How to setup my phone to read books but not use up a lot of battery? - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Questions & Answers

How do i setup my phone to use black and white when i'm reading a book? I want to take full advantage of the AMOLED display and save both my battery and eye's.

I believe the phone does that automatically and switches to low Energy mode by reducing the Speed of the processor in cases of activities that don't require high Performance. You can as well activiate the Adaptive Power Saving which learns the usage Patterns and reduces or increases the Performance (therefore the power needed).

You download an ereader with support for amoled, true blacks.

Auto Backlight

Hello folks,
I'm used to keep the auto backlight option enabled. When playing around I disabled it and turned up the slider and i really like the phone with a brighter screen (well, don't we all ). I wondered what consumes more power though as I really haven't got a chance to test it. Does the auto-backlight consume less power than full constant brightness if you consider that when enabled, the sensor has to poll the lightstrength constantly (consumes power too i guess). Does it actually make a difference?
Secondly, does there exist an application which allows us to lift the level of the auto-brightness? (Like when it sets itself on 50%, the application makes it 50+10% = 60%). Windows mobile's G-light application came quite in handy in this story.

massive difference for me when I turned this option on. As in a huge improvement of battery life. My screen is always the biggest power consumer according to my battery apps. The dimmer the better for batts. I am with you though I love them bright screens!
At a guess I'd say the brightness of the screen (no backlight, it's AMOLED! ) would be more of a factor than the low powered sensor which would most likely run constantly with the proximity and G-sensor.
The light sensor consumes zero power, it's a photovoltaic cell which supplies an electric charge in the presence of light.

I'm searchin for that since a while, too! But want to set the auto-brightness lower than normal.
And in night it could be much lower than the lowest possible setting... but no idea how to do that - with root it should be no problem!

Custom ROM, screen battery saving features

I'm wondering if anybody can comment on this in regard to custom Roms, ie. Is this something that can be implemented in a custom ROM?

Scaling down screen res

Hey guys!
I just wanted to know if scaling down the screen resolution has any impact on the battery life. All of you who have scaled it down, is there any significant improvement in the battery life?

There is an battery improvement but some Apps look horrible with This solution. I am back to 1440p and give a f**k about these 1 or 2 hours.

Is that 1-2 hours of SOT, or just usage?
This would all depend on the way you use your phone.
A. If you're a heavy user, (games & movies n stuff) then lower resolutions would benifit tons.
B. If you're a light user, (texts & emails n stuff) then the higher resolutions are very efficent.
There is a common misconception going around about this screen requiring alot of power.
The screen isn't what is draining the device so bad, it's the gpu powering the immense amount of pixels that is causing the power drain.
Now taking that into consideration, there is 3 things to keep in mind.
1. You're still lighting up 3,686,400 mini lightbulbs (aka pixels) no matter what resolution you run at.
2. Lower resolutions = less power draw from the gpu, mostly when the gpu is under higher loads.
3. The gpu doesn't require much power while under lighter loads
So to sum it up
Higher resolution + Very graphic intensive = Heavy power draw from the gpu
Lower resolution + Very graphic intensive = Medium power draw from the gpu
Higher resolution + Not graphic intensive = Low power draw from the gpu
Lower resolution + Not graphic intensive = Low power draw from the gpu
As you can see, under lighter loads 2560x1440 is extremly efficent and preferable by myself, but under heavier loads (games and stuff) 1920x1080 is far more power efficent on the gpu (if your games will even run), once we get a custom kernel for our phones a slight gpu underclock would be MUCH more effective than lowering your resolution.
All this talk of lowering the resolution to save power is rubbish, it doesn't work. Its just a placebo.
By far the biggest cause of drain on the battery from the screen is the backlight, not the resolution. Changing it to a lower resolution doesnt actually change anything, the GPU isnt even trying even at 1440P, it never scales past the second step (330MHz) in 2D. The only thing stopping the GPU from being able to display 4K or even 8K is the bandwidth, not the GPUs power. 2D is effortless for the GPU.
If you reduce the resolution to 1080P the GPU has to rescale that image to 1440P in order to fill the screen (the actual screen resolution is fixed and cannot be changed). All this does is add an extra layer of processing and costs you processor cycles.
In games this changes somewhat, but the effect isnt as big as some like to think. The GPU is still memory bandwidth limited in 3D even at 1440P, not power limited. To prove the point in Basemark X the G3 scores higher than the N5 and almost as high as the M8 and S5, despite having double the pixels.
I bought it for the resolution.. I'm not turning it down.. Otherwise I would have just bought an S5 Or a freeking iphone lmfao

Nice - i can confirm that the battery is great. Never has a phone with such good battery life.
But sometimes i wish i could deactivate all energy saving options, because from time to time it seems that some apps lost the possibly to wake up from standby.

I've been using this device for about 5 months now and the battery life for me has been great so far, but there's so much you can do when you need the juice in your battery last longer. In order to help those who want to get the best battery life out of their phone, I've compiled a list of things I do to make my phone last longer.
We'll go from the things most effective to the least and mind you, all of these can be done without rooting of using ADB etc. So let's start

If you want to get absolutely the best battery life out of your device, you must install a custom kernel. I'm using Fenix currently.
Also, turn off printing service. This idiotic thing is turned on by default. It keeps sucking battery for no reason at all. I'm not using stock ROM now but you can find it by going to: Settings>Bluetooth & Devices (or something similar)
Can you post the link of the thread for enabling dark mode I would like to try that.
Another tip - switch to airplane mode, mobile network is one of the biggest battery consumer..
But seriously, how does greyscale mode save the battery? Instead of glowing one of the subpixels for displaying a color, all of them must be shining to provide different shades of white color. It might even use more power.
Width change and animation duration scale have some very interesting thinking behind them, it will have absolutely no impact on the battery.
Dudes, just enjoy and use the phone. Why do you want to cripple your experience just to gain extra few percents of battery per day? If you're living of the grid, there are much better phones for such a lifestyle.

There's an XDA article comparing battery saving with AMOLED on black and grey theme, you might want to check it out, or you can also watch a video by Mrwhosetheboss to see how it went for him. As for animation speed and DPI, they have the least effect on battery life as I've stated above. Kindly do some research before you start making claims.

Where exactly in the article does it say that monochrome display saves power over colored one? Actually it's you who started with unique claims, so please provide some proof.
