Is Extended Care worth it? - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

I just ordered the XL (128GB), but skipped the Extended Care for $130. I read what it was before skipping, and it's basically an extended warranty for the second year. The first year is covered by Google, so for two years the phone would be covered for an additional $130. How may have either bought it, or skipped it, and/or had to use it if you did get it? Is it really worth it? For the cost I paid for the phone I plan on keeping it for at least five years as my usual yearly purchases have been low/mid ranged at around $200/$250 a pop, so I figured if I pay $1,000 for a phone, it should last the sum of my yearly purchases, and that way I don't feel bad paying so much since I justify it by paying $1,000 over five years either way. I'm just wondering what people think about the Extend Care for one more year of protection.

I always install a tempered glass screen protector and a TPU case immediately after unboxing my phones. In fact, I already have a new Spigen case sitting in my home office and the screen protectors should be here next week. I'm a nutcase about keeping my devices in 100% "like new" condition, mainly for resale.
However, if I didn't use a case/screen protector I would absolutely pay for the Preferred Care for that accidental damage coverage.

I'm very careful with my phone, and I keep it in a case also. My Incipio DualPro is on it's way as I type this. In all my years of having a phone (since getting a Nexus One on day one) I've never had to send one in for repairs. It's just now that I'm paying a grand I almost felt like I needed it, but once I read it only covered one more year, I skipped it. Thanks for your input.

Have had extended care on my daughter Nexus 5x and my Nexus 6P. The 5x boot looped twice, the first time replacement for the 5x was free. The second had to pay the deductible, and they shipped a brand new 5x not a refurb. My 6P boot looped and they offered a dollar amount or a Pixel XL. Went from a 64GB 6P to a 128GB Pixel XL.
Totally worth the extra $$ just for peace of mind.

Break the screen and you'll see how much you needed it. This phone has a glass back too. Definitely bought the insurance.

Extended warranties are insurance. Here's how insurance works: The insurer calculates the cost and probability that you will file a claim. They add a bunch on top of that for profit, and that's what you pay. So, as with any insurance, it's only worth it if you have much higher than average probability of filing a claim (you're a klutz), or you can't afford to replace it if you break it.
On the other hand, I understand there are folks who don't want to treat their phone like the $800 piece of glass that it is, and it's absolutely worth it to them.

Just making sure you're understanding it correctly. If you drop your phone and break the glass in the first year (or second year for that matter), you're not covered if you don't get extended care. The repair will be very expensive. It's not just an extra year of warranty.

I've never cracked a screen before. Always buy glass screen protectors and cases. How much is a screen repair? because if u do use the insurance its $130 for extended care plus a $130 deductable. If a screen repair is $250 ill take my chances lol vs $260 if I use it once.
Edit: Ubreakifix charges $220 for a screen replacement so I don't see the point. Unless your someone who breaks phones a ton. Wow so preferred care is $130 plus if u need to use it you pay a $130 deductible for the 3XL so a total cost of $260 for 1 screen repair if I break it once during ownership.

^ This is exactly what most people, who buy extended warranties, tend to overlook. There is still a deductible, even with the expensive extended warranty. And often times, as you've already discovered, the extended warranty + deductible actually cost more than just paying out of pocket for the repair.
However, one thing this does overlook is if you drop the phone and happen to crack both the back and the front. That's going to be an expensive repair that likely would have saved you money with the extended warranty.
Personally, I do DBrand skin for the back, then cover it with a TPU case, then install a full coverage glass screen protector. In total that cost is around ~$35 and provides all the protection I need for peace of mind, including protecting the back glass from getting scratched up from the case moving/rubbing over time (hence the DBrand skin).

google support/customer service with extended warr is far more pro customer is always right that most companies.
i had 3 nexus 6p replacement. the last was with a pixel xl. i had some ring tone issues on 8.1 and after a factory reset that did not solve my issue, they were ready to replace my new xl with a refurb xl. i can live with the issue which is very manageable and passed.
the extended warranty was extended for me by google. it was the best bargain that i have ever had.
i am not tech oriented and do not enjoy problem solving myself. i am on this site to get an over view from savvy users of the good, the bad and the ugly on the 3 and xl3. i am still happy with my xl, but enjoy window shopping

I'm awaiting a tempered glass protector and I have a Tech21 Evo Check already installed. I also use a Flygrip that makes it harder for me to drop the phone. This is especially good in clubs or bars where I may get bumped by some drunk unexpectedly.
I only dropped my Nexus 6 a few times. I had a tempered glass protector and a Ballistic case on it. I think the hottest was getting out if an SUV. It dropped face down into asphalt and phone everything was fine.
As for the extra year of warranty, I'll rely on the extra year if protection from Visa.

Do I really need a Screen Protector for Captivate?

Hi,
Is the Capacitative screen of this phone is scratch resistant like iPhone? I was able to use my iPhone for 2years without getting a scratch on screen. I am awaiting my phone in mail, was thinking of buying accesories...
Thank you
I won't be getting a protector for mine. As long as you are careful, you'll be fine.
Even people with ocd make mistakes. Get the case from att and a screen protector. Protect your investment. Trust me.

Very true. And that whole scratch protector is kinda a lie. You can see pics/vids where the iPhone screen is pretty scratched.
No offense to anyone posting on this topic but I do not understand the purchase of accessories from AT&T or any other provider store. Items for these phones can be purchased significantly cheaper from online.
I bought a box of cut-to-size screen protectors for $5 from amazon and it has lasted our family through several phones and replacements. Touch screen function is not hindered and clarity is perfectly fine.
Though I use screen protectors, I do not believe in phone cases. I feel a phone is built to fit the users hand and cases add unwanted bulk that I don't like. Accidents do happen but in most situations you will cause no more than cosmetic damage. Use some sense when handling your phone and it should last until your next.
I remember recently having a "discussion" with my wife as to why she paid more to get a white iphone and then put a case on it. This baffled me to the point of agitation and I had to drop the conversation.
If really concerned, just get insurance through your provider or home insurance company. At least until the phone price drops after the next big release.
Thanks
Thanks for the replies, will be getting a case any way, still thinking of screen protector...

QFT on all that. I bought like 6 from Ebay China for like $1 and they work better than Apple's $10 ones.

That's a calculated risk.
Is spending $5/mo with a $50 deductible worth it versus spending $30 for a case???
You obviously have not used any good cases. Not all cases are like Otterbox and add half a pound to the weight and an inch to the thickness... SwitchEasy was my favorite when I had my iPhone. Waiting for something similar on the Captivate now.
I'm debating this as well.
I got the body glove case from att and a pack of screen protectors. The att rep put it on for me bubble free. I keep the case on when i am out and take it off at my desk at work. The phone is beautiful. The screen protector is more finger friendly and shows no smudges.
Definitely get a screen protector. Accidents happen, no matter how careful you are. And I would suggest a body glove of some type, again, accidents happen.
What brand of screen protector do you guys recommend?

aaaaaaaaahhhhhaha white iphone with a case. i lol'd. women eh?
with ur statement on bulk, get one with a minimalistic design. a case not only protect ur phone but look sexy too. if you scratch a case you can replace it hangin on to that sex appeal. scratch a phone and ur sol. Also good condition is important for resale
oh but if ur really against cases just get one like leather case that you only keep it in while ur not using it
Case:
I understand both sides. I guess "accidentally" putting my phones through more punishment than I thought they would endure has given me excess confidence in their physical design. I am a fan of the "phone pocket" now in most jeans and cargo pants. It is comfortable and easy to grab (also stays low to the ground). I would like to take some advice and get a nice case but I guess my wife's iPhone cases have already left me disapproving and I hate to add bulk, but maybe I'll try again. I'll admit the Captivate is a bit "smooth."
Screen Protector:
There is not to much to argue about here. I wouldn't worry about brand.
1. Does it stick to the screen?
2. Is it clear?
3. Does it fit?
If you answer YES to all three of these then it is a good screen protector.
If you answer NO to any one of these questions, KEEP SHOPPING.
I'll take a look later to see what brand the box is I have at home so I can post it.
Slim but durable cases are possible. Just very few companies put forth the effort to engineer one.
Switch Easy, they only make for iProducts but when I had my 3GS it was great. A thin rubber around the outside (protect it from shocks and also keeps the case itself from scratching it), then you snap a horizontal then a vertical case that form into one hard case... It was very thin (nothing like the bulk of an Otterbox), yet I think you could have thrown it across the room and the phone been fine.
I recommend the invisibleShield by Zagg. Had one on my iphone and totaled out a work van by flipping it with the phone sitting on the dash. Was one single mark on the iphone screen and it came off when I put a new Shield on it. I was impressed. It feels a bit rubbery for a screen protector at first but never noticed any impedance with touch sensitivity. Costs a bit more then normal protectors as well but again well worth it if you ask me.
Just got home and looked at the protectors I have. The brand is WRITERIGHT (universal screen protectors)
A set of 10 was dirt cheap ($3) and I have been using them for about 2 years. They are cut-to-fit and will cover the entire face of the captivate.

hello all. first post on here. just got my captivate last saturday and still waiting for martin fields to make a screen protector for this phone. they are a lil pricey, but totally worth it.
Well when I picked up my Captivate, I picked up the Body Glove Silicone Case from ATT because I prefer to keep any new devices in a silicone/gel style case for some protection. My sister and mom picked up the Captivate after they played with mine on Sunday *7-19-2010* and called me last night to set up my mom's phone and install a screen protector *3x for $ 9.99 at the corporate att store in my area*, for installing the sp and transfering the contacts *manually* and setting up gmail, I got a SP for free for my captivate for 15 minuets worth of work. Not too bad and I am a little more less worried then the last 2 days..

Wow, 16 replies and not one answer to the original question about the Glass.
Many devices like Microsoft Zunes have a special hardened Glass, you can use keys, knives, razor blades etc to it and not scratch them. If a screen protector makes you warm and fuzzy go for it, but if this device (I don't yet know what Glass it has) has "that" Glass then its a waste of money. It's going to take a hell of a hit to break it, and a sceen protector wont prevent that.
You can read about such glass here:
http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archives/2009/04/glass-screen-durability-test-a-lesson-on-the-mohs-hardness-scale.php
I ran a screen protector on my HTC Hermes for years, and hated it. Finally removed it last year and love it. And no scratches. (Case has flip cover for when its in your pocket) A lot more depends on how you treat it. I have 4 sons, 2 of them seem to destroy electronics, 2 of them don't.

Do Not order From Seidio (cases or screen protectors)

I bought the extended convert case from Seidio for my HTC Thunderbolt.
The screen protector was to big. So it didn't stay on.
Seidio then informed me that they would not exchange it or send me a new
one. They told me to ship it back and i would get a refund
Then they said i had to pay to ship it back. Pay to ship back a bad product
Once i shipped it back, they charged me $9.95 surcharge.
WTF. I received a defective product and
had to pay to ship it back and lose even more money for surcharge.
DO NOT ORDER FROM THEM A HOLES.
Any one else have a bad experience from them.
Ban them. Ban Them.
I ordered a crystal clear protector and it is great from
Steinheil. Gonna get the otter box case.
Glad I read this. I was literally just going home to order one.

Been ordering from Seidio for years...always great cases and never had any problems!
Yea , well try sending something back.
I lost 15 dollars because of shipping and surcharge.
IT WAS A DEFECTIVE PRO0DUCT.
They should of sent me a box to send it back to them.
Will never order from them again.
And if you read other forums or just google siedio.
A lot of people are talking about how BAD seidio customer service is.
most companies never pay for you to ship back. The overcharge is ridiculous but i would call em and talk to someone on the phone. They might reinburse you.
I have bought countless things from seidio for my Nexus One and they were amazing products and never had a single problem.
Seriously call em up, dont let them rob you of 10 bucks.
Its 4th of July, do it for America.
Wow! Thank you for the heads up! That's rediculous!
I have ordered from them several times without any problems. Guess you can have issues with any manufacturer though.
Well I called them back and THEY said there is a problem with the thunderbolt
screen protector and the lady on the phone said she didn't know why they
didn't just send me one out right away. She also refunded the $10 surcharge.
She said they do exchange products. I told her i got 4 different emails saying
they didn't do that and to send the entire product back. They didn't refund
the return shipping.
But at least I got my surcharge back. I should've got the shipping back to
since she confirmed there was a problem with the screen protectors being to big.
If they know this why would they even ship it to me.
Hope everyone can see what i when thru with them.
Thanks for the replys
I got one from there it wasnt so bad

Good luck with your boycott of Seidio. I've been using their cases for years and never had any problems.
As stated, contact them, continue to press the matter and you will more than likely be reimbursed. my favorite tactic is to threaten reporting them to the BBB, you'll get your way pretty fast most times.
I've ordered several things from Seidio (and had to send some back). Never had any issues with them.
Glad to hear you got things worked out!
Jim
Ma be better to order from somewhere like amazon. They have better return policy and customer care. Just got a seidio case for my SGS2 from amazon and price was almost 10$ less.
i know there products are good but now seeing bad service.....
I don't know about their customer service because I've never had any trouble out or their products. Had one of their cases and screen protectors on my incredible.
Never had any issues from them.
I am about to buy a screen protection too, I think I can trust them.
thanks for the heads up.

[Q] S3 Screen break..beware.

Hi, sad situation for me...bought the S3 last Wednesday. Phone slipped out of pants pocket yesterday, screen completely shattered, on impact with floor. The phone was a hardware upgrade, so it cost me virtually nothing for the phone, however, now I have lost the warranty, and my repair bill to fix the screen is going to be approximately $300 and $40 to get the repair estimate. I used a credit card to pay for it which has insurance only up to what I paid. So after repairs I will have a non warranted phone and out of pocket $$$, so much for my hardware upgrade phone cost saving. Even if I purchased the protection plan I would be out $200, and no warranty either. Sadly, 2 service reps said they have the same phone and their kids play with it and drop it all the time. I guess I must be the lucky one who got one with defective glass?? Heres hoping nothing happens technically with the phone over the next 3 years.
Any one else have glass issues?
Nope. Buy an otterbox. Its 50 dollars and will save you the headache and money if you have a case of the butter fingers.

Sorry about your phone.. But next time it's time to use a case that's has a good amount of protection depending on you....
As for maybe having a defected screen that you think broke to easy... It all depends how the phone /screen hits the ground and what type.. I saw them gorilla glass demos how it can take a good beating and how much pressure it takes to cracked the screen.. I think that's just marketing.. They don't demo it with a phone that's why we have people in YouTube for that lol.. Some people screen break from a 2 foot fall..
Otter box is waste of money and bulky. Get the speck candy shell, its slim, and shock absorbent.
Yeah I was looking for a case, guess I didn't realize how fragile the glass was....gorilla you say....lol
i have always liked the casemate pop series

I doubt the glass was defective, its been shown that if the phone falls a certain way the glass will shatter, generally if you drop the phone naked from a pretty considerable height more then 3 feet, and it hits one of the corners generally the top, the glass will shatter. Like everyone else has said get a case. Ive dropped my phone a few times now still looks as new as the day I bought it, I recommend TPU cases from Diztronic or SGP, thing enough and provide a decent amount of drop protection.
I have an otterbox commuter case and my phone just survived a car accident.
It flew from the console, hit the dash, bounced to the deploying airbag bounced off the rear glass and landed in the drivers footwell.
Yup, really fragile this phone.
I have a defender series and personally I don't notice the bulk that much, if u really cared about the bulk why even have a case ? Just get invis shield and call it a day. Only real downside of an otter box is that the open areas,I.e. home button cameras and speakers/mics get dirty and have to be cleaned.

I've found the screen protector that's built in to the Defender doesn't seat properly on the screen (most likely due to the slightly concave screen). I just popped the screen protector out, installed a screen protector on the phone, good to go.

REALLY sorry to hear about your screen! That really sucks! I put a Trident Kraken AMS on mine and have dropped it twice on concrete, Barely a scratch; cost me $30.
The Gorilla Glass was never designed to survive that type of fall. It's designed to resist scratching(against items with the same strength), and that's about all.
Get a decent case, it really is worth the extra bulk

[Q] Google's $5 Insurance

Anyone have experience with them to share?
I decided to go with the $5/month option for this phone purchase.
I'll do this and skip buying a case.
The Insurance says it covers the phone if you drop & break it.
$99 deductible I think?
I figure I'll have the phone for one year, which amounts to $60 paid in Insurance.
If I drop and break it anytime during that year, that'll be $100 deductible + $60 insurance spent and I get a replacement phone.
Heck, I've spent $100 on cases in just a single year before.
A $30 case here, then another $30 case there just to get a kickstand, then another $30 case there because I liked the new ones style better, etc. etc.
I think I'm done with cases and screen protectors.
I can tell you from personal experience - that means you'll have a phone with a slight scratch that's not worth paying $100 to replace but still really annoying to look at. Also if the pixel is even half as slippery as the nexus 6p was, you're going to want something w/ more grip on it.
-m
I'll be using a Kickstand4U, so I don't really need to worry about slippery phones.
The kickstand sticks to the back of the phone and gives it a "bump" that works nicely when holding the phone.
And also the kickstand opens up with a "loop" that you can insert a finger into which is comfortable and makes it impossible to accidentally drop the phone.

The problem with Asurion which covers the replacement phone is that they always send back refurbs in most cases but not all it's a Gamble. Unless you claim a replacement within the first month or so where they have new replacement units to cover the initial claims.
Personally I put on an ultra thin tpu and glass screen protector and not worry. I carry my phone in front pocket.

I found a killer deal on a used Pixel XL, so I don't have a reason to swap out backs on my OPO anymore. Definitely going to throw the bamboo on ebay, but I figured I would see if anyone wanted to buy it without me having to pay fees. I'll do an even fifty bucks (what I originally paid back in the day) on the bamboo plus whatever shipping method you want through a gmail money transfer or paypal.
I also have my OPO with sandstone back. It never saw a case and rarely saw a screen protector, so it is worth more in parts. If you need anything from it, let me know. The screen, with the many scratches (not seen w/ screen on), has a fresh oleophobic coating on it. So it feels new, and repels fingerprints as if it is.
I just got in five camera lens covers, the piece of glass that covers the camera on the back that gets scratched all to hell, that I will be getting rid of too. And a battery that is on the way from ali. I will test the battery for capacity and sell that one for what I have in it, plus ship and fees. Same for the lenses. So if you need a battery shipped from Tennessee instead of China, let me know.
Mods: I don't know if this breaks any rules or not. If it does, please feel free to delete. No harm no foul. I am not trying to run an enterprise or anything, just trying to give first dibs to 'active' xda OPO owners. You can go back to the original Moto X days and see where I gave away, with free shipping, some cases and screen protectors for the OG Moto X. And delivered on my promises. So not trying to hoodoo anyone.
Anywho... I will probably get around to ripping apart the OPO next week and will be posting things on ebay then. So if you want before it goes on ebay for max price, let me know.

Let me know the price of sandstone back and bamboo back
BTW I stay in India , let me know the shipping charge as well
I'm interested in the bamboo back cover, as I've been searching all over for ages and haven't had any luck. Please let me know exactly how much you'd like for it as well as exactly how the transaction will take place, as I'd like to get my hands on it.
(I also sent a PM, if you'd rather carry on this conversation there.)
It's $50 for the bamboo and will be $43 for the sandstone. Those are the prices I paid. Plus ship ($7.15 for small flat rate box USPS), plus any money transfer fees. I am not really interested in filling out forms to ship internationally but I will... If I cannot sell on ebay. My experience shipping to china and uk adds another $30 or $40 to the ship price.
As for the Sandstone back, I have decided to try and make the 4,000 mah ZTE battery work for the opo. I have the zte batt in house, just waiting on the cheap opo replacement batt. So will not be busting down the opo until I get that project done. Should be some time this week. If it works... I will post a vid on youtube for you guys on how to do it. Either way the Sandstone will be ready to ship out once I get it done.

Hey, have you posted them to eBay yet?
If not, how much would you ask for the motherboard?
Thanks!
