Verizon note 8 carrier switching - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions & Answers

So I have the S8 from cricket wireless and I got my unlock code from them and tried my son's straighttalk (on Verizon towers) Sim card and it reboots to a blue screen with a Sim card icon then reboots and then I get the TracFone splash screen. I put my cricket Sim back in and the same thing happens but it's back to the cricket splash screen.
My wife has a Verizon branded note 8 on cricket but no cricket splash screen (just the Verizon splash screen). Is there still a need for an unlock code to enable the Sim switching management feature on this phone?
And I do know that she doesn't have any CDMA options under network type and my options became only cmda optios with the straighttalk sim ( as they change with the Sim), but I want to have her phone either show the cricket(AIO) splash. And it doesn't show the blue sim change screen when switching to a different sim/carrier. Any thoughts????
Thanks in advance.

I've been on Verizon for a long time. Over the years there has been a couple times I've had to use other sim cards from other phones for one reason or another. I cant remember what phones they were but mine was either the note 4 or the 8 im on now. It wasnt to long ago I used a buddies Free Obama Phone (Some off brand never heard of before and cant remember what it was) but it worked no problem. Not long before that I did the same thing with someones prepaid and it worked fine. I have never been able to use my Verizon sim in any other phone. I dont know much about all that stuff but I do know i've tried several time and never been able to use my verizon sim in any other phone. Not sure if that helps or not but seemed like it was kinda up your alley with what your talking about.

Few things here...
The splash screen is correct in the forst part as it will change while it changes over to what carrier the sim is based on with the S8.
As for the Verizon branded Note 8, itwill continue showing the Verizon splash screen regardless of what carrier you switch to. The only way to change this is to flash the firmware and change the carrier for it. Flashing my Verizon note 8 from Verizon to ATT now shows the ATT splash screen. Cricket branded firmware is not available for Note series since they don't sell them, best you can get is ATT. The Cricket branded splash screen does not exist for this model as Cricket does not sell the Note series in store. (They only sell the LG Stylo Series, I'm a manager and as much s I have tried they never will according to them. )

Yeah, I've been a district manager for an LLC DBA cricket wireless, had 8 stores under me. I figured as much on them never selling a note, and we do not like the stylos, but it just would seem to reason that the Verizon Note 8 is not fully unlocked because even with a straight talk SIM card in it it does not change the boot logo. Maybe I need to try an AT&t SIM in it? I'll do that tonight and let you know the results.

The Verizon Note 8s boot logo splash screen doesn't just change when you put a different carrier sim card in it.. You actually have to flash that carriers firmware in order for the boot logo splash screen to match. I don't really think it makes a difference though it's just a splash screen after all lol..

So why is it that an at&t, T-Mobile, & Sprint note 8 will change splash screens and menu options along with the build.prop File, but a Verizon nite 8 won't? What's the deal here, is Verizon paying Samsung extra to not allow these changes?

Actually, I would like to argue this point with you. Two days ago, I unlocked my stock AT&T Note8 and went to switch it to Verizon. When they inserted an activated SIM from one of their demo devices mine did exactly what this person has earlier described. It rebooted into a blue screen with a SIM graphic and a rotating gear. After this it rebooted again with a Verizon splash and then started to download Verizon bloatware and a few system files based on the download dialog that was in the notification panel. Even the settings were different. At first it wouldn't make calls of connect fully to data but in time it started to allow phone calls. While it switched between 3G, 1X, and 4G it would never actually move data using Verizon's cellular network. It would download through WiFi. The exception to this was the fact that is WOULD download the Verizon system files and applications. While I would normally agree that you would need to flash the carrier ROM, I saw this myself! Neither the stores technician as well as myself couldn't figure the thing out using just the device itself. My assumption is the same as that mentioned earlier in the post and there is another level of locking going on which may need another code to unlock. At any rate, I now have a Note9 and my first months bill paid thanks to trading in the old Note8, LOL!

I was told that it does that when the phone is network unlocked, Verizon Note 8 is probably branded to their network. Galaxy S8 does the same thing

Gone are the days of sim swapping???

This is more of a general ATT thread, but it does relate to my note 4.....
I have a one plus one, and my note 4 and from day to day I want the flexibilty to swap phones as I see fit. It used to be move the sim, and you're good. Lately, I've see issues when I moved my sim from phone to phone.
The first was last week, I bought an alpha clone off of craigslist and voice would work, but data would not. I dropped it back into my one plus one, and same thing, no data. Went to an ATT store, and they did an IMEI swap on my account and all was well in the world. Years ago, the IMEI swap on the carrier system kinda just followed the phones and wasnt ever an 'official' thing...but now it seems it is. Any ideas on this, can I swap my IMEI online with ATT?
Obviously I did a search on it, and it takes me to the ATT website, but it looks more along the lines of swapping when you've made an official order, not just because you want to. Am I missing something?
Change the sim card. When I went from my g2 to a nexus 5 I swapped the sim when I got the nexus 5 in the mail and data wasn't working ect. I go down to the AT&T store and talk to the same girl who's actually on the ball there and we found out that if you have an ICIS sim card it won't work on phones they don't sell. Just get a generic lte sim and see if that fixes it. Good luck!
The Sims that are blue are lte Sims don't get the ones that are purple those are isis

Is that what ATT is giving out by default now? I have a nano sim (that i got for that nexus clone) and it works fine in my OPO. If I put it in my note 4, I only get 4G, not LTE, which I thought was odd. I can do as suggested, just want to make sure I understand first...
All att Sims are lte capable but the purple ones are softcard (isis) compatible, meaning they have the correct security features for the use of isis enabled devices

ok, so he meant isis above.
I think this is just a standard att LTE card...its orange...and it DOES work in my OPO, so I think that theory is out.
Call customer care and give them the imei of a phone that supports lte and have them add that and just not change the sim

The Isis/Softcard is a problem as described above, but there's also a "nextgenphone" feature that goes on your account with newer phones (along with your normal data feature) and newer phones are using that with a related APN so it could have something to do with that new feature. Haven't figured it out yet but I'm playing with the system & I'll post what I find. So far all my secure sims have changed phones fine. My Gear S gave me a couple problems but I'm not sure if they were related.

Interesting. When I went to another ATT store a few weeks ago to change to a nano sim, the rep changed some codes on my plan. I got this in an email:
DELETED MOBILESHAREVSL64VT
ADDED MOBILESHAREVP20
Last night I went to a different ATT store than usual, and found out they were just a partner (though you could never tell it) and he said there were a few wonky codes on my plan, one of which mentioned something about APNs...so maybe youre on to something. He was under the impression it was grandfathered though, so it was old. He could, of course be wrong.
He also tried his SIM (oh and I have a non-secure sim) in my one plus one from his moto x 2014 and it worked just fine. LTE and everything. He put my sim into his X, and got 4G only, no LTE.
So he swapped me back into a non-secure micro sim, just to try things out again, and I left the store with my one plus one working. I came home, dropped it into my Note 4, and got 4G only, no LTE. When I put it back into my OPO, I got a text message saying I needed a new sim to work with my phones new feature. Weird.
The original feature is just normal mobile share data but I'll have to look up the second one I haven't seen that in the system. What i know is that once you put your sim in a newer phone (last few months) the system auto adds that nextgen feature & you end up either needing a secure sim or have to put the correct imei on the account

So that sounds like its our culprit.
If i have a secure sim for my note 4....can I move that to my OPO? I've heard no, but I've also heard yes...
I have been swapping my Sim card that I got with my Note 4 with my Note 3 Nokia 1520 and my Gear S. I have had data act up but only with the Note 4. Everything else has worked fine. In the Note 4 what I have done is add the older apn and toggle to that apn. Let it pickup the 4G lte icon or whatever it is. Got to phone app settings advanced settings and make sure you don't get an error. Then switch back to the Nextgen apn.
Worked for me.

For Christmas I got an iPhone 5s for my daughter,to replace her iPhone 4s.Its been so long since I've used an iphone. Christmas morning she opened it.I told her just swap your Sim card, she came back down kinda upset and said it didnt fit.Now I felt bad,ATT isn't open nothing I could do.I remembered once I took a Sim that was too small and crazy glued it to a iPhone 3g Sim tray and it worked. So I googled cutting an iPhone 5s Sim card, and there's actually a template you can DL and trace where to cut.For some reason my printer didn't want to work so used a ruler and the dimensions that were on the site,it was micro Sim to nano sim. I got really sharp heavy duty scissors and cut it,sanded the sides and corner, even the non contact side because the nano is like a hair thinner, fit right in sim tray and worked perfect.I've offered to give her my S5,nope lol these kids and there Iphones. And that phones IMEI was on my plan that day,it was an ATT phone from someone who recently got a 6plus that I got it from.

carrier unlocking AT&T from KitKat

Haaa, AT&T! So my AT&T Note II has been off contract since I got the Nexus 6 back in November on launch day (perfect timing, eh?) Anyhow, since it was off contract, I asked the death star for the unlock code through their web page specifically for that, and they gave it to me. In the instructions included with the code, they gave a very terse warning that after five tries it would be permanently locked to AT&T. Why? Pretty crappy if you ask me. Further, what they didn't tell me was that if the phone is on KitKat, the unlock code won't work unless you do some very specific things in some hidden menus. So I burned up my five tries and failed. Then I found the page that listed the specific steps, did them, and voila... unlocked. Tried and tested using the Tmobile sim from my wife's iphone 6. Freaking AT&T.
Rant alert:
I commonly switch my old grandfathered AT&T unlimited iphone data sim back and forth between old phones just for fun. But come to find out, if I put the same sim into my cellular 2014 ipad air, it will not work. But if i put my wife's Tmobile sim into my 2014 ipad air, it works great. AT&T blocking tablet data with a phone sim. Tmobile doesn't. Freaking AT&T. They suck. If I didn't have the grandfathered unlimited data plan from back in 2007, i'd dump them like a bucket of pig slop.

so what are you trying to do, carrier unlock your note 2 which is currently on kitkat, to use any sim?
unfortunetly, the only way you can do this is to flash, using odin and in download mode, the stock 4.1.1 rom of your carrier (or any which has 4.1.1) from here and then doing the following steps from here.
Only thing is, that it will cause you to trip the counter.... and doesn't seem to want to go back to 0 (due to some hardware thingy)... but since you're already out of warranty, shouldn't really matter.
Anyways, once you have completed that, and tested with a different sim and confirmed it working, you can then go ahead and flash back the kitkat rom (4.4.2) of your carrier (or any other you want) using odin again and that's it. your phone will be back to its official state minus the knox warranty counter still at 1.
edit: Unfortunately.... the speed of the downloads of the images SUCK for the rom images... stupid hosting site.... anyways i had to leave it overnight... which i'd recommend you doing if you cant find any other location with those images...
No mate, my note 2, IS carrier unlocked. Att gave me the unlock code after my contract ended. Their instructions for using it were incomplete if you had ungraded to KitKat which I had, but I figured it out and now I have full carrier unlock.
What I have not solved is being able to put my att phone sim into my att iPad and have it work. If I put my wife's T-Mobile phone sim into my iPad, it works fine. So it is att that doesn't let us swap our sim back and forth between phone and tablet. T-Mobile doesn't do this. Not sure if Sprint and Verizon have the same hostile altitude.
I have grandfathered att unlimited data form the original iPhone. But their douchey attitude about swapping the sim between phone and tablet may be enough to drop them altogether if project fi works out for me.

Does VZW allow N975F international variants on their network? [Update: YES!* (YMMV)]

I'm looking to get a Note 10+ phone that can be bootloader unlocked & rooted, but I'm tied to Verizon.
Anyone using either the N976F or N975F on VZW? Any issues or tricks in order to get them to accept something other than the "V" variant that is locked down and may never have root?
Trying to figure out which of these 3 Note 10+ phone variants to go with:
N975F
N976F
N9750/DS
TIA.
UPDATE: Not officially, but it seems possible. Keep reading below for my experience...
I'm on the n9750 on Verizon and it seems to be working well. I just got it so I haven't got to fully test quite yet.
Just for reference, I wanted to post this for others since I wasn't able to find true compatibility details other than VZW's ironfisted "certified" devices (ie the locked SM-N975U):
I recently purchased a Samsung Note 10+ (SM-N975F/DS) international variant online, and was able to get successfully attached to my VZW account. I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan, and was replacing an existing phone on my account.
Here's how it went down:
Initially when I tried to activate and attach the N10+ to my account via VZW website, it told me the phone couldn't be registered on their network.
Took my phone to a local VZW store.
Told the rep I bought a new phone and needed it attached to my account.
He validated my account details (he never asked for the IMEI of my new phone) & grabbed a new sim card, did his thing on the VZW tablet terminal and then popped the sim into my new phone.
At this point, the LTE data worked almost immediately, however the voice calling didn't work. Test calls just failed and quickly exited the phone app saying call failed/ended.
He said wait a couple minutes, sometimes it takes a bit, so we did. I think we also rebooted too. He was checking various things on my phone and the account.
He noticed that the VZW system said my phone couldn't be used on their network, but said there was something he could try...
He took the sim out of my phone and popped it into his already activated VZW phone. After a maybe 30 seconds, he made a test voice call, and it worked (my sim, his phone)
Then we swapped my newly activated sim back into my new phone and after about 30 seconds, I had both LTE data (as before) and now also had voice calling. A quick test call from my phone confirmed and I was good to go!
Obviously, YMMV, but it can be done, you just might need to find a VZW rep that is helpful and willing to go the extra mile to get the international version (SM-N975F/DS) activated onto the Verizon network.

S20 FE 5G Walmart Black Friday deal

If anyone is interested the Straight Talk S20 FE G781U1 phones that you can get from Walmart during the Black Friday event are sim unlocked, at least the one that I picked up is.
Unfortunately it looks like they are on more recent build numbers. The one I got is 5DUH1 which is too recent for the bootloader unlock that you can find on on XDA.
Not intending this to be an advertisement for Walmat but rather an FYI for anyone looking for an S20 FE 5G for an unbeatable price. I've been watching Swappa for awhile and the price is much lower than anything I've seen there.
Before I bought it I assumed it would be locked to Straight Talk and I would have to try to find a third party source to do the Sim unlock. Does not seem to be the case. I put in the sim card from my work phone and was able to make a call on At&t network.
Out of the box it is One UI version 3.1, Android 11, August 2021 security patch. It has the typical Google and Samsung bloat but I don't see anything on it related to Straight Talk or Tracfone. It came with a Straight Talk Sim but I pulled it out before the first boot. After starting booting with the At&t sim it shows software provider version as ATT/ATT/XXA.
I'll be getting this one set up for the better half on T-mobile to upgrade her from the LG v30 that has been great but she wants a better camera and the S20 FE is a significant upgrade in that respect along with many other improvements.
Thanks for sharing the information. I ordered the same phone and I was thinking to get a cheap Tracfone plan for this phone. But, I guess I don't need to do it anymore if it is unlocked.
Does the phone shows Tracfone or ST logo when it boot up? Does it come with any of Tracfone app like "Device Info" & 1Weather bloatware?

I bought two from my local Walmart. Neither have any straight talk bloat or any straight talk logos while booting or other wise.
Same here, no Straight Talk or Tracfone branding other than an extra wrapper on the box that says Straight Talk.
Also, it came with a Straight Talk Sim installed but I took that out prior to first boot up.
Only google and Samsung bloat installed. Nothing that looked like it was affiliated with Straight Talk or Tracfone.
After verifying that it wasn't locked I have since installed the a T-Mobile Sim and it seems to be working fine on the existing postpaid T-Mobile Plan. Didn't have to do anything special to make that work. The software provider shows TMB/TMB/XXA as expected.
It appears that Wifi Calling and Hotspot are both working with the T-mobile sim. I haven't had a chance to verify that it's working on all T-Mobile frequencies but I also don't know if band 71 is available in my area. No reason at the moment to expect that not to be working.
I saw this morning that Walmart was now listing this phone at $319 so I assume the Black Friday offer is over but $319 is still a pretty good deal. I would think this would have to drive down the prices on Swappa.

No service after unlocking bootloader and new firmware

So I just want to say Ive been on straight talk for probably 12-15 yrs. I thought I knew all the tricks for getting phones to work on certain networks.
I prefer verizon in my location, it has the best coverage but also verizon sims have always been tricky to use on phones I didnt buy from straight talk. In the past Ive been told by straight talk that my phone wasnt compatible with verizon network but then I would just buy a junk $40 verizon/cdma phone, activate the sim in the cheap phone, and then transfer it over to my owned, unlocked, nicer phone and that would be enough to get calls and text. then set a couple APN settings and you have data and mms.
So.... Ive had a verizon sim in my LG G7ulm for 3 or 4 years now...or since it came out in 2018.
I have an unlocked version I bought outright. I cant remember if straight talk let me register it directly on verizon sim or if I had to do the sim swap trick mentioned above but anyway....3 years at least of zero problems.
My phone been stuck on android 8 and running slow so decided to wipe it and flash android 10 firmware. After doing so I can boot the phone and for 20-30 sec it shows its connected to 4g lte but then drops and i have no service at all. Ive tried all network operators/modes, Ive set APN...reboot, Ive tried 6 or 7 various different firmware revisions and this is the same result....no service.
I even went back to stock oreo 8.0.0 firmware but the problem still persists.
I contacted straight talk via chat which always is a laugh because they cant trouble shoot a rock that wont roll downhill and just tells you the device is not compatible. My daughter has this same phone and it worked fine for years as well but she took her sim out to test a different phone and lost it and when she ordered a new one it wouldnt work and they told her the phone was incompatible even though me and her both had these phones working fine for years and know they work.
So is straigt talk just blacklisting my phone? Did reflashing a new firmware cause the tower to re-verify the device and blacklist it or something? I can still pop this sim in my old phone and it connects perfectly fine and has service.
I just dont get it. My daughter when she ordered a new verizon ST sim and activated it her phone did the same thing and they said it wasnt compatible with verizon which is bullsh## because if you activate the sim on a different device then swap it over it works great.
Why do they care what device it is solong as your paying for service?
I dont know whether I should try a new ST verizon sim, ST t-mobil sim, or ST att sim now.... Att always works on these unlocked phones but service is crap in this area with at&t.
Anyone have similar experience or knowledge about this issue?
