Ad Blocker for Note 10+ - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Questions & Answers

Apart from Adguard, are there other ad blockers that not only block system wide ads but also remove the ad placeholder(I think that's what it's called) on the web page, instead of showing a grey box with sad smiley face where the ad is suppose to be?

Blokada works pretty good. Tried Samsung disconnect (Galaxy store). A bit pricy and recently started giving up on some ads..
Blokada works great for ad blocking. You will need to find it on the internet, as it is not in any store. The down side it is a VPN based app, even if you do not use the VPN portion of it.

It does on the phone apps I am using. You can try for yourself.. blokada is free ...

I use adguard, that does a somewhat good job, some ads stll showing, but I like the firewall it provides, does blokada have it too?

I have a Raspberry Pi Zero running Pi-Hole. Definitely a recommended option

At home. Doesn't really do anything for the rest of the time someone isn't at home.

This way should also work for Note 10 / Note 10+. Basically should work for any android device, after Pie.

Tried that, blocks ads but doesn't remove the ad placeholders on the web page like Adguard does, removing the ad placeholders is the main reason for my thread.

I did not change the default DNS and it works the same way , plus it saves data download, so over all performance is same as without it on, not sure what you did and/or experience..

I have an Asus router and dynamic DNS from asus is free. My pihole is exposed to internet and I use that from outside if I want. You can also just use adguard's DNS as your custom dns and get a "free" pihole option.

I got app from Note 8 days called Disconnect Pro from Samsung Store and it works with KNOX so its system level ad blocking and it works fine with Note 10+

The DNS option is cool but it's never been a better solution than what I have experienced with rooted options and also adhell.
I still get ads.
The pi hole thing is cool and all but frankly I don't use my phone that much at home and my computer's are already adfree

well i got it for 5$ as part of promotion

I'm a developer myself and a tech enthusiast, and I don't mind spending $$$s on things I like.
My reviews are based on four factors.
1. Strength of adblocking,
2. Security
3. Price
4. Ease of disabling adblocking.
The reason why I need to disable adblocking from time to time is because of some redirection links don't play well with adblocking. And some other situations where I need to click on an ad.
Paid:
1. Adguard Pro: In my opinion, the paid version of adguard does the best adblocking via the VPN it creates. It also works with socks5 proxy if you want to use a secondary vpn like PIA. This is exactly my preferred setup, I paid for a lifetime subscription for this for $12 for 2 mobile and 2 computer license. Yes, I did get a good deal at that point. It is also very easy on battery and I highly recommend this if $$$s are not a problem.
1. Strength of adblocking: Perfect (can add custom lists if more blocking is needed)
2. Security: adblocking is done locally on your phone so highly secure. Your request URLs and data isn't going out to a remote dns server.
3. Price: expensive
4. Ease of disabling adblocking: easy, just from a dropdown in notifications.
Free:
Now let's come to adguard DNS or pihole as a DNS server option. Adguard DNS blocks all ads for me. You can use it either directly by entering it in the settings (I dont like this option though because if you temporarily want to disable adblocking, its pain in the butt.) I like using the DNS servers using a simulated VPN app for DNS changers. There are quite a few available on play store. My favorite one is : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aykutcevik.dnschanger
Adguard DNS via DNS changer:
1. Strength of adblocking: high, but not customizable, whatever they offer as blocking you gotta live with it. However, note that they are pretty good with blocking ads. I never felt any problem.
2. Security: all requests go out to a remote DNS server, which either allows the request or blocks it. So not secure at all.
3. Price: free
4. Ease of disabling adblocking: easy with a DNS changer software.
PiHole via DNS changer:
1. Strength of adblocking: High, you get super high control over ad blocking.
2. Security: The DNS server is at your home so its secure. Your data won't go out to any other company.
3. Price: Needs an always on server running at home. People usually get a raspberry pi for this. If you need adblocking outside of your home, you'll also need a dynamic DNS service or a static IP address, which can be expensive. But you get what you pay for. You can do a lot more with this setup if you are a tech enthusiast like me.
4. Ease of setting it up and disabling adblocking: You need to be technically fairly comfortable with linux to set it up. There are some simple scripts and guides online though. Disabling is easy though.

Flash Now TV Box with Roku LT firmware?

I had a look around the forums and couldn't find any information about this and was quite surprised to be honest.
Now TV Box: sorry, cant post links, but you can google it. It costs £9.99 as opposed to £35-49 for the Roku LT.
Already known that you can side load the Plex app for the Roku, but most people would wonder if someone can flash Roku firmware on this.
As far as I know, this Now TV Box is a rebranded Roku LT box with locked down interface.
Maybe I am wrong, maybe this is not doable or maybe no one can be bothered.
I am confident that someone will be able to do it with JTAG interface, but I am wondering if it might be possible to get flashed using the dev mode and some sort of script.
So the main question is, do you know if someone is trying to flash this box or not.
Hi, not much help, but I was wondering the same thing, I have picked one of those up and would certainly like to turn it into a fully fledged Roku box.
I can understand why Sky have limited the box, but the amount of limit they have put on is a bit bad, the only way to install unofficial channels is as a zip, and I cannot find many zip files across the internet ?
Anybody have an sources for them ? Or anybody tried flashing this ? Does anybody have an official Roku that they could try and backup the firmware from, or is it somehow linked to the box ?
---------- Post added at 10:30 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:26 AM ----------
The other option may be a proxy which provides the official lt firmware as an update instead of the now tv one ?
I too am playing with this box. Plex is set up but I have encountered a snag when installing plex onto my lmited NAS.
So am too wondering if this can be flashed or what other apps are available as Zips to sideload?
So, no one working on this?
Also wandering the exact same thing! Just got mine ordered today. It would be great to get it to be just like the normal roku as it sounds like they've limited the apps for it quite a bit.
Hopefully someone can figure this out!
NOWTV Developer access gone?
I have just got the NOWTV box and have tried to get developer access - so i set it up on thenow tv box and it told me it was enabling developer mode.
However i cannot access the developer webservice from pc browser and even ping won't detect the NowTV device.
I got it in the 1st August and it immediately updated itself - i wonder if they have removed this developer access page.
Anyone any ideas?

just installed mine got plex on before I put the net in due to your post lol however the update does not kill dev mode
I got Plex on through the developer interface no problem, but I've not found many other apps out there available as source, so this method won't be very useful if you want things like Netflix, etc.
I've had a play about with the settings in the other secret menu (home x5, FF x3, RW x2) letting you change the channel store server and the software update server. The software update server can change from beta to release, but both just reinstall the same version. Changing the channel store server gives you 4 or 5 options, but only the main one actually work, the rest just return an error when you try to access the store, and in some cases the channels vanish from your home screen, so this wasn't helpful either.
What's worth mentioning is that, with traditional Roku LT boxes, you'd get a "link code" that you'd enter on the Roku website that lets you send channels from their website to the box, among other things. This NOW TV box didn't offer that code at all.
One last thing, in that secret menu I mentioned before. At the bottom of the info dump on the left, it ends with Uptime in minutes, followed by "unregistered". I'm curious what this means. Could be something to do with the Now TV subscription, not sure. If anyone has a NOW TV subscription, could you see if this says "registered" or something else?
Nope

I'm afraid not, I have a now TV package and it still shows as 'unregistered'. I suspect this is where it would say registered if the Roku box was linked to the Roku website, but as theres no link code... :/

Thanks a lot. If you're right, I'm wondering if the capability to generate and display a link code is still available on the device, only hidden. If there is, there may be a way to get the online store to send non-Sky-authorised channels onto the box without the need to change the firmware. Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised if the function to generate said code is hidden away from 3rd party channels. I'll keep having a play.
Now I don't own one, but if we can get this sorted I will be picking up a few.
Has anyone looked to see where the device tries to pull its updates from?
We could spoof a local server to delivery a standard Roku LT firmware to it instead. It see an update it does its install and bang. £10 Roku LT box.
Here is some info I found relating to the ROKU Netflix Branded box, sounds like a similar sort of affair.
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~ecc/roku-nfp.html
A Signing key is needed. Not that this is a complete dead end, im sure that something can be hacked into place here. Its just a matter of the right people getting hold of the hardware. We can already run executables. Do executables not have the rights to 'root' the box?
I know fudge all about Roku development, so dont shoot me down in flames please.
Sci.
[Edit: This guy wanted to 'change the firmware' - if we use this method with official firmware, maybe the key is the same and it would work?]
You can register a new account on the first form page of buying and simply close the second page asking for payment details.
Some anonymous Roku dev might be able to release a sideloadable Roku OS for this box?
I've been trying to hack the communication between the nowtv box and its servers using a mix of redirection on the firewall and burpsuite; like others I want to see if I block sw updates and then get it to download standard Roku firmware.

No luck I'm guessing yet then?
Have you discovered anything that could be handy for others attempting this?
Good luck btw!
Looking at the PCB, it seems that it is a depopulated board, its all marked out for the USB and everything else that is removed (see images below, sorry not my images). Though it does like its more than just the USB connection, it looks like some SM resistors and other bits are missing as well

Where do I start...
With regard to tricking the LT firmware onto it (which was my plan) this does appear to be a no-go.
It makes an HTTPS request out to Roku for what I imagine is some kind of manifest/xml which dictates what the latest firmware is and some kind of hash to verify it.
The box will then download the firmware over HTTP (yay I thought..) so dnsmasq to the ready I renamed the LT (aka giga/024) image, it downloads it but fails to verify (error 006).
The firmware images themselves still require a lot of investigation, uboot and a kernel are in there plain (as you would expect) but the main filesystem is still to be found - after routing through the GPL pages it would appear to still be cramfs with different magic, but even then this isn't visible in the firmware so most probably encrypted.
(#define CRAMFS_MAGIC 0x28cd3d47 /* cramfs as modified by Roku */)
Encrypted by what?
Again judging by the roku GPL source, they store a 16byte aes key within the Broadcom Videocore - I can't envisage this being easy to recover without userland access.
(static unsigned char aes_k[16];
vc_otp_read(46, 4, aes_k)
Random Info:
Windsor does appear to be the codename for this box (makes sense for a british product I guess), other code names are giga, paolo, jackson and austin.
Mapping them out is not so straight forward though, the below is likely wrong:
ID -- Codename -- Model
024 giga Roku LT
025 ??
034 paolo ??
045 austin Roku 3
??? jackson ??
Failed Ideas:
MITM (SSL is validated - as you'd expect)
Firmware Interception/Replacement
thttpd exploits
Ideas Still to Look into:
Generate SSL certificate with "api.qa-uat.roku" as a subject alternative name, cycle channel store server to that and see what we can see.
libzip exploit (dev package upload - possibly too much hard work tbh, would need to know the target binary well)
There is a 20 pin arm jtag header exposed on the board...

You can also sideload the MediaBrowser3 plugin for Roku.
See here if you're interested.
Maybe writing a Roku plugin/app that loads immediately upon start up and blocks the channel to Roku or similar constant/var place holders to stop the firmware update?
I found the thread on HUKD where someone had managed to break updates:

Block Ads without ROOT on ONE UI.

****Here are the steps to block ads natively on Pie using the PRIVATE DNS feature.****
****This will allow us to block ads system wide(for apps without built it resolver) without installing additional apps or plugins.****
Step 1. Settings> connections > More connection settings > Private DNS
2. Enter : dns.adguard.com .. or
dns-family.adguard.com (for nofap?)
3. Press save and enjoy ad-free experience.
****These are secured adguard servers with integrated ad-blocking.****
#### For Chrome, type chrome://flags in searchbar... Type ' async ' in search. Click on #enabled-async-dns and chose 'disabled' . Otherwise chrome could use a built in dns resolver which doesn't block ads. ####
So along with blocking ads you also get a secured encrypted DNS. ?
Source: Reddit
The system-wide Adguard DNS protection is not customisable and limited in terms of blocked hosts. Rather, I would go with DNS66 available on F-Droid. It allows customisation of blocked hosts as well as DNS and individual apps can be whitelisted.
I also use dns66 and it works great. Thanks for the chrome tip. I was wondering why it did not block ads in chrome but now it does.
Brilliant.
I use adguard solution. It satisfies me perfectly.
Dns66 keeps vpn connected all the time. I am pretty sure, that it makes load on procesor and battery. Fact it is probably safer when connected to public Wifi
What's the difference between those two addresses dns.adguard.com and dns-family.adguard.com ?

good VPN+ad-blocking

Hello guys am looking for a good ad-blocker that blocks adds pretty much everywhere internet, apps like twitch games etc. i been using BLOKADA for a while and i really enjoy it but i would like to use a VPN at the same time and this is something BLOKADA cant do at the moment. and yes i know BLOKADA now has their own built in VPN but it only has 3 gateways and cant stream Netflix. if you guys have any VPN with a build in ad blocker like BLOKADA please let me know or any VPN that works with an ad blocker doesn't have to be two in one i dont mind having 2 different apps if need it thank's in advance.
I use adguard. Has a few customizable settings in case you want to block some things but free up others. Not sure how much it costs though. I remember someone linked to the russian site where you could buy a lifetime activation for a fraction of the US price and i jumped on it. But blocks pretty well, i've forgotten what it is to browse or play games with ads at this point. Just a suggestion

I'm already aware of it not only xiaomi if you have FB installed it does so same for google apps or almost any apps, Im using some tool to monitor my network and im not even using my phone and I see that it's always exchanging data on the internet just to know that I didn't enable any cloud thing or any sync also I have put some Data on my phone when I was away from home and it went out so fast after I checked the apps that used it I found that almost 200 Mb of data is missing but it wasn't used by any app so there is an exchange but it's hidden, im thinking of using another rom and check

Agree generally @loopypalm however I have been using AFWall+ and whitelisted (allowed) supposedly only 4 installed apps - but no system stuff. According to the logs it is blocking literally 000's of requests from the kernel/system and others. However I installed GlassWire the other day and it is showing it exchanging data in and out daily for "Android System".......... :-(
If accurate not sure there is any way to stop that as it must be buried very deep?

Karma Firewall, freeware that uses almost no battery.
China and the CCP are one in the same. The risk of embedded hardware, firmware and software spyware or back doors is high.
The CCP is insidious and nefarious... if you haven't noticed it already

It's a VNP based firewall. It runs best on Pie or lower. With Q and above you lose it's logging function. I'm running Pie so I haven't tested that... and don't plan too anytime soon

Easiest thing to do is either don't load crapware or firewall block it.
Amazon, WhatsApp, FB, Instagram, LinkedIn etc never are installed on my device.
Lots do then wonder why their battery life sucks and they have no privacy

The problem with those social apps is two fold. All the personal data the user willingly supplies that can then be weaponized against them is the primary issue.
People shouldn't know everything you do and think.
These virtual trash apps have ruined many careers and lives. They are now a source of disinformation and are heavily censured unless you think "correctly". It is a means of controlling the masses by a few.
You're not the customer... you are the product.
Fk that $hit.

I've been using some (very few) mobilism apps for years without any ill effects.
Even if you don't use FB yourself, that by itself doesn't exempt you from its tracking, as you'll notice if you follow the tip below.
If you're rooted, another way (which doesn't always work, sadly) would be to get OSS App Manager from F-Droid, see what trackers are there for any given app (you're clear if none are listed) and block some or all of them... YMMV.

If FB, Amazon etc is preinstalled either package block it or firewall block.
I prefer using Package Disabler to kill them although you can use ADB to do it.
I keep locations disabled unless I need maps which is rare. Helps battery life too.
Lol, FB is pure poison...

Yes, annual subscription. Use the none Samsung variant. I can't say how well this variant works. The Samsung version works well but won't block Google play Services. I've been using it for over 2 years.
They do respond to emails promptly.
{Mod edit: Link to paid app removed @blackhawk )

Question How to block Ads in OnePlus without root!?

Suggestions other than using blockada app.
adguard, adaway VPN mode or private DNS
I am using next DNS service. It is customizable, so you can turn on or off lists, add things to white list etc.

And how to use/enroll that?
Register on nextdns.io, than you can set up which lists you want to enable. In your profile you also get address to use in private DNS option on your phone.
If you use that option all your traffic goes through nextdns, so it blocks out ads and robots on websites, but also on installed apps.
There is one disadvantage - it is free only for limited number of queries - more than enough for me, but some really heavy users may not find it enough. Nevertheless it is so worth to try if it works for you. Even so I have my devices rooted I don't yous Adblock etc, preferring nextdns.
If I helped you, you can use my referral link do register: https://nextdns.io/?from=ydnp2mzn . It doesn't cost you anything
Oh wow, thanks! Will check it out
Why do all forget the most important thing about DNS/VPN? Privacy!
All your traffic is routed over a unknown server. You have no control over your data! If you want use such a service, use your own. If you have a good router at home, you should be able to run a VPN server on it. In combination with Pi Hole, you have your own private and ad free VPN.
Mobile -> VPN -> Home -> PiHole -> Net

You can use Adaway in VPN mode.
If you're willing to learn, have a look at setting up pihole and pivpn. I route all traffic through my setup.

I second this. I use my pi as a plex server and pihole dns server. I LOVE it. Never found myself freaking the **** out about dns requests until I started looking at traffic statistics
Adaway rooted works a treat...
Set Private DNS to dns.adguard.com
