Colors/Screen quality ? - Xiaomi Mi Max 3 Questions & Answers

Hi,
After a week using my new Mi Max 3, I noticed that the screen colors are not as good as my good old Redmi Note 3 Pro.
Can it be a software issue or is it just the quality of the screen ? (my Mi Max 3 run on official Miui 10 Global Stable and my RN3P runs Xiaomi.eu Miui 10 dev rom).

As you can see, the colors and shadows of the exact same picture displayed on both phones are looking waaaay better on RN3P.
I was on the same screen settings (max brightness and high contrast), my RN3P also seems to be a bit more brighter (even though you probably can't see it on the pic) and my Mi Max 3 has a yellow tint that bugs me.
Could this be because of the software ? Xiaomi.eu on my Mi max 3 could help to solve this or not ?
Thanks for your help and do not hesitate to share about colors and screen quality of your Mi Max 3.

same result comparing my mi max 2 and max 3
max 2 screen colors are way better and more saturated

Saturated does not mean better. I use standard contrast for the best accuracy; mi max 3 is actually one of the top phones when it comes with accuracy out of the box in this mode. gsmarena reviewed the screen https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_mi_max_3-review-1809p3.php
Increased contrast mode does remove some of the cold blue tint, bringing the average deltaE down to 4.4 and a maximum of 9. Pretty good, but we can probably do better, with some fiddling with the manual white point controls, Xiaomi so graciously provides. Luckily, before we started messing with those, we gave the "Standard contrast" mode a try and it left us truly amazed. An average deltaE of 1 and a maximum of 2.1. Those are values even most flagships struggle with. Especially out of the box. Xiaomi deserves plenty of praise in the color accuracy category.

So the standard mode is supposed to be better ?
Why do my screen looks even more yellowish on standard if the high contrast mode remove some blue light ?
Can someone show me some pics of their screen (with white menu background to compare) ? I'm starting to think that my screen has an issue

Leave it to automatic contrast - don't mess with that. Then go to Additional settings/Developer Options/Picture Color Mode/Use srgb - turn on. This is the best setting because in daylight it pumps up saturation to help you see in difficult sunlight while maintaining srgb color the rest of the time. Try it.

Thank you ! I thought you were refering to standard mode and not automatic.
However, in developper options I don't have the picture color mode line

Maybe it's a xiaomi.eu option. I'm on 8.8.9 xiaomi.eu. Maybe try flashing the latest xiaomi.eu if you're already on ARB.

[Q] How to make screen brighter

Is there any way to make the screen brighter like increase the maximum brightness i find the screen to dim for my liking
On Verizon Galaxy Nexus with Fruit and Vegetable rom
Poor screen bright
Hi,
I purchases a Nexus last week and also noticed a very poor bright on the screen, like a joke. I went back to the shop and took a look on another 2 Nexus, finding the same problem. All of them were brand new
It came with ICS 4.01, after updating to 4.04 and make a hard reset, the screen became much brighter than before. I thought the problem was solved, but after only 5 minutes it went back gradually to the dark scene. Even at maximum bright, it was really dark. So I guessed there was something wrong with the kernel or the stock rom. Maybe the paranoia to "save the planet" makes the system to low down the brightness screen.
However, I have a friend with same phone and his screen is as bright than can not be seen at night without almost burning your eyes. So I asked for which rom he was using and I install the same one. And Hooooops !!! VERY very bright after the first reboot. Try it, it works. It is working for more than 1 week without dimming the brightness again. Here's the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1748823
Install Franco.Kernel & buy the app.
Then boost one of em to 400. Your screen will be 2x brighter.
Enjoy

Make sure the checkbox for auto brighness is unchecked and the slider is all the way to the right under settings => display => brightness. If the brighness is changing on you, then it is probably set to auto.

I don't recommend that in any way... Yes, it will make the screen brighter, but this will burn-in the screen 2 times faster than 200 (Which is default)....

[Q] About those viewing angles...

Hi to all
I'm pretty new to the tablet market and I just bought the note 10.1 2014. I'm in my first 14 days where I can exchange/return my tablet and I want to make sure everything is ok with my stuff.
I've read countless online reviews before making my choice and, as you all know, one of the strongest aspect of the note 10.1 2014 is the display. Most if not everybody is praising the resolution, the colors, minimal color shifting, brightness and the viewing angles. Now, I want to make sure my understanding of lcd displays/viewing angles is good.
My tablet's display is gorgeous... when I look at it straight at it. I have the minimal light bleed on the edge which only shows on black and has 0 impact on colors which I'm ok with (all demos in stores are the same so...) As soon as I tilt the tablet though (vertically or horizontally), colors become very dull. Actually, colors do not shift but everything becomes dimmer/duller. Now, I suspect this is normal behavior from a backlit LCD but still, I keep reading reviews stating the display is gorgeous and bright even from an angle which is not 100% right for mine. I've tried to look at videos/pictures online but most people doing reviews actually setup a camera right in front of the tablet and barely move it once it's turned on so it's not helping me. So when you guys are saying the tablet's display stays vivid and colorful from every angle, are you getting the same kind of behavior my tablet has and are not talking about this because this is normal behavior for an LCD display or is my tablet's display defective?
Thank you very much in advance for your cooperation. If needed, I could take pictures.

As is typical of the Samsung displays, the viewing angle stability is great. The colors remain stable regardless of the viewing angle and we did not note any great loss in brightness.

Thank you very much for your reply. Well, I guess my tablet's screen is pretty similar to the test unit provided in the review. My definition of stable brightness and colors is pretty different from the behavior of that display But to know my screen behaves normally compared to other tablets is good to know.
Just enjoy this tablet..Don't spend hours looking for problems that arent there. This tablet is wonderful , I have had mine since December with no issues at all. I'm rooted with tons of stuff on mine. Most of the problems I have been reading about are people with way too much time on their hands. Have a beer , and love your tablet!!

Don't get me wrong here, maybe I did put too much emphasis on the display and I'm sorry about this. I love my tablet too. I'm just discovering the power of the tablet and the S-Pen, the integration is pretty amazing.
Cheers

Contrast (true blacks)

How well do you know your fifty shades of grey? Rate this thread to express how good the ZTE Axon 7's display contrast is. A higher rating indicates that black is true black, rather than a very dark gray.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I am coming from an amoled screen, yet I am amazed at how black the black is on the a7. Using tbo Blacked Out apps are a no brainer.
Sent from my ZTE A2017U using XDA-Developers mobile app
It's an Amoled screen, meaning the pixels are off when displaying black. The blacks are...black.
What are the best color accuracy settings for the display?
I'll go against the grain and say I'm mildy disappointed in the Axon 7's blacks. Vividness and high contrast are appealing to the eye, but so much detail is lost.
http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php
Above is a series of tests I use on all my displays. My TV and PC monitor are calibrated to have every black box visible on the above test. My Nexus 5 phone has all but the last box visible. My Axon 7 on the other hand loses six boxes which blend into the background.
I honestly don't think this is a limitation of AMOLED hardware but likely the software configuration. I would be happy if ZTE released an sRGB calibration tool like OnePlus did for their OnePlus 3.
You can watch night scenes from The Dark Knight, B v S, Zero Dark Thirty, etc and really notice how much dark detail you're losing on the Axon 7.
I specifically remember a B v S scene where Batman is in his jet fighting Doomsday. A shot of Batman in his cockpit looks near completely black on the Axon: you lose all the detail of his cowl/mask, and the inside of the cockpit.

Seriously? You used an LCD test for an AMOLED panel? No wonder your results don't make sense at all

Your judgement is misguided. The blacks test on the link I provided was not designed for any specific display technology. It says LCD test because it was posted online before AMOLED existed. It shows how the TV salesman trend of pumping up contrast, vividness, and saturation creates deficiencies in picture accuracy.
https://community.zteusa.com/thread/12745
On ZTE community there are several members who observed the same. It's especially noticeable to professionals in film, TV, and photography who are used to having colour/tone accurate displays.
If you put brightness to the max, you will see all the squares. With default brightness, near to the minimum, I lose 4-5 boxes (the first row).
That test is brightness dependent.
Ah, and I did it without the ambient being dark.

For my Axon 7 I don't get the same results: on 100% brightness I still don't see the six boxes in a dark environment. Changing the brightness on this phone has no effect on contrast or gamma.

Does the nougat update fix the youtube lip sync issue?

Also does nougat allow you to calibrate the color of the screen?
Yes it fixes the sync. No unfortunately no calibration of screen just the regular two modes. I also want color control as I want to make my screen a little cooler. We can just hope for a custom kernel in the future that allows this. ElementalX dev has stated he won't make anything for the P2.

If mine would had been just a tad warmer I would have thought about doing the same. But in "vibrance" mode it's good enough (barely). I can stand it as the eye gets a little used to it.
There are ways to make it a little cooler anyway. Check the app Screen Balance. It will mess with your blacks but not very much if you keep the opacity <50%. It's a tradeoff but it can help.

Actually that's what I've been using, it makes the black looks like dark blue...
The screen just isn't that good, not sure why so many people jump on the amoled bandwagon
LCD is more color accurate, no risk of burn in, the white looks so much better and the quality of LCD is always consistent unlike amoled which varies everytime.

I completely agree with you on every point. I'm an LCD person too for the same reasons.
Though I have to say I'm happy overall with this screen because of one reason, it's the most uniform screen I've ever had including all LCD phones I've had and they are a lot. My screen is pretty much perfect i never get this lucky certainly not with Amoled.

The sync issue is fixed and I don't have any problems with the screen. For many years everybody was loving the oversaturated amoled Samsung screens, but now there are opinions that some prefer lcd. Well it's a personal preference, lcd screens have bad black color and also drain more battery regardless what you're doing on your phone.

Question edge bleeding at low brightness

Hello, tonight i was configuring my youtube app and i noticed very bad colors at the edge of the display, when the background is grey. I was in a complete dark room, the problem is most noticable when brightness is about 15%. And no, its not only the app. The bad colors are visible at a brightness from 0% to 50%.
Do you guys also have this problem?

The Mi 8 has it also, that is screen uniformity. It is hardware and it seems very common the last few years. I don't have it on my Oneplus 7 pro but it is also present on the Oneplus 8, Xiaomi Mi 9 etc.
Some folks say it is normal on oled but it isn't.
Why are the no problems with oled on Oneplus 7 pro, Samsung s10+?
I have same in low brightness don't worry.

so your unit doesnt have this issue?
i have the same problem, always visible when you have a dark(not black) background, note i had before 1 samsung s2,s4,a5 (the a5 when i was watching a movie in dark scene i could see a yellow brightness in one corner,it was awfull)and a tablet from the same manufacturer and all had the same probleme but at different level,my last Mi9t was parfect and screen didnt show that but my new F3 has it ,one side is clearer than the other one
As far as I know it is because of the AMOLED manufacturing tolerances, it seems to be really hard to get a perfect uniform display.
It shows at low brightness with grey screen especially.
Discussion also happend with the Mi 8 here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...moled-uniformity-issues-etc-for-mi-8.3843180/
Lol, I was just about to start a topic about this when I saw yours. Only dark gray backgrounds and top left is brighter then bottom right. Disappears at about 25% brightness. On the photo it seems green but not to the eye...
So if I send the phone back I'll most likely receive a new one with the same issue?

Lol, as u can see, my issue is in the same area, but mirrored.
I think, if u send the phone back, maybe u will get one with the same issue on diffrent corners. Only if u r lucky, u will get a good screen but then maybe the vibration motor starts crackling xD
I will keep my phone, cuz everything is fine for now
Well, yes, I'm a nitpicker really and there's always a small problem with a device it seems. I can't find anything else so I guess I'll settle for a small uniformaty of the screen. After all it's only with gray and in a dark surrounding. When watching a dark scene in a movie in inperceptable and maybe I can switch more elements to black using a custom rom (hope lineageOS will show up).
And maybe when there's a way to do DC dinning and not PWM it'll be better....

It is in general really hard to get a perfect display, be it on phones or on PC monitors.
Also TN and IPS panels show their weaknesses at "grey" colors, it makes the uniformity visible to the human eye.
Additionally trails and overshoot of moving objects on a grey background are most noticeable.
Not sure why "grey" is so devastating
I don't know. I'm from NL and here we have a lot of "grey areas" so guess I'll have to get used to it
Mine has a similar grey gradient visible at low brightness and solid colors, but it doesn't seem to be discernible in anything but settings. My old phone has a "perfect" oled though, so it's definitely possible.
Solid colors seems fine, or my eyes don't perceive it...
Probably the same case as processor cores: bins. Maybe they pay less for getting screens that are not 100% uniform?
