How to root and Flash custom recovery and rom - Xiaomi Redmi 5A Questions & Answers

Hello all,
This is my first redmi device. I am not quite aware of unlocking bootloader and flashing roms on this device.
I googled it and it seemed confusing.
My primary phone is Oneplus and its all quite simple there.
Can anyone guide me on how to do it with this phone.

Can anyone help me?

[Q] Installing a custom rom question

Hey guys,
I've never installed a custom rom and I was thinking of getting Cyanogen so I rooted my phone and got 6.xxxxx (forgot the number but the most recent one) CWM recovery but the recovery didn't work and it said "Long time no see". I did some research and I figured out that I need to unbrick my phone in able for CWM to function properly. Can someone just confirm and perhaps briefly explain why i need to do this. It seems hard and dangerous and if I could I would prefer to avoid doing it to get a custom rom. If I do need to do it, is the stickied unbricking guide up to date and working?
On another note, I have unlocked my phone (using Rogers on a Bell phone). Will installing a custom rom do anything to stop that from working?
Thanks!

Yes you are correct you need to use the unbricking guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2044645
The reason for this is LG locked the boot loader for ICS as a result it can only be installed through gingerbread. If you have Windows 7 and not xp you could get errors during the kdz install portion. If that's the case use this to install the kdz file: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2149211
Then return to hereric's guide to complete the process. Good luck.
In regards to your 2nd question it shouldn't. But to be on the safe side it can only be unlocked from a stock ROM so I would install one of the many cwm installable cwm based on v20(x) first. ie. V20c, d, e or f. Then go to any ROM.
Sent from my LG-P930 using xda app-developers app
Thanks
Thanks Ok i guess I understand it now, so this whole unbricking is just downgrading your OS.
And I have windows 8 that wasn't an option Anyway i'm in the process of unbricking atm following your instructions i'm currently installing the kdz. I'll let you know how it goes but thanks a lot for the help, I really appreciate it.

Unlocking the bootloader correctly involves running both commands, one after the other. So many people have had issues related to only performing one or the other. Do both! There is a very good sticky guide by Nathan Chance, with step by step instructions on how to properly unlock and more. First, you need to make sure you are using the absolute latest fastboot and adb binaries HERE. After unlocking, follow the instructions carefully on getting TWRP installed. It is a two-part process. You need to download two binaries. From the PC you fastboot boot the image file, and then from the phone you use TWRP to install the TWRP zip file. Once you are unlocked and have a custom recovery installed properly you can look at ROMs. Each ROM will have specific installation instructions including rooting if required. Good luck! :good:

Simple root and flash question

Hi guys,
Just moved form unlocked and rooted Mi Max 2, the boot loader of my Mi Max 3 is unlocked running Global stable 10.3.1.0 stable (PEDMIXM). Question: can I just install official TWRP (https://twrp.me/xiaomi/xiaomimimax3.html) and flash modded Global from https://mi-globe.com/ without any risk. Just hate to brick it
Seems like an easy way to root and mod.
Thanks in advance
Hmm, well hopefully someone more experienced will answer, but...
Globe ROM is based on miui.eu, who themselves remove ARB (anti roll back), at least as far as I'm aware. This shouldn't matter though, I'm assuming, as you'll be flashing newer firmware/vendor etc than what's on your device currently. See here for more info
As for TWRP, I'm not sure, I'm currently awaiting delivery of my mi max 3 so cannot say much more on the subject, but have been reading a bit about it, plus I have other Xiaomi devices that have run Globe ROM in the past. Sorry if it's all a bit vague, like I say, hopefully someone more experienced will step in and assist you. But that should give you a bit of assistance and some further reading!!
Also see here for further info on ARB of your ROM

Thanks for the detailed reply. Yes ARB is probably the root of my worries. Flashed the hell out of my Mi Max 2 without issues but as I said I'd hate to brick it so soon. I'll update the thread with my progress.
Again thanks so much for the info.:good:
For me twrp only worked once and only once and then i bricked it. After that i bricked and can never go back by fastboot TWRP again. Now every time i boot to TWRP, it goes to black screen with backlight lit.
What i don't get is how other devices like Redmi 5 Note Pro, Mi 8 can get twrp to work if they are also on the list like Mi Max 3 for the recent Anti Rollback.
I ALSO have the same question ,
I didnt unlock the bootloader yet but i want first to know is it safe to root this device i read many users saying the antiroll **** is causing bricking the device .
If anyone can tell us a detailed guideline or steps to how to root the device for the average non advanced users like us ,

the following:
to be on the safe side use fastboot boot recovery-image-name do your stuff and boot via stock recovery when you don't need twrp specifically
like this you can avoid issues with encryption
if you don't want that you can make sure that you get a version of twrp that has no issues with decryption.
if you upgrade API version, i.e. Oreo > PIE, only do that if you don't intend to roll back to oreo
unlocking the bootloader and rooting are straight forward and no different than for any other device, what has basically changed recently is
A/B partitioning as well as recoveries mostly being in boot (no separate recovery partition for most devices) and that encryption scheme
has changed in a way that twrp without tweaks (original) has issues with decryption.
i use other than this A/B devices like OP6, OP6T and one simply has to be careful and not just flash away, thins got less forgiving
but work nevertheless once executed correctly.
if you want TWRP permanently you'd have to flash the twrp zip via fastboot boot twrp.img or fastboot flash twrp.img (not mandatory) boot into twrp if you flashed and flash twrp.zip, boot into recovery first and directly and there you go until you flash a new system things are quite stable if you choose your variant of twrp carefully.

So, does root exists for Nokia 8.1?

Hi All.
Was searching everywhere last week and can not find the definite answer. I was thinking to buy the Nokia 8.1 TA-1119 model. However I am a developer and need root, so was trying to figure out if root procedure already exists for this phone.
There are some pages which give some root instructions, however they talk about installing the TWRP and as I checked, there is no TWRP for Nokia 8.1
So, would so much appreciate, if someone would give me some info, if root can be achieved on this phone?
While something is definitely possible and I have a rooted Nokia 8.1. But for your root requirements, I'd recommend that you consider some other phone which is more development-friendly.
First of all, it is super hard (playing with IMEI numbers and will have to pay), then the unlocked bootloader still doesn't allow booting or flashing any partitions via fastboot. So, pretty boring and it is equally hard to fix a bricked phone. Avoid if the sole purpose is an unlocked bootloader and regular rooting/flashing.
