No, because it is supposed to work that way. The band doesn't have its own wifi or cell phone data, so, how do you think it fetches information? It fetches information through your phone, through Bluetooth. If your phone is in airplane mode how is it supposed to be able to download weather information?
Should have mentioned I turn on WiFi, gps, and Bluetooth in airplane mode. So only the call is disabled. Then weather can't get updated which I think is ridiculous.
Might be actually a problem of your phone rather than Mi Fit. Some "optimized" skins like MIUI are quite aggressive in killing the background activities and sometimes work unexpectedly. Are other apps getting your location and updates correctly with airplane mode on?
I use note 7 with stock MIUI. Location access for mi fit is allowed. Any other settings need to be enabled? Google maps work fine with gps with airplane mode enabled.
Mi Fit doesn't use GPS for weather location as far as I know, only for workouts. MIUI might be blocking coarse Google services location in airplane mode which uses primarily mobile network (and additionally to this also nearby Wifi networks and Bluetooth devices - depending on your settings).

I already mentioned gps works with Google maps with airplane mode being enabled. So you can rule out it's the MIUI setting that's causing mi fit not to update weather in my situation. Thanks for the suggestion for the app though, but it won't help. I think it's the mi fit that's not updating weather when in airplane mode even when WiFi, gps, Bluetooth turned on.
In other words, mi fit requires cell phone to be enabled in order for the weather to be updated.
Maybe someone nice enough can try it and confirm please?
Enable airplane mode, turn on gps, Bluetooth, WiFi.
Then try to update weather. It shouldn't update.
Don't confuse GPS and location services. One uses GPS satellites (power intensive), the other cell network info (low/no power consumption). Most of the weather applications use Google location services as there is no reason to pinpoint your location with such accuracy as GPS provides and hence they use low power method.
When you switch to airplane mode, it is possible that your phone loses access to location services (as they obviously can't scan your mobile network). As Mi Fit (and many other weather apps) don't use GPS to update the weather location, they don't know where you are. Some apps will use the latest known position, others will give you an error. This is why I suggested to use that app on YOUR phone, to confirm if you have access to location services with airplane mode. Also make sure that you have wifi and BT scanning enabled. If it's working fine with other apps, then Mi Fit is definitely the culprit. If not, you need to try different settings on your phone.

Asked the god of internet (Google), and solution was provided. Followed below instruction except skipping step 5 (since I don't believe in God all the time?)
And this fixed my issue without having to enable cell (or disabling airplane mode). What's note worthy is that the instruction is originally provided for cell being enabled. And it works with airplane mode enabled too. That makes me think it's a bug in mi fit. And there probably are many users facing this issue. Otherwise gearbest wouldn't be providing such info either.

I guess that there aren't many people who have Mi Band 4, use weather feature and switch to airplane mode (and then enable GPS, wifi and BT) at the same time. Submit a bug report from within the Mi Fit app so it gets to Xiaomi developers.
But this is an workaround for should-be-working-feature. I submitted the report as you suggested ?
Yeah, it definitely should work. I just wouldn't keep your hopes high for the fix in Mi Fit, Xiaomi usually doesn't care about "corner cases". But maybe they'll surprise us..

I've had the nexus toro (LTE) for 5 days now and have had issues with the GPS since the start. It simply says 'searching' all the time and will not lock. I've installed GPS status, and it shows that it rarely if every sees a satellite (one might pop up, be gray for a second, then disappear).

Don't; that is not a solution. On my Samsung Fascinate soft restarts would help get a lock on, but shortly after the GPS would lose connection to satellites.
Having to restart your phone every time you need to use GPS is a ridiculous inconvenience. This seems to be a major flaw in the chips / radios that Samsung chooses for GPS.

It doesn't have to be Google Maps it self. I have it in other apps as well which use the GPS.

One of the main reasons I upgraded from the Galaxy S (fassy) was that it's GPS chip went from working not very well to not working at all. If I'm paying for a smart phone, I would like a to have GPS and maps.
So far I have not been disappointed with the GNex's GPS at all. Maybe I lucked out. Try downloading GPSfix from the market and see if that helps.
I have the exact same problem here in Sweden, went for a run and it would not lock on to any satellites at all during half an hour. Really disappointing, thinking of returning it due to this...

Hello fellow GNex users having the GPS issue.
I was having a GPS problem as well where when using Google Maps or Navigation, the GPS status would say 'searching for GPS' forever.. maybe after 10 minutes it would get a lock and operate normally after that.
I downloaded an app from the android market called GPS Test to try to get some better idea of what could be going on.
When I ran the app, I noticed my phone would pick up a few satellites (satellites in view) usually 4 or 5 satellites, but it would never use them, they would just appear as in view without being used for a location, and the GPS test app was never able to report my location. From within the GPS app settings I was able to clear aGPS and update aGPS, but the same behavior would reoccur where the satellites would be in view but would not be used for location.
I tried toggling Wi-Fi, clearing out other location methods, and even going into airplane mode to use GPS only, but same behavior.
What I finally did was clear aGPS once more and then immediately power off the phone, pull the battery, wait a couple minutes and then replace battery and power back on.
Upon going back into GPS test, I did an update aGPS, and then I started to immediately pick up satellites and use them for location. Toggling all the same data connectivity settings (Wi-Fi, location using towers, airplane mode etc) I was continuing to get the same positive response.
I have tried to use google maps and google navigation again and am getting near immediate GPS locks. Comparing this to my Nexus One, the lock is much faster and with about the same accuracy.
This seemed to solve my problem for now, I hope it might help anyone else.

subsonicbug's method was the only thing that got my GPS back to usability after several very frustrating days during which my GNex could barely see two or three satellites (and not get a fix on any of them) even under an open cloudless sky.
He or she is clearly on to something...now let's hope that we (and by "we" I mean people way more knowledgeable than me) can figure out why a significant number of Galaxy Nexus devices get so far out of whack that only a soft GPS state reset followed by a battery pull can get GPS working again.
there's actually an easier way that doesn't involve a battery pull. download the app "gps status & toolbox", press menu, tools, "manage a-gps state", reset, after a soft reboot go back into the app, follow the same process but instead of pressing "reset" press "download" after the download you should be good to go. hope this helps!
FasterFix works for me, make sure you have busybox installed.
The unit I'm currently using says location unavailable after resets, pulls, wipes. Hardware problem? I do get intermittent flashes of use.
Here is a fix that may work. I had the same problem and this worked for me, got a gps lock with gmaps in less than a minute. I have the VZW GNex, rooted bootloader unlocked, works with any rom.
Conditions needed:
1. Phone needs to be rooted, I believe, if you have success with out root please share.
2.file explorer, I use root explorer
Now follow these steps:
1. Open root explorer, or any other file explorer
2. Navigate to /etc
3. Ensure the system is mounted r/w, if using root explorer press mount r/w
4. Open gps.conf with text editor
5. The first line will say NTP_SERVER=north-america.pool.ntp.org. Where it says north-america it could list a different continent depending on your location.
6. Edit this line by removing the north-america
7. It should now read NTP_SERVER=pool.ntp.org
8. Save the file and exit
Now open open any app requiring GPS and you should get an instant lock, or pretty close to instant.

The problem is when I switch off all forms of data except cellular coverage, my location changes to a City where I'm not at. I went to that place maybe thrice since I got the phone.
My location in Maps, Weather or even location saved along when I take pictures will be that other/wrong location.
Its easily fixable by just starting one of the data services, but why should I even face it in the first place.
Its happened on all ROMs and wipes don't fix it. Done a full wipe twice from cwm.
My GPS works normally when I'm using maps, it takes about 30 seconds to get a lock on my location.
Any workaround or solution or fix? (except for not keeping data switched on all the time)

Location without GPS is online service. I hope that answers your question about "fixing" it.

There's three things at play in plotting location: 1) GPS, 2), aGPS, and 3) Geo-location
GPS is the onboard chip functioning alone to pick up satellite signals and lock on them. You can test how well your GPS chip alone works by putting the phone in airplane mode and rebooting it.
All aGPS does is use a wireless signal (Wi-FI or cellular) to help the chip get its first lock faster. Once lock is established the chip is on its own.

"Assisted GPS is a system which can, under certain conditions, improve the startup performance, or time-to-first-fix (TTFF) of a GPS satellite-based positioning system. It is used extensively with GPS-capable cellular phones as its development was accelerated by the U.S. FCC's 911 mandate making the location of a cell phone available to emergency call dispatchers."
Geo-location uses wireless signals alone to approximate position. Devices w/o a GPS rely on this for location based services.

Once the chip locks, it memorizes the position of the satellites. If you want to test the performance of your chip itself reboot it in airplane mode. Download GPS Test from Play. It'll give you a much better picture of what's happening with your phone. I just tried it on mine and indoors it locked and got down to 15’ accuracy in less than a minute. Conditions affect performance but, at least outdoors, yours should do as well or better than mine. If it doesn’t, it’s a h/w problem.

Well I switched on GPS and put my phone in airplane mode and restarted. The Maps App keeps saying "Your current location is temporarily unavailable" and I can't figure how to use the GPS Test yet.
Okay, I did get a lock-on from the Maps and the GPS Test app. I went closer to my window lol . Now I'll see if my location comes up wrong.
Edit:Location came up accurate in weather.
Edit2:Location is accurate in a photo I clicked with everything off.
By accurate I hope you understand what I mean, when all the data goes off the phone should still think its in the place/location where it was when the data was on. Ii.e Surat in my case. But what used to happened before today(gps in airplane) was without data the phone will think its in Pune, which is a 12 hours drive from here.
I'm not the only one who's faced this, some say its a bug in sense :/

If so, this sounds like a software issue or a carrier issue.
If your GPS has poor reception then I would advise getting warranty repair. It might have the same issue as the Wifi antennas do.
Yeah just so you know pure GPS is line of sight, you have to have a clear view of the sky to work (no clouds either).

My location when all services are on shows up fine. But say I have a weather widget and all my data services are off, instead of showing the location detected last when data services was on the widget and other settings will show another city.
I'll explain it with an example.
Lets have a hypothetical country with all the letters as its cities.
I stay in 'S' at present. I have visited 'P' and 'M' a couple of times but I'm back to 'S' now. On the occasion that my data services switch off, intentionally or because of weak coverage. Instead of showing 'S' as my location in the weather widget, app and geotag the phone will show 'P' which I had visited days ago.

I've disabled my Location and Google Play Services battery consumption reduced.
I've noticed that every time when I unlocked the phone, the system tries to access GPS - I can see for 1 second the the location symbol appears in the notification toolbar.
Previously I owned a G2 and didn't have the issue, with G2 you unlock of the phone and G2 doesn't try to start GPS, the location symbol doesn't appear in the notification toolbar! simple and battery efficient. Not the case with G3. Don't know what stupidity they did or what they've modified.
I don't know if is a Lollipop issue or a bug in LG G3 software.
It is stupid and drains battery fast.
I want to keep the Location active because of geotagging photo information or for using googlemasps. But it is annoying to start manually the location when using this.
I hope there is a workaround to this issue.

Not only that you must be root to use the application, but it is not ok in my opinion to have this functionality on the phone.
I get 2-3 days of full battery with location turned off!
With location turned on only 1 maybe 2 days!!! big difference !!!

With Location ON it can be seen in the Settings->General->Battery->Battery Usage , that GooglePlayServices eats up to 20% battery when location is on.(daily usage) and as I've said previously the GPS is accessed every time you unlock the phone and go to home screen. You can see it in the notification toolbar the symbol of the GPS is ON for 1 second. I think that is the reason why it eats up so much battery.
When Location is OFF the Goolge Play Services (that includes also the Location Manager) eats up only 4% battery consumption and you don't see the GPS active each time you unlock the phone
From this I figured it out that GooglePlayServices has a bug or the sofware phone has a bug.

youp, tks , that solved the problem! I did a previous factory reset but after the new update I have to do it again.
This is not ok. Every time you get an update you must do a factory reset... not so ok.
My battery lasts now about 3 days. Google Play Services eats about only 2-3% of battery.

I unchecked precise location (gps and network) and checked battery saving mode (wifi network based location) only in Location and this saved my batterylife.

I like the geo tag posision to use with the camera application so... I like the location to stay ON. the only bug that I had was it was accessing gps every time I unlock the screen.

LocationHistoryInjectorService
and bug is fixed!
but after some time ... even with this services disabled ... the problem reappears.
It is like some other service is reEnable them again even though in DisableService they are off(red).

It's not Play Services, it's some app that uses its API. For me it was LG Weather app.
I fixed it by setting my location manually in its settings.

I've removed the widget from the screen. The same!
Even placed the location manually in the settings of the widget.

After all it shouldn't be the widget weather app. It refreshes the location in 3h interval.

Playing around with DisableService, I've stopped other services that were in use by GooglePlay.
Android system pointed out that GooglePlay has an error and needs to be updated from PlayStore.
I've updated GooglePlay from PlayStore and I don't have this issue anymore!!!
I leave my location ON all the time, I don't have battery drain anymore!!!
I think is a bug in GooglePlay version application that the ROM is coming with.
As soon as you get(update) GooglePlay form playstore, the phone behaves normally.
This way worked for me.

Is anyone using the Wi-Fi location scanning for more than a day successfully? I use it to know when I'm home and when I'm leaving home for Tasker. It appears to turn itself off after maybe 5-10 hours. I have a TA-1045, running stock, unrooted 8.1. I've already tried factory resetting it. Admittedly, I did add my apps back after resetting but I've never had this issue on previous phones with the same apps. Also, I tried turning off battery optimization for anything with location in the name; i.e. "fused location" and "location services". Ideas? Thanks.

I'm using lineage 17, the second to last update, on a Samsung Tab 4 and I just want to restrict the device to the system GPS app GPS I've set (but it keeps drifting).

Yes, Gapps installed and working well (version for Android 10, nano),but I'm not sure google settings would change what would be in the device system settings. I guess I'm just looking for some way to force that missing setting without having to resort to tin foil around the device.

I'm not tin-foil-hat-concerned with Google knowing my location; I'm referring to the systemized GPS app I installed to be able to determine the location I set. Which it can currently, and can usually continue to do when I can set the device to take GPS from "device only". In this case it shows me on the map "rubberbanding" between my actual location and the location I've set about 100 feet away. This is because the OS is allowing the device to try and locate its own location.

With previous (before 17) it was possible to set the location service to be switched on, but only use cell data.
When I use the gps device it drains my battery much faster.
Therefore: How can I leave the location service on, but DO NOT USE the gps device in LOS 17 ????

Do you try to spoof your location? And why? What location providers do you have? GApps?
I guess your reply refers to my question.
Maybe I was not clear.
With former LOS versions I was able to explicitly choose whether to use the (battery draining) gps receiver for my location or not.
I have several other sources of location information (gsm cell based and wifi based) usually with less accuracy. But I may prefer theses under certain circumstances because of less power consumption. I Don't use google but microg.

No. I am not trying to spoof anything. I have an automation program called Tasker on my S4. When I was on stock Samsung ROM (5.0.1), I was able to use the "location mode" in Tasker to switch between high accuracy and battery save. If Tasker detected I was running Google Maps, it switched on high accuracy. If not, it switched over to battery save. From what I can tell, high accuracy used GPS + network and battery save used network only.
Now, I'm on LOS 17.1 and battery save would turn on GPS too. It seems the only way to not use GPS is to turn off location mode altogether. This makes me wonder what the differences are between Device Only and Battery Save modes. Since I cannot tell, I am assuming both modes are provided for backward compatibility to Tasker users but the underlining Android 10 doesn't differentiate them.
I am suspecting with Android 10, there are only 3 modes.
* GPS + network
* GPS
* OFF
Thus, if one needs the location service, GPS must be used.

Network location is not part of lineageOS. You can add it with GApps or microG. Have you?
Enabling location does not power the satellite receivers continuously. It really needs battery. The job of your tasker script is done by android 10 automatically. If you suspected apps to drain battery with GPS, disable their location permission!

I'm using Gapps, the nano package. Do you know which one comes with network location? I can't tell because this comparison chart doesn't show it for any packages, https://github.com/opengapps/opengapps/wiki/Package-Comparison

The reason I preferred to keep it on battery save instead of off completely in the old days was that if I ever lost my phone, I wanted to be able to track it. Now with Android 10's mandatory GPS for location service, if I want to disable abusive apps from requesting unnecessary location service, which app should I avoid disabling? Which app is giving out my phone's location if I am tracking it remotely?

I think the answer to both questions is Google play services. com.google.android.gms It's the mightiest app on your phone. I avoid installing it.

I still see one drawback with very selectively granting apps location service. For example, I do want to grant Chrome location service to facilitate better search. If I'm indoor, wouldn't GPS without a clear view of the sky trying very hard to get a fix and thus burn more power than necessary? With that said, can High Accuracy (GPS + network) actually be more power efficient under Android 10 than Battery Save (GPS only)? This is assuming Chrome would give up on GPS when it can't get a fix and be happy with just network while Battery Save would keep trying to get a fix with GPS. Again, this is just my assumption.
