of the releases are Indian-first, you just need to change region to India and you'll get the update. For the Mix 3, if they're solely based in China, it'll be affected by the outbreak, release will stagger for more months but you'd still get the update nonetheless, albeit not on the time you expect it would be.
Unless not getting an Android 10 upgrade makes your phone unusable, I don't see the reason why people whine on these types of things. I mean, get a Pixel if you want to experience the latest bugs from Android.
^^ I agree, and also people should have in mind that software for Mix line does not come with all the bugs, that come to Redmi and other phones, so yes, they might get update faster, but see how many users of those phones are complaing about bugs and searching for fixes, as far I could see there are not bugs on this phone. But update is released today, at least some users are reporting that, so we will see if hos it goes, maybe I'm wrong..
Update has been released today, based on Android 10.
Doesn't Google mandate that phones should be supported for 2 or 3 years?
No, this is not AndroidOne program
I'm confused... We do have Android 10. Global has had it for a while.
No update for the 5g.
Shame on you Xiaomi.
This is my last Xiaomi.
I've had Android 10 since 2019 on my Mi Mix 3.

I'm not going to purchase another OnePlus phone. If I wanted ColorOS I'd buy an OPPO. OxygenOS is dead and any claims that the OS lives with the merge of company resources and engineers is just a marketing exercise as it's just Color with an Oxygen theme. Never mind, going to sell my 9 Pro and look at a Pixel I think.

yeah I've been a oneplus user for so many years, I swear one of the best devices I've ever had was my 6T, however, this coloros bs and the clear digression from the principle's that brought so many users to oneplus seemed to have taken a backseat to marketing, greed, and nonsense. for so long I was waiting for oneplus to get their camera hardware right so they could compete with the big names, but while that finally happened, they also simply said, 'f*ck the fanbase and long time users, let's merge with oppo and trash oos'. in short, yeah this 9 pro is my last oneplus, in fact, I won't even be updating to oos (coloros) 12, going to stay on 11.2.10.10 until I eventually get a pixel 6/7pro (I still have a bunch of payments to go on this 9pro), in truth, it's sad, really, that things turned out this way.
Agree man, bye oneplus, it was good knowing u for 3,3t, 5, 6,6t, 7pro and 9 pro.
I don't even have the urge to upgrade my 9 pro to stable 12
bye bye oneplus, and good morning g pixel.
Whats all i can say about all upcoming oneplus releases
It's a shame because we all loved the original ethos of OnePlus; the best unlocked hardware at a cheap price and with a near zero bloat OS. Now that we have multiple mid-tier phones, TV and wearable devices, I'm struggling to understand what OnePlus stands for or even why the brand even exists.
Shame, but same as people there, I will not buy another OnePlus phone.
They were good, because 1) had good stock ROM, close to clean Android without tons of bloatware 2) were cheap also
Nowadays they lost both of this qualities.
This is all very sad. I waited so much 10..pro. And now, reading yours messages, I understand that there is no hope. I started using model 6 and now they are taking away what has been with us for so long. Tell me, is it really supposed to be a Google pixel?I understand that I can buy which one I want, but if I look for an alternative to the departed one plus?
Oneplus really disappointed me this time: 5g has never worked, VoLTE doesn't work, the camera and its software are not up to par with other smartphones of similar price, the latest updates have been a disaster.
After buying my 9 PRO (LE2123) I was so disappointed that I thought countless times "why didn't I buy a Find X3 Pro?"
I'm even thinking about going back to Samsung.
I'm sorry to say this, but oneplus has deeply and perhaps hopelessly disappointed me this time.
Oh, guys. If you only knew what's going on with other devices...
I have had Xiaomi devices for years, last one was Poco F3. The software was disaster. Miui is a disaster.
Now I'm really happy owner of OP9Pro. Everything works. Fast.
People, who want GPixel - please think twice and do homework, there is a lot bugs there too.
I don't like Oxygen Os, now, because is f*cked up by Google...
I like Pixel 6 pro design, but with google Os, it's a NO go !
I like Motorola Edge 20. But horror news (the software will be made with google) ! NO !!!
I might buy OnePlus 10 Pro at the end of spring/start of summer from from sales forums., when the price is going down.
I agree with the general sentiment. Lots of devices coming out in 2020/21 had software/hardware problems. I purchased this phone thinking i'm getting a flagship phone with top notch hardware and dedicated software updates but ended up with just another regular phone like the old galaxy i had. So i'm not hoping anything from any future device that may be coming in the next couple of years.

So we should accept a reduction of quality because other manufacturers are just as bad?
I've seen other OEM's devices and I've done my due diligence. I've owned Google devices in the past and I have no qualms about buying one of their phones again.
OnePlus are currently releasing an updated Android 12 update for Indian and Global devices. Once again, because of GDPR, the EU market is having to wait for this software. OnePlus/OPPO engineers have dropped the ball too many times now and ColorOS is garbage.
I've ran LOS and other ROM's on this device but I've always gone back to using stock with root. OPPO are killing Oxygen and I don't like Color so it's goodbye.
It seems that management are having their say and not accepting what their workers and teams have to say. Whilst the current situation is not ideal we're all living in uncertain times, one thing that history teaches us, is that things can change. I'm not saying that we'll see immediate changes, more that progress is slow and gradual.

My point is that it is so easy to say " F... OP, I'm switching to ....." .
There are problems with others too. So wait is mandatory.
