Is the notch the same size as the chin on the Pixel 3 XL? - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

I know the phone has an ugly notch. I also know it can be blacked out in developers settings, I saw the video by Unbox Therapy where Lew "hid" the notch.
It looked a bit larger than the chin in the video, at least to my eye. Is that the case, or are the top and bottom bezel as symmetrical as the Pixel 3? Or is the notch deeper than the chin?

I looked at them at the Verizon store the other day. That was one thing I was looking for. I definitely plan on blacking out those two sides. without using a ruler, to the naked eye I would say they're pretty close to exact if not exactly the same size.
And just in case anybody was interested. I compared it to my 6p and the top of the bezel to the bottom of the notch is about the same distance as the top of the 6p to the top of the screen. Not insanely big

Thanks. Yeah I'm not going to fuss over a few millimeters in difference. I don't really mind the notification bar being pushed down if it means there's more space for notifications. Might actually prefer that compared to just having the notification bar blacked out like how I have it on my OnePlus 6.
I feel like it looks bigger in pictures/videos that focus on it more than it would IRL when you aren't trying to look for it, if that makes any sense. Going to go check it out at a Freedom Mobile store probably Friday.

It definitely looks worse in pics. But it's still bad. What bothers me the most is, why don't at all if the 3 doesn't have it. When iPhone did it there was out rage and everyone mocked them. Now we got everyone doing it.. it's sad that one plus is the only ones to figure out how to minimize it. The tear drop cut out on the 6t is almost sexy.

Right? If the 3 had the same battery as the 3 XL I'd be leaning towards it. I don't mind bezels that size. I like having something to hold on to. Seems like they did it just to do it on the 3 XL. Because everyone else is. The bezels on the 2 XL are perfect, IMO.
The thing about the water drop notch is it sacrifices functionality for looks (ie no notification LED, no stereo speakers). It does look very nice. But the 6's notch grew on me.

I checked with done calipers and the notch is 1mm deeper than the chin.

Looks like we won't get the Black or Blue (even though Blue was never confirmed) models. That's slightly annoying.
Yep not about to spend 500+ on a phone with a color I am not crazy about. Think it's terrible how Verizon has treated the Htc One thus far. From polls I have see looks like a 50/50 split of people who prefer silver or black. And sure enough Verizon finds a way to piss off half that group who have already waited months to get this phone.
I really wanted the blue. In the end though... It's still a One.
I don't like black phones so this is perfect for me.
In person the Silver model is cheap and ugly looking compared to what I had seen on youtube, but the Black model is extremely sleek and classy (this is my own opinion, don't get your panties in a bunch if you don't agree). If they don't roll out a black version within a month I'm just going to get the S4 again I think. I know that color seems a silly reason not to get a phone but I'm the sort of person who holds on to electronics for a very long time so this will bug me endlessly.

The black is not classy. It looks like a stealth bomber. You can't call a stealth bomber classy. The Black One is not sleek. It is hardcore, serious, and deadly. /joke
The S4 is not bad. It tried a friends today. No lag whatsoever. It was hard to reach the corners of the screen, but that's just me. Thing is, it felt extremely light. Not sure if that's good or bad.

I actually had the S4 for a week and returned it (before any development happened) and it was a great phone minus the Touchwiz stuff and lag (it DID lag at the time but that was before Samsung pushed updates out). If I got it again I would pretty much be running either stock 4.3 or Cyanogenmod. The things that attracted me to the One were build, speakers, LCD screen quality, and Sense 5 being a smooth minimalist skin compared to bloated Touchwiz. S4 in my opinion is better for screen size (wider vs skinny), repair-ability, expansion, camera, button placement, and development support (more popular=more development). First world problems eh?
Oh and yeah it was really lightweight. I liked that because I put my phones in cases so it makes it seem less bulky than perhaps a heavier phone would. Strangely it was lighter than my 2 year old Fascinate that's half its size... not sure what black magic they did to make that happen.

This whole thread is a big FWP. I don't want to buy this phone because, while it's better in almost(actually less than almost, both have pros and cons) every regard, it isn't in the color I like.
But, you're paying First world prices, so it's justifiable. I think the silver (which should really be called clear or natural) looks good in a sort of minimalist type of way.
Silver is the color of the bare metal. The black is just color on top, but the silver shows the true color of the phone.

Yeah I agree with you on that, I like the silver color of the metal but I think what ruins it for me most is the white plastic trim. I think it would have looked a lot better with a darker grey or even black plastic trim instead of white which will get dirty really easily and in the future turn a disgusting yellowish tint. For some reason in person it really looks cheap with the way it all came together, where as the black one actually looked premium. Of course, like you said it is just color so the major drawback is if you manage to dent or scratch it it'll look a lot more beat up than the silver one. I'm the sort of person to use cases so odds are mine will stay really nice... in fact I've had 2 Seidio cases since August 1st because I had false hope that they would have released it that day! :crying:

only issue I have with black is the same one I had with my iPhone 5 before I sold it - the black scratches right off to reveal the same 'cheap' silver underneath, and pretty easily. Put it on a table and slide it across, and it'll come off if the table has any texture at all...
I think the color is very important and not just because of a preference.
When watching videos you want the picture to blend in with the background. The silver sticks out like a sore thumb.
How many of you here would want an led tv with a silver frame as opposed to one in standard black?
i understand wanting that choice. to me, ive been waiting long enough, and i dont mind that visibility. honestly, i liked my white ipad more than my black iphone when i had them. also my led tv is silver - but its the thin bezel cinema screen

I've got to disagree. I've had several white phones and I never thought 'man I wish my phone was black so the video blended in.'
I'm looking at the video on the screen, not the phone. A black phone doesn't make the video any larger.
Hope the blue still comes out.
I want an announcement. What I don't want to have to wait another month and find out that they will never have black in their stores. Could be that they don't want to make one right now because they want it to sell in it's inferior color. I don't think so, and not even for profit.
Just ordered mine this afternoon. Been sitting on an upgrade since April. Was considering the Moto X but I'm sick of plastic phones and I think the screen is going to be much better on the One - true 1080p. Coming from the Dinc 4G its gonna be a little bigger but worth it for the screen. See you all in the Dev site.

Huawei watch display comparison

Hey guys, I work for best buy and bought the huawei watch after some reps for the company came in to show us the Mate 7 and the watch. I ordered the mesh band and love the subtlty of the watch, but I noticed the colors are quite muted for an amoled panel compared to the urbane I had. Can anyone compare the two for me to prove I'm not crazy? Like with a Facebook notification comparison? The blues I'm sure are distinctly different between the two panels. Just want to make sure I don't have a faulty panel.

I loved the urbane except for looks, the lugs I felt were manufactured way too thick. I'll probably also return the huawei and test the gear s2s classic. If I don't like that one its back to the urbane.

Disagree about the lugs, looks like most big high end watches today. I thought I would like the higher resolution and .1 in bigger display on the huawei, but I don't. Bummer.

I agree with what you are saying about the looks on the lugs. Me with my ridiculously small guy wrists means it really stands out at least on my arm. Apple watch is like the square version of huawei that's why I like the size so much.
I agree with the screen quality and noticed it right away. (not that you still think you're crazy now, lol) Having said that, I am keeping mine because I like how it looks in dim mode, which is what displays 99% of the time. Yes, I still find my Urbane and LGR better but this is still a very nice screen IMO...just needs a color calibration.

Im wondering if it has anything to do with the sapphire glass??? Sapphire glass tends to have a slight titn, along with anti reflective properties.

Could be....it's not dramatic but I'll admit, the colors tend to look washed out a little. (scale of 1-10 for color quality, I'd still give it a 7) Regarding the lugs, I agree

I liked mind but it looked too much like a smart watch to me it was as wife as my wrist in a noticeable way. The Huawei is about as wide but it looks better. I'm enjoying mine more than I did my LG but that's because of the styling and the crown position is a plus

That's what I like about the Huawei. IMO, the Urbane looks like a smartwatch only because the Bezel was just thrown in there, should've been raised! (I still like it) The LGR is much better and looks/feels like a regular watch! Of course to me the winner is the Huawei but the LGR is a close second! I switch watches daily anyway, lol.
Just went back to my urbane, The screen is SO much better. Not sure WTF huawei did with this screen, but its pale colors, and dim brightness are a dealbreaker. Maybe if I didnt own an urbane, I wouldnt know what i am missing.

I tried to see it and could not. I don't have a camera to take a long exposure with, though, but frankly if that is what it takes to see it, I am not all that concerned.
Edit: referring to the red tint thing.
Edit again: OK, I was able to reproduce the red tint. Don't think its a big deal at this point unless the red sub-pixels burn out.

I think whether or not it's a big deal is definitely an opinion that changes per user and that's fine. Right now I'm just trying to confirm that is does affect all devices.
Bottom line is it is a defect and not how OLED is supposed to work. It bothers me personally for a few reasons but Huawei has yet to give details on why it is happening and how it can be fixed so I don't know if I should return my watch or keep and hope.
I almost wonder if it is some kind of dumb underflow issue. Or, they intentionally add a little red to the screen to enhance low light visibility, but over simplified the approach a bit too much. Or the driver for the screen leaks some voltage. Who knows at this point.

Should I buy one ? I have some specific questions

Hello mates.
Here is the deal:
I always used android phones. I am now using an iphone 7 for 12 months now and I am pretty happy with cam, performance and haptic.
But as I wrote, I really miss android, especially now with all the new oreo functions.
I dont want to spent another 1000 EUR just to buy another phone, and I dont want to sell my iphone.
I can buy the pixel xl (new 128 gb) for 450 EUR ( thats a good price here in germany )
But I have 2 concerns, and the problem is, I can get a hand on a pixel :
Is it that thick ? MY IPhone is 1mm thinner and I really felt in love with this slim phone. Do you guys mind the thickness ? Is it still ok or does it filly a little chunky ?
The bezel on the bottom: Is it that big ? I mean, I dont need a fancy screen to body ratio, I actually like bezels because I am watching a lot of netflix on stuff woth my phones.
Could you give me just your opinion : Should the bezel and the thickness stop me from buying this awesome phone ?
thx
To be honest, I don't mind the bezels or the thickness of the phone, and I came from the Nexus 6p, which was a little over 1mm thinner. The bezels that people complain about being too big, I actually like because I can hold it between my thumb and finger without having to worry about a touch registering on the screen.
When Google replaced my 6p with a pixel XL, I had my fiance try it for a weekend, and she hasn't picked up her S8 in over 2 months since. She was hesitant because of the huge bezels as well, and because of the lack of the Samsung apps she became comfortable with (she's not into specs and all that). After a few weeks, she came home from work and said she really likes how smooth Android operates on the phone, along with the consistent battery life and lack of bloat (her S7 and S8 could be great at times, or barely breathing after a long day; each day with the same usage pattern).
I would say go for it, overall we both love it.

thank you very much for the reply
I really think, there is a reason for me to have some kind of bezels, and to be honest, i dont like the shape of the bigger screens like xl2 and s8, but this is just a personal preference
I am just afraid by the thickness, I dont want a phone, that feels like from 2010 thats all
I also planned to wait until next week for the opo 5t --- but i dont know. something os always wrong with oneplus .. camera, display .. and i guess .. there is no software or hardware problem with the pixel ..
wtf .. I am ordering now ...
Idk man, I hear great things about the op5. The one OP5t should shape up to be a great device.
I love my pixel to death, but If I were you, I'd probably wait until the 5t drops and read some reviews on it before making your decision.
Thickness and bezels are not an issue for me at all and I'm using the XL. Sure, it's a big phone and a waste of space but I actually didn't mind the design once I started using the phone.
And even stock oreo is probably the best thing to come from Google. Pixel xl runs it flawlessly.
Thickness and bezels don't bother me either. Considering you're happy with the 7plus, if be surprised if the bezels bothered your as they're nearly the same proportions. The camera is fantastic and the performance and fluidity are on par with iOS.
I have owned every Nexus device... went to the Pixel XL from the 6P....
Thinness is just good, i think theres such a thing as too thin. This phone i think its perfect balance.
As far as bezels.... Its not a big deal really. My fingers rest there when i play horizontally anyways. Its not as beautiful as minimal bezel phones nowadays, but by NO means its ugly. Its fine.
I don't mind the bezels personally either. It makes it easier to use one handed. If the screen went closer to the bottom of the screen, there'd be no way for me to reach the navbar with my thumb (it's tough now as is, but maybe my thumbs are longer than average lol).
Thickness I never pay any attention to, because my cases are all varying thicknesses anyhow.

I'm considering selling mine actually, for the sole reason of the speakers. I can't stand watching videos on it, after my last 2 phone booth had dual front facing.

I dont think the bezels are any bigger than the Iphone 7. I think the black version looks better as it does a good job of blending the bezels especially side bezels with the screen when the display is off. White version makes the bezels stand out more prominently. The new thinner, longer phones look super cool but as has been pointed out the XL is not ugly at all. 450 euros for 128GB its a fantastic price. I would suggest that you make sure it is under Google warranty as there can be some hardware fault down the road and Google will have your back covered.
Hi,
I have an iPhone 7 Plus and a Pixel XL and I can tell you that it's really hard to choose between them.
The iPhone 7 Plus is definitely thinner and you can clearly feel the difference. However the Pixel is not that thick especially from the bottom side (the top of the phone is thicker).
Concerning the bezels, its the opposite. The iPhone 7 Plus bezels are much bigger and noticeable compared to the Pixel XL.
So I actually prefer the thinness of the iPhone 7 Plus and the bezels of the Pixel XL and that's why I said it's hard to choose between them. Also, you need to know that the iPhone 7 build quality is much better than the Pixel's.

hello, doubts about the screen

Hello, I'm about to buy a gxl2. but I doubt the round edges. I'm used to square screens. Are those round edges rather than squares uncomfortable?
I wouldn't say "uncomfortable" but they are definitely exaggerated. They don't really bother me but if I got to choose, I'd want them slightly less round lol.
Definitely not a deal breaker for me though.
I was apprehensive about them at first, but over time you forget about them. Especially if the notification and navbars are dark, it's not a huge issue.
I absolutely love the round edges.

Until someone mentioned the rounded screen corners I hadn't even noticed them. Non-issue in my mind.

Same. I actually abhor the app developers that are still stuck supporting only the 16:9 aspect ratio forcing me to look at one set of rounded corners and one set of square ones when watching videos or playing games.
I actually kinda like the rounded edges myself.

General Initial impressions

Got my Sunny Yellow one delivered this morning so been playing with it most of the day. Initial impressions are very good, some are listed below. Feel free to list your own.
The fingerprint scanner was a little off but after an update came in i deleted my fingerprints and re-did them and its been fine ever since. Couple of times it hasnt worked but i think thats because the screen is so smooth/slippery that my thumb slipped on the screen as it was trying to read it.
I dont have a 5g plan or even 5g signal where i am to test but so far 4g speeds are exactly the same as my pixel 2xl and oppo reno 2 ive come from.
I dont really like having the "internet" tile, id prefer having them seperate the wifi and mobile data tab. Just seems strange to add a further click to enable/disable wifi when i want to instead of just hitting the tab.
On the home screen if you make a folder then the apps slightly overhang the edge of the circle which just looks odd to me, i wish they were all within the folder.
I wish there was an option of disabling the big clock on the lock screen. I have a picture of my partner on my lock screen and when picking up the phone id rather see her than her face covered by a huge clock
The phone got very hot when setting up and transferring apps/data from my old phone but has been fine since.
I love the screen and how smooth everything flows. I dont see any issue with brightness personally. Ill see how battery life performs over the coming days
Hollow screen sound is a bit strange
Nova launcher crashes which is a shame because I don't like the search bar forced at the bottom of the screen on the pixel launcher.
Camera is brilliant
Power button is in the wrong place and should be swapped with the volume buttons is.
Lack of screen protectors available to get delivered is frustrating but not Google's issue.
It's fast, smooth and had a great camera. The rest I am still get used to. Prefer it to my S21 ultra, maybe not loving it as much as my Mi 10 Pro.
The camera hump on the back really exposes the glass to potential damage. If I were designing the thing, I'd make the entire back stick out higher than the camera glass, and fill in the space with more battery.
The rounded edge screen is pretty terrible. There are optical distortions along the sides. The radius of the edge should be reduced to around 1 mm.
A little more width on the screen would be nice. This is 71.5mm. Nexus 6 was 74, which was a lot nicer. 80 would be a dream.
A little bit of border around the screen would also be nice so you have somewhere to actually hold the thing. Function should be paramount, not form, and especially not goofy/ugly form like these have. A bit of border above the screen would make space to get the camera out of the screen instead of the ugly hole. I also hate the rounded corners on the screen. Software rounded corners are ok, because you can disable them, there is no reason to force it with paint on the inside surface of the glass.

Love it so far, so fast and fluid. As mentioned above it gets real hot, and was still discharging while using old pixel charger.
Camera is amazing the details captured are stunning.
Phone is very slippery to hold and would be easy to drop with the top weight of the camera hump. Tried to buy a case for grip and protection, and was told that they can until tomorrow because that was the day the phone was supposed to be delivered, but because of our crap postal service they sent a day early so that people would or should get them by that date
Real time translation works very well, even with the new update still seems a little buggy
Screen for me is fine for brightness I have high brightness mode widget and it is much brighter than the 4xl
I could buy pixel charger which I might take back because it doesn't seem to charge an faster.
My wireless car charger for the pixel 4xl charges this phone at about the same speed as the old wall charger, need to see if it throttles for heat though..

I agree, but it also would be heavy
This is concerning "Nova launcher crashes which is a shame because I don't like the search bar forced at the bottom of the screen on the pixel launcher." Hopefully there will be an update to Nova soon.
All the negative feedback on the rounded edges are making me consider the Pixel 6 versus the Pro. I think the base RAM on the 6 is fine. Giving up the Zoom is tougher to consider.

There as a day when heavy meant PREMIUM and light meant junk.
My laptop (lenovo), not even old, actually had some weights added into it to make it feel more substantial.
And so what if its a little heavier as long as it isn't burdensome. You can easily carry around several pounds without it being burdensome.

If you were referring to the rounded CORNERS, there will be kind-of software solutions for the rounded corners. Right now you can run "wm size 1440x2890" to reduce the display area (persistently). This brings the display area past the camera hole and past the rounded corners. Now normally, there would be a system property available to adjust the corners, however this one has multi-radius corners which are set in a config for systemui, therefore will actually require a rebuild from source to fix, but once that is unset, it should have square corners.
However the side effect of course, will be a slightly smaller display area. Still wider than the non-Pro, but less than it is now. Not that you need all that height for any practical purpose.
And for that matter, you could use the same "wm size" command to reduce the display width to work around the rounded edges. "wm size 1300x3120" pulls the display area all the way into the flat part and eliminates the optical distortions. You could probably establish a better balance that lets it in just a little bit and probably gives the same width as the non-Pro.

Nova Launcher was crashing for me but it seemed to be a clock widget I had previously and it wasn't displaying it.
I deleted the widget and rebooted the phone and it has been perfect since and all day today.
My screen now looks like my 3XL only longer, faster, smoother
I can't find a was to Turn off Always on Display. Ist ist me, or isn't there an option?
Thanks for the tip on Nova, might rebuild my screen from scratch with it too ID the issue. The pixel launcher without some custom apps and grid sizes is a bit of a jarring experience. Search at the bottom is all wrong too.

Have you gotten the small 70 MB Android update yet? Mine was buggy with Nova Launcher Prime, in particular, but after the update, all good.
I like the fingerprint reader better than the ultrasonic in my Note 10+. It's working much better and faster for me so far. Here's hoping that stays true.
