keyboard typing - Huawei Mate 20 Questions & Answers

is it just me or i mistype alot .. also i cannot type very fast i feel the keyboard is a bit laggy
coming from a samsung note 5 phone
i tried multiple keyboards but all the same .. may be cheetah keyboard is the best in response but still not that perfect as it used to be on note 5 .. is it the touch ?! may be hiding the navigation keys and using fullscreen gestures ?!
i dont know .. so please if you feel like me just share your opinion here i would appreciate it

The keyboard prediction sucks. I installed Gboard and it's so much better.

I think it's you... I'm coming from a Galaxy S7 Edge and I have the same Swiftkey account logged into both devices. On the S7E I had the feeling that the predictions were mostly wrong and instead of proposing the closest word for the context it would just propose the misspelled word without correcting it. On the Mate 20 however first word and next word predictions are MUCH better and I have to correct my typing much less than on the S7E. I also think that the slightly wider phone helps with the typing in my case...

well in my case to evaluate a jeyboard correctly you should turn off autocorrection to see whether you type correctly ir not
well coming from samsung phones note 5 and note 8 and note 9 i never mistype a word but on this device i cannot wrire a whole line without correcting multiple words
i left the above without correcting it so you can spot tge writing spelling errors
also i never mistyped on iphones
but on chinese phones like xiaomi and huawei i mistype alot .. i tried almist all 3rd party keyboards .. i also tried to close all gestures whether fullscreen or knuckle ones but still lots of mistyping errors
i had the mobile for over a month now and still mistyping errors is not improved by a single bit
also i cannot turn on autocorrection because i use alot of non identified words

So you actually think it might be something about the calibration of the touchscreen and not the keyboard app itself? I still feel the slightly wider phone helps me type better and correct less (one hand typing) so overall I feel it's better than my old S7 Edge.

How would that be a step back ?
Some people feel that keyboards are unnecessary on a phone. Also this appears to be most of the general public because typically phones with keyboards don't sell as well as their keyboardless counterparts.
I'm not one of those people... I can type faster and more accurately without a keyboard than I can with any touch keyboard - I'd rather be able to type exactly what I want than to have to rely on auto-prediction or have to hunt around on-screen for the symbol I want to type. I also hate the amount of screen real-estate that the keyboard uses up.
The only thing I miss from my Touch Pro 2 to this phone is the physical keyboard. I was hoping I'd get over it after a while, but I still miss it every time the auto-predictor guesses the wrong word and I have to go back and re-type it. Which fortunately since I use SwiftKey X isn't that often, but if I had a physical keyboard it wouldn't happen at all.
Unfortunately I don't have an answer to your question though - I was hoping there would be one in this thread

I miss my tp2 (well actually i still have it i just cant let go but its not active on a plan anymore) i loved the keyboard on it and then i got the Epic 4g cause of the keyboard then i started typing more and more on the touchscreen so i could get used to it for when i upgraded to Epic Touch 4g but its just not the same. I hate the auto-predictor i have many custom keyboards and swype to type faster but thats only good on quick text messages or very short emails but i use my phone for work and typing with the on screen keyboard long emails or sms is just a pain in the butt also all the screen real estate it takes up whenever i log in to one of my pc's through my phone and start typing it takes up to much space . my wife has the epic 4g still and i always go back to using that one for long emails.
There was a thread floating around here a couple weeks back that looked as if it was from an official Sprint memorandom. It stated that there was a new Epic 2 in the works. People were speculating that it may be an update to the Epic4G , in fact I believe qbking77 even did a video on it let me see if I can find it..I looked and for the life of me came up blank? sorry. I found this though.

i hope they do make an EPIC 2 but with the latest specs available and with atleast the size of the Epic touch 4g same shape as the Epic touch no round corners like the Epic 4g has.

You could always buy a small bluetooth keyboard and pair it with your phone.
dont want to have to do that especially cause the battery life
IMO keyboards make phones much more bulky and not worth it, especially since I can type just as fast with one compared to if I use Swype or Swift Key.
I work there and I haven't heard anything about a keyboard model coming out, not one worth getting anyway lol...

HTC is done with keyboards

I've been laboring away with the amazing XDAndroid devs have put together while waiting for HTC to release a true successor to the TP2 (pro 7 doesn't count, sorry). That will, apparently, never happen.
htc abadons keyboards
Claude Zellweger, this company's creative director, said at a press event "As a company, the QWERTY keyboard we're moving away from in general. We feel that putting too much effort into that would take away from our devices."
Instead, HTC is going to work to improve the haptic feedback that is included with the on-screen keyboards it will use in future handsets.

No one ever made a better landscape slider, and perhaps now, no one ever will.
Say it ain't so!
I was still hoping for a TP2 replacement as well... Ugh. I guess w/o a kb, the phones are a lot cheaper to build, and there's a lot less crap to break.
Still sucks...
Maybe once their billion dollar exclusive is up Nokia will get rid of the trojan Elop MS planted behind their walls, they can support multiple OSs and innovate again. They used to have some really impressive form factors, including two tilting sliders.
Why HTC? Why?
One of the main things keeping me from upgrading is this amazing and very useful keyboard.
Anyway lets hope they change their minds.
even if something like swype or slideit isn't a satisfactory replacement for a hardware keyboard, imo they definitely improve the usability of a software keyboard. by no means am I against a hardware keyboard (i really like my tp2) but eliminating it from a phone does allow for a much more compact device.
Oh no...
I am really a fan of physical keyboard too, and it must be those with a separate row with number-keys, just like our TP2. Without keyboard I will be sure go for a phone with 4.7" screen. But still, it's just not the same good feeling on a keyboard.
but however thanks for posting this "news", at least I know from now I shall not wait from HTC. Maybe Nokia one day??
I actually use a flip phone now, my TP2 is more of a PDA. I'm considering never buying another serious smartphone and just having a dumbish phone and a tablet.
5 lines, offset with comfortable spacing and good feedback was what finally got me to converge. I didn't care about the tilt until I used it, now I don't want to be without that either. If I can't have it, well, maybe I'll deconverge. Better bang for the buck in tablets anyway.

[Q] How to train the handwriting recognition?

Hi,
Finally bit the bullet and got a Note 2 to replace my aging HD2
Back to the problem, how does one train the Samsung keyboard to recognize my handwriting?
Currently it's crap,
Coming from a PC tablet with Vista/win7 where after some training, it could read my handwriting better than me, I'm massively disappointing and confused.
Searching around, it seems like it's not possible, and people recommend just learning to write the Samsung way
I though we left that crap behind back in the Palm era.
I did try WritePad briefly as it seems even crappier than Samsung's one.
Is there anything else, a hack, mod, another 3rd party software?

Well I do hope they or a 3rd party dev will pick up the slack.
Having hadwriting recognition without possibility to train it is mind boggling.
It's like they're just using OCR algorithms which is stupid, and still, training would help even there.
I find the handwriting recognition great. I have very little trouble.

Too bad your handwriting is probably different from the OP. like him I actually hare to print rather than actually write when I'm using the handwriting input mode and it does slow me down a bit. I'll write a sentence and then realise that I need to go back again and change two or three things in the sentence because they have been detected incorrecty. Overall it's just plain faster to use Swype style input on the keyboard.

Crooked scrolling problem??????

Hi
My old Samsung galaxy tab s2 9.7 had terrible slanted/wavy/crooked scrolling when scrolling text heavy Web pages in any browser or twitter etc... But it only happened in portrait mode.... Personally I prefer to use portrait mode, so I was stuffed lol
Does this tablet have the same issue?
It's really easy to replicate, just browse a text heavy Web page whilst holding the S4 in portrait position, are the lines of text crooked? ,looks as though the left side of the screen is scrolling faster than the right, giving a crooked look to the lines of text when scrolling.... Like I say, the s2 9.7 definitely had this problem.... Bit scared to buy the S4 if its also present to.
Like I say only happens in portrait, never in landscape.
I'd be really grateful to anyone who has the s4 to check for this problem,I love the super amoled screens on these tabs, but because of this problem I had to bin my s2 9.7 and go with an ipad.
I skipped the s3 9.7 because it POSSIBLY had the same issue.
Would love to buy the new S4 but if the issue is still there I'm in trouble.
Thanks for any help, would be much appreciated.

Nice one mate, much appreciated..... You've saved me a lot of money and inconvenience.
Cheers.
I just tried while holding the Tab S4 in portrait mode and definitely noticed it.
I have never seen that before, however this is the first android tablet I've owned in 6 years. That is really jarring and I can see why it would be annoying

To be fair Reuben.... We SHOULDN'T have to ignore it,it should be FIXED.... BTW I had the old galaxy tab A 9.7...the predecessor to the Tab A 10.1 2016....and also had the tab A 10.1 2016... Neither of which had this problem... So I don't think it can be put down to just an android issue.

Cheers Haggman for the reply, it absolutely was doing my skull in on the s2 9.7....it was just SO NOTICEABLE.... Why? I'm not happy to see this straight after 5 minutes usage.

Totally understandable mate, honestly,it was giving me a migraine it was that noticeable on my old s2 9.7,that’s why I sold it and bought a iPad Pro 10.5...absolutely zero problem now when scrolling in portrait...do miss the super amoled screen though.

The iPad pro is a great device mind you. I used it for 10 months but apple customer service was beyond a joke for me and I sold it for the tab S4. The wavey scrolling does really annoy me at the moment. But fortunately I use it mainly in landscape. I'm still not a fan of IOS but ipads do work well. Glad to be back on an android mind

What do you have to do to see this effect? I cannot see anything like the horrific distortion implied by descriptions of this problem. Or any distortion. Maybe a little when scrolling so fast I can barely register much less read text, but nothing in normal scrolling.
Hold the Tab in Portrait Mode and open a website with a lot of text. Might work with a word document too, but never tested.
Then move the text up and down.
Seriously it's there, be happy if you can't see it

LoL most st*pid reply so far in this thread. You should read it before making such bold statement.
The issue is there, it's just that not every can see it. Like LED flickering. Some people see it while others can't.
Anyway I'm happy with my Huawei which does not have the issue at all.

It most definitely is there. I personally can't even understand how it's possible for someone not to notice the issue, but apparently some people notice it more than others.
Also, why are you spouting nonsense about us being Apple fanboys? Seriously, I was devastated by this issue just because I DON'T want an iPad. Sending the S4 back was the absolute last thing I wanted to do. It had other flaws, which I was more than willing to live with, but I am EXTREMELY picky when it comes to a display.
Anyway, if you want to discuss this like proper adults instead of flinging cheap insults at us, go and have a look at this webpage: https://www.testufo.com/scanskew
It tries to illustrate the issue at the hand of moving lines across your screen. (you can change the direction of the line movement in that tool. If the lines move from top to bottom, you should see them skew on the Tab S4 as they move up and down the screen. If you let them move sideways, they shouldn't be skewed)
I'll try my best to explain the issue: The theory here is that the screen is skewing content because of the refresh direction of the display. What we're seeing on the Tab S4 is that the display is mounted in the device in landscape orientation which means that, when holding the device in portrait mode, it's refreshing the screen sideways rather than top-to-bottom. This makes that the content we're looking at is refreshed at one side of the screen while it isn't yet at the other side, resulting in the content looking skewed while the display is refreshing.
This issue is not limited to the Tab S4. In fact, every display in existence shows this behaviour, albeit some to a lesser extent than others. If I use the above tool to test for scan skew, I can see that even my €1000 PC monitor exhibits scan skew, but in the landscape orientation because it refreshes from top to bottom, as opposed to the Tab S4.
I'm not sure why the issue was so apparent on the Tab S4's screen, but I'm going to assume it has to do with the OLED screen, as the problem is probably also present on other tablets like the Huawei M5 and iPad (see, an Apple fanboy wouldn't say that, would they?) but is not as noticeable.
-Shrug- I can't see it even with the scanskew tool. Guess my eyes aren't fast enough to pick up the refresh. Works for me, I'm loving my S4

Accessories Struggling to make the switch to my P6P due to lack of stylus.

Hi all!
I'm very new here although I used to frequent XDA many years ago when I was all about that root/custom ROM life on my older devices.
I've been using a Galaxy Note 9 for the last 3 years and it has served my very well, mainly due to the stylus. Whilst the addition of a stylus doesn't appeal to most (I think), it is an accessory that is something I use every day and kinda have to.
I have a condition (localised in my hands) called hyperhidrosis. To summarise what this is: my hands sweat like nobody's business, no matter the weather/climate. And it's not just clammy either. My hands quite literally pour, lol.
Anyway, if any of you have ever had a splash of water on your device screen, you will understand how frustrating it can be when trying to type or browse or anything. Now imagine that, all day every day.
So the stylus was my saviour.
But now I have this brand new, shiny device that doesn't have one and, having used this thing for less than a month, I have had enough and ended up going back to my Note 9 until I can figure out a solution.
Does anyone know if Google or any third party company have released or will be releasing such an accessory?
I see a lot of users complaining about the in-screen FPR and there's me like "bro...", haha.
Anyway, thanks for reading this post. There isn't a cure or permanent fix for my hands so I'm stuck with them forever.
I'm now wondering if I should sell this handset and get a Note 20 or something, idk.
You can use generic stylus like this: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B08LMWYWFM
It works on regular capacitive screens. It doesn't do cool things like the stylus Notes can do.

I think you already answered your own question.
Even if you are happy with 3rd party hardware and 3rd party software to go with it (highly unlikely given your story). you'll constantly be worried about keeping the stylus with the P6P and vice-versa.
Rumour has it that there won't be another Note, but that the next S22 series will have a model with Note features.
If you are dependent on a stylus then I would stick with a phone which has native support for one personally. Either an existing model Note or see if the S22 Ultra has an S pen as rumoured. Doesn't sound like the Pixel is the right phone for you unfortunately.
If you have a medical condition that makes a decent stylus with good functionality a life saver, you should either go for the last year Note model, or wait for the S22 Ultra that has (rumored) official stylus support/casing (prob January/February).
Google never cared for a stylus, so you will just have very basic functionality, that's not what you are looking for.
Pixel 6 is not for you.
I am in same boat as your are, A NOTE 9 user for 3 yrs, its getting hard to live without s pen. its not just stylus but give great amount of feature mostly use one is copy a simple text from anywhere, use it as camera remote and many other feature. and I am waiting for S22 Ultra as I am not that happy with P6P, no doubt P6P is great device.

Seems about as good as it gets!
There is no device on the market that compares to Samsung Note series
And I know exactly how you feel about the pen And I know when you think about switching the phone, you feel very hesitant. In short, it is a series of note. You can do things that no other phone can do like copying things that don't get copied
If you are thinking of switching you have to get used to not having a pen. Good luck
Thank you all for your input. Much appreciated!
Samsung and Apple have some particular copyrights which keep all other styluses from having some of the nicest features theirs do. It's unfortunate, and we'll miss having a stylus for the short period of time my wife and I had Note 10+'s, but it's worth it to me for how the l Android works on the Pixel versus Samsung, such as reliable notifications off my work emails and other things.
