Nexus 5X randomly lose connectivity - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there,
I am encountering a problem with my beloved N5X...
Since a few weeks it randomly loses connectivity (both cellular and Wi-Fi)
And after a few seconds (sometimes minutes) it catches the network back.
For example:
I wake up the phone for checking messages, and i see WhatsApp saying "searching for messages", no warning icons for network.
Then i try to load a Chrome page, it does not load..
After a few seconds all is getting back to normal and everything loads. (the web page, new messages notifications comes on, etc)
I tried so far:
- Reboot (after a reboot it works normally for a few hours, then problem begins again)
- Resetting network parameters (does nothing)
- Complete factory reset (had 2 weeks problem free then the problem begins again)
- Flashing custom ROM (from Google factory to last Lineage OS 15.1)
For informations:
- No VPN
- No gaming, the phone never heats up
- Good network coverage (both cellular and Wi-Fi)
- No network related apps
- The phone is 3 years old, never felt on the ground
Any ideas?
Thanks a lot for reply, and have a nice day!

I'm having a similar problem since Oreo update, but only on WiFi. On 4G network is working flawlessly but I think is due to carrier network settings on cellular towers.
Every search I made on the web to address the issue finished with a lot of posts read but no decent solution whatsoever, but the other day a reply on reddit made me think and I found a setting on my router WiFi AP section called "Unscheduled APSD (Automatic Power Save Delivery)" and since I disabled it my phone seems working better. I don't know if it's just random luck or it was really the cause of the issue but you can try.
Hope it helps.

Hello,
Thanks for your reply.
I searched everything on the phone that could be wrong and i also ended up that router might be the cause.
I did not found the setting you mention (i'm on Synology router) but i tried to disable the 5 GHz frequency band and use only the 2.4 GHz one.
Since then the phone works perfectly! Although the Wi-Fi speed is a bit slower..
I hope this can help you too!

I was on 2.4Ghz only since a few months but had the issue anyway before disabling uAPSD.
If your bandwidth is reduced is probably because your network is on a "busy" channel, try scanning all the wireless networks around your home (i use wifi analyzer on my phone) and see which are the "busy" channels and set yours on a free one. Bandwidth on 2.4 and 5 ghz should be the same, the pro of the first is a better (wider) coverage of the signal, mostly through walls and the pro of the second is less interference with other wireless technologies and environment at expenses of the coverage.

Well, after a few days i noticed the problem still persist even on 2.4GHz, but less than before..
Unfortunately Synology router does not have APSD option in the Wi-Fi settings.
I tried to put Protected Management Frames (PMF) on "enable - optional", that setting was disabled before.
Wait and see.
Thanks again!

Slow Wi-Fi after WW_2.20.40.97_20150917 update?

I did a search and didn't find anything. I've been updating my ZE551ML and keeping it completely stock. I am on the latest update (WW_2.20.40.97_20150917) and did a Factory Reset for a clean start. I realized after setting up my Wi-Fi again that speeds are extremely slow; <20 Mbps. This is on both the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands, and even if I put it in the Performance Battery mode.
Is anyone else seeing similar and if so, did it start with this update or something earlier?
Is it because of the location? For me, Wi-Fi working normally (at least didn't affect my daily use) except for in my room which is not very far from the router. I get 3 to 4 bars wifi, but it will stop working for sometime and speed is very slow I can't even watch a video without being interrupted. If I walk out of my room, speed is back normal. It's like my room is protected against wifi

It is definitely something up with my ZF2. I have plenty of other devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network that get appropriate speeds. I'm pretty sure it also got great Wi-Fi speeds when I first got it, but this is the first time I re-checked the speeds after all of the various software updates since release, plus a Factory Reset.
FYI, after some additional testing as well as downgrading the firmware, this seems to be some sort of weird interaction between my router/access point and the ZF2.
I'm currently using the T-Mobile CellSpot (basically a ASUS RT-AC68 with T-Mobile custom firmware) in Access Point mode, and what I've been able to determine is that the ZF2 seems to be speed-limited when connected to the "normal" SSIDs (I have separate ones for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz). I have configured guest SSIDs (which have Internet access but not local LAN access) and when connected to those the speeds are as expected.
Really doesn't make much sense to me since it is the same wireless radio on the router. But at least I can reproduce it definitely at this point.
Some time lag )

My ZE551 ML is also facing some issues after the final update WW_2.20.40.97_20150917. Cellular data is not working. All the buttons are working and on but arrows are not displayed and no data transfer and status says Cellular network status-Disconnected.
poor clarity in voice calls to the receiver and slow system respond with even phone book app.

Anyone else having WiFi randomly disconnect and reconnect?

I just got this phone yesterday and so far I just cannot get it to stay connected to my network. No other devices are having this problem. It basically just seems to constantly connect and disconnect from the wifi and also seems to constantly search for other connections as well. I've tried factory reset, cache clearing(which never works as it just red triangle error's me), reset the router, tried to change settings in phone itself but nothing seems to fix it and it's making it impossible to use at home. Anyone have any suggestions?
Same thing here. I went in and turned off all the wifi in battery power saving exclusions. Ain't been home long enough to try though.
I'm having this same issue! My prior daily (S9+) didn't have this issue, and my Pixel 2XL doesn't have this issue. I could be right next to the router and it still does this. Doesn't seem to matter if I'm at home, work, parents house, or a cafe, it still randomly loses connection. Same with my Gear S3. Just randomly loses connection. It's pretty annoying, and I hope they offer a software fix. Yes, I factory reset the phone and it still occurs.
I noticed this only with the 5 GHz band... I will contact LG about it today...
Yeah, I'm having the same issue. My router broadcasts both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz on the same SSID. Last I'd heard, Android wouldn't connect to 5 GHz in that circumstance, and my G7 appears to continue that trend.
But it still disconnects from the network all the time.
Sadly I have the same issue. I have different SSID for 2.4 and 5Ghz band, and as devil_tear says it's fails only with the 5ghz band. I did a factory reset but issue stills there.
Did you found a fix for this issue?
Had the same problem. Solved by enabling wifi on the battery saving power exclusions in the battery menu.

Thanks a lot for this tip.
Had the same problem, was burning through my 4G data at a rate much faster than on my Google Pixel.
So far, adding wifi to the power saving exclusion has seemed to fix the issue. Thank you!
PS: Does any else find the wifi signal on this phone is weak?

Great suggestion
Tried the suggestion here for adding WiFi to exclusion. WiFi on 5ghz still disconnects and reconnects every few seconds. Only way to keep it connected is putting it on 2.4ghz.
Tried the suggestion with reboots, factory reset, adding WiFi to exclusion and then connecting to the network. My g7 will just not work with it.

Have seen this also, in my case it happens when I am a bit far from the router, it may be the router not having a strong stable connection so the phone see it doesn't have internet. In the points I experience that I have a 5Ghz connection of 0-2Mb but I have maybe 2 bars of connection. Share your opinions to try to understand the problems.

For me I would say it happens more if I have 2-3 bars but nonetheless it happens even 3ft away from the router eventually. what's odd is my note 5 stays connected, my computer, and other phone stay connected on the 5ghz band. All these devices are in the same location so I'm pretty dumbfounded especially considering this is a newer phone than the note 5 lol. I hope it can be fixed with an ota update

I have the same issues. I sent back the first phone for a replacement thinking it was the issue. When the second phone arrived it was working perfectly and then it happened again.
I noticed this happened after I took whatever software update was offered. I went as far to switch providers with different equipment (fibe to cable) but same result.
Made specific 2.4ghz SSID for LG G7 and no issues.
I've never seen this happen. And my laptop and LG are using the same 5 ghz signal.
I think I remember the G6 doing this though

Just came back from my dad's house and I know it's a short test, however he has an Archer a7 connected after his dedicated provided box. I wonder if that can fix the issue?
I have the same issue.
it connects to 2.4Ghz networks fine but the range is very limited when I move to another room wifi reception decreases a lot. However my wife`s S9+ and my oneplus 6 works fine.
Main problem is when I connect to 5Ghz network it starts disconnecting and reception is even worse than 2.4Ghz. S9 and Oneplus connection is still fine at 5Ghz
I tried to change the 5ghz channels on the router but no luck and I exclude the WIFI from battery saving apps still didn`t work.
I have to use 2.4Ghz and the reception is not as good as other phones
Wifi seems stable for me, except wifi calling. That would crash at connection or even mid-call sometimes. I'd have to reboot to make or receive another call. Some sort of server error. Turned off wifi calling and no issues yet. Didn't notice Ed it anyway since 4g is really strong here.
After the newest update on my phone, taken today Oct 4th, 2018/my random WiFi disconnects haven't been happening at all on 5ghz. Also, the signal is about 3 bars larger now in the same location it used to be dropping out constantly. Hopefully it stays this way.

I was coming in to report something similar. I've got the US T-Mo version and just got the G710TM10K update yesterday.
WiFi stability has massively improved. Disconnects are almost completely nonexistent now. I haven't noticed that the signal bar is behaving any differently, but that doesn't mean a whole lot. The update was fairly large (over 400 MB), so I could see new firmware playing a role.
Could anyone still on G710TM10G post their data from Software Info to check if the baseband has been updated? Here's mine from 10K:

Networking problems: WiFi, IPv6

Hi,
since abut 3 or 4 weeks I've more and more problems with my Z2. I'm on stock 8.0.0, not branded, pure Moto. My home network is dual stack IPv4/IPv6. IPv6 uses auto configuration and router advertisements, no DHCPv6. My problems are:
WiFi disconnects periodically. I notice this when I'm reading. Then I see WiFi turning off and on again. The next Problem is related to this.
Some times (I thinks with every other [re]connect) the phone does not have a IPv6 address.
Nothing I've found (reset play, clear cache, etc.) helped. Any suggestion?
TIA
Unfortunately, the Z2 does have issues with wifi. Stock or AOSP the heart of the problem is om Moto's side. The only thing that helped (for some) is to disable wifi location scanning in the location settings, setting a static ip addy, and again (for some) use the 2.4ghz network if you have a dual band router. This is by no means a fix, it more like salt in the wound lol. It has helped some, so you might give it a try.
Thanks. In the mean while I've tried some thing I've read in an other thread on XDA. I've split 2,4 and 5 GHz in two different SSIDs. This seems to help. In that thread I've read that this is an issue with the WiFi chip set.
If the problem comes back I will try what you've suggested and report back ...

Wi-Fi drops for a split of a second

I have the 7T for about a week now and it's really a fantastic smart phone.
The only problem for me now is that the Wi-Fi seems to drop for a split of a second (which disconnect me from online games, such as COC) then it's OK again, the Wi-Fi icon on the status bar disappear for a second and then appear again.
The problem is really annoying and could happen for several times for a few minutes and has this happening both in my home and in my work, I guess this is not a router issue.
I turned off the battery optimizations features (adaptive battery and sleep standby optimization) and also some Wi-Fi features (such as intelligently select the best Wi-Fi and auto switch to mobile data)
My phone is updated with the latest Oxygen OS 10.0.6
Any idea?
No,
But I have the exact same issue, I’m hoping it’s a ROM issue that will be fixed as no other devices in my network have problems.
I have noticed this only when connected to 5 ghz channel. I'm using a TP link router with ACT broadband and wherever I have faced this issue apparently all the places have the same router.
My thread on the community : link
The screen recording of when it happens.
I have ubiquiti AP'S with 2.4 and 5ghz (connecting at 5ghz) and which are rock solid normally and certainly with all my other gear.
I'll take a look at your thread. Thanks.
Same issue for me too. Just got the 7t a couple days ago
Damn, I just ordered a 7T and I'm hoping it works well. I had a 6T, using here on T-Mobile in the States, and it would drop the LTE connection quite often. It would reconnect automatically in a second or two, but it was super annoying and I ended up sending it back. I know this thread is about Wi-Fi but it brought back memories. I'm hoping these phones don't have issues with the modem or something.
Dont wanna sound selfish, but im glad im not the only one with this problem. Still dont know what is the issue
More info
Seems that the problem occurred only when I'm not close to the router (although the signal seems to be OK) and the Wi-Fi switch from the 5 to the 2.4 ghz and then from 2.4 to 5 ghz continuously.
My home router uses the same SSID for the 5 and 2.4 ghz network, I tried to disable the 5 ghz just for testing, but I could not do this as my router is managed by my ISP.
After system update to 10.3.0.HD65AA problem seems to be solved, although WiFi is not mentioned in the update log.

Same issues with a Ubiquity mesh system. Thought it was the handoff between APs, but maybe not. I'm on stock 10.0.5 TMO. It's done it since I've owned it which was launch day. I don't game or anything so it's just been a slight annoyance. I can confirm this is the only device having the issue. My wife has a V30 which is fine and my two daughters have Samsung Galaxy 9s which are also fine.

I have the same problem as you, and I have updated 10.0.8, but the problem persists, but I found that only a few people have this problem, so I try to change the settings of my asus gt5300 router. turn off Smart Connect function and separate the SSID of each 2.4Gzh 5Gzh, because my router is with 2 5Gzh so I also separate it into 2 SSID
If your router only has 2.4G and 5G, just separate them.

WiFi Issue

S20 Unlocked from Samsung.com
Carrier: AT&T
Issue:
When on home WiFi network, the S20 does not load images in apps such as Facebook, Instagram, etc. Slows to a complete crawl.
If I test on fast.com, I receive normal home speeds on mobile of 200-400mbps
If I turn off WiFi, performance immediately returns to as expected.
Any ideas?
Router is Netgear XR500
Quality of Service is off.

Just tried that.
Fast.com reported download speed of 500mbps
I was able to download an app at an appropriate speed
It seems to be only Facebook and Instagram that are still showing the issue -- extremely slow load times.
Both work as expected on LTE.

Android System Web Viewer did take forever to update while we set the phone up. I'll see if I can roll that back.
I don't have any issues with any of my other android devices on my router - but I'll also check IPV6 settings.

No luck trying this.

Those two apps still wildly underperforming on wifi.

I guess that means it's a problem with the router settings. Not sure how.

Hope you sort it out sir, I normally don't get unlocked on ATT due to losing WiFi calling but I get a better signal now and you can just call to get visual voicemail fixed if yours doesn't work right away so I'm loving it....

Was a fix found?
My 20+ is having problems with wifi slowing to a crawl after just a few minutes.
Just bought a new router TP-Link AX11000 and it started so I thought it was the router but everything else on wifi in the house gets expected speeds my two 20+'s not so. I think it has to do with WIFI 6. If I stay within 10ft of the router everything is fine after that... I go in my bedroom 30ft away and have -63dbm signal strength and I can run a speed test and get 500mbps down try again and it will start at 500 and slow to around 45 try a 3rd time and and I barely get 4mbps 4th time and it's 0 with signal strength still at -63 on all of the test in the bedroom my upload will be 45mbps.
after a lot of testing with battery settings and things on the phone found out that my slow wifi was due to 2 settings on the router.
first in your router disable WMM, this made my s20+ use like 30mbps max in my case. now list my wifi 5ghz as +800mbps
seconds, disable ipv6 on the router. this made my phone ultra slow to everything. like play store hang on app updates, google drive take forever to load every single photo, like is taking forever to get the first reply from the server.
with that changed now the phone works at full speed on wifi. play store updates are shocking fast.
so lame that a flagship that cost nearly 1 thousand dollars have to disable things externally to work properly. no other phone or device works bad with the previous config of WMM or IPv6. I have a Linksys WRT1900ACS.
Hope they fix it with a software upgrade.
