[REQ] Testing for AOSP on H931/H933 - LG V30 Guides, News, & Discussion

I have brought AOSP to H932 successfully. Now it is time for H931 and H933. For this i need 1 tester for each device.
My requirements for testing Active member, must already have TWRP installed, use Telegram, speaks english and be somewhat tech savvy. I dont want to have to explain how to flash a rom properly.
DO NOT PM ME ASKING TO TEST.
Reply to this thread with your device model number and a brief reason why i should pick you in the following format:
MODEL: <Your model number>
Word: <The 27th + your post number word on this post>
Reason: <Why you want me to pick you>
This will help me gauge your level of following directions.

Ha! But when one person counts the words and answers, won't others just copy that? For different results, not easily copied...
Word = the word in post #1 represented by 27 + their post number. Would be different for each reply.
You're still going to get PMs.

Hey there...
I got a Canadian H933 and would be happy to serve as tester. I got lots of experience with flashing, fastboot, linux etc etc. I also have several other phones so I don't mind using something else as daily driver while testing aosp on the v30.. Let me know if i can be of help.

Which questions?.....oh that! I thought he was joking.
I am not doing of any that. I have been doing tech work on computers and cell phones since the late 90's and I am more than tech savvy enough to follow any tech procedures you need me to man. Also I am a university instructor -- i speak English and can follow directions, logic etc .

Well, i think you just flunked that test:laugh:

Hi,
Awesome news! I'll give it a try.
MODEL: H931(currently running stock us998(20a))
Word: for(27th) Post :8
Reason: I am interested in learning and contributing. I started with the samsung infuse4g(cm7), note 3, moved to 1+1, then v20 & v30. I followed all the directions to getting all the devices mentioned above Bootloader unlocked, Installing recovery, rooting, and providing logs when necessary.
Thanks,

If you can follow my request i might reconsider but for now Not Accepted. My request is there for a reason to see if someone WILL actually follow my directions or if someone is going to go off and do their own thing.

Right so, the point of the questions aren't to test your technical acumen, but to see if you're capable of following directions. You've contradicted your self and have proven you think the rules don't apply to you. To each his own but testing is a privilege and comes at the low low cost of just following the very first direction @me2151 gives you.

Hey gents,
I apologise if my approach to your original request/directions, @me2151, came across as flippant. I reread my post and can see how the tone of my wording could be seen as if it were flippant, mocking etc and again I apologise that was absolutely not my intention. My 10month old was being a handful and it was probably not the best of time for me to be posting. Either way, I understand what you are trying to do re; a quick test of ability to follow directions and I was not mocking it nor was I suggesting that the rules should not apply to me. ( @BrandonB1218). I just don't accept the rules IF one of the rules means i need to pass a test to display my ability to 'follow' directions. I am sorry I just don't want to do that and it is my prerogative and @ BrandonB1218 this expresses no contradicting of any sort; the past 20 years of my 'working' life have been entirely centered around both following and giving directions and I would be more than happy to prove my ability in concreto i.e; coding, flashing compiling whatever else is needed. But @me2151 this is your show man and you can run it as you see fit, and so I am humbly just going to retract my request to be a tester.
Again please accept my apologies, I didn't mean any disrespect. Thanks for working on AOSP -- I am a long-time fan and would love to see it running on our V30 models. I am on my motorola for a couple of days now just to check out some AOSP pie magic but will surely back to my V30 in no time as it's the most trustworthy device I have.

Oh hell yeah. You do this man and you'll have my utmost respect. I'm not willing to test, though I do meet the requirements. I'd like to keep my phone bug free, as I use it quite often, and rely on it being reliable. If we can get a stable AOSP, I'll be happy as a vegan in a field.
Godspeed.

I remember you @me2151 frok the v20 forums glad to see ya here. And no dont own a h931 justyt saying hi.

if this is at least partially what you can work with, maybe not now but on some other point of time, grab me, i'm here
good luck with these two devices! from what i've seen of your work, you will do it :good:

Your comment doesn't even fit in the context of the first post, so what's your point? Your lack of caring in no way outweighs our lack of caring, so I guess we are at an impasse. Conclusion, these are the very same files you will find on the latest linux kernel zImages and modules website

Good. We are all disgusted when people steal things and try to claim them as their own.
Maybe if you said where it came from, how you put it together, or highlighted HOW it's different from other builds that are already posted, we would be MUCH more receptive... But from your first post, it just looks like you stole it and tried to pass it off as something you built. That is just shameful, and will NOT be tolerated on this forum.
I didnt see any claim of ownership, unless the post was edited.
A history of the files and such of course would be helpful. And credit given to those who actually created the files is a no-brainer.
But still, I know XDA is the "big leagues", but cant we be a bit nicer? For all we know, this guy could be the next big thing. Just saying...
he edited his first post saying that he has a working froyo he never said it was his but it looked like it since he hasn't given any credit to whomever that build belongs to
in the OP he said it was not reef's build. He's not taking credit, but he's not giving it either, which is probably what bothered most of the people in this thread.
Only the guilty run like cowards IMO.

Why you get short/one word answers! (The Long Answer)

I wrote this to explain to the new users why they might get what they consider short or bad answers... when really they aren't!
First off, this is meant to be a basic guide for basic understanding, there may be things that are slightly wrong or not completely accurate (to some experts) but this is for BASIC UNDERSTANDING and not meant to bash or flame any ideas, beliefs or operating systems. If anyone wants any more information they will know how to find it.

Why you get short/one word answers!
A lot of users here are sometimes confused, disgruntled or scared off by confusing short -sometimes one word- answers.
I thought i would take some time to explain. And it will take time. For the short story go down to the bottom. Sit back and get ready to understand why you feel you aren't understanding something........
Click to collapse
The Long Answer
This is also a common problem with new users in linux forums. This is no co-incidence! It is not that the more knowlegable members are ignorant, short, or rude. They just speak in quick short answers to help you (help yourself).
Why you get short or one word answers!
Let me start on Linux. I personally am not a user, but i have researched it. It is not for me personally, it does not have the features I need or support some of my fancy hardware. Dont get me wrong, Linux is a Great alternative for many users, beginner or advanced. I would consider installing Ubuntu (built on Linux) for my friends parents or grandparents! And anyone else that likes the way iOS is built but doesn't want Apple. But Linux is LOVED by programmers! Why ? Because its Open Source software.
What is Open Source?
Open source software is written "un-compiled" meaning anyone can "open" up the program, read it, learn how it works, or edit it***
How can you legally edit someones program and use it yourself?
GPL General Public License - the linux kernel and many other things are licenced under this.
Basically it is the opposite of copyright, meaning everything under the licence is free, and can and must be able to be read, edit and be re-used to what ever means the other party wants, as long as what they do is under the GPL as well. So any program that works with GPL software, uses code or ideas from GPL software (no matter how small), shares programming libraries with, ect.... MUST BE FREE and OPEN SOURCE. This can be messy for people that want to make money off certain ideas and software.. But,... its all in the name of freedom. Lets just leave it there.
What does any of this have to do with Android?
Android is built on a Linux derived kernel, most of the code for the famous android kernel came for linux! so.... GPL.... so... Open Source!
**This is why android app developers ask you to "donate to" not "buy" their app.** Its a Google Android / GPL thing.
So why do programmers like Linux and or Open Source?
They like it because they are constantly learning and curious! With Linux or any program/software that runs on/with/for Linux they can learn how it works! Better yet, if they want their program to do that, all they have to do is copy and paste it from where they saw it first, then edit it to their own means.
How programmers think:
Im curious about "X"....
Im going to search for "X" where i think im going to find it
I found it! I like it,
Hmm what is this in here? What is "Y"??
Im going to search for "Y"
NO!?! I ll ask a buddy programmer....
He told me "Z" just... "Z"
Im going to search for "Z"
OH!! that makes sense!!!!
Im going to use that!
See a common trend? Search, learn, search, ask, search, learn, search, ask , search.
Click to collapse
In programming this leads to the thinking, "Why type something again if its already been typed? - I can copy and paste!!!"
Similarly:
In forums and helping others it leads to thinking "Why type something that has already been typed? - If you search "X", you find something that has already been typed and i dont have to copy and paste it or find it for you!!!. " Search this word.....
On top of that, programming code uses many "short forms", "broken words" and "gibberish" that makes a lot of sense when you know what it means. This results in thinking in short terms that mean a lot (to them)!
Closing
As said above its not out of being rude or elitist, its a way of thinking.
-That way of thinking is a part of programming, and leaning anything in that world, you have to learn the way of thinking. >
-Part of the learning to think that way is getting fed up and saying "Im just going to find out myself!!" >
-Then, by the time you learn how to find anything you want to know on your own, you have an epiphany and realize they were telling you "exactly what you needed to hear". They were the Oracle and you are Neo. The Matrix has you, and it was all about the journey!

The short answer as promised!
If they give you one word > search that word. the information is out there already probably many times over!
Why re-write it again for you?
Start with searching the website you are at. (might want to add a second word to help narrow searches EG. for xda would be your device name or OS)
Next search google! - i know its new but it looks promising!

originally posted by kyphur:
I think what a lot of people forget is that this is not a "make my phone neat & kewl" place.
As implied by the name this is technically a Developers forum/community.
Now what does that mean? Well first off it means that there is an expectation that if you are here then you want to customize your device but rather than just installing something that someone packaged you want to understand how it works and maybe even enhance it yourself.
When I first came here with a Blue Angel it was a different environment. PDA Phones were not embraced by the general public because of the expense and complexity (I paid over $400 for my BA). A $400 phone 4 years ago was expensive, today the Tilt is $300 after rebates but with inflation & the rise in the cost of other devices and the fact that there are other sources out there giving them away for $150 our neat bit of kit has become popular with mainstream users.
Now we have a flood of new users who are asking not "How can I do this myself?" but more like "Give me the quick fix" without caring to understand the process. See if you read the threads then you get to experience the learning process, you see how the issues were investigated and confirmed. Then you get to watch the different attempts at resolution and learn why some failed while others worked. That is called Development.
The NooB backlash is coming from users who have walked in the development shoes and is directed mainly at those who don't care for the journey but just want the end result or destination.
As a Development Forum we are just as much (if not more) about the journey. I've read so many comments like "I don't have time to read all of the threads" or "I don't care how it works, just that it does". These very statements are contrary to the heart & soul of XDA-Devs and that is why the backlash is so strong.
Let me be very clear on this: IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT UNDERSTANDING THE JOURNEY THEN YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
XDA-Devs is about developers & hackers helping each other and working together to get the most out of our devices by understanding them better than most.
XDA-Devs is not about helping everyone who wants a "Kewl bit of kit" make their phone better than the guy next to him.
Now do we go kicking users off who never contribute anything, NO. We tolerate it to an extent. Where the toleration ends is when these users start diluting the usefulness of the forum by repeating the same questions over and over again.
You ask us to understand your position. Well if you want to benefit from our experience and time then I think it is only fair that you understand our position.

I had spied that awhile ago. Finally tested it marvelc side; didn't work except for the desensing/resensing. That works from all indications.
I also found an apk on the market I've mentioned a few times that does root/unroot; It's called un-Rooting [and the subtitles are in a language I can't read; but it works marvelc side][anyone care to test it gsm side?]; busybox [installer] also available on market. I've found market apps to be easy advice.
As for gsm'ers only known tool [still] to work is the xtc clip; which is a small hardware device one can order for around $40; Simonsimon34 has the latest s-off guide for marvelc.
Alquez's cwm works on both cdma & gsm
Thought I'd drop mention of these tools again.
Rob
PS I found a really useful market app that was started here on xda.. ZDbox I got to find the thread and thank the developer, but it has battery percentage/status & power-saver, task killer, app uninstaller/management [inc Apps2sd], and System Cleaner [cache & history]. Can replace 4-5 apps with this one. Good good end-user tool.
Another misleading thread. l00k, please ask a mod to delete this.
It's already proven that it doesn't work on GSM phones.
The Wildfire S is already full of information on how to s-off CDMA phones.
There is no need to confuse more people.
I guess I can speak on behalf of all WFS GSM users. Please delete this. PLEASE!
Who created the Super Tool and who posted a thread about it on XDA should first confirm if the information is correct. It DOESN'T work on Wildfire S except CDMA versions.
In case you still didn't get it, this is NOT directed to you. It's a general complaint:
It's incredible that so many people post things just because somebody says it works.
Wouldn't it be smarter to confirm first and post after? I'm not talking about you, l00k.
I'm really tired of reading the same crap over and over again, including the people that almost want to force us to buy a XTC Clip. Some say it isn't rocket science because we can sell it after using... but maybe some people just don't have the time, patience or money to do that. It's easy to talk about ourselves. I guess some people should learn how to walk in other people's shoes.
A simple "Doesn't work on GSM" would of done the trick.

question
Although this thread is a repeat and will get deleted because... well if you read it, its just not what xda is about. Even so, I will ask a gsm'r does this tool seem to perform only zerg-rush, desense and resense like on cdma side? Or does nothing work, differences? It does not work for root cdma side, unroot fails, and the methodology is different so I doubt it would s-off on our side. I will contact the developer to specify partial functionality with WFS but no s-off (upon gsm analysis confirmation). Discuss.

I apologised in my initial post to GSM users but I wont apologise for my reaction to what was in no way a supportive and useful reply from Migualca. In fact its the most annoying thing anyone has ever said to me since joining these forums backl in 2006. Tact is a wonderful thing (jk)
Anyway this was posted to help and I genuinely do hope you guys get your software S-OFF. I've still got my blacklisted wildfire S and would be willing to rip its guts out testing tools like this to help.

I explained why this thread should be removed and also took the opportunity to talk about other annoying habits. I think it's pretty clear I wasn't referring to l00k, so I really don't understand why he replied that way.
It seems that he accepted the general criticism as it was directed only to him.
Thanks to d33ps1x for his support. I try my best to help the community and suddendly I get called a ****...
How about an apology instead?

Guys, sry but pls stop it.
As much as i can see both of you told things that could be spelled another way
Miguelca i know, your pissed (sry for the bad spelling, but i think it hits the point) on, because you thought there finally is a way for gsm users to s-off their device without xtc and you where disappointed once more, but because of this it shouldn't be delteted, it should be marked like others with cdma only. I know it's hard and i also know you done much for the community, but try to be happy for others that they got one more option, i'm sure there will come a way for gsm users finally.
And 100k, sry but your rudness wasn't correct and your really should apology for it, there are other ways to tell such things than such a bad language.
At this point Miguelca is right, you should bring more respect to others, if he tells something that you think it's not true or should be handled another way, express it in a normal way not like you did. It's much more constructive and others can accept it or/and discuss it with you, but like you did they get angry and things get badder not better, so pls be patient next time and tell what you want to tell as smooth as you can.

Don't worry tectas. This is definitely my last post about this bad soap-opera.
l00k doesn't care to reread my first post and doesn't want to admit that there is a part he must have overlooked or misunderstood. Some people want to be always on top, even when they have no arguments and need to use rude language. Just one simple conclusion: l00k wrote 212 posts since September 2006 and got 9 thanks. I'm here since June 2010, wrote 114 posts (before this one) and got 51 thanks.
I rest my case.

I think you are right about not deleting the posts like this and renaming them. If other posts hadn't been deleted (and I did search on the subject before posting) then I would have seen it was cdma only.
Sorry for calling you a **** miguelca it wasn't very nice and I should have elaborated a little more as to why your comment and comments like them annoy me so much. I don't spend much time in the wfs section anymore I saw the article in an rss feed from another android site and thought about you guys. I saw no other posts about the unlock tool so thought i'd share it. Seeing as this site is international and this section is not just about gsm phones it is a valid thread. Try not to jump on people so quickly.
FYI the thanks button hasn't been there since the dawn of time.

I already said that I wouldn't post again about this subject but now I have to.
l00k, thanks for publicly admitting that your comment wasn't very nice and for apologising. I appreciate your gesture.
You didn't explain why I annoyed you so much with my words and that's why I didn't understand the reaction from your side.
Thanks for your intention to help this community and sorry for jumping so quickly on you with a "hard" comment.
As you know a big part of my post wasn't directed to you, but I get the idea...
In the future I will try not to "jump on people" so quickly.
Oh and BTW I know the thanks button isn't available since the beginning.
This was just a way to show you that in general my comments are well accepted and also thanked for. No regrets. Peace.

[RELEASED!] ClockworkMod Recovery 6.0.1.5 for Sprint Optimus G [tethered]

Well, hallo there!
It's been a while since I've posted a release thread on XDA... I've been lurking in the shadows (and on IRC) for quite some time.
Here, I present to you a teaser of things to come:
ClockworkMod Recovery (non-touch) 6.0.1.5 for the Sprint Optimus G.
What is this?
This is a "recovery" for your phone, it allows you to install custom ROMs, back up your phone, fix it when it breaks, and much more.
This specific version is "ClockworkMod", which was created by the CyanogenMod team and Koush.
There are many recovery versions out there, I have picked ClockworkMod because it is very easy to compile and debug.
I will compile other recoveries as time permits.
Click to collapse
Where can I get it?
Please go here to download it: http://downloads.codefi.re/thecubed/lgoptimusg/sprint/recoveries/
Note: this is a "tethered" build of CWM, as you can not flash it. You must use fastboot to boot the image every time you wish to enter recovery.
This is due to the locked bootloader on this device.
This will not allow you to install a custom ROM just yet, and please don't ask for custom ROM dates yet. I'm working on it...
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE DOING ANYTHING!
This is *not* safe, and should *not* be done by anyone unsure of what they are doing.
I will post links once I have ironed out bugs, but I WILL NOT SUPPORT anyone using it to modify their phone.
Please don't use this if you don't know how to LGNPST your phone back from the dead, should you accidentally kill it.

Special thanks to user Shelnutt2 for helping me test this on the Sprint variant.
Here's a pic of it running on his Optimus G:
And, here's a video for extra proof
Luckily the video quality isn't potato, but the audio sure is. My explanation is that my HTC Vivid doesn't like me. An engineer's explanation would be that I was speaking softly, as it was 1:30AM at the time of recording, and the phone merely decided that my meek volume was purely background noise... at least, I think that's what an engineer would say, as I haven't graduated yet.

Here's my favorite section of an XDA post: the "special thanks to" section.
Without the help of these awesome people, I would have nothing of interest to say, and would just be a random guy with a phone.
Seriously, these guys are awesome.
Here's the list (in no special order, and by IRC name):
Shelnutt2
sextape
xboxfanj
jonasl
kmdm
synergy
DeamonFish
chachin
..and Zanzibar (because why not?!)
If I've forgotten anyone, please let me know-- I want to make sure everyone who had a hand in this gets a shout-out.
Please, support these awesome people if you get a chance, or drop by the IRC channel and say hi

Need to get a hold of me, or anybody else? Come on IRC -- just go to http://webchat.freenode.net and use #lg-optimus-g as the channel name. Pick a nice nickname and say Hi
I'm IOMonster on IRC, and if I'm around, just say my name and I'll probably say hi back.

fastboot is the same as with the AT&T varient, aka oem unlock does nothing.
Great work
This is a great start. I can not thank you enough. Like someone mentioned in the petition thread, even if you are not planning to buy this device, please sign the petition for lg to unlock the phone. We need to get a culture of unlocked bootloaders going. Again thanks for the good work
Thanks for the share.. works great.
Does this mean the bootloader is unlock?
Hallowed Is The Sader
At this point no the bootloader is not unlocked though I wish it were I so want this phone but I'm going to wait for a few days and see if they make more progress

Any updates on how it's going? Looking forward to this! Thanks for your hard work!
Y'all know about the quiet before the storm?
It's coming.
Trust me.
If you were in IRC today, you know what I mean. If not, just wait a few days. We've got very exciting news. (Please, no PM's asking what/how/why just yet.)
Extra special thanks to IRC user g33k3r for stepping up and risking his device many times, Shelnutt2 for being awesome, and Vitaligent for an awesome new boardname.
Sprint Optimus G is codenamed the "geehrc", ATT's is the "geeb".
We're changing it.
Sprint is now the "jeebusc" and ATT is the "jeebus".
Expect some XDA silence for a few days while we build new kernels.
Has anyone provided the appropriate files for the LG U+ Korean variant (the device I am posting from)?

You guys are simply the best. Thank you so much for your hard work. I can't wait!
I would definitely be willing to provide the appropriate files for the LG U+ Korean variant. However I have never used IRC. If the OP would be willing to PM me instructions I would do my best to get the files to him.
EDIT: No rush, no pressure. I understand that the US domestic carriers are certainly priority in this endeavor, once OP has everything ironed out, perhaps then he may be interested/ willing to include international carriers/ variants.

Recovery Is posted under the download link. I attempted to reboot tethered into recovery you posted, but fastboot doesn't seem to want to detect my device. Lg drivers are installed and debugging is on, any thoughts?
So, here's a quick update:
We've got lots of work to do. We have a _very_ viable avenue for FULL AOSP compatibility.
Right now, us developers need to sit down and talk about some major changes to the phone-- and plan out a 'disaster recovery' scenario, since this is no longer a 'quick modification' of the system, but a full AOSP conversion.
Without saying too much, we have quite a bit of proof to support our theories, and a member of the development team is now running the first build of Android 4.2 on his/her Optimus G with very few issues.
It suffers from the same issues that the Nexus 4 does-- for instance, benchmarks are ~4500 as opposed to the 7500 that have been reported by members of the community.
At this point in time though, we will be working "behind closed doors" for a few days until we can come up with a workable solution to this, as the current method is very long and convoluted, and will cause confusion with the Sprint version.
Since I'm posting this same reply on both of my threads (sprint and ATT), I'll give the Sprint update here too...
We've run into some issues with the Sprint version, although it is possible that they'll be easily rectified here in the coming days. Suffice it to say though that we have made less progress with the Sprint variant than the ATT variant (oddly enough). However, I've got some ideas (*cough cough* GPT partition trickery) that should fix the issue.
As usual-- PLEASE do not message myself of any of the other developers asking for an ETA. I know y'all are anxious, but if you really need to know, just stop by IRC and listen for a few mins, you'll probably hear us chattering away about hex offsets and load addresses in between me and my coworker tending to b0rked RHEL installs and Juniper firewalls.
In regards to LGNPST, look for a writeup here soon... I know it's been a source of frustration to some of you on the IRC channel, however please don't expect that I have a full 4 hours to devote to teaching commandline basics for Windows.
Once again, much thanks goes out to Shelnutt2, g33k3r, ilkinasr92, and xboxfanj for all the hard work.
Expect updates on XDA as they come, as usual.
Peace!
You guys are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Full AOSP support!?!?!? Wow, i had to wait months on my last phone. I can't wait so excited!!

One you replied and disappointed by a very old post.
Two if you search you will find the root method right here that works on all versions, we don't like to spoon feed , when you have problem or stuck many will help, you ask how to do something that has been asked 100 times and already available, well you asked for it.
Three learn how to ask help, simply writing can someone point me to the root post will make many to post, instead of you writing all this useless crap.
Four simple looking not even searching will made you see these...

no worries mate, I’m not one to be spoon fed. I can handle my queries. I think the dignified way to have done things would have been to post a link with to the proper direction. like this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38886073#post38886073
which is asked 100 time and seen by your eyes you would have know where to send someone instead of posting that humiliating note to the other user. I think it would have taken less energy and would have made a difference instead of being a negative experience to the novice.
by the way that is the link to the root method and instructions on how to do it. and here is the link for the you tube video on how to do it step by step…

I did that because you pointed towards kimitza, now he might not be correct all the time, his answers might be rude, but he is the one answering most of the queries here, plus don't know how many private messages he might be getting.
Think this way, if i talk about me, I'm here for 4 years answering same type of questions for different devices all those years, and i usually jump in the post if some one didn't replied for some time, instead some people will post to every question when they see it, they are bound to get agitated over time.
