After installing Emui 9.1 on Mate 20, Problems and Suggestions - Huawei Mate 20 Questions & Answers

Well, like some of you, I also received the update yesterday. I bought mine in France. Probably it's been 24 hours since I installed it and I need to mention couple of problems here. One thing is for sure, if I knew I would face these problems, no way that I would install emui 9.1. So, here they are;
1) Icon shape has changed completely. Icon shapes are something suppose to be show personal choice. It's not understandable why emui 9.1 force us to use all icons in rectangular shape. I want to use the original icon pack that app developers already designed.
2) Hidden notification content on lock screen is while having face unlock or fingerprint is OK, it's suppose to be like this, however, the content is also stays hidden when it's unlocked too. Therefore, it's not readable unless you open the relevant app. It has a relation with app lock. Before, when u unlock the phone, you could read the notifications, u just need face/fingerprint unlock to open the app.
3) sometimes it's showing that app updates are available on the task bar, and requests to connect to WiFi although the phone is connected to WiFi. It seems to be an android system application. And there is no way to turn off that notification. It appears for unregular periods, and dissapears unregular too. This problem came with the .266 update and still being problem with the .300(emui 9.1)
4) mistouch prevention detection system failure. Again, after the last emui 9.1 update, although I'm opening the smart cover, I'm receiving this warning saying " do not cover the top of the phone with a red figure showing the top of the phone and as understandable, the screen does not respond to touches.
Expected solutions before the update, and still waiting (noted down on 5 Mar 19)
1) Available memory(ram) problem, after closing all apps, it shows me that almost 1.6-1.7gb of memory available, I thought my phone had 4 gb of ram? This is a big question mark. (after all those updates, including emui 9.1,still continues)
2) Wrong notification vibrates, frustrating, randomly notifies me as I have a notification but when I check my phone, I'm not seeing any notification from any app, this makes the phone to consume more battery in a day because it happens several times every single day. (after all those updates, including emui 9.1, still continues)
3) Smart case speaker option during call; speaker button is really necessary to appear at the screen when there is smart case. Basically more call functions should be there instead of just answering and rejecting(also maybe mute button...) (still no option, even after emui 9.1)
4) option to set up eye comfort mode automatically based on the geographical location instead of user defined time, stock android 9 has this option(still no option, even after emui 9.1)
Sorry for long message, I hope you will share your problems, opinions and suggestions too.

I don't use the stock icon but what you mean with 4GB RAM? With 9.0 you got 600-700MB free.

Due to there is no ram management section in settings(maybe I couldn't find) where I could see how much left, what's system using, or apps etc., the only visible ram amount is right after closing all apps with a small notification. . There, it says how much left. And considering the 4gb ram, after closing all apps, I think there should be more than 2-2.5 at least free. Or, is there something running background we don't know?

Yes. Android is running.

So, if you know what system is running you should also know how much ram it uses especially with emui.

OK, I totally understood you, in fact I know this syndrome for a long time, it started with the person defending Apple more than Steve Jobs. Look, I'm criticizing that the free ram amount should be higher, and you are telling me, it's OK. Depending on what? Are you working at Huawei? Why are you defending the company like this? I'm happy in general with my mate 20 but that doesn't mean I cannot criticize. That's how development is happening since the beginning of humanity.

You really dont know anything about Android, do you? And why do you assume that i work for Huawei? The amount of minimal RAM used by system doesnt depend on them but on Google. And if you have any knowlege or even checked something before writing you would know that in any other phone with 4gb of ram, is it Samsung, Xiaomi, Nokia or Asus the amount of RAM used by system is almost the same. So, before saying something check the subject better.

The phone brands you talk about have a ram management section in the settings, I have used them all, do you? However, as I said in my first message, there is no ram management in emui, so, basically you are just assuming. Why are you defending soo hard something you are just assuming? What are you trying to accomplish?

Again. You dont know anything and you are trying to be clever. I used many phones, and my first android phone was Samsung Galaxy then Galaxy S2, LG G3 and G5, and many more pass those years. I even dont remeber them all. And for your information, there is ram management section. Learn more, understand more and then write.

Your link is not working, so if there is a section, instead of sending me that directly, you chose to defend your parent's company, Huawei, well done! I hope one day you will wake up from your dream.

Nope, it's not.

Once again you prove that Technology is to much for you. The link works perfect, for me and for my friends as well. Try to do things properly. And one more thing. I told you before, you dont know anything about Android and its ram usage, you lie about knowing other phones, because their ram management is almost the same as huawei. So, before you name someone as fan boy you should learn more about Android system and maybe then you would not write those stupid opinion. And another thing, mate 20 is my first Huawei phone, and I dont defend them because i like them, i just think that if someone without knowlege think that he is smarter than anyone else and he knows everything, but its excatly the oposite i should react and defend them. Its as simple as that. You dont know the ram usage of Android, you dont even know that you can check that usage in mate 20. And without that information you accuse Huawei.

Cool down kid, you are just proving you didn't deserve even a single reply. Everyone is seeing what's happening here. Take care, be calm. Stress affects mental health.

Kid? [emoji846] Im 36. And once again YOU prove that without any understanding of Android system(you dont even know that in developer menu you can check ram usage), you just write false acusation towards Huawei or in the matter of facts any other producer because ram usage is very simmilar. Those are the facts.

Sorry folks, I didn't want you to read all of these ridiculous instant replies from this guy, but these kind of people are everywhere, we got immune, no problem so, anyway, if you are still experiencing the same problems as I do, please share your opinion too.

No one is sharing the same opinion [emoji1787] the ram usage is good, the icons change its shape as the dev wants in his themes. Thats why no one is writing. You have problems with your knowlege(lack of it), not the emui [emoji846]

EMUI 9.1 Google voice
Hi everyone!
On the software update description, I read that with EMUI 9.1 update, we can launch Google Voice assistant by holding the POWER button.
Ive tried that several times but never was able to launch Google Voice Assistant. Instead it prompts me to either RETSRAT OR Shut down my phone when I hold down the power button for a long time. Lol
Please suggest. Thank you and make it a great day yall!

System UI

Hey people.
Small request.
Can anyone give me the working Xperia Z Ultra System UI?
Saw it somewhere and can't seem to find it now.
Thanks
Right now, I found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40464201
Though I am not sure, if this will really work on our phones.

That's the Z system ui plus that won't work on the arc s.
I'm taking about the Z Ultra.

Need advice. Repair my Z1c's broken display or go for the Moto E 2nd Gen LTE?

Hi guys,
should I repair my broken display (I would do it myself so the cost will be way lower than buying a new phone) or should I buy the Moto E 2nd Gen LTE? I ask because I want to know if I should go with the new AMRv8 to have the (claimed) benefits of the new SoC and Marshmallow or if I'd still benefit from Marshmallow's new features like better battery life etc with the old AMRv7 and a 32-bit CPU.
I know the Z1c will probably never get an official Marshmallow update. I'd just use a custom ROM.
If I should go with the repair, is there any way to be certain I purchased a genuine Sorry display (no matter what the seller claims it to be)?
Last summer I broke my Z1c display, and I picked Chinese fake one. It was 25€ posted. The display is not genuine, and even had one dead pixel out of the box (very hard to find it, not seen when you use the phone). It works well, and I'm 100% satisfied.
The Snapdragon 410 will never be in the same league with the 800 performance wise. You're also trading 2 GB of RAM for 1 GB, 20 MP for 5 MP and 4K recording for 720p. You see the pattern?
If you want the Moto E as a second phone, yes sure that is OK, but swaping the Z1C for that... never!

Yes, you are totally right. I am very well aware of that. That's why I'm still uncertain
I just received an answer to my other question and it states that the Moto E will never run on 64-bit because of the RAM size. Wouldn't make sense.
But I'm still wondering if it is not better to have an ARMv8 phone instead of ARMv7 because of features like better battery management and therefore longer battery life etc. Or will I experience these features with ARMv7 running Marshmallow as well?
If you're not interested in a phone that has all the above I wrote, sure, the Moto E does have a better battery life looking at the review on gsmarena but not by much (browsing battery life is same). I really don't know why you would want to get the Moto E though. Just the newer Android experience and a bit more battery wouldn't be a decisive factor for me considering all the downsides.

Well, that's why I'm asking
If the new features aren't all that better I'll stick with my Z1c
Well that's your decision to make. Balance the pros and cons and decide what you want.
I already gave you my opinion on the matter. As I said before I don't see any big pros for the Moto but that's just my opinion. Don't think I can help you any more. The rest is up to you. :fingers-crossed:
I have used both devices. The Z1 Compact is simply on another level...Much better in everything (including better screen, camera,CPU,GPU,build quality) and it's waterproof.
Why a low-spec Moto E? Why not a Z3C or Z5C?
Are you stupid? When you'll go to Moto G from z1c u'll be shocked. Moto G is a low spec smartphone and may be laggy. But z1c is still one of the best phones, you know he was released in 2014 and in this year is very popular high-end phone.

And would be kinda though decision, on one hand, chinese digitizers and displays are often big degradation, bad display quality, random phantom touches and so on, on other hand, you would have new phone but much less capable. Personaly, I would maybe repair Z1c and sold it, and bought myself something different.
Anyway, good luck with decision, whatever you choose.

Thanks. I chose to give it a chance and bought a spare part. Turned out it was an AUO manufactured part instead the JDI one shown in the pictures although I specifically asked about exactly this beforehand. But well, they agreed to a partial refund. It is not Sony branded since the touch screen is OEM, same quality just not Sony branded. Cost me about 38 € and I can't see any difference to the original display at all. I'm pretty satisfied

Buying this watch..how is Android Wear 2.0 on it?

I have been a bit frustrated with the smart watch market because at least for me, every new company release seems worst or uglier than the originals.
For example, I have the LG Watch R with a sand/tan colored strap and I love how it looks but every other LG release has been ugly IMO.
So I have decided to get a more formal wear watch which took me to the Huawei Watch but it seems version 2 is also pretty ugly so I rather get version 1.
How is Android Wear 2.0 on it? I had to force 1.5 on the LG Watch R because 2.0 ran like crap on it.
Thanks!!
I've just moved from the Sony SmartWatch 3 to the Huawei W1 and am impressed. Screen display and clarity trump Sony but do miss ambient light sensor. When I first updated to 2.0 the watch is seemed laggy but noticed it was trying to port all apps from 1.5. I felt that 1.5 ran better on the SW3 but factory reset and it's been running smooth for past couple of weeks.
Few other niggles with notifications not always working but I think that is 2.0 in general

I recommend you get it, in my experience AW 2.0 is very good,I myself never miss a single notification which is connected to my Galaxy S7 Edge.
There was one glitch though ,Google voice didn't work properly with WhatsApp, but after latest Google app update it had been sorted out, now works 100%.
Thanks guys. I am getting one then!
Guys. I have some problems with wear 2.0. Created 2 thread in question and answers. Right now I am n it fully happy with this. Google feed not working for me. Sms send in in contacts app not working. Fb messenger not working. After read and clean notification on my s6 edge Plus notification are clear but messaging app still show sms as unread.

I wanted to buy the gear s3 but tizen was a deal breaker for me so I got mine 10-24. I bought watch 1, IMO watch 2 looks ugly . Updated to 2.0 same day and really happy with it . Using a dark face that I've created myself. I turn it off while i'm sleeping. I get 4 days of battery life (6am-11pm). Only drawback is I have the red glow problem. But again it doesn't bother me cuz I got it for $150

Can change registry save my lumia 1520 battery.....

I just see my old lumia 1520 and take it from a box again.
2 years ago I gave up it because of suddenly shutting down with incorrect battery display.
My lumia 1520 suddenly shut down when it is 100% battery and when I turn it on it sometimes show 100 battery ,sometimes near 0%, when i charge it, it is full from 0 to 100 with 30min.
By field medic app, i see a battery capacity of 13300.......
Since i unlock it with interop tools, if it is possible to solve the problem via changing registry ?
I try hard reset and even roll back to wp 8.1 and upgrade to win 10 mobile again, the problem still exists...
If the only choice is to change a new battery......

Don't buy a generic like that. You need to be very picky in choosing replacement lumia batteries. Choose a better battery or buy a broken 1520 for 30 bucks sand yank the old working battery out of it and put it in yours.

Should I get this phone?

Hi guys, currently using Mediapad M5 but I'm starting to get a little bored and frustrated with things I thought I could live with like no headphone jack and no ear speaker. Thinking about getting the Mate 20 but I have a concern. I'm a dedicated user of Nova Launcher and have read about people having difficulty changing the launcher. Is there something I can look out for when buying the phone to ensure I have a version that will allow me to delete the Huawei launcher or change the default? Also I'm interested in anything else you guys can advise me to look out for. I'm in NJ and I use ATT. I'm assuming I should be looking for the international version, but other than that I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Hello there!
I am a big fan of big phones and I understand why you would want this phone, its dual speakers are great and headphone jack sound is the best I have heard with dolby atmos.
You can only change launcher on global version (EVR-L29) like mine, non-stock launchers work great!
I suggest you to buy the global version and not chinese for less bloatware, working notifications, working 3rd party launchers, fully working rom out of the box and gapps.
There are 2 versions of the phone Global and Chinese; Global version is EVR-L29 while the chinese version has 2 variants - normal EVR-AL00 and a branded china telecom version EVR-TL00
I personally got my phone from a local store near my home which luckily had the evr-l29 in stock, but I suggest to look on amazon for internation version or ask some people here

I'm in the USA and have this phone. It works great on att but here is the problem. With a locked bootloader you have no options once Huawei stops supporting it. I have the Chinese version so you deal with little quirks here and there as well.
I got mine when I was in hong Kong. Everything works perfectly including google, nova launcher. And works in Canada on all networks so I assume the US should be good as well.

I got rid of my tablet and only use my Mate 20 X phone and laptop. My Mate 20 X has replace my tablet. I watch movies and shows on it all the time. I initially thought that 7.2 inches is too small to watch movies. 8.4 or 10.5 would be better. BUT after a few weeks, this is the perfect size for consuming media for me and it's light enough for the pocket. I don't miss my tablet at all. I sold my phone, tablet and laptop and only use this Mate 20 x and a PixelBook. Happy as hell!

I dont agree with you about holding off and videos, the videos I took look way better than my friends xs max.
I wouldnt hold off, huawei confirmed that every existing device will still get updates and security updates as well as confirming emui 9.1 june 27 and android q request for mate 20 x. they wont remove gapps or android from existing phones but future ones wont have them
Thanks for all the input. I will likely pull the trigger this week. So just to confirm, with the EVR-L29, I should have no problem using Nova Launcher, correct?

Correct. With the global version EVR-L29 you can use any launcher you want. See attached..
If you have the root time, you can change it in Chinese easily

Get it, You won't regret it. Best phone I've ever had. I replaced my Note 9 that I had for only 2 months with this phone. And I barely use my tablet now.
But make sure you put a glass screen protector and a nice case before you use it. The glass one on Amazon is perfect.
The only thing I don't like is Telegram App does not always toast new messages. The OS automatically kills some apps that run too often in the background.

But you have the options to remove apps from that self killing "feature" though
