Problems with type c to type c transferring of data from Nexus 6P to Pixel 3 XL - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

Hi,
I tried to transfer data from my Nexus 6P to the Pixel 3XL using the Type C - Type C cord included in the box but the 2 phones would not recognized each other. When i go into the settings, it says UBS is not connected. The only thing that worked was when I used a Type A/C cord with the adapter. Do you think this is a hardware issue? This is my third P 3XL, the first 2 did not have problems transferring data using Type C/C. Since im still within the 15 days, i want to make sure its not a sign of a bigger problem. I know i can RMA if it turns out to be some other problem but i dont want a refurbished phone if i have had this phone for less than a month. Has anyone come across this issue and what do you think the problem is. I chatted with google but they were no help. Thanks!

This is such a niche experience I am doubtful you will find a significant number of people who have even attempted the task let alone had issues with it.

Really? So people don't transfer data from an old phone onto a new phone using a type c to type c?

What he is saying is that data transfer app will only ever appear when you reset the phone. Since it's a one-time use (usually) you won't get feedback on your highly specific issue. Use the phone and enable USB debugging. Transfer files back and forth between your PC/Laptop, use USB-OTG. Install and use adb/fastboot. I understand your sensitivity, but If all this works the phone should be a keeper. What did you return the first two phones for? Why didn't you set the new Pixel up with the old Pixel(s)... why go back to the N6P? Surely you had set both of them up the way you wanted before the replacement came, right?

Ok. Thanks. That makes sense now. I seem to always be the lucky one and get lemons, thats why I'l ultra careful. I returned the last 2 phones because both of them had screen sensitivity issues. On the first one, i couldn't scroll from the bottom of the right hand side of the screen. The 2nd one, i had issues with the bottom left hand side. I didnt realize the problem until i tried to change from letters to numbers while texting. Everytime i would have to tap multiple times in order to make the change and then found out that i wasn't able to scroll from the bottom inch of the phone.
Thanks for your tips, i will definitely try it out! Have a good one.

Is there any way to disable MTP, only charge?

As title.
How can I disable MTP and only charge the phone when connecting it to the USB?
I would like to have this option as well, but I do not believe it is possible.
Curious - what is your reasoning for wanting charge only?
EDIT: The way the "Connect As" UI is set up really bugs me. One would think that since they utilized check boxes on this menu that you would have the option of selecting or de-selecting both options. Oddly enough their check boxes function as radio buttons and you are required to select one or the other...
Enter via adb shell or a term emulator with su privilage:
Code:
setprop persist.sys.usb.config adb
This is temporary and will revert after a reboot. To make permanent you can script this into init.d or edit your default.prop

is there any non-root way? i am currently sitting in the library and the girl in front of me lets me charge my nexus on her laptop, but the thought of her beeing able to see all of my photos is kinda discomforting ...
Or you can use Tasker with Secure Settings.
Root! And use a fast charge enabled kernel.
This will also cause your phone to think it's plugged into an AC rather than USB...and thus draw more power.

Exactly. Easiest option.
so that's the reason it takes so long ... but she's gone now and i've found an ac plug. my nexus is just a week old and i don't have had any crashes etc. yet so i won't root in the near future. i rooted my sgs after 6 months and used cm7/9 for another 6 months. this slowly destroyed my internal sd to a point where i only got 70 € for my sgs on ebay ... i think i've learned my lession.

I don't know how you managed that, I flashed my nexus s literally thousands of times, never had a problem.
I honestly don't know how you destroyed the sdcard by flashing a rom.
that problem (which occures more often with the captive) affects some people http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1447303 there is no permanent solution.
Encryption eh!?!
Seen a couple of threads recently with problems relating to encryption.
Is encryption necessary?
Do you people work for the CIA or MI6 or something?
Are you all guarding information important to national security??
just read the thread, everything is explained there. nobody uses encryption, android "thinks" the internal sd card is encrypted because it cant't mount it.

You will not experience that on Nexus devices as they have unlockable bootloaders which, when unlocked, allow you to use the "fastboot erase" command, which allows you to wipe completely most partitions.

How to trasfer files from Note 7/S7 edge to Pixel XL

Does anyone know how to transfer files (music/contacts etc) that are on the Note 7/S7 edge sd card to Pixel XL??
I don't know for sure but I think with the help of "Phone Transfer Software". Download and install this software on your PC and you can easily transfer files from Note 7/S7 edge to Pixel XL. It's worth a try
Put the SD card into your laptop/desktop or card reader > Connect Pixel XL to laptop/desktop via the supplied USB-C to USB-A cable > Drag or copy and paste music to whichever directory on the Pixel XL you want.
The contacts will sync from your Google account assuming that is where you store them. Failing that there is a step in the setup process to connect your old phone to the Pixel XL that will copy contacts and messages etc but I don't believe it copies music.

They have a cable in the box for this. Just plug it into the Note 7 and follow the on-screen instructions during initial setup. It was done in less than 15 minutes

Might be faster to just factory reset it and do it over lol
OP I did the same and am stuck right where you are. I didn't even have my note 7 with me when I picked this up and the store guy was so bent on getting the test call made I by passed that as well. I'm already right where I need to be minus my call logs and texts. Got my Apps, updates, finger prints, etc etc.. I dread resetting and starting over. If I find anything I'll post it back here.
use SMS backup and restore from the play store.

I'm sure this would be easy enough for texts but I can't believe there is no way to get back to that point at start up were you can copy texts and call logs without a hard reset.

Quick Transfer Adapter

Are folks using the adapter to migrate? Phone hopefully arriving today and I've always setup from scratch to prevent moving over too much bloat. Curious how people are handling...
Used it with my Nexus 6P and it worked like a charm for me.
Everything checked was backed up as expected and it helped me saving time by not looking every music album, background picture or whatnot I've stored before.
Used to copy from my Nexus 6, worked fine for the most part. A few things didn't transfer, but it was no big deal as I was ready to setup everything again anyway.

make sure you copy your call logs, text etc because once you exit the setup wizard you can't get back in. I skipped copying data in the store to make a "test call" and i was advised by a google pixel rep that once you skip the set up you can't get back in. SMS backup/restore app has a wifi direct transfer option that handled the texts and call logs for me. Just a heads up here as when I tried to use the adapter without setup wizard running it doesn't do anything "on it's own" the way it does in setup wizard. FYI
Even if you factory reset, still no option to try again?
I used it coming from a Droid Turbo 2 and it worked perfectly.

you plug in the adapter in the pixel and use a normal usb cable to plug into your old phone and the adapter hopefully that made sense
I used the adapter and it said no apps found! Settings appear to have transferred fine.
I tried using TB to ensure they were all attached to the market and it still couldn't find a single app.
Anybody else run into this problem? It's it because I'm rooted?
Never figured out why no apps were found when using the cable transfer and adaptor but I called Google support and they were able to restore my apps wirelessly.
I had to factory reset the phone to get back to the first time setup screen. When you get to the part where it asks you to connect to your old phone with the adaptor there is a link on the bottom to transfer data by other methods. It was a minor pain to go through the initial setup again but it worked so I'm happy.
Just wanted to post the solution that worked for me in case others run into the same situation.
I tried it out from my N6 to PXL. Once I realized that it chose the wrong gmail account as the default I factory reset and did it via email account over the air. After all 130 apps were restored, I repeated that whole setup again because I forgot to unlock my bootloader first -_-
Google Pixel XL Stop Motion Unboxing Video
In case you are still wondering, YES, if you hard reset the wizard will start again(according to a google rep on the Pixel forum). If you "skip" the setup when you 1st turn on the phone there is no getting back into the setup wizard without a hard reset. So if you buy at verizon and they want to skip the setup to hurry up and make a test call to see if you're activated tell them no. You need to setup or you won't be able to without a hard reset.

i need help pulling pics from my sons moto z with busted screen

OK here it is...... I'll lay it all out there. My son and his mom used my sons phone ,that i had just bought him , to video her new husband, my sons new step father, after he had to many to drink. needless to say he got a little violent and physical with my sons mom. the cops were called and a report was made. but during all this the step father noticed that he was being recorded and grabbed the phone and slammed it on the ground. it still boots up, fingerprint sensor still unlocks the device via my sons print. i can get it into bootloader mode. tested with "fastboot devices" but no how no way have i been able to get into it via "adb"
my PC does not recognize it plugged in at all unless i boot into fastboot mode. like i said the screen is completely black, does not light up at all. only way i know the fingerprint sensor works is when i touch it it vibrates twice and when my son touches it...it only vibrates once, meaning its unlocked. so heres my dilima i need the video from the incident to have all the evidence i need to insure that my son doesnt have to go back into that situation. any help would be greatly appreciated
by the way im no new comer to android. ive built CM roms in the past but this puzzles me......
thanks for any advice you guys can offer

Just an idea:
NFC pairing bluetooth mouse, HDMI wire, then use the mouse to copy files onto cloud/microSD
Not sure the mouse pairs fine on Android
For the step dad, better solution, the cheaper way to make a problem go away permanently

Thats the funniest thing ive seen in a while. brightened the mood significantly thank you
@Yash24 I tried both of those. This has got to be the strangest situation I've encountered on an Android. Not one single data recovery software will recognize that the phone is plugged up to the PC. Except in fastboot mode. My PC device manager sees it in fastboot. But when I reboot it I get nothing. I've installed Motorola's device manager to insure the correct drivers were installed and still nothing. The Moto z play doesn't support usb-c to hdmi. I bought a $45 HDMI, usb-c, and USB otg cable. To be able to plug it up to a monitor with a mouse plugged up to it as well. I can get the mouse to work but no monitor. What's even more mind boggling is that we've used ANDROID AUTO through his phone in my truck several times. So I thought...ok I'll plug it up to the truck and use Google voice to turn on WiFi so that his Google photos will back up... And now the truck doesn't recognize that his phone is plugged in. This is the craziest thing I've ever seen. I've tried using the mouse to maybe luckily click the wifi on but after an hour or so of attempts I gave up. I can't catch a break with this phone. I've unbricked my LG flex 15-20 times before. Without an unlocked bootloader and no custom recovery, back when we were trying to figure a work around for it. And I didn't have this much issue with it.
It's ridiculous that Android software now comes default " USB in charge mode" for this exact reason. If it defaulted to "media transfer" this wouldn't be an issue. What dumbasses writing the OS's these days. Geeezzzz
Look for a topic, control Android phone with a broken screen. Helped me once a lot when digitizer got broken on my old phone.

Just a quick thought, did the son have his photos/videos set to automatically upload to Google Photos? If so, maybe they're already on the cloud.

He stated that he was trying to turn on wifi for that reason, by default it only backs up over wifi. Is the bootloader still locked on it? If not you can use adb from TWRP but if not I'm not sure there's anything you can do other than trying to find a replacement screen.

Have you tried signing into your son's Google account on a PC??, maybe they are in Google Photos and would be accessible on a PC if they are.

Pixel 2 XL usb-c problem (Only charging works)

Hello everyone!
I'd like to ask you for a little advice here. My Pixel's usb port stopped working. To be more precise, only charging works. So data transfer, adb, fastboot does not work anymore.
I've already read tons of threads on the Internet related to this issue. For some it was only dirty charging port, for some it was needed to change some settings related to usb connection etc. I've tried everything I could find. Firstly I properly cleaned the port + used also contact cleaner and expected it to start working afterwards. That was not the case so I tried to play with the usb settings, reflash custom roms, etc... No success, still only charges. RMA is not possible anymore.
The very strange thing is, that fastboot commands in bootloader mode also stopped working. If this was a software thing I suppose at least fastboot commands in bootloader mode would still work... {I dont have any problems with fastboot installation and drivers on laptop side. Other phones work...}
I've already went for oneplus 7t and the pixel lies in a drawer.
I want to ask, if anyone was able to solve this problem somehow already. I'm asking this, because I think it is a hardware problem and want to try to replace the port:
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Google+Pixel+2+XL+Charging+Assembly+Replacement/108463
But I'm not sure, if the problem is in there or it can be motherboard or even something else...
I someone of you have the experience that replacing of the port helped, I would be glad to read about it.
Thank you!
Brano
The port wears out after while from using type c earbuds and sitting on the cord while it's plugged in.
Same thing happened to me. Unless you replace it yourself it's cheaper to buy a used 2xl than fixing the port. At least where I live.

Did this end up working? I originally thought it was my USB C port failing but I found a ton of people online with issues with pixel 2xl and Android 10. I tested by looking at my USB options and everything is greyed out and the default is no data transfer now. Seems like a bug that Google doesn't seem interested in fixing.
They seem to be making g it harder and harder for me to stay on team pixel.

Not yet, still waiting for order to be delivered - basically, the usb c port already arrived, just waiting for battery. I will report back, once I'm done.
Regarding the grayed out options - the same here. It can be also result of defective usb c port. If it was a software in my case, then I would expect at least fastboot to work... But it doesnt.. I'm curious what will happen once I replace it.

Hello everyone,
So, I'm done with the replacement and EVERYTHING WORKS since then. In the picture, there is the old charging assembly.
I have faced this issue whenever Android version updated. 8 to 9 and then 9 to 10, and both times I has to mail it on for service. Second time around though, I was able to chat with the technician and he informed that the issue is because of faulty drivers. SMH. And all they did was reflash the device to OEM state and sent it back.
