Google Pay on unlocked bootloader phone? - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

I unlocked my bootloader yesterday and all seemed good. Today I went to add my credit cards to Google Pay and no joy. I received a message that says "this phone is rooted or otherwise altered and Goole pay cannot be setup".
Anybody else experience this? Is this due to the Titan M chip? I appreciate any insight.
Cheers,
B.D.

Need magisk for this to work. Otherwise you'd have to relock as far as I know.

Got it. Guess I was spoiled by Magisk on my last phone. Ok, patiently waiting...
Thanks.

Please help me troubleshoot why Android Pay isn't working for me.

I Purchased the Pixel XL Directly from the google store.
It arrived in the mail just a few days ago
it is unrooted
I have not unlocked the bootloader
I am the 1st owner who set it up.
it is totally unaltered except I installed some basic apps like anyone would when they get a new phone.
when I try to add a debit card on the Pixel XL in the Android Pay app, it gives me the error message:
"Android Pay Can't be Used. Google is unable to verify that your device or the software running on it is Android compatible"
This is extremely frustrating, and this is very dissapointing to me, that a brand new Pixel XL, out of the box, after being setup cannot perform such a basic task as adding a debit card, especially since the O.S. is unaltered. and the bootloader has never been tinkered with and it is not rooted.
I called Google customer service but all they can tell me is that the error message is not supposed to come up unless the device is rooted. However my Device is NOT rooted, so what gives? nobody knows anything.
I come here as my last resort..... Will anyone please help me troubleshoot this. I would be most appreciative if anyone could help me troubleshoot this. Please & Thanks.

I didn't have this problem when I was on stock as a Verizon purchased Pixel XL owner.
However,
I am having the same problem since I rooted and unlocked the phone. I am running Verizon Pixel XL, Elements Kernel Version .7, TWRP Alpha 1.
Any help for the OP and myself would be greatly appreciated.

It's not going to work for you because SafetyNet sees you have an unlocked bootloader and non stock software.
Did u install all the Updates you got?

Edited duh missed bought from google part lol.
I would take screenshots showing bootloader is locked and tell google you have proof. Say if they dont want to fix this issue your going to file a chargeback with your credit card company that will change their tune right there.
I installed the OTA update for the November security updates (see attached image)
So you think the November security update messed it up??
I am seriously considering a factory data reset but I'd like to see if anyone has any other alternatives first that I might try
If you temp disable root, does it work then?
Anyone try Magisk, or is that not advisable with the pixel?
Thanks

I spoke to Google Customer service again, i once again repeatedly told them that I have never been rooted, the bootloader had never been tinkered with......... They finally escalated me and asked me to submit a bug report. So i'm following the bug report steps now........ However I am still very frustrated and just want this to work........ If anyone else has any other troubleshooting steps for me, please share with me. I have multiple google accounts on my phone just in case that makes any difference, but I dont think it should make a difference.

Did you try a factory reset?
I haven't tried a factory reset because I was hoping to resolve the issue without needing to factory reset.... I already submitted the bug report to Google, how long do you think it'll take them to respond with a solution for me? Or do you think a factory reset is worth it just to save the time and the wait....?

I gave up the waiting game and Finally decided to do a Factory Data Reset to see if that would fix it....
It did not work. I get the exact same error message from a fresh factory reset.... the only apps that updated were the ones that always update after a factory reset.... This time i made sure to only add 1 of my google accounts when setting up the device.... After the stock apps all updated themselves, and play services updated itself. I still got the same error message......... on a freshly reset unmodified, unrooted, stock Pixel XL with a bootloader that has never been tinkered with !!!
I am majorly dissapointed !
I'm issuing a $20 Cash REWARD payable through Paypal or Google Wallet to whichever person helps me troubleshoot this to my satisfaction (I'll be satisfied when I get the app to work the way it's supposed to work i.e. I can add a debit card)
Does anyone have any further ideas of things that I should do ?????
or is my only remedy, to sit and wait for Google's Bug report to make the rounds and they get back to me :crying:
I'm continuing to research and I stumbled upon someone else with my issue https://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus6P/comments/41sl7x/android_pay_cannot_be_used_google_is_unable_to/
However, they changed the DPI, and I did not.... so it still doesn't explain why this is happening to me.
I installed one of the apps one of the commentators suggested to check compatibility with SafetyNet
so I installed this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.scottyab.safetynet.sample&hl=en
and when I installed it and run the app, the SafetyNet check app tells me an error (See Screenshot)
Which leads me to another question.......... How in the world is it possible for SafetyNet error for AndroidPay in a fully stock, unaltered, unmodified, unrooted (bootloader never unlocked) Pixel XL ?????
Have you booted into the bootloader menu just to check the bootloader isn't unlocked for some reason?

so, I assume that were it says "Device is LOCKED" that means the bootloader is locked, am I right?
I clicked Restart Bootloader to see if that would solve anything............

That's correct!! OK so it's not the bootloader that's causing it! Do you have a figure in the display settings under the "display size"? Or just small etc

I should mention I clicked "Restart Bootloader" previously when you told me to boot directly to the bootloader, just to see if that did anything. and I just wanted to confirm with you that It did not affect anything, I am still getting the same error.

"Invalid Sim" now what

Newbie here, I have my MSL number from sprint. I put my cricket wireless sim card in the note 4 and it states that its invalid.
I tried all the standard troubleshooting: Different sim, light cleaning, etc
Called Sprint and they tell me its unlocked and I shouldn't have any issues
looked up my mei on ting or some other website and it says it will work
Just rooted the other day with TWRP, installed busybox
I have done some digging and cant find out how to get my phone on cricket wireless.
A point in the right direction would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Tried that method, no luck. I did see the thread on downgrading to kit Kat, but I'd rather not go through all that.

If you didn't pay for unlock yet, I got something you can try first. You'll need root and twrp and a root file manager.
Im not gonna make a big write up if i don't need to, so just let me know.
I have twrp and rooted. I'm game to try something before paying.

Sorry I can't help. I know it has to do with doing NV Rebuild from the service menu. I know how to get to it But i don't know exactly what you need to do. And i don't want to mess up anyone's phone.
I suggest following this thread here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/no...print-users-easy-downgrade-to-kitkat-t3471131
Or paying for Idone app.
Sorry, and good luck!

Did you try that downgrade thread? If so and it didn't work then i would say that paying Idone app would be your best option. That's what i used years ago. I know it cost money but i can vouch that their service and support is great and they stay up to date.
Did you try gt tools?
I did, at least Marshmallow, for some reason I could not flash back to KitKat. Anyway, no worries, I think I am just going to sell it and buy a used GSM one. Thanks a bunch.

I had the same issue and someone replied and said that the newest version of Google play services can detect unlocked bootloader. It works if you rollback to an older version but it may just be easier to wait until they update Magisk.

This was an issue on the stable release, so I switch to canary. As far as I know now, it should be resolved on stable with a wipe of data from google Pay but see this thread for more info - https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/discussion-google-pay-magisk-discussion-t3906703

Custom or stock rom? What kernel?
I am on HavocOS with Kirisakura kernel. Google pay working fine with latest update for me. I have seen other people discussing non-working google pay, and switching to a different kernel solved it for them.

What happens if you don't remove your cards and just clear storage for Google Pay and Google Services? It said it can't remove my card because it's associated with a service or subscription, likely from financing my p2xl through Google. Any other work around to get Google pay working?

I updated magisk. Still isn't working. Anyone else?
Ehm I have advice because I had this problem either. Just lock bootloader and it will work. But be carefull, if you have custom recovery than there is chance to brick device.
Still ongoing with no permanent solution yet. Its likely going to take an update to Magisk to fix.
All of the workarounds are temporary for a few days before things are detected again.

thats what google wants you to do when they soft brick your phone with an update and you cant reflash it and you have to pay $$$$$$$$ to fix something you could do for free the allow unlocking option was the worst thing that has happened to android at least before this was around you could recover phone but lose data but now os bricked and cant read state of toggle rip your phone!!! so no im not re locking my bootloader to have android pay work i want it to work but not bad enough to risk my phones safety

Just a heads up guys I've actually relocked and locked my bootloader multiple times maybe 4/5 times in the past month and never experienced no hard it soft bricks always went smoothly as long as you follow the instructions. Now I'm thinking of relocking again because Google pay is actually more important to me than root but if there's an update coming to fix Google pay them I'll wait.

yes your phone wont brick from re locking the problem comes down the line for an update or something like that i have unlocked and relocked bootloaders many times too but what happens when your phone soft bricks months later after an update and it can only get to fastboot and it cant be unlocked because the phone can read the state of the togggle in the os if unlocking is allowed rip phone

Alternate service to send in HTC 10 since Sunshine is down.

Is there another service to send in my HTC 10 since the service by Sunshine doesn't exist?
I am unable to unlock the bootloader, the Sunshine app gives me a failure. I have no OEM bootloader option in the developer tools. I've made several attempts using the various forums so I can root the phone without success. I feel it's time to send it out to someone who can assist me.

I only see that under the Unlock service page.
I do not see that stated anywhere on the s-off mail in service page, which is what I linked above.
It clearly states:

Sorry we only offer this service within Europe because in the past we have had bad experiences with peoples going missing in transit as well as large import duty tax bills here in the uk and your side too because the governments deem them taxable even though they are coming in for repair

I only know of a couple other shops that do it, but they are both also in the UK.
Other option, would be an XTC2 Clip/Power Adapter/Java Card, if they even still work after the HTC 10 has been updated to Oreo(not sure on that part).

Ebay. Do you have the procedure?
I've found this https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/unlock-your-htc-10s-bootloader-0178418/ after I read this thread, did you try that?
I'm a noob in a similar situation, have a completely stock non-branded Nougat and want to root and maybe install Viper or Lineage, but been putting it off cause I had to find a way to back up all the apps. Now I have to figure out a way to root/s-off quick, before my warranty runs out next month :S

If your htc 10 is still on Nougat and ISN'T a Verizon device, then I think you can use Sunshine to S-OFF, don't hold me too it, but I believe you can. :good:
just download the app and try it out, it won't take your $$ of anything if it doesn't work, can't hurt to try.
I believe it is not working for Oreo and Pie htc 10 variants, and Verizon is needed to do by mail I think unless they fixed it for Verizon N as well.
Don't remember. but the website still says they do mail in, but I don't think they still are.
Give it a try and report back.

Got this message:
Failure!
SunShine was unable to gain root access to your device. You may need to gain "TempRoot" or "PermRoot" through some other means. For HTC Devices, unlocking with HTCDev.com and rooting with a custom recovery may work.

You can 100% unlock the bootloader @ htcdev and flash custom ROMs, you don't need soff for that.
I wouldn't update from N firmware until you try a few things out.
Maybe unlocking bl and rooting then sunshine will work?

Ah, that's good, didn't know that.
I'm gonna wait a few more days for an answer from the devs of the last app on my phone that can't back up via adb and its own backup process is broken. After that I'm gonna do what you said.
Is the guide I linked above ok or is there maybe an XDA guide to doing that? I looked at the Guides subforum here but there's too much stuff and I've never rooted a phone b4 so I'm not sure which thread I'm supposed to be looking at :silly:

Yea since you have the US locked version, or I think that's what you meant by unbranded. What's your firmware (in download mode) x.xx.617.xx or x.xx.401.xx
Here is the link for bootloader unlock: https://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/

No, I've got the EU version (or I suppose I do, I bought it in the EU). I meant that I got it from a retailer, not a cell network company like Verizon, since I see those need some special treatment. Software number is 2.41.401.41

thought so. cus vivo's official customer service says root is not supported, anf by that they probably meant bootloader-unlocking
Maybe somebody can unlock bootloader and try to install magisk? So we can use gpay) (I've ordered this phone and it still hasn't arrived). I hope it'll work:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/general/rooting-roms/how-to-unlock-bootloader-vivo-phones-t3686690
Or we can try to certify phone with Google to get working gpay: https://www.google.com/android/uncertified/
1) You have to know gfs id. Google gives the instruction on there page. Another method is to know it through file manager /data/data/com.google.android.gsf/databases/gservices.db
2) After certifying phone you have to factory reset your phone. And now it would be certified with Google.
Root is necessary here to fix Google Pay that it seems VIVO won't fix himself
I also ordered the phone. Did anyone managed to get GPay working?
