Downgrade with S-ON & Locked Bootloader - HTC U12+ Guides, News, & Discussion

For some reason the Exodus1 and U12+ you can still fastboot boot TWRP while being locked bootloader with that said if you fastboot boot twrp while being locked you can perform the the adb commands here,
be advised that it is not recommended to perform any other actions while in TWRP while the device has the bootloader locked like attemting to flash magisk, it just won't work and could possibly brick your device.
There is a possibility to flash old RUU with with S-ON. It is necessary to delete current ROM number in misc (example on my HTC_EXO):
Boot into TWRP recovery.
Check position of ROM version number in misc by command:
C:\ADB>adb shell "dd if=/dev/block/platform/soc/1d84000.ufshc/by-name/misc bs=1 skip=2208 count=16"
1.43.617.3 16+0 records in
16+0 records out
16 bytes (16B) copied, 0.007033 seconds, 2.2KB/s
Delete ROM version number (1.13.401.1) :
c:\adb>adb shell "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/soc/1d84000.ufshc/by-name/misc bs=1 seek=2208 count=16"
16+0 records in
16+0 records out
16 bytes (16B) copied, 0.007466 seconds, 2.1KB/s
Boot into download mode (you can see empty line "OS- ") and flash previous RUU by PC or SD card flashing method, I prefer last one.
It works, I checked it on my Exodus1
For now we have only Temp S-OFF, this can be helpful to flash RUU for removing troubles and fixing phone when there isn't a current running RUU.
But never do it if you do not have a clear vision how to do it. For inexperienced users it is a way to get a brick, I will not accept any liability!
original Idea by @ziand can be found here for HTC U11 all credit goes to him I have only changed the command to work on HTC U12+ and Exodus1

Thank you for your mention. Yes, it also works on full 100% stock of U12+ with locked bootloader. It is possible on U12+ and Exodus1 because they can boot to their Temp TWRPs. Not important.. just after first command of checking position will be showed software number after factory or after last flashing RUU or factory reset.
Necessary to remember that some dd editing commands do not work with 3.2.3-5 TWRP and 3.2.3-4 TWRP. My mentions about it are here and here ... for now instead of them you need to use the last official TWRP or unofficial one according to your firmware number. Some useful comments from @Captain_Throwback are in U11 theme here, huge thanks.

Has anyone tried this on imagine ruu? Would it work on 2.45.617.1 dugl htc__621 ? Or is it unlocking the bootloader & sunshine?

Hi @JEANRIVERA
Does this apply to all variants ?

I can't vouch for all models but I suppose it should work

very confusing, we don't need to flash TWRP to check position of ROM version number, right ?
Just use adb shell .........

@JEANRIVERA
Can you reply my above question ?

I do not understand your question, the instructions are very simple and easy to follow, if you do as it is in the original post you should have no problems performing the downgrade

i will ask you ONE question at a time
do i have to do it in TWRP ?
can i just do it in adb mode ?

It was a an HTC bug on their bootloader and they probably fix in the last updates, the method in this thread only applies to those devices that haven't been updated to Pie or any other update that fix the bug on the bootloader that let's you fastboot boot TWRP while still being locked, I'm sorry

my converted Exodus 1 is still on Oreo
So, that's too bad

In this case, can i flash back to U12+ Hong Kong ROM, then try use this method ?

I really have no idea what is what you want to do. Please explain and specify if your device is a U12+ converted to exodus or an exodus converted to U12+ and what region is your device and your CID MID

post the fastboot getvar all of both phones please without imei and serial number please.
Do not use toolkits, more trouble than their worth.
to root, flash TWRP 2.8.6.0 recovery, get it from here: http://dl.twrp.me/m8/
then flash superSU 2.46.zip from here: http://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/
when phone reboots to android, complete root setup by opening SuperSU app and update the binary if required.

GPe custom roms require a custom recovery, if you want to do a full convert to GPe, you will need s-off.

do a fastboot getvar all, it will tell you what your current model ID and cid is.
to change cid the command is fastboot oem writecid (whatever you need it to be, alway 8 characters long and capitals) requiresd cid is in the GPe conversion thread
to change mid follow this guide, required mid is in the GPe conversion thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708581
then just follow the GPe conversion thread I linked earlier

Trying to root device using AIO toolkit by Hasoon. SuperSU not getting pushed to SD.

Hi,
I'm trying to use hasoon2000's AIO toolkit in order to root my HTC One M8 (T-Mobile). I am following the guide outlined in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2066390
I've flashed the recovery, all that I need to do now is click "Perm Root" to push supersu.zip onto my phone, and then use the recovery to install the zip. However, when I click perm root, i get the following message:
failed to copy 'su/supersu.zip' to '/sdcard/supersu.zip' permission denied

After I go to the recovery, I see supersu.zip there, and I flash it using the recovery, but I don't think it is a full and proper installation because when I enter supersu from my phone, it is telling me that "binaries" are not installed. I am assuming this is because of the denied permissions. USB debugging is definitely on. Any advice?

Does it also tell you to click a button to update the binaries? Do that.
Also, why are you using a toolkit? Rooting the M8 is super easy.
I always suggest to never use toolkits unless there is no other option to gain root. Usually for cheap third world devices like Micromax.
EDIT:
Here:
Go to this link, and download the "UPDATE SuperSU.zip" onto your phone.
Flash it in recovery.
Find it in your app drawer and open it.
Update the binaries.
You are now rooted.

If you are running Lollipop, the SuperSU version that comes with the toolkit is quite obsolete, and won't work anyway.
Just download the current (2.46) version SuperSU and flash it like xunholyx says.

What happens if you type the command: fastboot devices
The response should be the phone ID; which corresponds to your serial number, I believe, so do NOT post it.

Why are you trying to flash in recovery mode? You need to be in fastboot mode to flash via fastboot.
Have you got the proper fast boot drivers?

One M8 stuck on black screen with HTC logo and a triangle in each corner

I can't post what it looks like as I'm new here, but when I can I will.
I can't do anything from here. The problem arose a few weeks when I was trying to covert from GPE back to stock, after doing a factory reset in the bootloader I got stuck like this, and I haven't been able to fix it since.
I can't use adb as USB debugging isn't enabled since there is literally no android on my phone.
Fastboot works, but I can't reboot into bootloader or fastboot or whatever it is via fastboot reboot-bootloader, as when I try it just turns the screen off and takes me back to here. I also can't get to the bootloader or fastboot via power and volume buttons.
I also can't flash anything, and can't reboot into TWRP recovery, which I somehow managed to install but I forgot how.
The bootloader is relocked, but it is still s-off and rooted if that helps.
Really not sure what to do, I need my phone back, any help would be appreciated.
Also, when I flash an RUU, it does everything and then comes up saying
FAIL51 partition update fail
FAILED (remote: 51 partition update fail)
Okay, I'm not sure if this will work but please try to just boot twrp or stock recovery with the following command:
Code:
fastboot boot image.img
It seems like it does this because your bootloader is relocked
I've managed to fix everything.. Almost.
Now I can get into TWRP, and use adb push to get cm12 onto my device, but when i hit install on TWRP it just says unable to mount /data, /system and storage.
It's the latest version of TWRP and I don't know what to do. Maybe my phone isn't rooted anymore? How can I root it with no OS?

I think you don't exactly know what root is. Root access is a type of access the running OS has to alter the system partition.
You do not root a phone, you root the running software ! An unlocked bootloader, custom recovery has nothing to do with root access.
You do not need to root it, you need to flash or restore an OS, whether it's rooted or not.

YOu can't flash anything with a relocked bootloader. That is what a relocked or locked bootloader means. You need to unlock it again to flash anything.
Thanks for the help guys, I got it myself in the end. I flashed CWM instead of TWRP and used adb sideload to flash CM12 and Gapps and everythings working fine.

HTC one M8 official Android 6,0- Sense 7 root and twrp?

If asking for a why on s-off, then you likely don't want s-off. I wouldn't recommend you going with s-off until you've really gotten familiar with tweaking your device to the deepest level possible with s-on. S-OFF is useful for phone conversion (Taking a Sense or Sprint phone and converting it to a GPE), custom radios, and software / hardware hacks. You generally do not need this to get a fully customized experience. It isn't needed for modded ROMs or Kernels, or updating supported firmware.
Installing TWRP safely is pretty easy. You can either do it via fastboot (Fastboot flash recovery [twrp_image_file_name].img
Or, more simply; install TWRP Manager from the play store after unlocking your bootloader.

Wow that easy... Did not know that (flashed two s3 mini's before and it wasnt that easy compared to this)

For the Harman mods, you would probably be better off just using a ROM that has it pre-hacked
The chances of you hard bricking an s-on device is essentially NIL, so long as you make sure you read directions as you go. Make sure your firmware is up to date (Don't flash a MM rom on a LP firmware, though I've been told this is usually fine too), etc. You'll come to find that the M8 is one of the most rewarding and simple devices to strip down, root, and mod
Soft bricking... meh. I soft-bricked my device a handful of times so far, mostly due to my own error. Probably the easiest device to fix in event of this, though!

The phone is s-on by default. S-off is the "modified" or non-stock state.
S-off costs $25 US by sunshine app. Its not needed to install a custom ROM or root, if that is your main reason for asking about it.

You can't brick this phone by flashing a ROM, rooting, etc.
In fact, its nearly impossible to brick s-on; and unless you start messing with s-off mods.
Just make a TWRP backup before flashing a ROM, or rooting. That way, if anything goes wrong and you find yourself unable to boot (I'm not a fan of the term "soft brick) just boot to recovery and restore your TWRP backup.

Wow thanks for helping mate!
Could you redirect me to a rom that has it pre-installed? I would like to keep sense 7 as I like it alot and i use blinkfeed on a daily basis.

Plenty of folks here use the TWRP Manager app, previously linked by another user. I'd say its safe.
But I always just do the fastboot install method. If you have a fastboot environment working (and if you unlocked the bootloader by HTCDev.com, you should already), its easy to install TWRP by fastboot. Its also good to know how to do so (and other fastboot commands), if you ever run into the case the phone unable to boot into OS (for which any apps would obviously be useless).
Instructions on the TWRP website under "Fastboot install method): https://twrp.me/devices/htconem8gsm.html

I think I'll try the app as it does it for me, its just easier and I am more likely to make mistakes as a human.
I would like to thank all for the help!
I will come back to say if it worked and/or if i have any more questions
Edit: Ehhh does the app require root or not, you cant root without twrp so strange?

I'm actually not sure.. Actually I think most of these flashing apps require root
Either way, following redpoint's advice and learning how to do it through fastboot will do you a ton of good-- if you ever get into a reboot loop or some other similar kind of crash, you'll definitely need to be familiar with adb and fastboot. Don't be afraid to settle in with a guide and go for it, the M8 is one of the safest devices to experiment with while s-on

You can back it up through ADB, so that you don't lose app progress The command sequence is as follows: (Thank you @xunholyx )
adb backup -apk -shared -all -f C:\Users\NAME\backup.ab to backup (replace "NAME" with your windows user name)
adb restore C:\Users\NAME\backup.ab to restore (replacing "NAME" again, of course)
This should allow you to back up your apps in their current state without root. I'd encourage using another backup service of some kind in order to save your contact info and the sort.. HTC Sync works if you want to keep it simple

I guess you would do that as first? Not while or after unlocking the bootloader?
And if i want to restore it, i guess i need to boot into fastboot and then run the command

Excuse my delay
Run the backup command while the phone is online and in android-- I do not believe it works during fastboot (I'm not at a computer, and am a wee rusty on this part)
Of course, make sure you do it before you unlock that bootloader

I'll take a look, i am still deciding if i want to do this or not because its still under warranty and sometimes the top speaker acts a beet shady (cleaning it out with compressed air and a toothbrush and tapping it on the table helps to restore audio)
So maybe i'll wait, thanks for the help anyways

I agree that this post is off-topic from the original subject of the thread, and should be in another thread (either new thread, or there are others that discuss system write permissions).

Hey all
Ran into a bit of a problem. I followed another sites instructions on rooting the HTC10 which basically said : Unlock Bootloader > Flash TWRP > Install SuperSU > Reboot phone.
What it didn't include was backing up the System Image.
Now, the phone will not recognize my SIM card at all.
Does anyone have a system image backup I can use to get the SIM working again ?

I've already checked that thread (actually, was the first place I checked)
Couldn't see a CID for VODAP021
Is there another Backup image I can use that would be compatible ?

That was a oversight on my behalf. Besides, never needed to do anything like that on the M8, so it didn't really cross my mind at the time.
Anyway, its been done. Any way to recovery it now ?
Maybe with a stock ROM ?

Thanks for this guide and your teams' fast support of the 10. It's really appreciated. I got S-Off without issue.
One note about the guide, reboot to recovery does not currently work. It will only reboot to download, bootloader or system and attempting to reboot to recovery will reboot to system instead. @Captain_Throwback indicated this is a known issue with the current build of TWRP.

Jut an FYI on VZW 10, you need to check oem unlock in developer options to unlock bootloader BUT it's not there. I assume Verizon hid it.
@jcase many thanks for this man! Now I have an idea of what to do next week.
Will donate in the form of buying sunshine again for sure. :good:

Have you tried re-locking the bootloader and using HTC's RUU for your device? Screwed up my previous phones and restored them using RUU. It will delete ALL data including TWRP though
Anyone got help with command promts etc, step by step for terminal with a Mac? With regards to HTC Dev part?
Clearly i'm not that super on it, but follow guides pretty well and have been able to do the HTC M7 but forgotten all the terminal parts..

Enabling this would not enable unlocking the bootloader, even if you could reach it in the UI.
Verizon users need to just wait a bit for a pure SunShine solution

It's been tested out...by me...and external SD will not mount in twrp. So you won't be able to make a backup. Uhl works perfectly. Captain throwback even said in the thread that he didn't need to make the wl version. He thought the uhl version wouldn't even boot...but I confirmed that it would.
