USB-C Ethernet adapters - Google Pixel 3 Accessories

I know its still early in the release of the phone but i need an Ethernet adapter for the Pixel 3. My Anker brand (linked below) does not seem to work, however it did work on the Nexus 5x, and OG Pixel. Let me know if you guys found one that works.
https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Aluminum-1-Gigabit-Compatible-ChromeBook/dp/B00ZZ6NW5E

I have a hunch that they may have removed support for this as my USB-C Ethernet dongle does not work on my 3 either. It worked on the 2 XL.
I'll have to try my luck with a USB-C to USB 3.0 adapter -> USB 3.0 to Ethernet adapter.

Update: It didn't work. Tried 3 adapters overall.
Looks like the hardware changed or Google changed something in software to block it.

I just tried the USB-C to USB 3.0 adapter that came in the box as well as a StarTech USB 3.0 to ethernet adapter and my Pixel 3 XL recognized it and started using ethernet. Dunno what u guys are talking about.
https://www.amazon.com/USB-Gigabit-Ethernet-Network-Adapter/dp/B0095EFXMC/

I've got a TP-Link UE300 and it works as it did on Pixel XL.
(With a USB OTG adapters, as it's USB-A)

Saw your reply to me in a Disqus thread. It seems to vary per adapter.
All the adapters that I previously owned worked on my 2 XL but do not work on my 3. I bought the one you mentioned and while the 3 gains an ethernet connection, it is limited to USB 2.0 speeds for some reason.
I need it to work at gigabit speeds for it to work for my application at work.
If anyone can confirm an adapter that runs at a gigbit on the Pixel 3, I'd appreciate it! :highfive:

I'll try to test mine with moving a huge file between my laptop and the Pixel 3, both connected to the Gigabit modem.
Speed results later today or tomorrow lol

I have tried several different adapters now. Still can't convince the Pixel 3 to operate at gigabit speed.
Reached out to Google for info, got nothing useful:
Kate W4:48 PM
I understand that you have a query related to the internet connection with Pixel 3 device.
Kris Yadao4:48 PM
Yes
Kate W4:49 PM
I see that you are using USB cables to connect internet, is that correct?
Kris Yadao4:50 PM
I have a couple USB-C to Ethernet adapters.
Kris Yadao4:51 PM
as well as some USB-C to USB 3.0 Type A adapters that I use to connect to USB 3.0 Type A to Ethernet adapters
Kate W4:51 PM
Oh, I see.
Kris Yadao4:52 PM
I have been using a Pixel 2 XL for the past year for testing gigabit connections at work. These adapters have worked with that model of Pixel just fine
Kate W4:52 PM
Okay.
Kate W4:53 PM
Kris, I am a Pixel 3 Specialist and will be able to help you with any query related to the device or any feature on the device. Since you are referring to a third party cable or adapter, my scope of support is limited here.
Kris Yadao4:53 PM
I understand that it is a bit of an obscure use case. The Pixel 2 XL has been the only phone I've found where this works.
Kate W4:53 PM
Okay.
Kris Yadao4:54 PM
Was hoping the Pixel 3 would retain this functionality but it seems like it may be gone. Was just hoping to find more info about how this works inside of Android, but I understand if it's not well documented.
Kate W4:55 PM
Kris, as you are using third party cables and adapters, we do not suggest them because they can damage the device.
Kate W4:56 PM
I would have definitely helped you with the information if the issue is with the device or it's feature. Let me check for more information on this.
Kate W4:58 PM
I have checked for the information and it seems that we do not support such functionality on the device.
Kate W4:58 PM
I regret any inconvenience.
Kate W4:59 PM
You can send a feedback on this feature from the settings of the device.
Kate W4:59 PM
Our Engineering team will receive your feedback and might work on the feature if there are more feature requests for the same.
Kate W5:00 PM
Kris, I will also submit a feedback for you.
Kate W5:00 PM
Would there be anything else I may help you with today?
Kris Yadao5:00 PM
I understand Google's stance on accessories. There is no first party option from Google for Ethernet connection and Ethernet seems to be supported in the Android OS as it does recognize when it is connected. I would appreciate if you could pass that feedback along.
Kris Yadao5:01 PM
Thanks for your info. That's all the help I need.
Kate W5:01 PM
I will surely let my team know about this feature.
Kris Yadao5:01 PM
Thank you
Kate W5:01 PM
I appreciate your understanding in this matter!

When you connect the Pixel 3 via ethernet, does it work only for the basic apps, or are all apps able to detect and utilize the ethernet connection?
I'm considering getting a Pixel 3 but I want to know a little more about its ethernet compatibility. Thanks in advance.

This was an important feature to me, so I tested several adapters. I think it depends on the chipset. Every adapter I tried with the AX88179 chipset worked so far. mcbeat257 reported that the StarTech USB 3 adapter worked, and this is also AX88179.
matteventu reported a TP-Link UE300 working, which is the RTL8153 chipset. I haven't tested one of those, but it's a popular chipset and might also work reliably.
The nicest of the ones I used successfully was this one from Plugable, which goes straight to USB-C without any extra adapter. (I am unable to post the link directly, so you will have to reassemble it.) www amazon com /gp/product/B011DDXGVC/
I also ran a speed test, and I got 295 Mbps download, 202 Mbps upload, 6ms ping. The same ethernet adapter plugged into a laptop gave gigabit performance and 1ms ping, so the speed limitation here appears to be the Pixel 3.
One thing I could not figure out how to get working is calling over ethernet. Calling over wifi works, but it does not seem to kick in for ethernet. If anyone has insight on how to do this, I would love to hear it.

I can also confirm the Pixel 3 XL works with the TRENDnet TU3-ETG with a Type A Female to Type C Male adapter my Pixel came with, it has the same AX88179 Chip set.
However I would like to see USB tethering to work through the adapter so I can provide a wired Ethernet WAN connection from my phone to a Computer or Router.

Anyone get USB on-the-go (HOST) working

The European SGII does USB hosting with the proper adapter. I ordered this one
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GGBYJ4
nothing happens when I connect my phone to a FAT 32 formatted thumb drive. The thumb drive works in my Acer Iconia.
I wonder if I got a bad adapter or if Sprint disabled On-The-Go.
I can't seem to get it working either. Anyone know a way to enable it. I really wanted this phone for this feature.
from what I've seen on youtube the "host" message pops up as soon as the cable is plugged in. No enabling required. These were all European SGSII though. Samsung's own Epic 4G touch claims it works
http://www.samsung.com/us/article/tips--tricks-epic-4g-touch#CLIP
No host for Sprint & TMO
Client only per PDADB.net
AT&T will get the OTG host capabilities.
WHAT! WTF. That means the samsung site is wrong or Sprint actually went out of their way to disable this feature.
There has to be a way to re-enable it like what was done on the HTC HD2. I hope the source proves useful in providing the solution to unlock the feature which is advertised.
The review model AnandTech had appeared to have USB host working ... so if it doesn't work on store models, it should be a firmware issue.
Note that I don't have an E4GT, I'm just thinking with you.
If on the E4GT, you can find "DSLR Controller" in the market, at least the firmware reports that it is supporting USB host ... (if it doesn't, the app will not show up in Market)
Thanks for the issue. How difficult would it be for someone to work on a firmware modification? What does it entail? Where would one start?
crap. that was also one of the main points i decided to upgrade. also i had just moments before ordered that same USB host...
DSLR Controller beta shows up in the market from my phone.

Well then, as I said, the phone is actually reporting to Google that it does support USB host. Maybe they made some other mistake ? The Xoom on Android 3.1 has the same issue, USB host only half works (fixed in 3.2)
EDIT: Also, have you considered bad cables? I have read recently a lot of these OTG cables are pretty crappy and may not work. Note that popping in just the OTG cable without anything attached should already flash a notification at you (though the actual popup only happens when you connect a device)
yes I considered it.
my original post "I wonder if I got a bad adapter or if Sprint disabled On-The-Go."
I have another cable on the way so I will rule it out. It would still be nice to see if only me and JAmerican have this issue, Is it disabled? Did we get broken phones?

I doubt our phones are defective. I believe Sprint disabled the feature. The cable I have works because I used it on my Treo 800w and had no problems.
Just tried the cable and drive in a E4GT demo in a Sprint store. No host message.

Samsung shows USB Host support here:
(sorry, cant post outside links, yet)
samsung.com/us/article/tips--tricks-epic-4g-touch#USB
I have five different OTG cables, none work. Must be a firmware issue.
I do have three SGSII OTG cables.
Update: Just emailed Samsung Support... We wait...
If host is disabled (and it looks that way) I doubt there is anything we can do about it. There is NO mention of USB Host on any Sprint website or publication. It does look like the hardware is capable so maybe someone will grab the European drivers and roll them into a flashable update.

I fear that Samsung will just remove it from their site and deny such a feature exists on the Sprint version.
there could be hope http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265429&page=18
I believe that Sprint/Samsung disabled this feature because when I checked the Samsung website it showed the micro USB to USB cable and from one day to another (the supported devices) changed from the Epic 4G touch to the Att and T-Mobile variants

RJ45 USB will it work ?

Will the USB Connector support a USB RJ45?
I guess a driver will be needed
Reason for asking is because i need a tablet that i can wire up and i want to get the Tab 10.1
I would love to see this work too.

HUMMM, not sure if i am willing to accept that..
It must be a way we can make it happen.
If you need to connect to a RJ45 jack, I suggest getting a "LAN to WiFi Hotspot" Adapter like the LogiLink Wireless LAN Mini AP Router. You can get one for about 22€ and it's a great, little travel device for use in hotels that only offer internet via LAN. For me that's a much more convenient solution than trying to put my tablet on a leash.

Speaking to my local linux expert he says the kernel I have has some axis drivers built in and I need to either get that exact adapter or a kernel which doesn't have drivers already built in so I can insert my own.
So not lost yet but the battle continues.

These work well for lan connections in hotels:-

R
If you're talking about hotels and such (NOT corporate, where WiFi will face policy issues) -
Almost any cheap wifi router will work if you need to bridge a hardwire LAN. Honest, for the cost you're spending on hardware and headache... $25 for a cheap router and you're done.
Just remember - if you plan to actually bridge them (plugging the LAN into the PC ports, NOT the cablemodem port as you'd do at home), remember to turn off the router's DHCP before doing so.

This is what i needed! Ordering USB addon to my Tab and a usb rj45, and when all is received its time for some kernel playing!!
Will keep this tread updated
Final update on this one, we have had it working using the Samsung 30 pin to USB and a Axis USB to ethernet dongle.
This worked on version 3.1 as the driver from the asus transformer thread was written for that kernel when we updated to 3.2 it all went wrong.
Recently i have been doing some work with Samsung mobility and they have escalated this to the researchers in Korea they removed the support on purpose from the standard 3.2 rom as there was a feeling it wasn't required.
However they are currently looking at if they can include it in the ICS release and are also looking at how complicated it is to create us a dock which has a Ethernet port built in given i want to get 250 galaxies working on a wired connection. Obviously if they create it for us they would also release it for general sale in some way which would be a massive win for the galaxy and the potential for use within the IT industry.
@Banathe, can you tell Me how it went with Samsung mobility. I have the same situation. Client wants some about 300 devices, but also wants the ability to access LAN (to configure TV boxes through tablet, and this can be done only by LAN cable). Can You tell me exactly with which tablet and adapter You managed to have a connection and what is a result of Your research?

OnePlus One and HDMI - MHL, Slimport, none?

Would a OnePlus 3 USB Type-C OTG adapter work for OnePlus 2?

Been trying to get the damn OTG thing to work, but no luck. After a lot of searching around XDA forums, among other places, came to the realisation that only the official OnePlus MicroUSB to Type-C adapter supports OTG. Too bad they don't sell them anymore and I can't find any elsewhere online.
They do sell a newer version for the OP3 on their online store and I was wondering if that would work too. I ask because I've already got a thousand cables and adapters I've tried that didn't work, so I don't wanna drop any more cash on this.
Tried to contact OP support and they didn't really seem to understand what I wanted and just said it would work "because it's USB Type-C". Yeah, so were all the other damn cables I bought.

SGS9/+ OTG and HDMI Out Simultaneously?

Hello,
We're in the market for phone upgrades. I currently have a Pixel XL and my spouse still has his Nexus 5x. We're giving some thought to the SGS9+, if we can find a BOGO type deal as TMO did several times last year. While they aren't that exciting, I do like the addition of Samsung Pay that works with any strip reader and some of the other features (though we aren't completely sold on it yet).
We're traveling and typically bring a streaming stick which works in most places. But the internet in our current place is just too show so it doesn't work at all. We happened to have an external hard drive with some media files on it but we're currently having to use a Windows laptop to run the files since the stuck doesn't have a USB in.
I'm wondering if it's possible to use the SGS9+ as an OTG to read the external hard drive while using the HDMI out at the same time? Can I charge too? Would some sort of a USB C dock work for this? Or something else? Thanks so much in advance!

Maybe to late of a reply, but i think your refering to the samsung dex pad. It has 2 usb ports, 1 hdmi out, ethernet. Phone connects to dock via usb c. Kind of expensive tho $99. You can also buy a generic version that does the same thing on amazon for $30. It doesnt look as pretty, but functionality is the same.
