Guide: How I fixed MMS Settings in Flashable VS996. Might work on All V30 Stock Roms. - LG V30 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hey all. I thought I would share what I found in fixing my own MMS issues in the hopes that maybe this will help other people. I only take responsibility for what I did to my own Frankensteined, unlocked, US998 kdz'd, stock Verizon Rom'd V30 phone. If this doesn't work for you or causes you issues, I am in no way at fault or liable for what you did to your own phone. I only know this worked for me.
I'm on Verizon and installed Westwood's flashable VS996 20-D ROM over the US998 20B KDZ. For some time, I've been having issues sending MMS messages from both Android's Stock "Messaging" app and Google's "Messages" app. I was able to use Verizon Messaging+, which is set to work directly with Verizon's servers, and was also able to use Legacy mode in Textra, where I was able to set the APN for Textra to use independently of what the system was set to use. However, I wanted to use the somewhat more Default messaging apps, Android Messaging or Google Messages...or at least have the ability to do so.
After a lot of sleuthing, and some subsequent testing, I found that the default APN settings for MMS messaging is saved in:
\root\data\data\com.android.mms\shared_prefs\com.android.mms_preferences.xml
Now, there's a lot of other stuff in there, and I didn't feel comfortable changing things around in that file, so I used another program, Shortcut Master Lite, from the XDA forums, to search for those hidden settings. (There is also a full, paid version of this program on Google Play to support the developer. There are likely many other programs that do the same things as well).
In ShortcutMaster Lite, I clicked the hamburger (3-dot) button choose App Explorer.
I scrolled down to and clicked on Messaging (com.android.mms)
I scrolled to the bottom and clicked on MmsSprintSettingActivity
I clicked on Launch
There I was able to see what the default MMS settings are. In my case, this was still set to the Sprint URL, https:/mms.sprintpcs.com, and some fancy Gateway and Port.
I changed these values to match up with Verizon's MMS settings, so I set the URL to http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms, and then left Gateway and Set Port blank. After saving this, the phone IMMEDIATELY rebooted on it's own. After a brief heart attack, the phone rebooted and .... whaBAM! Both Messaging and Messenger work fine now!
It's kind of funny that the setting that needs to be changed is MmsSprintSettingActivity, no? Is that a holdover from the original KDZ? Is @westwood24 's Rom possibly flawed?
Also funny is that, upon post-change review, the Gateway field, which I intentionally left blank, says "only sprint server". Ha!
So in the end, these steps helped me fix my stock MMS-application(s) setting(s) problem(s). Maybe this can help others as well.

I decided to experiment with this yesterday. I'm on Verizon and have a converted LS998 and was using US99820d flashable ROM. I purchased Shortcut Master and did some exploring. Sorry I didn't grab any screenshots while in the US998 ROM but I found a similar mms/apn hidden app that mentioned Sprint in its name that wasn't exactly under com.android.mms. I changed it the url to http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms (notice the spelling of servlets lacking the "e") and blanked out all the other fields. The phone rebooted when I closed the app. I use Textra so went I to its settings and reverted the MMS behavior from Legacy back to System. I rebooted and opened Textra back up to find it fully working on the "stock" System mms settings. I thought this was a good reason to flash the latest VS996_20F ROM. I flashed the ROM and found the same mms location/settings reported by my.ads0 in the VS996 ROM. Using Shortcut Master I explored system apps and found Messaging com.android.mms (screen shot 1). I tapped it and launched MmsSprintSettingsActivity (screen shot 2). After launching, this is where you can edit default Sprint url (screen shot 3). You have to blank out all the other fields with the space bar. I closed the app and the phone rebooted. Textra was now fully functioning under the VS996 ROM without using its Legacy setting. The stock LG and Verizon sms apps are working too.
A bonus note is that I checked my WiFi calling and Video calling settings after all of this and they both were not grayed out! I'll have to try to test this soon. I never used these features because I live in a rural area but if they work because of the information that my.ads0 found it might help others. It may help that my Verizon account was already provisioned for these features because of my VZW Droid Turbo.)
What I'm sort of taking from all of this is that either the ROM or your provider's network automagically senses and fills in the mms system settings according to the type of LG V30 device you have unless you actually edit these settings to reflect your service provider when using a Frankensteined V30.

Video calling working too!

First of all, thanks for pointing out the error in my URL. I've changed "servelets" to "servlets" in the 1st post as it should be.
Second of all...WOW! I'm so glad that my write-up helped you out!

I know! Isn't that crazy? That kept on throwing me for a loop and sent me searching for that elusive value. Does that mean that the KDZ process sets that value and then the Verizon flashing just leaves it in place? Weird.

Sweet! So that's the fix needed for verizon roms. Canestfr & I had to check for OTA's at least once to enable those features on our devices. But if this method does that for us, that's even better as it kills two birds with one stone.
Thanks for these follow ups, 4stringenator!

Hopefully what you started will help other Verizon folks! This is what XDA is all about. We may not have numerous custom Roms but every little bit helps keep control of our tech.

here i have to protect westwood24 it's not flawed, it's just fact that these zips doesn't contain all and everything of a full firmware kdz, like partition table, op partition and roundabout ten to 15 other partitions are missing. i would bet that this wouldn't happen on a full kdz flash :good:

I don't believe it has anything to do the gracious work that westwood24 has done for community either. :good: I have the same issue with full VS996 and US998 KDZs. The firmware and VZW network can detect that I am using a LS998 device. I always had to change the settings within the sms/mms apps to get multimedia messages work properly. Having the ability to change these setting within the android system helped my non-Verizon supported LS998 become fully functional now. (At least in the St. Louis area VZW network) :victory: There probably is way more to this but I'm happy that I didn't have to pay full price for a VS996 and now can enjoy all the features on an affordable LS998 V30.

Is there any way to get to these settings without purchasing an app?

ok, will this work for me? I have an LS998 Frankensteined to US998 running US99820e Oreo and am using Total Wireless (verizon mvno)
I was using textra legacy, but they have omitted it now from their latest update, so MMS isn't working anymore for me, so i would like to see if this works for my situation.
I have shortcut master lite installed, but cant find what the rest of this post states to change/update the mms.
Thanks

You can always go back to using previous Textra. And then don't let it update. UNcheck automatic updates for that one app in Google Play.

One expects a full KDZ flash to convert the phone to the model of the KDZ, at least within compatible sets like US998 (open market and US cellular flavors), LS998, VS996 and AS998. Subtle issues like with texting and booting weirdness of AOSP roms on certain frankensteined models shows that isn't true. Thinking like a detective, there might be value in collecting images from Frankensteined v30's according to this matrix below for comparisons and to pull back the curtain. One benefit would be to understand what is happening behind the scenes. Another is to have a list of all of the differences to account for in a conversion.

I just noticed that today when I updated Textra too. The updated Textra should work once you find the system mms settings. I'm using the updated Textra currently with no issues. You are going to have to explore and poke around a little under system apps in Shortmaster. Look under com.android.mms to begin with. Start launching and exploring untill you find the settings screen with the Set URL, Gateway and Set Port. Tap on each one to edit. (Sorry I can't remember where it was when using the US99820x rom.) Once you find this you only change the URL to http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms. The Gateway and Port need to be blank. Once you change those and tap your back navigation button the phone will reboot. Go back and check your settings to make sure the Url is correct and the others are blank. I have a Verizon account, your gateway and port may need to be adjusted for Total Wireless https://bestmvno.com/apn-settings/total-wireless-apn-settings/

Textra app update after Nov. 1st FYI
My question to Textra devs on Dec 11: "I had issues with not being able to change the mms to "legacy' a few updates ago. I always needed this ability to edit the mms url and port for Textra to function properly. I purchased the app specifically for that function a few years ago because I use a rooted phone and custom ROMs on Verizon. Is this feature forever discontinued?"
Textra's reply:
As part of a greater Google initiative to ensure all apps are compiled against a later version of Android (API 26) from 1 Nov 2018, all apps must comply. For Textra users, this means the following features had to be removed in order to comply:
1) Notification Icons can only be white (unless you are running Android KitKat or below)
2) Notification vibration is either on or off (with a pattern) and can no longer be set independantly of your phones sound settings (as was the case in v3.50 of Textra).
3) The Android System APIs must be used for MMS, you can no longer do your own MMS protocol due to certain APIs no longer being available. This means the WiFi fix feature is also gone in Textra.
Please understand these are not features we wanted to remove (why would we?), but we had no choice.
For more details see https://developer.android.com/distribute/best-practices/develop/target-sdk
Still not happy? Please don't give a poor review, as we have no control over this, and leaving a poor review only hurts us. Even if you are angry at Google, don't shoot the messenger!
You can always downgrade to v3.50 (the last version of Textra without these Google changes) but remember you'll never get another update again or any bug fixes. Understood?
1) Uninstall Textra
2) Install http://adhoc.textra.me/Textra-35090.apk
3) Turn off auto-updates for Textra in Google Play

I recently purchased a new V 30+ from Wally World. Unlocked, rooted, and flashed vs996g. Everything is fine except VOWIFI. With my previous V30+ I was able to get VOWIFI working but with the new one, no luck. I have used Shortcut Master and gone into Verizon Hidden Menu and populated the VOWIFI toggle with my number, enabled VOWIFI in WIFI calling, LG IMS Provisioning, and Call services and still no luck. I get the VOWIFI enabled in Advanced calling, the VOWIFI Icon next to all my contacts, but when I go to make a call, it says WIFI Call for a couple of seconds and then the icon disappears before the call connects. I'm ready to give up and go back to my other V30+ and use this one as my backup, but I really wanted to use this one as my daily driver since it's brand new. Anyone have any suggestions?

Just tried to tun my wifi calling back on, my network is having issues. I live in a very rural area. Can try when I'm back at work in the big city.
Are you using same sim from the other V30?

Yes, same sim. Someone on another thread suggested a logcat, but I don't know what I'm looking at. Not even sure if I did it correctly.

Market Enabler changing APN:s

So, today I discovered that running Market Enabler actually changes my APN:s in Menu->Settings->Wireless->Mobile Network. I chose German O2 as my "fake provider". I assume this is the way Market Enabler works..?
I just installed Modaco's ROM, so I no longer have my own provider's "stock apn:s" installed. (I'm from Finland).
What's odd is, that Mobile data over HSDPA still works. So am I now surfing somehow through o2:s network? Web pages load really snappy and unfortunately I can't recall what my settings were earlier today (when I was using the stock rom and market enabler).
I must admit to not knowing exactly how roaming works. If I were German and came to Finland and used my mobile data settings from Germany over here, I would certainly be roaming. But now I am in Finland, faking that I'm from Germany (to get to paid apps on Android Market) and somehow, mobile data works. I checked, and I only have those two O2 -apn:s enabled...
If anyone can shed any light on this matter, I'd be happy to hear it.
Hi,
what I did (also in Finland) after having used Market Enabled and chosen O2 Germany, was to go to Settings -> Wireless controls -> Mobile network settings -> Network operators -> Search networks, and selected my real network provider (Select automatically option might work too). Then it asked my SIM PIN, and after a while I could see that the APN settings were back to normal, real values.
jayjay: I don't think you're actually using O2's network. I found this out today as well and wanted to start a thread but found this .
Anyway, I'm using Amon_RA's ROM, and have to manually enter the APNs as well. After using Market Enabler, I realised my APN list disappeared (is empty), but I'm still able to surf the net, MMS and all. At that time it didn't cross my mind that Market Enabler was causing it, I thought it was some Android bug, so I decided to reset the APN settings to defaults. Then I got o2 on the list as well. (I set it to o2 as well).
I figured it must be due to the apn-confs.xml. Since apn-confs.xml has no setting for my provider (StarHub, Singapore), it somehow became empty when I used Market Enabler to set it o2. However, when I resetted to defaults while I'm still "acting" as o2, it pulled the apn setting from the apn-confs.xml.
That's just a guess though but I'm quite sure about it. Hopefully the developers of MarketEnabler can let us know ^^.
Thanks for the replies! Yeah, I am also certain this will in no way affect my bill. I just had some problems, since I hadn't put in my MMS apn yet and had ran Market Enabler. This made me see two different APN:s from O2 Germany and I was unsure of how to get my one Finnish apn back and how I'd be able to put in the missing MMS one.
I just booted once, saw my "normal" single apn, added the missing MMS one, verified MMS was working and then ran Market Enabler. That hid away my real apn:s, but since they are both working, it's all good.
I really couldn't envision living without the paid apps - I think half of the ones I have are paid apps from the market and they feel so affordable after having paid a bit more for iPhone apps for a long time...

Anyway, all changes made from market enabler will be cleared after a reboot or even if you get into roaming.

Additionally here is a longer description about how the market enabler works:

btw. I just updated MarketEnabler to v.3.0.3 and fixed issue #11
I'm not sure but maybe it helps with the APN issue too ;-)

[Q] "Sign in to network" notification

Hello,
A few days ago I started receiving a notification saying "Sign in to network" and below that the name of my carrier (see the screenshot). When I click on the notification, the browser opens up but does not load any page and just stays blank. At that time the notification disappears but then appears again after a while.
Has anyone seen this and do you know why it may be appearing? I am fully stock on 4.2 and unrooted.
Thanks!
Does nobody know?
Hi,
Same problem here (with Mtel network operator),
After updating to 4.2.1 the problem still persists. After I click on the notification it asks me to open in a browser and then opens this address for a second 173.194.70.101/generate_204 , and turns into blank page.
I think that when I walk away from one network cell to a another it asks me to sign into the new cell, but I am not really sure..
I`ll keep posting if I find the solution..
Not sure if there is any difference for GSM variants of Gnex, but have you tried updating your PRL & Profile?
(Settings>About Phone>MTel? system updates)
Sometimes after a flash/upgrade until I update my Sprint profile, service seems spottier. Only other thing I can think is that your phone somehow is no longer provisioned with your carrier, shouldn't be the case (I think) when dealing with GSM carriers since your SIM what provisions the phone, but maybe poke around settings to see if there is some sort of self-provisioning option, or call M-tel.
Check your APNs. You might need new/corrected APN settings or something. That usually shows up when you're on a network (usually WiFi) that needs a user/password or accept a disclaimer to get through to the internet.
However on a mobile network the APN should serve as the connection settings and the SIM serves as authentication to the network. Normally you wouldn't be able to connect to mobile internet. Does MMS work?

Hey, guys, thanks for your input. Actually, since yesterday I stopped receiving this notification all of a sudden. I have not done anything in the mean time, so I guess it was something on the carrier's end that got resolved or something.

Hi there. By trial and error i found out that this icon starts appearing when the carrier throttles your internet speed. For example, I have unlimited internet traffic but when I reach 512 MB of traffic, the internet speed is lowered to 128 kbps. This is when the icon starts appearing for me. I also found out that if you dismiss it, it will appear again if you change connections (e.g. go from wifi to mobile). I find this behaviour annoying but I found no way to prevent it, as it seems to be something on the carrier's side.
I have the same problem only on my android phone (4.2.2) Samsung Galaxy S3 when I am at my home WIFI..
Could it be a virus. only diffference is the IP.. my browser tries to load this: 173.194.35.99/generate_204

i dnt think its caused by virus. Try check ur apn setting. Or reformat ur phone.
When you connect a mobile device with Google Play via WiFi, I have found that I must allow ssl traffic via port 5228. This connection I think is an authorization service deployed by Google. If you trust it or not, when you block outbound port 5228 (or if you block Googles' ip's) you will see the "sign into network" This is because Google Play assumes (poorly) you are connected to a WiFi network which requires a captive portal login (ie Hotel WiFi sign-in page). I am no dev but I believe the "generate_204" thing just forces the mobile browser to open a new tab so the login page will appear. It's not spooky just annoying.
Why did Google choose to deploy ssl over port 5228 and not the standard 443? Not sure, but it might lead to your Firewall's security policy blocking it as it did for mine.
I started getting the same notification on my nexus 5 recently. I had reached my data fair usage allowance and so it started appearing. I noticed that in the data usage setting the warning bar was set to my fair usage limit so I just raised the bar and hey presto no more warnings. Based on this I reckon when your data usage cycle resets each month you'll see the warning disappear until you hit your limit again.
Just done a quick test by dropping the data usage bar back to where it originally was, turned off WiFi and started browsing the web. The warning appeared again.

I have had this issue ever since I got this current phone (not a Samsung, but hear me out). From what I can tell, it is because it can not contact someone (probably Google) via cellular network. I also get this when on a WiFi connection with no internet (or very, very slow), further supporting this.
I am in an interesting situation. My carrier only has 1 APN for both MMS and data combined. However, I only get MMS with my plan, not full data. Therefore, I need to keep data enabled in Android to use MMS. Because of this I get this notification ALL THE TIME.
I'm going to try to get a logcat when it happens and see if I can find the exact service and maybe kill it. I'll update if I figure it out.

I have the same problem. It make notification at the time u linked to mobile data too, and i can't suffer it any more.So i have searched all internet and have no progress. But i found the way to block its notifications rather than voiding generation.
It's a notification generated from "Android System" and seems like a network-check function. So the problem have the mobile carrier's part(I'm in china, you know). And u can't block all notifications of "Android System" using tools like LBE or Gravitybox or anyothers cause it is useful all the time.
This Xposed Mod can help us: NotifyClean, it is the only tool to block several notifications u want of one app.
Use it in ur rooted system with xposed framework, and open it from xposed. It can log all notifications and u can tick the "Sign in to network"s in "Android System".

How to prevent updates on your G4

Root developers are saying don't take the updates. Few people are reporting that the updates made anything better. Don't take the updates if you can help it.
Follow the instructions below, and report back with your phone info (carrier, variant, software version, etc.). Also report if updates were successfully blocked, or if they installed anyway, or if you just get a nag screen. Thanks!
If your phone has already downloaded the update and is trying to install it, follow the advice here. This won't work for AT&T phones because they removed recovery mode.
Start here:
Get debloater (works without root!) and set up your computer so you can run ADB and connect with your phone. You may need to install the LG United Mobile Driver.
Please donate to the Debloater developer, gatesjunior! Debloater has made this so much easier!
There are many packages you can block that will improve the performance and battery life of your phone (see my blocked.txt below), but the packages you want to block that will hopefully prevent updates are:
LGDMSClient.apk (Blocking breaks WiFi calling setup on Sprint only.)
LGUpdateCenter.apk
LGFOTA.apk Two users reported calls going straight to voicemail with this blocked.
LGLDB.apk I don't know if it's related to updates but it seems to be MLT spyware.
Not all carriers will have all these files, but block what you do have and report any problems so I can update this post with what works and what doesn't
Carrier specific files:
Sprint users may want to block:
Sprint_Installer.apk
ItsOnService.apk
ItsOnUID.apk
Tierez reported that blocking the ItsOn files breaks WiFi. They also reported that blocking LGDMSClient.apk broke the WiFi calling setup screen.
Verizon users should block:
VerizonIgnite.apk, It's a post-sale bloatware installer. Thanks alan242!
@JeffXT inadvertently blocked a Verizon file that enabled tethering.
AT&T users should block:
WildTangent.apk
T-Mobile users should block:
AdaptClient.apk
This will break the software update screen in about phone and so far has prevented my phone from trying to update. My AT&T H810 hasn't tried to update and I can't force it to update since I blocked LGDMSClient.apk, but it seems we can't be too safe in preventing forced updates so leave no questionable package unblocked!
Something I also did during setup was to not agree to the optional LG EULA that would have allowed app updating. I've also blocked:
LGStartupEula.apk
LicenseProvider.apk
UnifiedEULA.apk
Don't block LGSystemServer.apk, it breaks notifications and other stuff (LED, sound, and vibration).
Autoprime is listing which software versions are updating the firmware to V1 here.
Good luck!
Don't block LGSystemSetup.apk or LGSetupWizard.apk! You'll need it to run if there phone gets reset. Ignore the blocked.txt file below.

After seeing the mysterious "security enhancements" mentioned in the AT&T release notes on the July 1st update I think it's important to prevent further updates incase they break future rooting methods. Also, why take their update if it's not shown to improve performance? Come on! There's an update to Uber, but no mention of touch screen fixes?!
FIrst, get debloater (works without root!)and set up your computer so you can run ADB and connect with your phone. You may need to install the LG United Mobile Driver.

Just a quick heads up (might just be me, might be US Cellular in general....I am not sure) I went through and did this after hearing about different companies basically force feeding their clientel these OTA Updates and even though I did it all right down to the letter and did not skip anything my US991 still went ahead and did a forced update to 10c (not sure why or even when it did this, just know that it did at some point).
Hopefully they are not blocking any exploits with this stupid 10c update (which I assume they did as my device was running buttery smooth and had no issues that would have needed an update in order to correct).

Sorry to hear it didn't prevent your update.
I've added more files to block, and one to unblock in the OP.

No worries, it just is what it is (yeah I was angry about it, but not like I can do anything about it). I will certainly go through and block the rest of the applications that you mentioned though so hopefully I can prevent any future aggravations caused by these damn self-updates. Thanks for posting how you went about it and letting us know that (so far at least) it is going according to plan.
Holy Cow! I thought T-Mobile was bad with the bloat but jeez....AT&T makes our bloat look like....well, I dunno it's still bloat, but we've got a LOT less of it lol. I use the debloater tool, but UX 4.0 isn't that bad by its self. I removed all the T-Mo stuff and that's about it.
Thanks!

Did removing the TMobile bloat affect wifi calling?
G4'ed it!
Not at all, less lag and a bit smoother. Battery lasts longer since apps that drain the battery are disabled. Just be smart about what you disable. It has a search feature, so I'll search for say "tmo" any apk or service with that search term in it will show up in the list, disable it and move on to the next apk/service. You dont even need to reboot, you can watch them get disabled in real time.
I just bought my second G4, trying the phone again. It is another Verizon model.
People raised interesting points about holding off on updates, in case it makes root more difficult, so I got the Debloater tool (that is awesome!) and tried to block the items listed in the original post.
With Verizon, I don't see an entry for "LGUpdateCenter.apk", so I could not block that one. I hope the remaining 5 will be enough to keep the update at-bay for now.
phineous, that's an interesting point about the optional LG EULA. I agreed to something from LG during initial setup today, I guess I didn't give any real thought to not agreeing.
I have not yet applied anyone's complete Debloater list, I guess I'm not quite brave enough for that just yet. I only went through and disabled things I could identify and knew I wouldn't need at the moment.
How many apks does the AT&T G4 have? My Tmobile has 273.
Replacing my earlier post, to avoid confusion: Verizon messed up something on my line. After a day, they got it fixed, and now I can use Advanced Calling on my G4, still with the original software (having not gotten the recent update). Everything seems to be working now.

What's your Baseband Version and Build number? I'm buying the Verizon G4 this Saturday and would like to know if I have the OTA out of the box.

I don't remember how many it came with originally, but I've blocked 85 out of a total of 297. I've probably installed about 57. I would guess around 240 originally.

Don't let the salesperson set up the phone! They seem to delight in downloading updates. I'd keep the phone off or at least disable WiFi till I could connect it to a computer and Debloat it.
Good luck!

Yeah, that's the plan. I'd just like a frame of reference so I know if all my efforts to prevent the OTA work or if I was defeated before I even got the phone.

Wow 85 is such a relief I blocked just 34. At least it does not get high temps now.T-mobile seems to add much lesser bloat indeed. My 273 include around 40 downloaded apps.

See attached. I believe the item of interest, relative to the OTA, is the Software Version. The new one (updated) ends in 611A, I think.
They did a brief setup at Best Buy for me. I Factory Reset when I got home, then Debloated the items that would start the update:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/help/how-to-prevent-updates-g4-t3148650
But it wasn't until the next day, after another Factory Reset, that I forgot to Debloat those immediately, and had turned on the WiFi. I noticed when the update was halfway downloaded. Turned off WiFi, and turned on Airplane Mode, until I was able to Debloat the offending items.
No updates stuff since then, several days ago, even with WiFi on.

Look at how sneaky the carriers are now! It's a good thing the devs are being quiet about their root method.

Chat Features in Messages

Anyone else have the issue with enabling chat features in Messages? I'm not sure if it is a carrier issue or an issue with Messages or the device? I've tried contacting my carrier and getting them to reset my RCS profile, but apparently they are having "issues" with doing this. I have read that others have had this issue and replacing the sim card has fixed it. I tried doing that yesterday to no avail. I get the attached message and then nothing ever happens. I've tried clearing cache and data for Messages, trying again, rebooting, etc. No go. This was a feature I really wanted to get enabled on this device. My carrier (Rogers) does offer RCS messaging, but this simply is not working or not provisioning with the carrier server.
Since no one ever responded here and the carrier still hasn't come up with a fix, here is what I did to enable chat features and get past that "excuse the wait..." screen:
Restarted the device
Go to settings-apps-android messages and then force stop
Launch Google Play and uninstall messages
Then go back to Google Play and install latest version again
Chat features are then enabled. Not that it's that big of a deal because if the people you are texting don't have a phone that supports RCS and even if they do, if they don't have chat features turned on, then it still won't work. It was simply bugging me because the option was there and I couldn't get it enabled.
I am with rogers and have same issue. How do you uninstall messages? It only uninstall its update. Do you root to uninstall complete messages app?
I'm also with Rogers, and this is the solution that worked for me. I found it on the Rogers Community forums.
You have to disable the app called Carrier Services, now setup RCS through the Messages app.
Then you can reenable Carrier Services.
I also rebooted, but I don't know if that's necessary. I hope this helps.

If you force stop it, you can uninstall. It may only uninstall the updates, but it does uninstall after you finally get it to force stop. I had to try force stop a couple of times.

I didn't have to do this portion. When I went into Messages after doing my steps, chat features were automatically enabled.
What was really funny is Rogers kept sending me emails telling me they were "working on a fix but hadn't found one yet." When I got another email yesterday stating this from them, I chatted with tech support and told them I had fixed it myself so they could stop sending me emails about them working on it. Then I get an email from them stating that "they had fixed my issue..." LOL. Sure, sure you did.
I can't honestly say this was the cause, but my issues didn't happen until I updated to the January Security Patch. I'll try these steps tonight to see if I can get them re-enabled.

Does Rogers sell the Pixel 3 in their stores? I'm curious because I have purchased my Pixel 3 from Google and I'm using it on a carrier (T-Mobile) who doesn't sell the P3, but is starting to support RCS. However, their version of RCS support appears to only be enabled through a carrier supplied software update to T-Mobile branded phones. I'm afraid I'll never be able to use RCS on the ONE phone that comes with RCS support out of the box.
But if you were able to get RCS support without Rogers selling the phone, then there may still be hope for me someday!

Yup. Both the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL in their stores, online, etc.
If anyone's RCS won't work after clicking "yes, I'm in", just disable carrier services, go back to messages and opt in again. Once working, enable carrier services.
Chat features work in Messages App by Google LLC for me nearly everywhere now:
- Huawei AL10 P9 running Emui 8 Oreo on Telekom network in Hungary on WiFi (no Data subscription)
- Samsung Note 4 N910V LineageOS 16.0 Pie on Telekom network in Hungary on WiFi and Data
- Samsung Note 4 N910V LineageOS 16.0 Pie on GoogleFi roaming in Hungary on WiFi (cannot get LTE Network/Data connected to any tower)
- new device Google Pixel 2 XL Android Q on GoogleFi roaming in Hungary (will test in July)
On my home MikroTik router WiFi, where I run a domain and webserver, i forward port 80/443 to the webserver.
This is the only WiFi network, where I cannot use chat features for unknown reasons.
QUESTION: WHAT PORT(S) DOES RCS / CHAT FEATURES USE ON A WIFI NETWORK FOR COMMUNICATION TO OTHER PARTY AND THE PROVIDER SERVER (IN CASE OF FILE TRANSFER)
Google Fi support and Telekom HU Support dont understand the simple question or they resist to answer me, by replying constantly with the copy/paste of troubleshooting guides that I read all already. Either those are bot replies, or Google started to employ Level 1 people that are forced to reply automatic text. Telekom HU Support always was a big pain in the ass.
did you every figure it out?
Did you ever get this figured out? I've put my router in full DMZ and I still can't get RCS chat features to work on my home WiFi … but They USED TO WORK until a month or two ago... not sure when, It was my wife who noticed. tred 4 phones on 3 carriers, non work. many businesses have notices on the front doors too because it's killing employee's batteries while they work all day. Google refuses to answer.

I never succeeded yet
I assume (as a RCS novice) support has no idea what RCS is and Google has support agents that have also no idea and the people who developed this left the company or got kicked out...
I also think that my webserver port 80 and 443 causes this, I will try disabling the forward cause my webserver died waiting for replacement unit

I changed the forwarding to not forward ports 80 and 443 to a dedicated IP, still did not help
the router behind my mikrotik router and its wifi is capable of getting a status Connected
the mikrotik router itself and its wifi cannot get beyond Connecting...
I wonder if that might have to do something with IPv6?
Hi. After resetting the phone to factory settings, I can not turn on the chat features, the message configures is displayed, after a few attempts the message "confirm your number" appears, after three attempts the message "limit exceeded try again tomorrow" and so on overnight trying. Question Is network settings available through the dialer on the Pixl 6 Pro

Finally the Pixl 6 Pro is here but being able to use *#*#4636#*#* to access bands is an absolute must for me as a truck driver where I sometimes have to force 4g instead of lte on att to get a signal. My about to go into the trash OP9 is now so ruined by oxygen 12 that this vital option no longer works.
can anyone confirm google hasn't removed this option too?
TIA

That's exactly what I needed to know, so thank you
I use this app to do it for me even though 8 have the code saved it's the 2nd option
If anyone has Fi you can use this. Only way I got signal at work while the tower nearby was being worked on for nearly two weeks. Showed bars, had connection info in the basic settings. Timeout load times on everything from the log in app for work, chrome, any app that needed for than a few hundred kilobytes a min.

Handy app for tracking connections & utilizing Google Fi-relevant dialer codes

Monitoring for drops is useful considering you could just save the numbers that are Ctrl+v into the box for you.
