N975U Root
Hi,
Can SM-N975U be rooted or is the same as U1 version?
Alternatively, is there a method to repair imei on N975U.
Thanks!

It could happen, and if there's an incentive big enough for someone to really invest in tackling this, maybe it's worth it.

As far as I know it can not be rooted because the bootloader cannot be unlocked. Samsung removed the OEM unlock toggle from the developer settings in the phone.
My main question is (I'm not very knowledgeable here so please excuse me if this is a dumb question) if the OEM unlock toggle is just hidden or if it is actually removed completely.
If it's hidden, maybe it can be turned on still somehow.

I would be in for $100 as long as it is full unlocked bootloader and can use twrp and magisk for example

It goes alot deeper then just having the oem unlock toggle.

Well, I think most people would want to keep Samsung pay, Knox, etc. Rooting is just not worth it for a Samsung flagship nowdays.

Mobile OS development would be comparable to Laptop/Desktop OS development if it was never commonplace to lock users to a single nonadministrator mode only OS on all mobile devices ... It's like selling you a house that comes pre furnished but you're not allowed to change anything, like buy a new bed.
I payed over a $1000 for this mobile cpu and I should be able to do whatever I want with my own mobile even if I do want to destroy it.
I got $100 on it.
Maybe if people stopped selling all the privilege escalation bugs they find to Samsung then maybe we would actually have a development community for Snapdragon especially now that they're shutting down the Exynos SoC

Why give up so easy on the right to have 100% property rights over what I paid for?
Would you like to have someone else deciding for your life decisions? Welcome to communism. Been there, I'm out and don't wanna go back.
The issue is that ppl have a tendency to accept this fist in the mouth like something normal, thus accepting the normality of locked bootloader. What if many wouldn't want to buy locked bootloader? Utopia right?
A giant tech like samsung doesn't care about a small fraction of geeks who want this unlocked bootloader.
Still, one can only hope ...

I'm in for $200 if it works on the Canadian note 10+ as well

I know chances are slim, but I will gladly give $300 for full root, tested and proven to work.
Can the OP update the the thread and let us know what the total of confirmed pledges has reached to ? Fingers crossed that this isn't just a pipe dream.....

I just wanted to update everyone on our progress, we have a
Grand Total of $1100
so far for an unlocked bootloader and root!!
Thank you all who have made a pledge for this bounty! I am also planning to start a petition on change.org to petition Samsung to allow our model to be bootloader unlocked! I will update my original post with details once I have finished writing it up. I just ask that everyone whose made a pledge to sign and share it on all your social media.
I am hoping XDA will see our progress and write main blog post about this forum post, to get the word out. [emoji1696]
In my opinion I believe we should have full right to products we buy and own. I paid $1200 out right for this phone, and feel like it really isn't mine because I'm being limited on what I can and can't do with something I paid for! I know many people feel my frustration.
Please share this in the mean time and spread the word!
Thanks again!!

Chainfire comments on root and future Android

Chainfire posted a long writeup of what the future holds for root on Android phones including Lollipop. It's an interesting read.
"As stated above, it seems for now that modifications to the kernel package are required to have root, we cannot attain it with only modifications to the system partition.
Combine that with a locked bootloader (and optionally dm-verity) and a device becomes nigh unrootable - exactly as intended by the security guys.
Exploit-based roots are already harder to do thanks to SELinux, and now because of the kernel requirements for persistent root, these exploits will need to be run at every boot. Exploits that make the system unstable (as many do) are thus out as well.
It is now thus more important than ever to buy unlocked devices if you want root."
Edit: Tikerz beat me to it. His post is here. Mods delete if you want.
No real surprise to me. It was only a matter of time before it got locked down to the point of no easy exploit. I'm surprised it took this long, actually.

man locking bootloaders is one thing.. but root??!?
its not even a poormans route anymore to get a carrier phone over a factory one, you need to choose between functionality or reception..
i wonder if Xposed is responsible for crazy bootloader security moving over to root.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA Free mobile app
The lack of root in the foreseeable future really ruined my excitement for this phone I have gotten so used to all the nice features of root (in addition to custom ROMs) like Ti Backup, AdAway, customization, etc. that I do not want to fork out the money for a phone that doesn't feel truly mine.
That said, I'm confident the devs will find a solution. Just like every iPhone has been jailbroken there will be root for the Note 4!
There is a root for the note 4.....just not ours ...as intended...if we want root we bought the wrong device...I got it the day before it came out in the mail and was excited I wasn't aware that it was going to be so neglected...I was at least hoping for a safestrap like the note 3 I had that I don't anymore because it shattered and they gave me this as a replacement...now I can't get root...way too sleezy...they got me!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA Free mobile app
I certainly don't see it as 'sleezy', as the devices were always known to be locked. It isnt like AT&T were endorsing root or safe strap in the first place... Or secretly locked it at the last minute without telling anyone.
But opinions on morality aside, it is disappointing that root may take a while. Though I'm still optimistic that it will happen eventually.

Yeah, if you can afford it, for the rest of us though, it sounds like we'll be out of luck.
Maybe we need to start looking at hardware hacks, like when chipping a console?
Maybe an insecure boot.img can root this phone.
Focus on the boot loader. If it gets unlocked we will be fine with root.

That would be the way to go if the bootloader will not be unlocked. It.will be like Playstation 3 .
nice having posts like this just right up front.... I come to xda for the modding and mainly rooting of my phones.... att releases a totally locked down note 4 and already people are speaking out about its probably not going to get an unlock like the s5... I give up all hope of seeing a subsidized note 4 and start waiting on a nexus 6 to see if the bootloader is still unlockable.
So within 3 posts and less than 15 minutes I learned abandon the att n4... quick and easy... ty xda :highfive:

Okay, so I'm not a senior member or anything here but I have been around these forums for some time now and there is almost nothing I want more right now than root and custom recovery for this variant of the s6 edge plus. My initial pledge is $100 for root only, and another $100 for custom recovery. Anyone that would like to help me with this thread will be extremely appreciated. Any advice will be taken with gratitude and humility. Let's create some motivation for all those amazing devs out there! Make sure to post the specific bounty you are pledging to, otherwise your contribution will not be added to the list.
Pledges:

Samsung has a deal with the two cellular giants, AT&T and Verizon. Samsung claims that the extra security against root access on these two companies is so that Samsung can grow as a device used for enterprise. It is a valid claim to a certain extent, but not really all that sensible. Samsung could easily come out with two separate versions of the firmware, one for the root loving, custom craving consumer like you and I, and one for uptight, dickwad businessmen. In short, Samsung wants more money from big corporations so they highly increase security that prevents root access, leaving the average civilian customer stuck with a very limited version of something they should be allowed to customize to their heart's content (being THAT WE FRICKEN PAID TOP DOLLAR FOR IT.) I hope this answered your question.

I am feeling pretty blue lately about the lack of talk going around about someone working on root for this device as well. Has everyone really given up? Are we really all going to crawl into a hole and let samsung and the 'evil big two' win here? I myself do not believe for one second that any system is completely secure. Ever. There is an exploit waiting to be discovered. I know it.

There's actually an app that DOES remove bloatware - of course it doesn't require root as I have used it very well for months now on my 928A.
It's called "Package Disabler Pro" and exists in the app store, I believe you have to pay a small amount for real functionality, but I was able to completely remove all AT&T bloat and all Samsung bloat.. but be careful - don't disable things you're not 100% sure of..
If you do make an error, you can always go back and re-enable that package.

Bootloader unlock and root access

I'm interested in buying the note7 but I need to know first that if it is possible to unlock its bootloader and have root access.
Thanks in advance
I can say with certainty that this phone, as with most android phones, can be rooted. Bootloader is a more tricky issue. If you are running the international exynos version root should come fairly quickly. If you are running the snapdragon version in the US, bootloader has to be hacked so be prepared to wait. Of course I am saying this assuming note 7 is similar to the S7. I am not a tech guy so dont quote me on these. But from experience, all phones gets root treatment with time. The question is how long you can wait. : ) Oh and be prepared to lose access to Iris scanner and Samsung Pay as they are directly tied to Knox.

I wouldn't speak so fast, there are enough devices out there with locked BLs that dont have root...after years.
And reading the S7 root thread its messy and really slows the device down, can't speak from experience but have a read in that thread.

Im with you , I always rooted my devices since I had a G1 (HTC Dream). Since Pie was released, and custom launchers are so good these days, I haven't bothered with any of my devices
....I do miss being able to remove system apps though (truly remove them) ahhh memories of the days when CyanogenMod was what a person would do immediately after getting a new device ....
I don't miss the headaches , the bugs, the constant flashing new roms, the constant clockworkmod/TWRP backups and restores ...
Android is now so polished that I honestly see no need for root anymore
The only need for root I have is getting my Proxmark to work with my phone.
I miss gravity box that's it
root is so much funner though lol

Is this still the only way to root on the U.S. variants? I have seen this floating around for some time and while I have nothing but respect for the developer of this method, I have never paid for unlocking or root and don't want to begin. I would like root, but my desire is not so strong so as to pay $100 to obtain it.
My last rooting experience was with the ENG kernel on my S7 Edge. It sucked. LOL. I know what you've linked isn't a root service but an unlock, however after growing tired of the instability with the ENG kernel I eventually went stock. So now I've been without root for a couple years and have learned to live with it, which is why I don't really want to pay. If that's the only way, though, so be it.

I know what you've linked isn't a root service but an unlock, however after growing tired of the instability with the ENG kernel I eventually went stock. So now I've been without root for a couple years and have learned to live with it, which is why I don't really want to pay. If that's the only way, though, so be it.

Is this still the only way to root on the U.S. variants? I have seen this floating around for some time and while I have nothing but respect for the developer of this method, I have never paid for unlocking or root and don't want to begin. So why aquire a device with a locked bootloader? There's lots of options for unlocked bootloaders even within Galaxy devices.

All of them? Samsung releases every model/device in the USA lol.. not sure what your question is.. U U1 W models are usually not possible to unlock bl and root without paid service so if you are asking about USA models that can do that by default then I cant think of any.

Has anybody had this done? It is tempting if they can actually do it!
Its real. My note is unlocked and rooted.
There's warning lights flashing with this one...
As much as I like (and miss) a rooted device, I would definitely err on the side of caution with this one especially if you use your phone for sensitive and personal things. Even then, with 3 mics and all those cameras the chance of spying is great! Definitely curious if this is real to have someone use network tools to see if indeed the modded devices are leaking things they shouldn't.
Plus 150 bucks is really outrageous! Where are the days you could just flash any rom you like...

Since there is currently no other root method $150 isn't too bad really.

We're all entitled to an opinion!
Its not some random person, it actually Samsung token. Device is completely wiped during process to prevent gathering data. Nothing nefarious about it. Been unlocked and rooted for awhile as is a ton of others. A couple reputable developers are involved. But like previous post to each their own.

^^^ What he says. It's a man on the inside of the samsung walls doing this.
So just to be clear. You can unlock the bootloader of a US Snapdragon Note 20 Ultra and all it costs is $150? Now this isn't the thing where you can only charge your phone to 80% and other stuff is it?

Had my AT&T Phone unlocked, Paid the $150, and since I did the old payment method (wire transfer) Had to wait a few days.
Fully charges, and You can flash TWRP/Root and U/U1 Roms without fear of losing Unlock. The only downside is the Bootloader being unlocked Trips Knox which disables some things like Secure Storage App and Samsung Pay and I believe Samsung Pass. I didn't use those and I have Samsung Pay on my watch which still works.
Also, the process will factory reset your phone like any bootloader unlock procedure.
Am hearing about this 150 dollars to unlock the sm-n986u bootloader, but we're is the link or company that does this?

to add some context, I now have usa source and do the unlocking myself directly (im in the usa) so no china source is involved in this process any longer.
but of course if you or anyone else has their reservations then its understandable. I wouldnt expect anyone to go through with something they are 100% on, i wouldnt either lol.
after all, my goal isnt to get paid its to offer a legit way to unlock the bl on devices that otherwise cant and of course to drive development on xda which im sure u can see theres more stuff being posted for usa models since this has become possible from twrp to mods to roms etc.

Thats awesome, I remember during my unlock waiting on the source over in China so you being able to directly do it yourself is a time saver and probably a lot easier
