Any way to make the display cutout area larger to cover the whole notch height? - OnePlus 7T Questions & Answers

Hi,
Any existing app/magisk module to enlarge display cutout range?
I can afford sacrificing some display area (in fact, I thought one plus 7t display area is too long), but I hate the waterdrop cutout.
Since the cutout aera is specified by a system app, any clue to create a custom cutout?
Thanks.

[Q] Chip? in top camera

I've just noticed what looks like a chip on the depth-sensing camera, has this happened to anyone before? I'll attach a photo of it when I'm at home.
Thanks

I see a white dot in front of the top camera, is that what you're talking about?
Anything visible in photos? If not, I wouldn't worry about it.

Yeah, that's the one, its not very visible on the photo but in person, it looks like a bit of dust on the lens itself.
I haven't taken many photos that utilise the duo camera setup yet so I'm not sure, it's more that its there than any affect it has

The Duo Camera is always in use, as the edit effects UFocus and Dimension Plus (and maybe others) utilize it. So if the "dot" is not visible in photos, I wouldn't worry about it.
Might in fact be dust. I actually also have a small white speck between the protective glass and the camera module. I noticed it soon after I got the phone, and it doesn't seem to have affected anything. Always assumed it was just dust. Although you would think they would assemble these things in a cleaner, more dust-free environment.

Yeah, that's what I meant sorry, I haven't used many of the effects so I couldn't tell if it has affected it
But ah ok, that's reassuring to know I'm not the only one and it doesn't have an apparent affect

Bottom cameras as buttons on CM

I was wondering if the 2 cameras at the bottom of the phone can be used as back and overview buttons on CM.

Not sure exactly what you mean? There's only 1 camera button...
If you're asking about programming certain buttons the best solution I have found is xposed additions. It'll let you reassign any button. Cost like $3 but works well.
I think his idea was to use the cameras as buttons... like "cover the lens to trigger a button command".
Even if it was possible, I doubt it's a good idea since most people will partially cover one lens with part of their palm in most situations. ^^
+1 for "additions" in general... can enhance the user experience on many "cheap" china phones as well (ahem, UMI...)

Ya, that's what I meant. My thinking was: if the cameras are capable of tracking head motion, they are capable of detecting Light and Dark conditions. Complete dark for a second could be considered as a single button press. While the palm covering the lens could present as a bit of a hurdle, I think by using a particular range of values for time and light, the two cameras at the bottom, which are lying useless right now in CM, could be used as 2 buttons.

 ONE thing you HATE about the Fold?

if you HAD to pick one Negative about the phone, what would it be?
amongst the list of things i don't like, i must choose the one thing i use every single day, multiple times a day.
the POWER Button.
my previous device (huawei mate 20x), had a taught power button which didn't wiggle around, satisfying click when pressed, and for a bonus, textured and colored.
the Fold: aside from failing to combine the Power button and the Fingerprint Scanner, the power button on the Fold is just like any other Galaxy device: cheap, thin, loose, and mushy to press.
anyone else have something that erks them using the phone daily?
I have problems with the fingerprint reader. I misplace my finger a lot. I miss FaceID it was so much smoother.
I don't use the button. I double tap the screen instead.
The front screen sucks. I can't text, email on it. It's so small. I love My fold, but the front screen kills me!

Thanks, it worked for a lot of my apps except Flipboard. For some reason it keeps acting like a phone app even when I set it to 952 dpi.

here is something almost everyone doesn't think about when wishing for an edge to edge, top to bottom, front display:
how much imbalance it would create on the phone. one handed use would be completely be gone.
- for someone not using a launcher: reaching up top to swipe down notification shade
- whether using standard navigation buttons, or using edge swiping: imagine reaching all the way down just to hit he navigation area
- people who use swipe one handed for text, it actually is perfect ergonomically the way it is now.
- not everyone has big hands
during and even before the Fold presentation almost a year ago, everyone was criticizing the front screen size without thinking about it in depth, and people STILL criticize it in newer videos, made 2 or 3 months ago.
all they see is bezel and think "its 2019/2020, wtf are we doing with huge bezels?!?!?"
i hope samsung doesn't listen to all these brainless people moaning and groaning about screen to body ratio % in their next folding tablet device.

Actually the front screen doesn't have to be all the front, but it definitely needs to be wider. It's just to narrow to write fast and without issues. It works, but it's cumbersome. I mostly swipe or dictate because typing is too annoying ?
To your main question, one thing I hate about the Fold:
There are some things which could be better, like the fingerprint reader integrated into the power button, no notch, S-Pen support, wider front screen, glass screen, IP ratings, faster charging (like Note10+) and much much more... but there's just 1 thing which really annoys me: the selfie cameras. They're all ****ty. Even compared to S7 until Note10+ it's just ****. The can't focus on something you tap. All Samsung flagships can do it. It's so ****ty I don't take any selfies anymore. Even using GCam doesn't change anything because it's a hardware thing. To be honest, they could have added the Note10 selfie cam on the small front and no other cameras. They could also remove the notch since the cameras are very bad ?

General Initial impressions

Got my Sunny Yellow one delivered this morning so been playing with it most of the day. Initial impressions are very good, some are listed below. Feel free to list your own.
The fingerprint scanner was a little off but after an update came in i deleted my fingerprints and re-did them and its been fine ever since. Couple of times it hasnt worked but i think thats because the screen is so smooth/slippery that my thumb slipped on the screen as it was trying to read it.
I dont have a 5g plan or even 5g signal where i am to test but so far 4g speeds are exactly the same as my pixel 2xl and oppo reno 2 ive come from.
I dont really like having the "internet" tile, id prefer having them seperate the wifi and mobile data tab. Just seems strange to add a further click to enable/disable wifi when i want to instead of just hitting the tab.
On the home screen if you make a folder then the apps slightly overhang the edge of the circle which just looks odd to me, i wish they were all within the folder.
I wish there was an option of disabling the big clock on the lock screen. I have a picture of my partner on my lock screen and when picking up the phone id rather see her than her face covered by a huge clock
The phone got very hot when setting up and transferring apps/data from my old phone but has been fine since.
I love the screen and how smooth everything flows. I dont see any issue with brightness personally. Ill see how battery life performs over the coming days
Hollow screen sound is a bit strange
Nova launcher crashes which is a shame because I don't like the search bar forced at the bottom of the screen on the pixel launcher.
Camera is brilliant
Power button is in the wrong place and should be swapped with the volume buttons is.
Lack of screen protectors available to get delivered is frustrating but not Google's issue.
It's fast, smooth and had a great camera. The rest I am still get used to. Prefer it to my S21 ultra, maybe not loving it as much as my Mi 10 Pro.
The camera hump on the back really exposes the glass to potential damage. If I were designing the thing, I'd make the entire back stick out higher than the camera glass, and fill in the space with more battery.
The rounded edge screen is pretty terrible. There are optical distortions along the sides. The radius of the edge should be reduced to around 1 mm.
A little more width on the screen would be nice. This is 71.5mm. Nexus 6 was 74, which was a lot nicer. 80 would be a dream.
A little bit of border around the screen would also be nice so you have somewhere to actually hold the thing. Function should be paramount, not form, and especially not goofy/ugly form like these have. A bit of border above the screen would make space to get the camera out of the screen instead of the ugly hole. I also hate the rounded corners on the screen. Software rounded corners are ok, because you can disable them, there is no reason to force it with paint on the inside surface of the glass.

feel the same way with filling up the space with more battery... but then you have ppl complaining about how fat the phone is
Love it so far, so fast and fluid. As mentioned above it gets real hot, and was still discharging while using old pixel charger.
Camera is amazing the details captured are stunning.
Phone is very slippery to hold and would be easy to drop with the top weight of the camera hump. Tried to buy a case for grip and protection, and was told that they can until tomorrow because that was the day the phone was supposed to be delivered, but because of our crap postal service they sent a day early so that people would or should get them by that date
Real time translation works very well, even with the new update still seems a little buggy
Screen for me is fine for brightness I have high brightness mode widget and it is much brighter than the 4xl
I could buy pixel charger which I might take back because it doesn't seem to charge an faster.
My wireless car charger for the pixel 4xl charges this phone at about the same speed as the old wall charger, need to see if it throttles for heat though..

I agree, but it also would be heavy
This is concerning "Nova launcher crashes which is a shame because I don't like the search bar forced at the bottom of the screen on the pixel launcher." Hopefully there will be an update to Nova soon.
All the negative feedback on the rounded edges are making me consider the Pixel 6 versus the Pro. I think the base RAM on the 6 is fine. Giving up the Zoom is tougher to consider.

There as a day when heavy meant PREMIUM and light meant junk.
My laptop (lenovo), not even old, actually had some weights added into it to make it feel more substantial.
And so what if its a little heavier as long as it isn't burdensome. You can easily carry around several pounds without it being burdensome.

If you were referring to the rounded CORNERS, there will be kind-of software solutions for the rounded corners. Right now you can run "wm size 1440x2890" to reduce the display area (persistently). This brings the display area past the camera hole and past the rounded corners. Now normally, there would be a system property available to adjust the corners, however this one has multi-radius corners which are set in a config for systemui, therefore will actually require a rebuild from source to fix, but once that is unset, it should have square corners.
However the side effect of course, will be a slightly smaller display area. Still wider than the non-Pro, but less than it is now. Not that you need all that height for any practical purpose.
And for that matter, you could use the same "wm size" command to reduce the display width to work around the rounded edges. "wm size 1300x3120" pulls the display area all the way into the flat part and eliminates the optical distortions. You could probably establish a better balance that lets it in just a little bit and probably gives the same width as the non-Pro.

Nova Launcher was crashing for me but it seemed to be a clock widget I had previously and it wasn't displaying it.
I deleted the widget and rebooted the phone and it has been perfect since and all day today.
My screen now looks like my 3XL only longer, faster, smoother
I can't find a was to Turn off Always on Display. Ist ist me, or isn't there an option?
Thanks for the tip on Nova, might rebuild my screen from scratch with it too ID the issue. The pixel launcher without some custom apps and grid sizes is a bit of a jarring experience. Search at the bottom is all wrong too.

Have you gotten the small 70 MB Android update yet? Mine was buggy with Nova Launcher Prime, in particular, but after the update, all good.
I like the fingerprint reader better than the ultrasonic in my Note 10+. It's working much better and faster for me so far. Here's hoping that stays true.

Question Can you restore original punch hole/status bar size?

Hello,
I'm struggling to find any info on this and I'm surprised nobody is really talking about it, but seemingly every AOSP ROM today has a punch hole that is larger than the one on original Global MIUI, at least back when I used it, pre-November.
Is there a way to revert to the original values, where the punch hole is not larger than the actual hole on the screen (I know often AOSP hole is jaggier/aliased than on original, but I don't mind that) and the status bar is flush with the bottom of the hardware punch hole? As it is now, the punch hole is larger and the status bar extends way past the bottom of the software defined hole anyway. If you want to see the original values (at least on the ROMs I've tried), try going to Developer options and under Display Cutout select Waterfall Cutout - this will give you the original punch hole size and status bar height, but it will put black bars on the side that make the phone near unusable.
There is a Magisk module called NoneDisplayCutout that will also make the punch hole size shrink to the original, but it messes with the status bar height and it becomes like 3x the size of the original one for some reason.
Is there a way to revert to the old values or change these values somehow? With this and the arbitrary locking of the SD870 to 1800/2250/2750 instead of its full power, I am thinking of just going back to MIUI 12.5 at this point (also can't believe more people aren't talking about how Xiaomi just locked their processors down without any notice or option to revert - even Apple users were against their old phones being locked down, and this one is almost brand new)
I was getting crazy too to snapdragon 870 locked at lower max frequency I solved the problem flashing a Magisk module from a telegram channel @ThermalAlioth look for the most appropriate zip for what u want to achieve (max freq or battery)
