Swift Installer/Substratum Alternative without rooting - Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Themes, Apps, and Mods

Hi all,
So, got my note 10 today but swift installer won't work without a root which is a pain as I paid for the app as it worked on my note 9 but now its useless.
Useless in the fact that I have no clue how to root my phone and no doubt would probably brick it.
Anyone got any ideas as I can't take the glare of all these bright apps lol....need them dark again.
Any help appreciated

Go to settings>display>night mode, it's system wide dark mode. Looks like it will have to do until someone tries synergy and substratum lite on the Note 10. I've already had to do a FDR trying some of the things that used to work.

Yeah already have it on night mode, I'm used to having 90% of my apps black though from my note 9

Same here, guess for now night mode will have to do. There are a few apps that have a night or dark mode setting, trying to find as many as I can.

yeah, there's not that many in fairness which is a pain, you'd think by now they'd all have the option

I'm using synergy and themes well. A few posts are in apps forum about it.

So you're saying that Synergy and Substratum Like are working on the Note 10+? I've already tries some of the old stuff and had to do a FDR and don't want to do another one.

Working fine. I'm on note 10 using swift black

Even better, try Hex Installer from the Play Store. It allows you to customize theme colors such as background and accents. My favorite feature is the setting to reduce the roundness of UI elements, more like the Pixel. You can also download a plug-in for an Android Q theme which gives the UI a completely new look.

started using that too but swift black isn't actually black, it's grey which is disappointing. Tried using a deep black one but it didn't do all of the apps I wanted so went back to swift black for now. I hope swift installer make it non root compatible for the note 10

Did you dl and install the dark mode button? Mine is deep jet black.

I've set up Synergy and Sbstratum Lite with Swift Black theme but I still cannot get the OS themed black in settings and top nav, but apps and notification panel are black. Any tips? I dod install the night mode apk but when I try turning it on i get a notification that I can't turn it on while using a theme

Some of the themes require dark mode for theme to work properly. For that go back to Synergy > Menu > Dark mode settings and enable it. You have to dl the new dark mode button from the menu in synergy.

Thanks! Haha, the instructions are not very clear on that. I did the install for that component and was attempting to turn Night Mode on in the quick panel, but you have to do it through the Synergy submenu after install. Got a sexy black theme now!

Go back into Synergy, hit the settings button on the bottom left and hit night mode settings. I believe it will have you download a plug in the first time and after that ittl bring up a setting letting you turn on system dark mode!

Which apps do you use for customizing on your SONY XPERIA XZ1C?

I just use Transparent theme via Substratum. I want to know yours. How about you?
I use SX Darkres so that I get black notifications on my lockscreen.
Then I use Spectrum to theme my Chrome and Chrome beta, this gives me a lovely black Google landing page.
Swift Black for everything else. This gives me the best results on all other applications and gets updated all the time from the Dev.
Pyrope browser runs with adblock built in and also has a night mode that lets me run my Facebook in black. (I don't run FB battery killer app)
Edit: I didn't buy all these themes for my XZ1 compact. I invested in several that were originally Layers for my Z3c before that was depreciated and turned into Substratum.

I haven't gotten around to theming yet (but I'm gonna, need to get rid of all this white stuff), but apart from that, I'm running Custom Navigation Bar (https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-custom-navigation-bar-customize-t3590967) to add a left and right key to each end of the navbar (really missed these from my Z3c). I didn't choose any icon, so they're not visible, so I don't need Tasker to detect in which context to display the arrow keys.
I run AutoNotification (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joaomgcd.autonotification) to hide the annoying "running in the background" and "is displaying over other apps" notifications for two specific apps.
The app displaying over other apps is Internet Speed Meter (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.glitter.internetmeter), which adds a floating widget to the status bar, that displays the current up/down speeds (another feature I miss from my rooted phones).
Other than that: Nova Launcher, because it's just more stock-ish and greatly customizable, Gello Mod because I got used to it from eXistenZ ROM on my Z3c and has an adblocker, YMusic for YouTube, now that Xposed isn't available (gonna try iYTBP at some point) and Lucky Patcher to clone apps.

System UI, Android system, Calculator, Call management, Phone.
Pretty sure there is overlap as I have System UI and Android system selected in Swift Black as well. But it seems to take Swift Black for the system settings and SX Darkres for the notifications.
SX Darkres is the only theme that successfully mods the phone dialer and quickdial.
Cool, thanks bro

I have a little app I wrote to mimic the shake for flashlight/torch toggle functionality of the Moto phones.
The first time it's run, the lamp goes on. From then on, one or two light "karate-chops" should toggle it on/off. Caveat: the screen must be on for the app to function.
The permissions dialog states it requires use of camera, but in reality it's only the lamp. No pictures are taken .

No spamming intended. The topic asks about apps used for customizing the XZ1 Compact phone. This is an app I use to implement a custom function. I am not selling anything. However, you are the final arbiter in these matters, and if you say it's inappropriate, then so be it.

Appreciate the kind and mature response.
The way to do this correctly, is to open your thread with your APK and provide the link to it in this thread. Then, it is cleaner and has the added benefit to bump your status as a recognized contributor. So, if in the future, you are ever interested in pursuing that title, you built history of being recognized contributor.
Peace !

Under what category/subheading would you feel it's most appropriate to create a thread for the apk? Would that be "Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Themes, Apps, and Mods"? Just want to be sure.
I realise that this is a rather old thread but has anyone been able to get substratum to work properly on Pie?
I mean Sony's release of Pie, not AOSP.
I keep getting white textboxes in settings due to "Android System" not being patched correctly. It shows no error though.
Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately the white spots, such as inside bluetooth where you would normally read "Connect/Disconnect" and such is unreadable.
The new notification inside settings is also still white.
I'm going to wait and hope that perhaps DarkRes will be updated to Pie.

S9 dark - theme/menu/icons/navbar

I have always been a big fan of Nova Launcher Prime but having just received the S9, I thought I would give the stock launcher a go. The only thing that annoyed me was how bright and white everything was.
To remedy that I used some tips from this page:
https://goo.gl/tPfLM6(it wouldn't let me use the original android.gadgethacks URL)
Theme:
I couldn't find the "Material Black" theme mentioned on that site so I went with "[MINU]Black Edition V2".
I installed the .apks (BlacknotificationsOnly & Blackframework) and rebooted.
Navbar:
It annoyed me how I couldn't just select a black or transparent navbar. Hiding it (immersive mode) seemed inconvenient, so I went with "Navbar Apps" (available free on play store) which allows you to pick a pre-set/custom colour or even an image to use for the navbar. Again, transparent only didn't seem to work, so I stuck with black which I am more than happy with.
Navbar Apps on playstore - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.damianpiwowarski.navbarapps
I am pretty happy with the result so far but I can feel myself being drawn back to Nova in the future, just for the clean look and more customisation options.
p.s. for anyone interested

I've moved my theme on to "Mattblack" now which I spotted on another post - http://www.samsung.com/global/themestore/index.html?appId=com.set.mattblack.common&SITE_CODE=uk
I originally restored the Nova setup which I was using on my S7 but it just didn't feel right and I couldn't be bothered sorting it out. Also I have noticed that the battery drains fairly quickly, it is the first week so I still have AOD and some nice shiny settings on to show off the phone. I think I am going to have to have a look through everything and see what I can turn off/down/live without, when I get time. How is yours looking after a week?

Spotted a few people saying EE and CFW staff have advised a UK update is going out Friday, lets see what that brings. I know it is early days and the device won't be optimised yet but I am slightly missing my S7 which I didn't expect to be saying.
Material Black is available for the S9/S9 now - guess they had to make an update for compatibility. It's not free, but I tried a trial and WOW is everything black. Maybe a bit took black (i.e., dark grey might be easier to handle), but still quite nice looking.
I'm trying the stock launcher, but while its nice, I do feel Nova knocking. Mainly because i'm so used to 6 icons in my bottom tray (dialer, chrome, maps, contacts, messages, camera along with the app button) that it seems odd without it. I like how I can swipe up, and my son was having a hard time trying to find my games (his sister who found it right away), but I'm going to give it a bit more time.
eleven os black theme takes care of that for you, including the nav bar. I like how it's blacked out, but has slight color touches throughout, preventing it from looking dull.
Without that massively annoying Bixby crap the launcher would be really nice, but that Bixby page just ruins everything. I'm back on Nova and it feels way better.
how did you guys get it to work? it wont work on mine. is it compatible with oreo?

again.. you guys don't need to install separate things when one theme does it. look at my previous post.
For an overall black theme I'd recommend Substratum + Andromeda companion app (required for the S9,) though not free. And then I would get the Swift Dark theme, which also isn't free. So you're overall looking at around $5 (I can't check the price now.) It will take a minute to learn how to use it effectively since you need to select specific App Update Versions for what you have installed, reboot once or twice, but it's not that difficult at all.
Skin not compatible with Facebook. Will work for Messenger but only App Version 145 and 146 Stable. (See 2nd image.)
I use LockClean, Navbars, and Swift Dark when it comes to Substratum ... pretty much handles everything except for Facebook itself, which is a huge shame.
The icons pack I use is from Samsung Themes; Black_Edition_V2 by MINU
My launcher is just Nova Launcher Prime.
Here's some screenshots from my Sprint S9 non-root with everything applied:

Well, so far so good. The only negative thing I can say about this release, which may improve over updates, is that Samsung's apps just seem to take maybe around a second more to load.
The dark mode and the adjustments all over the UI for one-hand operation overshadow this one small complaint.

I also updated from Oreo to Pie and was running substratum with sungstrum plugin. I deleted all the themes and cleared all caches and restarted before upgrading to Pie. When upgraded it was all fine but when switching to dark mode all my system apps went berserk and started force closing. Switching back to light mode solved that problem. But apparently there where still files from substratum conflicting with the dark theme. So I had to reset to factory settings and after that the problem was entirely gone. So maybe this is a heads up for some one else before upgrading.
The first drawback I encountered is the app drawer. When trying to move app icons to the bottom part of the screen it sets it automatically back to the top position. I find this very strange given the fact that Samsung wanted to let us use the bottom part of the screen more than the top part. Now I still have to reach to the top part of my screen. Not very "one handed" friendly. I use my icons in groups maybe that has something to do with it.
For now I still have to discover the upgrade more, but it looks promising for now. Its fast and the UI is smooth as butter.

Beta is finished now so chances are she's either on the last beta or final already, check if the members app opens the full app or the beta OneUI part

Pie Dark Theme not working?

Hi folks,
I've just got one of these excellent phones and the first thing I did was upgrade to Pie.
All great so far, but the Dark Theme under the advanced Display settings doesn't seem to do anything.
Anyone else got this problem? Really don't like all the white backgrounds.
Thanks for any info.
Have you tried to set a dark wallpaper first and then choose the dark theme?
Can confirm it's not working the normal "Pie" way. You still have to use the "Oreo" way initially like slimshady76 said you need to trigger it by adding a dark home screen wallpaper and set the themes setting to auto. Once it's triggered you can change the theme settings to dark and switch back to your old wallpaper, dark theme will stay now. If you wonder how it should look like, check this out
Just to make this clear, it clearly should work without the trick in Pie as it does on Pixel phones. Probably a bug that comes from updating from Orea to Pie if I had to make a guess.

Not because of upgrading, because I flashed full ROM with MiFlash and the issues persist. The bug level of this device's "official stable" Rom is just wow.
What I meant was that the device was made with Oreo, thus every Pie version for the A2 lite is just an update. It would probably be working if it would be developed on Pie right away.
All I can say is that I didn't notice many bugs after updating directly from stock Oreo to the latest stable Pie. However earlier Pie versions seem to have been more unstable.
Thanks for the replies.
It does seem to work using the workaround for static wallpaper, but if you choose a live wallpaper it reverts but to white. Is this likely to get fixed in a future update?
Is there any way to get the 'settings' background dark?
Thanks again.

Not Yet, real dark mode (with everything being dark) will come with the next android update though.
check out the app swift installer. it can change your whole system and most apps to darkmode. working pretty good for me.
alternatively you can wait for Android 10 release to get system wide dark mode
Thanks for the Swift Installer suggestion, but was hoping to avoid rooting at this stage.
Guess I'll have to wait for Android 10.
It seems even the Pixel phones don't have a dark 'settings' background yet either.
I've found solution by accident. If you use Lawnchair launcher, you can set device theme in launcher settings, and it has more options (like dark, black, etc) while it still remains system wide. And best of all, you can use live wallpapers as well without it reverting to light theme.
hi;
i have something strange with my darkmode on mi A2 Lite (10.0.13.0, magisk/edXposed)
drawer, quick settings from notification bar, sound mode change, google app, dialer, chrome, agenda, all have dark mode
only settings menu and google now (on the left of main screen) have light theme
anyone here have the same problem? or even a solution?
thanks to helpers

Any method to change the default 'Blue' colour throughout the entire phone?

Is there a way to change the 'Blue' colour default theme to other colour without installing any theme? Cos I want to maintain everything as default but only the colour changed.

Yes, you can do it with a theme from the samsung theme store or you can use substratum on an unrooted Note 20 Ultra. How to use substratum has checnged from the first post but toward the end of the thread are the new procedures.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/substratum/official-starting-substratum-andromeda-t3798316
Here's one example of substratum.
.....but, OP said he DID NOT want to install a theme and wanted to keep things DEFAULT

Substratum looks sweet. Gonna have to check that out.

Hex Installer allows you to keep the Samsung theme but change the UI element colors. You can even fine tune the background colors. No root needed and no wonky Substratum setup.

AFAIK there's no way without a theme or app...............................................................just giving the OP options!
The app is Hex installer.

By default it's already using a Samsung theme!
Changing the Samsung theme is reversible and causing no performance impact (except live wallpapers and such).
>Many themes* to chose from, I recommend one of high contrast themes.
>Choose the homescreen wallpaper you want.
>Then chose from one of the hundreds of free icon packs on the Glaxy Store.
*use themes to get the keyboard, phone dialer, messages theme etc that you like best. As per above the rest are interchangeable.
That's the trick and the fix. It's time consuming but works well.

Gonna check out the Hex Installer, seems very promising.
It you want to stay on default you can use this at the bottom of developer options.
Themepark in Goodlock.

I just changed mine from "Default" to "Purple", just to make it really pronounced - could not find a single thing on the phone that had changed to "Purple"? I even rebooted just for laughs - still nothing, settings menus, it says "accent color" so I have no idea what that could even mean? I did spend about 30 minutes digging around the phone checking all kinds of stuff to make sure I didn't miss anything - finally put it back to "Default"!

Interesting
Samsung and/or the carrier may have disabled it.
Or it was an experimental beta feature.
Developer Options is fun... in Pie I have some that seem to do nothing that are indexed under "Feature Flags", an experimental feature.

I didn't know about this... Thanks for the tip.
What changes when you change the theme color? When does it change (after restart? Immediate?)?

This dev settings option is from stock Android and was originally the only way of changing accent colours on devices running stock before Google added its own theming option later. It has nothing to do with the way Samsung implements theming and accent colours in One Ui, and for that reason does not work on Samsung devices.
The only thing that the developer option did on my side, was to change the background colour of default system icons that got no icon.
Here are two examples : one black and the other cinnamon.
Why dont you try the following apps developed for Samsung and you found them in Galaxy store:
Good lock has a bunch of modules to create your unique theme
When you use Theme Park module to create a new them make sure you tap on the top right corner on the sun icon to choose the dark mode. Basically when you create a new them you can create one for light mode(sun icon) and another for dark mode(moon icon) in one package as one them.
If you dont like the quickpanel you can change the colour scheme on your like using Quick Star module
Keyboard you can make a new theme using Theme Park (Keyboard section) ,the possibilities are endless ,make sure again you tap on sun icon to select dark mode for keyboard ?
Then use Keys Cafe module, submenu "style your own keyboard " to add key/motion effect when typing
If you want to go even further, then you can create your very own keyboard ,customised the location of the keys and add functions to them
Check attachments and YouTube link of the theme keyboard
