I agree. This 30 pin connector, proprietary charging, no HDMI, coupled with no JB 4.2 so no miracast, this is one disconnected, connected, wired and shackled but supposedly mobile device.
I've only had it for three weeks and I miss a more connected, but liberated device.
It's frustrating cause this could be soooooo good.

Hdmi....would never use it....what to shackle it up to my tv? Pretty sure micro USB is not feasible for 2 amp charging. This baby already is soooooo good.

my playbook, and my note 2 use 2 amp chargers. I just lucked or on the 30 pin connector because I had a mini usb to 30 pin connector for my tab 2 7.0, and an extra cable.
The tf300 was a dream to type on with the dock, but honestly, my note 10.1 kicks the crap out of it. The oem cover works great, with the exception of a lot of e's that come out 3.

I had no idea that this was happening.
It would be awesome if Samsung could come up with a transformer-esque type of keyboard/cover, or even a touch-cover like the Surface.
It makes the idea of a "Note netbook/laptop" a good one, but with two separated accessories i.e. stand + bluetooth keyboard, that idea is gone.

The tablet must be a tablet, not a computer if you want a computer buy it separately. A tablet is made for commands through touchscreen, if you want to have a tablet with dock keyboard buy a tablet-pc ( i own one..)

Eh? I can find the Samsung connector (which is actually a standard called "PDMI") just about anywhere (at least in the States), I've got more charger options now than i had with my Moto Xoom, especially if you buy one of these. HDMI and AllShare Cast work on my device, too.
I've used 4.2 and we're not really missing much useful save the multi-user feature.
I have 4 BT Keyboards, including one with a built-in stick mouse and a cover that folks to make a stand; the combo (which is light enough I carry it around in a case with my Note) gives me everything I could get with the KB dock except maybe charging and it's apparently more portable as well.
I'd say we're pretty well-connected

seriously though, the battery life on the note 10 is pretty good, I would like the extra peripherals, like the full size sd and usb ports on the transformer docks.

This. I've been able to travel with only my tablet (on certain business trips even) and have most of what i'd needed to do be accessible that way.
I went to verizon yesterday & saw a Samsung branded Keyboard dock for the Tab10.1. I tried it with the display model Tab 2 10.1 & it fit. I thought that the Tab 210.1 & the Note 10.1 were the same size. I was gutted to find it was not. It works if you pull out the plastic guide/holder, but then it is kind of flimsy in there. Bummer.
Wasnt there a rumor somewhere that one of Samsungs next tablets was going to be transformer-esque? I could have sworn I read something a few months ago about it.

Well, with the GNote 10.1 LTE coming to VZ soon, I'd expect they'd be getting accessories there, too (and likely to be hugely overpriced), so I'd come back again a little while after the GNote's available in VZ stores.
Tempted to grab one off ebay. What can I say, sometimes I get typity.

That sounds sort of narrow-minded in my opinion. Why can't a tablet be both or why can't a computer be a tablet? For an artist like me, I would love the opportunity if tablets got powerful enough to rival their notebook counterparts and offered a desktop view as well as for easy access with a keyboard and trackpad.
With the move of ultrabooks , especially the Surface Pro, converging into tablet territory with full features, one must consider that to be a blessing than a curse. Think about it in this way: Would you carry a radio, cd player , portable DVD player with TV, game system and an ereader just to be able to use them, or would you opt for the simpler solution of an all in one deal? That is the number one reason why the iPod took off: portability. Not only can you get a radio, but a music player and now video, games and reading.
It gets roughly cumbersome to carry every single CD, DVD ,game cart/disc in addition to the hardware , let alone the books for brief reading in commutes in comparison to an all out deal.
For the average consumer and artist, such things are so hard to get that it is pushed towards the rich ,but now similar tech now exists that has the potential to allow for maximal power and capability and the ability to change form factors on the fly. Why should people have to be inconvenienced to buying several different products that can be brought under one device when it can be deducted into one singular product that is amazing and does it all , broadly speaking?
If we went by this flawed logic an mp3 player must play music only, but no radio , thus how would iPods and whatnot be popular if they didn't serve multiple functions simply?

Thanks.....I think. Glad to hear about the PDMI. Just have to figure out how to use it.
What I was trying too say is everything is an add on so my kit ends up being as bulky as my ultrabook and far more prone to losing some piece that makes the whole thing work. my last tablet logged about 100k+/- frequent flyer miles. Using one power brick with one power end, one multi headed usb, one multi headed hdmi, one universal battery charger brick fit neatly in an airplane amenity bag, and served two cameras, one phone and a tablet. Needed no OTG cable to get the CF card reader seen by the tablet. Because I have a GNex, I already have a data/sync switch on my usb cable.
The cameras are the hardest and heaviest to carry.
So far, I've had to add another amenity kit to add the adapters for the Note. And I still don't have a way of using it to run a projector or tv. My phone ends up doing that.

Performance-wise the N7v2 should be more fluid and snappier since it has more processing power and pushes half the pixels, but I doubt the daily difference would be THAT big. So it's a screen question. If you're tired of the extra weight and often find yourself rather leaving the N10 at home, the N7 is a no brainer, cause it's an excellent portable device, and wireless charging comes handy. If you are a multimedia man and like reading comfortable, 10" is still a better option, and the N10 is still awesome. Of course if you can sell the N10 at a good price, you can get a beefier N7, Chromecast, a Qi charger or two and HDMI cable, so the N7v2 is the better bang for the buck for sure.

Only you can decide what's the best for you. Try any 7"-er to see if the screen size suits your needs, the N7v2 will deliver N10-like sharpness to that size. Personally I wouldn't necessarily change If I had a fluid, long lasting 10"-er, but I don't, so I'll get the budget N7v2.

Have both... 7 inch is good for portability but 10 inch tablet is good for home use.

Or, you can wait for the 2013 Nexus 10 before making up your mind. If it has the recently announced Exynos Octa 5420 it'll blow away the 2013 N7 performance at a higher resolution and may come with 3GB DRAM.
Ok, so this is a really silly idea, is there a way to use my Note 10.1 as a secondary monitor from my graphics card? I'm using an ASUS MARS 760 with a DVI converter and was wondering if it was possible to plug it into the HDMI to MiniUSB on my note and use the note as a 2560X1600 Display. The main reason is so that I can have a 299 DPI while playing Watchdogs/Skyrim. The Operating system of the display computer is Window 8.1 SP1
A further question is, while using this set up is there a way to use the Speakers, Wacom pressure touchscreen and the front camera built into the note as well? Essentially making this thing a hybrid of a Ciniq and an all in one monitor and an intended touch screen for Windows 8.1. The graphics card also has a Mini Displayport output.

So an update:
TwoMon and iDisplay work great as a second monitor if you're using the graphics from the processor via usb, so games that are meant to work with intel graphics go without much of a hitch (save for the 40FPS of the programs... but I don't know much about modding apk files. Let alone screen refresh rates). So far no go with the graphics card. I still haven't figured out if there's a way to get a tablet to accept input via an HML cable. Does anyone know if this is possible? Or am I just wasting my time on a futile effort?
MHL etc on Tablets and Phones is strictly for output. Which is a shame, as using it for such things could be cool.

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to do, but I've been thinking about using my tablet as a second screen or remote display for Win8. I plan to get Microsoft's Remote Desktop for Android, but need to get the 8.1 Pro upgrade to make it work. I might also try JUMP Desktop, which also requires 8.1 Pro, and has full touchscreen support, making it just like using a Win 8.1 tablet, but remotely. I have a good university network so it should work well from all over campus. I'm just hoping I can get the full resolution and can do it headless with just a desktop with no monitor and my old GTS 450 in it. Almost definitely not good enough lag-wise for gaming though.

How about just running a remote desktop like Splashtop and using it like a windows tablet.
Try and get the fastest wireless connection you can setup and it should work pretty reasonably fast as a remote desktop.

I need it to be wired. Doing gaming via wireless is really laggy. Basically I'm trying to use my tablet as a 1600p monitor for gaming. Wireless would cause too much latency. I'll look into JUMP desktop and Remote desktop to see if the pressure sensitivity can work for drawing.

You do realize that when your as far away from your monitor as you should be, that dpi is pointless? Its the same reason why only really huge tvs need 4k.

Wired. I want to take the output of my graphics card and put it into the 10" screen. While playing across a range would be sweet, there's only a few devices that Iknow that can do that wirelessly, and that's because they have TEGRA 4 chips but they don't have high enough resolution. Doing a wired connection means that the tablet doesn't die from power drain and has direct reception from the graphics card.

Yes, I do realize. I have eyes. However, your questions don't really help. I'm trying to get the output of a graphics card and use my tablet as the monitor. IT's not a matter of pointless DPI, it's a matter of using a table as a display for high end graphics.
The reason for the 10 inch real estate is to cut down on space as well as the effect of tunnel vision. Having 2560x1600 pixels in a smaller real estate enables me to see everything on screen in one view instead of having to shift my gaze momentairly to glance the corners.
I used to think that too. But I saw data on what DPI humans could perceive at a given distance. It's definitely way higher than I thought at 1-2 feet. We still have a ways to go past 300 DPI, regardless of what Apple might say about Retina.

As far as I know, there is no native solution to make the tablet act like a regular display that accepts input, you could try taking it apart and hack something together I suppose. To the best of my knowledge, sitting the recommended distance from 27 inch monitor let's you see all of it in one view easily. Basically unless you really just want to have a tiny tablet monitor for the sake of having it, there really isn't a reason. I could definitely get behind having a cheapo wacom slate tho lol.

Well it's been a while. I manged to get the tablet to work up to 40 frames using the USB to Micro cable However this is using a third party app and it's laggy as all heck when it comes to gaming (Display wise it is pretty, so movies are a go-go). It does however work great for non intensive things like Office or internet browsing.
I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to create a driver that will enable me to have it preform the way I want (by reversing the input of the HDMI to Micro USB)

The upcoming Tab S3 is the first tablet that I've seen that seems like it would be a good replacement / upgrade for the Note 10.1 2014.
Here are some PROs and CONs as I see it:
PRO:
- battery life
- processor
- "HDR"
- USB-C
- Fingerprint Sensor
- Low weight
- look / feel
- magnetic keyboard option
- 4096 levels pressure sensitivity
- larger rubberized s-pen
CON:
- portrait button orientation
- price
- pen does not fit inside tablet
- pen doesn't have eraser (not important for most, but leaves me using old pens that don't take advantage of the heightened pressure sensitivity)
- Big one: early reviews suggest s-pen input lag
The main con for me is really that custom ROMs have made my Note snappy enough that I don't feel like I really need to upgrade (aside from my aging battery life). With 7.1.1 ROMS (currently on LiquidDeath, but Lineage is great, too) I finally don't get s-pen lag when drawing or writing and would be frustrated to have to deal with that again.
I don't think I can justify the expense right now, but if I had the cash this would seem like a solid choice. Opinions?
I agree with everything you've listed.
I was a bit worried about losing screen size so I calculated some stuff.
Note: 8.6 x 5.4in - 46.44 sq in
Tab: 7.8 x 5.8in - 45.24 sq in
The tab loses a bit of length but gains it back in width. Not going to be as big for widescreen movies and such but hopefully not too bad.
I'm also not a fan of the reduced PPI but I'm going to Best Buy sometime to compare.
The pen not fitting inside is a big issue since it's easy for me to lose them (and the replacement is $60). I would probably put something on its belt clip to keep it attached to me.
However, the pen's gained size may feel nicer in the hand and make it more difficult to lose.
We'll get ROMs eventually. Except if the bootloader is tied down like on the S7 (is it?)
IMO it has 3 big cons not listed here.
Aspect ratio. It's bad for for android. Most iOS apps are optimized for 4:3, so it's a good fit for iPad. Most android apps actually look bad on 4:3 (used Mi tab, apps didn't look good). 4:3 is bad for media consumption. Websites are optimized for widescreen.
Lack of MHL is a big con for me too. I frequently use my tablet as my portable computer (booting linux) or portable media center. I don't find wireless a good alternative (things like chromecast), too much input lag and requires live Internet connection most of the times.
The smaller battery. Sure Note 10.1 has a more power hungry screen and SoC but the difference in battery capacity is so great that with a power efficient rom you always get better autonomy with Note 10.1

Does it not support DisplayPort over USB-C? If not, on Reddit there is a guy with a solution that works for the pixel, which also doesn't support DP over USB-C and that may work. Can't post the link since I'm still new but you can google "google pixel is wired output possible" to find the post.
Went to Best Buy recently and tried it. Couldn't do much since it was locked in demo mode (so I couldn't see how badly apps handle the 4:3 screen) but it seemed like a nice device.
Have you guys seen the Chromebook Plus/Pro? It's a Samsung Chromebook with an Spen, Android app support, and it folds into a tablet. It supports DP over USB-C. Downside is no button on pen. I think only S8 supports video output over usb C at this point. Display output over usb 3 (as per the reddit page) is buggy at best. Tried it to one of my laptops, it's good for quick work, I wouldn't trust it for real work.
Chrome book plus is better for work. But an ultrabook is even better.
It's very bad as a tablet though. I've found out that the further away we are from 500 grams / 1 lbr mark the less people use the said device as a tablet. There is a reason , most books do not weigh more than 1lbr for easier reading. A tablet plays a similar role, the heavier it is the more unusable. Note 10.1 2014 is on the heavy side (would prefer if it had 100 less grams) but still very usable. 1KG tablet/laptops are not though. You may make the occasional tablet use, but no way you get it in the couch for media viewing or reading, or on a trip as a handheld, pretty much why the 2in1 idea never flew (people find that they don't use them as tablets so prefer to go the ultrabook route all the way).
I'll cut right to the chase. I don't have a Tab to test this out with, so figure it's to the Interwebz.
So you can link a Note to a Windows 10 laptop with the usb-c cable, you can link a Note to a tv with an hdmi cable, you can link a Tab S6 to a Windows 10 laptop with the usb-c cable and you can link a Tab S6 to a tv with an hdmi cable.
But, can you link a Note 10+ directly to a Tab S6 and treat the tab as the connected display?
I have looked and looked and found no details that say it is supported, but also have not found anyone attempting this. If a Tab could be treated as a portable Smart display, I would be so so so happy.

I'll cut right to the chase. I don't have a Tab to test this out with, so figure it's to the Interwebz.
So you can link a Note to a Windows 10 laptop with the usb-c cable, you can link a Note to a tv with an hdmi cable, you can link a Tab S6 to a Windows 10 laptop with the usb-c cable and you can link a Tab S6 to a tv with an hdmi cable.
But, can you link a Note 10+ directly to a Tab S6 and treat the tab as the connected display?
I have looked and looked and found no details that say it is supported, but also have not found anyone attempting this. If a Tab could be treated as a portable Smart display, I would be so so so happy.

DeX will not work due to lack of an app on the Tablet.

But there are TVs with HDMI functionality that were manufactured far before DeX was even a thought and it works...

If you are talking about HDMI-in on the tablet, then it doesn't have that capability either because the USB-C port does not take display input. The only possible way to broadcast a screen on the tablet is to use Samsung's SmartView functionality which allows you to share screen between Samsung device. However, that app is finicky and I have not have success with my Tab S4.

Firstly,
I don't have a Tab S6 but older Tab A (2016)
I do have a Note 10 +
I have installed Samsung Flow which incorporates Smart View.
I can connect wifi direct method or Bluetooth from
my Tab A to Note 10 +
No issues, overall.
Connects every time.
Yes, it's a little bit "laggy" but quite acceptable for my use.!
I can control my Note 10 + from my Tab A (mirror)

i can receive notifications from outside, intended for Note 10 +
View them on my tab.
My notifications on Note 10 +,
is set to a notification bubble.
I can tap on the bubble on my Tab and view notifications.
I can answer calls etc for Note 10 +
via tab.
Further you can automatically dim your Note10 via Smart View.
To use tab you slide brightness up via tab etc
To save battery on "dormant" device.
I can pick my Note 10 up and carry on where i left off. etc
Whilst, I'm typing this post note it's mirrors every word on Tab.
I have put my Note 10 down and carry on typing this "note from my Tab.
There is a very slight lag but quite acceptable.
I Use the Wifi direct input rather than Bluetooth.

Thanks for your replies.
So it is probably apparent that I have a few use cases in mind for my question.
For the example, I'm specifically referencing 4 devices: Note 10+, 17.3" Windows 10 Laptop, Xbox One S, and a "theoretical Future version of the Tab S".
1) I am a professional software developer and I hate working from a single monitor. My workstation drives 5 displays (counting my open laptop) and being without a mobile monitor means that I am always tethered to my workstation to do work. The portability of Galaxy devices doesn't really help me get work done atthe moment. It just makes it easier to "carry my stuff" endpoint to endpoint. I need a portable second monitor to be able to do work wherever I am and realistically, if the flagship devices were to become upgraded to support DP-Alt as a default feature, I could use DisplayPort's native daisy chaining feature to hypothetically drive multiple external displays. At the point I can cable my Note to two Tabs via DP-Alt and have 2 external displays, my Note (whatever future iteration would add support for this) would become my primary personal computer rather than my ultrabook. But the starting poijt towards that goal would be to upgrade the Tab for receiving DisplayPort-Alt input
2) I am building a vehicle and want to build in a couple of XBox Ones into the backseat for my children, but I don't want to install permanent, single purpose displays into the vehicle. The displays need to be portable. Miracast is far too slow for gaming (old, deprecated fallback casting protocol)
3) The screen on my Note 10+ is amazing, but when I'm wanting to watch a video in bed, I always find myself wanting a larger, higher quality screen. I will never permanently install a television in my bedroom, so I need this screen to be portable. (Miracast is ok for this because video is non-interactive)
4) I run multiple gaming systems directly on my phone and when I want to play a multiplayer SNES game, I really want to be able to display it on a screen large enough that we can both view comfortably. I don't want to run these games from a tablet. I just want to take advantage of its larger, higher quality display.
5) I carry my Note 10+ everywhere and sometimes I want to work with it on a larger screen but I don't want to carry my laptop with me. (Miracast is suboptimal. The delay is not terrible, but I want no delay)
Essentially, if the Tab can receive DisplayPort over USB-C (known by VESA as Display Port Alt-Mode) then it is immediately upgraded to be the only portable monitor on the market with a sAMOLED display, it could be natively treated by a DeX enabled smartphone as an external display (and therefore a Note would be able to natively DeX with a Tab), and a Windows laptop or Surface Pro would be able to treat it as an extended display so mobile productivity would more closely resemble a multi-monitor workstation setup.
Samsung does not currently have a product offering in the "portable usb-c monitor" market segment and -on some fairly extensive research- there are zero portable usb-c monitors available with an AMOLED display. The highest quality ones available are IPS and they are in the $300-400 range for non-touch and $400-500 range for touch enabled displays. But none of them have any ability to be used for anything other than as a dumb display.
If the Tab were extended with this capability, it immediately becomes the exact device that Samsung has been missing in the middle of its "Galaxy for Business" strategy and it becomes a perfect portable companion to Windows portable devices.
So, I'm very intrigued by any possibility for this to come in the near future.
I mean....*why not*? It seems to make so much sense to me as the killer feature that solidifies the Samsung+Microsoft partnership.

This is consistent with my expectations. I spoke with Samsung Technical Support on an unrelated issue (Data Usage is 3x the app data math on my Note since the One UI 2.0 Update) and took the time to ask a couple of targetted questions about this support being currently available or available in the near future.
The tech communicated to me that they are working with pre-release devices in the Samsung building and that there are multiple combinations of devices that "just work" with a USB-C cable (probably TB or USB 3.2 Gen2x2) without the reliance on Miracast, but he had zero insight into the specifics of any future Tab model.
Either HDMI-Alt or DisplayPort-Alt would be fine for my purposes. I'd personally prefer it to work with DP-Alt but HDMI is more ubiquitous so there would be more mileage for this hypothetical feature.
