S9 worth buying now, or wait? - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

Now that 1+ has screwed over the 6T with an even bigger design. I've been thinking of going for the S9. I held an S8 in my hand last week and the size is just perfect.
But i'm wondering about root. If i'm understanding it correctly, one should buy the exynos version as there's no root for the sd version, right?
Are there downsides to rooting that havne't been fixed yet?

If you want to root then forget about the US Snapdragon version. If done correctly I don't think you would run into many problems with the Exynos phone. I would look through this forum and read the posts that may show any problems you may face. You have to do a bit of wading to get through some but there's some good info here and plenty of help available.

Have a look through the Exynos dev forums

So, S9 doesn't have any DRM features you lose when rooting?
Also, i don't know if the dev community is strong by looking at the dev forums.

I would advise against unless you get some kind of great deal. The phone is decent nothing overley better than anything else, and the US versions are lock down tight, other versions seem to be full of hassles.

I am very impressed with the s9!( Exynos version)
I am facing some issues when running multiple apps together I mean Spotify facebook Instagram messenger snapchat and browsing the same time with 3 tabs there is some lag which is for a few seconds only
i barely see my s9 freeze but it happened
(at least is faster than my old pixel xl- I am never gonna left Samsung for google ..the optimization on a battery is better on my s9 the camera the AMOLED screen and useful futures wich you gonna get on the next Android version on stock )
PS go for it, if you using the phone all day long with heavy tasks take the s9 plus with 6 GB ram is gonna be worth it!

It is very expensive, but i've found deals for around 555$, and that's for the exynos version. SD isn't available here.

Potential convert with some questions...

Sup 'droids...
It's time for a new phone and I'm on the hunt doing research. Such a hard choice! I've had a Galaxy S1, S3 and S5 and loved them all so I went and got the S6 the other day without ever reading about it. When I went to install my ROM of choice I found out that Samsung is now officially releasing only the douche ROM...so I returned it 3 days later.
I read that the 5X was going to be released soon and also read some stuff on the Moto X Play (which is what it's called here in Canada, available at Telus). The 5X seems ok...I could potentially wait a month for that delivery (if Telus even carries it), or I could go get the Play or the G4 today--which seems to be the forerunner at this point due to it having slightly better specs than the Play.
My questions relate to custom ROM experiences. I like to have AOSP support with all the fancy settings available to me! I especially like hardware keys. My S3 was able to turn the flashlight on by holding the home key. I know the G4 doesn't have hardware buttons anymore so I'm not even sure if that's a thing. Maybe volume keys instead? That might create problems with track seeking though. Whatever...as long as there are options lol.
So...what kind of experiences--good and bad--have you guys had with this phone? Is there good ROM support? It seems like M will be out soon...does that mean the code will also be available for developers? I see a few ROM's available but unfortunately I can't test them out because I don't actually have the phone.
I'm sure I'll have more questions but thought I'd get a discussion going for those interested in sharing their experiences.
Thanks.
i'm somehow convinced that when the official android M update from LG finally released, the developer scene would start to bud here and there.
but for now, i think the developers are gathering only in some unlocked bootloader variants...

The play is a midranger with a good battery not comparable with a flagship like the G4. Maybe you were thinking of the Style or Pure as its known in the US.

Not too much at the moment. Just root. To use xposed entails risk as there is no recovery. Unless you can source a H815 euro variant of the G4.

I'll be honest, I was about to use my middlefinger to write an aggressive post for you but the intelligent part of my brain said "STOP! THINK!". So I thought...and thought again. Coming from Nexus devices running CM only, on the G4 I have yet to find a reason to even consider a custom ROM. I sometimes miss the pure Android but that's all about it. It's the first time since my Nokia E72 in 2007 I did not switched a ROM for more than a month. Let's see where this goes. Good point mate!

It's too early for the G4 now. Currently only the EU H815 model has an unlockable bootloader. LG's official page says more devices will be added to the list soon, but I wouldn't count on that. Since you're from Canada and propably won't get the H815 on contract, it'd be risky. If I had your patience, I'd wait for the 5X. You seem to be an Android purist. I wouldn't want to deal with a device running a custom version of Android. Also, even if CM or any other AOSP ROM would make its way to the various variants of the G4, they're going to have these little issues here and there because of bad or missing documentation from the manufacturer. It'll be a buggy experience overall. For example, I'm sure the camera will be a mess on CM/AOSP/A

It's great so far. Running vanilla Android was a nice experience but I got bored. Having a custom UI with the option to use a custom vanilla Android is the perfect place for me. But as I said, right now I have no reason to go vanilla.
5X = 32gig no sd
G4 = sd
I can't live with 32gig so G4 fills all my needs. Stock too.
Sent from my LG-H815 using XDA Free mobile app
Thanks for the input guy! I'm glad to hear that the G4 won't have much ROM support for some time--not that I'm glad for the *lack* of support, I'm just happy that I was informed of this *before* I made my purchase lol. There are some things that vanilla doesn't seem to offer me. Some features are not needed (pie and other recent/quick access features, and others I can't even think of cos I never turn them on in my current ROM lol); however, the ability to alter the power menu, the ability to add custom hardware keys (mainly for flashlight; if not a hardware key, then at least a toggle in the tray, or in the power menu), status bar changes (clock, color, battery % in numbers, double-tap for screen off), led control, etc (perhaps all these can be altered with apps or via Xposed. @onetwelve You said above there could be problems with Xposed because there's no recovery. You mean TWRP recovery? You can't mean that, so I'm confused :s).
The lack of camera support would suck. I am by no means a photographer; the main thing I use my camera for are taking random photos and also taking quick snapshots that require a fast-focus to be achieved. It's frustrating when camera apps don't work properly. I think pretty much every camera is going to be good enough for my purposes. 21MP vs 16MP = whoopdeedoo.
SD card support is not a concern for me. I've lived with 16GB for years and it's almost never been a problem unless I record a bunch of videos before I get home. I don't put music on my device (only audiobooks). Getting a 32GB internal memory phone would be like landing in a pot of gold haha!
My buddy has been nagging me to get an iPhone 6 and jailbreak it--he says I'll never turn back...but I'm not sure, I love Android and don't really wanna learn a whole new interface.

There is no custom recovery as in there is none for the G4 variant you most likely will be getting in Canada, as of now. However, there are reports of an unofficial Bootloader unlock method coming for many variants of the G4. It's important to note that in this case you must not take OTA updates or the unofficial unlock method won't work. Anyway, no need to get into detail much.
There's no need for a custom recovery since flash fire is enough to get xposed working.
Btw. Is that a Rick & Morty reference?
Cool, thanks for the info. So it seems even the G4 won't suffice for me ...guess I'll wait for the X5 and see what happens there. I doubt Telus will carry it so I'll have to buy it outright. Support for that is going to be active and functional?

I guess you mean the 5X? In this case, yes, you can expect the great minds of XDA to develop for this device and since the 5X is relatively cheap and people tending towards mid-high-range devices, you can expect a big fellowship in the 5X development section and forum in general.
Nvm, I was referring to the "whoopdeedoo". Realized that "whoopdeedoo" is a very common saying. Just binge-finished Rick & Morty but somehow my brain is still processing the information.
EDIT: A Rick & Morty reference would be like, uh, like "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub", or "Get shwifty" or how much "Schmeckles" does the Moto X cost and so forth. Wait, what?

am not too knowledgable on the xposed side of things. it was an interaction i had with someone on youtube and they said if you do not have access to kdz, then in case of a boot loop you would not be able to recover. since you're in canada and the carriers there are no better than us carriers, xposed might not be an option unless you REALLY know what you're doing. There's these TOT's instead so somebody more knowledgeable can answer.

yeah, vendors keep cameras very close to their chest. Only stock based roms will preserve camera or lets say are more certain to preserve it.
other stuff is going to be buggy or not work too well. this is down to developers so you end up using 3rd party cameras but its not the same as stock when it comes to cameras.
The cameras on the nexii are pretty good from what i've heard. But I would contend that the lack of OIS is an egregious omission when the last two nexii had it. Maddening! why go to the trouble to develop such a good camera and leave it out (!!!)
This means you will have to have a good handhold to avoid blur or camera shake indoors or in low light. But if the light is enough i think you will be happy with the nexus cameras. They really have come a long way since the Nexus 4. In good light i would not be surprised to see them rivaling the S6/G4 in terms of preservation of details. They are that good. But unfortunately thats it.
Btw the nexii are 12MP shooters. Don't let the mega pickles bother you just check out the photos at the pixel level and see for yourself.

thought the whole point of getting an iphone is that there is no need to do jailbreaking. not nowadays anyway. why would you want to jailbreak ios9 ?

How is the LG Dev community? Is LG modder-friendly?

The G6 seems to have a really active dev community. Is that a one off or is that constant? Is it easy to root LG devices? I have a choice between this of the S9+ and I can't decide on what to go for.

I can't speak on behalf of the LG community as of late but the last time I had one, the G4, there was plenty of people wanting to mod/create ROM's but couldn't due to LG's restrictive bootloader unlock nature.
If it means anything, I wouldn't grab the Snapdragon 845 version of the S9+ either. If you want to root/flash ROM's, you need to get the Exynos version of the S9+. I wouldn't, as there is reportedly severe battery issues with the Exynos chipset. Getting root on the S8+ with the Snapdragon version took a very very long time whereas there was virtually no wait for the Exynos version.
I really hope there's some development for the G7!
I think it died after the G4. Just the for traffic alone in these G7 forums, should show that not many are interested in LG anymore. If it weren't for the free phones promo, I prolly wouldn't even get an LG.
The V20 had a pretty nice community for T-Mobile at least and even somewhat still does. The reason I got the Note 8 over the V30 was it had and still currently has root which I need in order to even use a phone to my liking. If the G7 or V40 has a nice root community I might get the V40. However at this point I'm likely just getting a Oneplus 6. As at this point I doubt we'll have root on the Note 9 Snapdragon version or T-Mobile devices as a whole. They used to be really root friendly like Sprint then once they became big they became pretty bad from a customer standpoint. They definitely are better than the other big two but not the carrier I fled to years ago.

This is the damned truth. I wouldn't have purchased the G7 has it not been for the buy one get one free thing..
Use to be the go to dev friendly brand...not anymore. I really wish a mainstream brand would allow for this stuff, but it seems the carriers won.
Seems like OnePlus is the way to go. Or perhaps Xiaomi. None of the mainstream brands unfortunately.

When LG invariably stops supporting this phone 9 months into it's life, and you want to at least have security patches on it....

Still worth buying?

EDIT: Got the answers I needed, bought the phone, we're good! Thanks!
Hi guys and gals! I'm looking at upgrading from my Galaxy S8+ to a Pixel 2 XL. I admit, I used to be a Samsung fanboy, that being the main reason I got an S8+ like a dumb dumb lol. But I've changed! Having seen the leaks of the Pixel 3, implementing that annoying notch, losing the front facing speakers, I'm not impressed with Google's next offering and don't plan on getting it. That being said, the Pixel 2 XL seems to be a great phone. Is it still worth picking up at this point in its life?
Some explanation for my upgrading may be necessary. For those unfamiliar, the Galaxy S8+ is essentially completely locked down unless you have an international model. Being a Canadian with a Canadian model, I have a grand total of ZERO custom ROMs to use. Now, that's particularly irritating, because this is the first phone I've ever had where I've been locked out of modifying my device the way I want to, and that's very important to me. Had I known this was an issue going into it, I never would have gotten an S8+, but I picked it up very shortly after it was released so we didn't quite know about all of this yet.

Thanks for that. Those were pretty good resources for how people feel about the general use. Have you noticed any down sides to rooting or modifying the device? For example, if you root an S8+, for some reason you can't charge it past 80% battery.

No downsides that I have experienced since rooting last November. I can flash roms, kernels, mods, themes. Use TiBu, AdAway, or whatever I like that requires root. My device is still fast, fluid, and works great. My only 2 complaints would be system volume isn't loud enough, and screen full brightness could be better. Other than that, it's a great device :good:
I purchased mine in March from Google.
It's currently running stock and rooted 9.0 and it's outstanding!!
At this point I see no other phone that I would switch to.
I'd buy it again today without hesitation.
It's one of the best phone and camera combination around...

New update for A51 & A71

Samsung has released a new software update bringing a range of leading Galaxy S20 features to the Galaxy A series. Galaxy A51 and A71 device users will now be able to harness some of the Galaxy S20 series’ powerful innovations, designed to make the way we capture, connect and share more dynamic than ever before.
https://news.samsung.com/global/gal...features-thanks-to-the-latest-software-update
Update 14-07-2020: Updated received on my unlocked A71.
It's 1842,98MB
It's brilliant that Samsung keeps updating the A series but honestly (probably besides some security patches) there is nothing interesting in this update
I guess that for pictures and videos pro users already use filmic Pro, open camera or port of Google camera
The rest is just gimmick.

But at the same time I'm not gonna praise all software changes it gets if I don't like it. That's called being a fanboy, buddy.
You seem not to understand what I say. But you can always ask [emoji6]

No it doesn't, more than once I've seen this user say this or that about the phone or the apps in it. Not talking about this thread either.

What? Prove it then. With links to my posts. I honestly can't recall complaining about this phone. No prove means you're just talking rubbish.
I did not complain about the apps, but I admit I complained about system apps not allowed to be removed (those additional from Samsung). But dude this is always the case with all phones besides android one
I will also complain about Samsung not letting the camera to be fully used by 3rd party apps (I can't get 60 fps videos, and when I set 120 fps, the phone records in 3 fps). Do you buddy think it's fair to purchase any thing and not be able to use it however the hell you want? Jeese... But again, very popular practice.
And now - hang on and sit down - other people complain about the latest system update not me - them. I've put on hold the update as I generally don't update anything.

If you put updates don't hold, don't complain when something else doesn't work as intended.

Dude, you don't even ready what I write or you constantly have problems understanding
What I point out is not due to software issues. It is all intended and common amongst manufacturers. Most can be fixed by AOSP (which we don't have) except the camera limitations. That's entirely Samsung.
Anyway, stop talking to me. Seems like you have no clue...

I've seen you complain about system apps and the Google framework in it's entirety, but yeah. Obviously I don't have a clue right? ?
You want an Android One device, buy one. Simple as that.

As for updates , my UK unlocked A71 is still on April 1 update , I know the A 71 will get updates in a " big " lump.. every quarter, but I would prefer incremental updates, rather than a huge update .. if it ever gets here .. i want to to keep stock , romed before ... done it .. hence keep stock

No it was fab , got want I wanted etc.. but I've been there done that, it was good, but took time. hence now just want " out of the box" with nova launcher. It's even helped me get full java games, apps, etc on my Chromebook .
That's why I'm still here, as they say " once you tweak you can never turn back!!"
Being new to Samsung and how they update their devices, how long does it usually take for the update to hit all channels/versions of the phone? I have the Panama version of the A71 and have not yet received the update. Just curious as to what to expect so I don't have to spam the update button throughout the day.

Samsung Galaxy A71 or OnePlus Nord?

I have a Samsung Galaxy A71, it's great and I love it but OnePlus Nord is coming out next month and it costs less than A71. Should I sell my device and get OnePlus Nord? I'll be getting more RAM, storage, 90Hz display and 5G.

I'd pick the A71 over the mi note 10 lite or the nord. Samsung has been very good for the last 4 to 5 years updating their flagship phones and their A series phones.
Less than A71?? Which country do you live in?
Galaxy A71 costs 360€ hier in Holland.
One Plus Nord around 500€
I think One Nord is wayyyy beter than A71 (personal preference)

Why buying an other phone if you "love it" as you say,?
I mean, what features will the other have more (and are you going to use them! ) other than A71?
I came from a 2014 SM-G901F (galaxy S5+) and used Lineage OS on it since 2017 till last month the old microphone gave up, so now i have the A71, i think its great. Also i see developers working on Lineage for this phone already, soon it will be Official downloadable, than tou get ris of all samsung crap too.

And you'll void your Knox for it, so you can kiss good bye to any insurance/warranty you might have, it's not reversible either.
I'm after performance, and I personally think OnePlus Nord will be able to give out performance more than the A71, specially with the upgraded processor.

A71 is 500€ in Portugal, where I live. Nord is around 420€ for the 128/8GB one and 500€ for the 256/12GB one.

Elaborate. My A71 is also covered by insurance so pretty sure tripping Knox will invalidate that. Plus you'll never be able to get on full "virgin" stock because the system will know Knox has been tripped.

Not for what I've been reading. Certain Samsung services will no longer work once Knox is tripped, even with a full flash.

Thats the biggest b.s.i ever heard.
Tripping knox is just tripping it, all things still work except OTA and SAFE MAP and other Samsung pre-installed crap wich you should not use anyway...
If there is a new firmware you flash it in Odin an life goes on as normal.
Don't tell me anything else, im flashing an tripping and knox and root for myself and many other people for years on different Samsung models, never had any problem.
You must have read something of somebody not following the right steps or screwed up other way, and left with a bricked phone.
And even bricked phones don't really exist. In the right hands of somebody knowing what he is doing, all magic comes alive and you have your phone back working.

I'm very experienced when it comes to flashing, rooting and modding in general. I've been doing this for over 10 years so bricking isn't with me. The only thing I'm afraid is for the phone to be marked as "not legit" in the eyes of Samsung or my insurance company this denying me all kinds of warranty/replacement.
Not to mention if I DO decide to sell my device later on, the person who'll buy it will most likely use the Samsung services which won't work after Knox being tripped.
Since you already tripped yours, maybe you can give me a list of what works and what doesn't.

I am also very experienced when it comes to the row of things you mention, that makes it even more hilarious what you wrote before, the thing knox_thing.
Since you are very experienced in the row of things you just mentioned, im not going to put any effort in the list you want me to make, you already know that, dont you? If not, you look in the thread A71 rooting or installing Lineage, there you'll learn.
But you are going to sell it anyway, so why bother.
I leave this thread now, wishing you happy selling.

I'm considering it, doesn't mean I will. No need to have that kind of attitude towards me, why so defensive?
I've been modifying Samsung phones before Knox, the old flash counter thing which was easily reset. I *want" to install Lineage and then move on to a better ROM but I don't want to get back to stock and find out half the system's services don't work. So I kinda want a word from someone who already did it and can explain how it all went but don't worry, hopefully you're not the only one who has modified the A71, I can ask someone else.

Edit: Mods, do you think you can take a look at this?
I'm noticing that the posting in this thread is becoming more and more aggressive. Everyone please calm down and only post if you've got something productive to add to the topic at hand.
No cleaning of the thread has been done this time, but that doesn't mean I won't come back and take actions if things keep escalating (suddenly I feel like a parent of small bickering children, shouting from the other room: "don't make me come in there").
Have a good day everyone.

Im just posting on things you write. If you can't stand comment, don't post.
Once you are on lineage, you will never get the Samsung **** working again, since you tripped knox.
Stick to your plan, sell it and forget all about it or ask / search in the other threads i mentioned before.
For me, this conversation finish here today, i disable subscription so i give you my best wishes. Bye
Without a doubt Oneplus Nord is the champ
A71's cameras are better than the Nord, and it has a bigger battery. So if you're after camera quality and phone battery life the A71 wins. If you want 90 Hz and faster charging (25W vs 30W) the Nord wins. If you want a pill-shaped hole on your screen, go for the Nord, if not go Samsung. If you don't want to support China go Samsung (ended phone production in 2019), if you don't care for that go for the Nord.
The 765G and 730G chips differences are meh (My unit comes with the 730G variant with 8 GB ram) so not really an upgrade in real life and even gaming.
In the end, it's up to what your priorities are. Choose what makes you happy.
I live in Peru, Oneplus nord won't come officially, but you can get it for arround 630 Usd, the A71 is arround 480 usd, also, people is almost ignoring samsung devices here, most people love xiaomi like they never before, you can get a mi note 10 lite for arround 400, with almost the same features as the samsung a71
Nord doesn't have a dedicated MicroSD slot. To me, that alone makes the A71 the winner. There is also the atrocious OnePlus (lack of) warranty, the OxygenOS bugs and whatnot. You need to root for call record on OnePlus too. It's just all kinda meh. If it'd be at least on par with the A71 (microSD slot), I'd say go for it. But this way? I don't know.
Also, not every 1+ devices are well supported in terms of XDA development. For example, the 7T barely received any development.
Ps.: I'm not trying to hate on OnePlus. But honestly, the current range is pretty meh. There is the 7T. No development. The 8. Has curved edge, costs almost as much as the 8 Pro. So you might as well just buy the 8 Pro. But it has black crush issue, burn in problems and so many other problems. And it costs 1000$ - and some more. I don't know man.
