Using a USB dac with the Samsung A70 - Samsung Galaxy A70 Questions & Answers

Has anyone managed to get a USB dac working without using UAP pro?
I have a Hidizs S3 that works perfectly through UAP pro, unfortunately my current music streaming service (Amazon music HD) isn't supported by UAP.
If I use the dac without going through UAP it is just used as a dumb extension cable and the dac isn't used.
Many thanks for any suggestions.

I tried, but sound quality is just not good without UAP.
I am rooted with Viper4Android

Thanks, stupidly I upgraded to this phone thinking it would be a step up in sound quality. It wasn't. So I bought a USB dac. That doesn't work properly ?

[Q] USB Audio Out?

Can anyone who owns the G3 confirm that USB Audio Out (over an OTG cable) works through a DAC? I can't seem to find any information that confirms or discounts that this works.
Thanks!

It does work with my Fiio E17. Just tried it today after almost buying an app that was supposed to do so. My only complaint is that the DAC seems to be charging while connected to the G3.

Thanks, Jesadac! That's great news... I was hoping this was the case, as I believe the G2 also supported it.
I assume you're referring to the USB Audio Player Pro app? It truly doesn't replace the native ability to have a clean digital audio out signal for all sounds out of the phone.
I have the Fiio E18 and a friend has the VZW G3. We just tested the combo and it seems to work fine.

Just bought the new Cayin C5 DAC/Amp. My TMo LG G3 does not put audio out though the amp when connected via OTG. It registers it's connected I'm guessing because all audio is no longer played through the phone. Plugged into my friends Note 4 and it worked right away. Is this is G3 problem? We're both on Lollipop.
I know this is an old thread... but do I still need USB Audio Player Pro to get USB DAC to work? I thought Android 5.0+ brings USB audio, and right now my Beyerdynamic A100 doesn't work by "simply" plugging it in... however I do get about half second of audio and quits.
I go on LG G3 with app USB Audio Player PRO and HibyMusic app, my DAC is Hegel HD2 and DragonFly RED. Logitech USB headphones works too. with China OTG cable.
I can confirm Spotify and youtube doesn't play audio through usb (android 5.1.1), and it still mutes integrated speaker when connected:silly:. Must have usb-player i guess.

External DACs and the OPO: Which Work Best?

Here's a list of DACs reportedly working with the OPO:
The Audioquest Dragonfly works with USB Audio Recorder/Player Pro (as long as Tweak 1 is installed, according to chazman1117)
The FiiO E07k, according to this OnePlus One Forums member.
The Fiio E10 actually works with "an OTG cable and no external power," as reported by benoitb and confirmed by me! The E10 doesn't require UAPP/UARP to work; it receives signal from every audio player I've used, and EQ utilities also have a direct effect.
But since I've read that using an unpowered USB DAC with an unpowering source can damage said source, I don't think I'll be making a habit of using an E10 with my OPO -- especially in light of this week's exploding battery fiasco.
The FiiO E17 works well with the CyanHacker ROM and possibly stock CM as well (according to sandels' findings)
The FiiO E18 (confirmations appear here and here, though it's a tad unclear whether the latter poster's talking about an OPO or a "graveyarded" Nexus 5)
The FiiO E7 is working with the OPO, according to Head-fi's Cattlethief.
The Apex Glacier DAC, Poimandres of Head-fi assures us, not only works quite well with the CM's 38r 24/192-ready update but "streams USB audio from Neutron divinely." (Apex wants you to know that the Glacier uses a "bipolar power supply" -- best to listen to demanding headphones when it's not in the manic phase, apparently!)
The HiFiMeDIY TinyDAC works with KitKat but not Android L, reportedly; I know from personal experience that it works with an OPO running CM11 stock.
The HRT Music Streamer II is working with the OPO, according to Head-fi's Cattlethief.
The iFi Nano iDSD is reportedly working with the OPO according to this post by Head-fi member cattlethief.
The NuForce uDAC-2 is reportedly working with the OPO according to this post on Head-Fi (to which DanBa was kind enough to drop in and link).
The Rega DAC works with the OPO without any issues according to mapin0518, who used it with Google Play Music and this Micro USB to USB OTG Adapter.
The Sony PHA-1, according to this Head-fi member.
The Stoner Acoustics UD120 DAC is working with the OPO, according to Head-fi's Cattlethief -- though only with UAPP.
The Vamp Verza works with stock music players as well as UAPP/UARP according to chazmann1117's findings. Update: Chazmann now reports that, "when using the settings required by the DAC for an android phone," there is "barely audible" noise. The noise goes away if you switch to "apple mode" on the Verza, but that makes the battery drain far more quickly.
The YuLong U100 works a treat with the OPO, according to mrruin.
(I recall reading that the JDS Labs C5D also works with the OPO, but I'm still looking for concrete verification.)

History
Most people who are interested in using external DACs with Android phones have been following DanBa's Android DAC thread on Head-fi for the past few years.
DanBa is focused on DAC compatibility with mainstream devices by Samsung and Nexus because the former has been the most popular maker of Android phones and the latter is Google's intersection with chosen hardware companies. Samsung and Nexus devices, DanBa reasons, will affect Google's implementation of USB audio most directly and so are most deserving of his time.
That's why it's unlikely he'll create a list of DACs that work with the OnePlus One.
It's also why I thought we might create one ourselves.
I have a Fiio E17 and it's working. I've had a couple issues with the apps crashing but I've only just started testing so I'll update when I know more. Plays both MP3 and FLAC fine.
I'm running CyanHacker ROM.
OnePlus One > USB OTG adaptor > USB cable > Fiio E17 > Earphones > Ears
After more days of listening I can confirm that Fiio E17 works great with the OPO. I suspect the first few crashes were ROM related. Let me know if you have any questions and I can test stuff.
I have the OPO and can conform that the Audioquest Dragonfly and the FiiO E-7 work fine, although I had to enable USB tweak 1 in the USB Audio Player Pro as I would randomly lose sync with the DAC.
I will update this post later today as I will have the opportunity to test the V-Moda Vamp Verza.
I would appreciate feedback on DACs without using UAPP since the app brings its own driver interface to communicate with DACs. Outside the app DACs quickly loose the ability to work with various phones.
So if you have a DAC and a OPO phone, please give feedback without using UAPP and see if it works with a standard music player. Thanks!
My Yulong U100 works, but it is not a portable or widely available DAC.

I haven't used or installed UAPP at all. Apps I've used are Apollo, Soundcloud, Youtube, Chrome, and various games. System sounds and the like are all fine as well. As far as I'm can tell the E17 + OPO works with anything and everything.

1. Then again, perhaps other people might like to know which DACs work with the OPO in whatever capacity -- with UARP or without. Anyone who's gracious enough to test their DAC with their setup and report their findings here has my gratitude whether or not they have to use UARP -- yourself included. (I believe the Dragonfly does require UARP, hence chazman's specific feedback, if I understood him correctly.)
No need to limit the scope of this thread to the setup you desire. Your interests will still be covered.
2. It sounds as though your Yulong U100 works without UARP, since you didn't mention using it and are interested specifically in avoiding it, correct?

Generally from what I have seen almost any DAC with standard USB interface will work with UAPP. They really did a good job with that app and its driver interface, no doubt. But it is also no native support, there is an interface layer in between.
What would be perfect is that everyone who tries to use their DAC with their phone not only tries UAPP but also "normal" operation. Too often that information is missing. However if a DAC works without UAPP it will work with Ultimate Audio Player Pro as well.
So in my case the U100 works systemwide, with any audio/video app I tried. Stock and CM based roms.

It isn't always true that any USB DAC will work with UARP. The success is very much dependent on the player and the DAC. Another factor is power, of course. If, for example, a USB DAC intended to be powered by the computer for which it was designed (cf. the Dragonfly) only worked with the OPO when an external powered hub was added, I'd want to know that as well.

Just did a search for "Ultimate Audio Player Pro" on the playstore and found nothing. Are you certain you don't mean USB Audio Recorder Pro?
Also: When people say that a DAC works with USB Audio Recorder Pro, I believe they're trying to say that it doesn't work without UARP. The convenient shorthand for them might be to add the word only:
"Schiit-on-a-Wheel Audio's Nordic Conquest DAC works with CM OS and the stock music app, but Megathrum's MeagerDAC works only with UARP and revision 340.2(c) of the ThermalCup ROM."
that's the one

it is "USB" not "Ultimate" Audio Player Pro. Same developer.

Got it: You meant to type USB but typed Ultimate -- perhaps because it turns out you're not alone.
I point this out not to be a vast hulking dink but because (1) there's an app called "Ultimate Audio Player," which people might mistakenly download instead, and (2) I googled the name "Ultimate Audio Recorder Pro" and found threads like this one, in which Head-fi members used the incorrect name for the app -- and one of them happens to be NZtechfreak -- a dedicated cataloger of USB DACs.
Note, too, that user phi303 had the same experience I did: S/he looked for Ultimate Audio Player Pro on the Playstore and found nothing. It's interesting that that's happened more than twice.
For the above reasons, I think it's worthwhile for people to know we're talking about USB Audio Player Pro sans the word Ultimate. Since I wasn't familiar with that UARP offshoot until you made me aware of it, I wouldn't expect every DAC user to know it either -- not automatically, at least.
Both UARP and UAPP use drivers that bypass the limitations of source software, which is why I suspected they had to be the same software with an incorrect initialism or variants of the same original software.

Update--
After extensive listening I had to return the V-Moda Vamp Versa DAC. When using the settings required by the DAC for an android phone there is audible (barely) noise. If you change the settings to apple mode - the noise goes away, but the battery drains extremely quick. No Bueno.

Compatible USB DAC/Amp?

Hi, I've found that the headphone output of this phone, while good for some headphones, has too much noise for sensitive IEMs and not enough power for some less efficient headphones, so I'm looking into a portable DAC/Amp. I tried this one with a USB-C adapter:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FJSEAZ4
But it didn't work. I know the USB-C adapter works, as I've used it with a thumb drive, and I know the DAC works on other Android devices, but apparently compatibility isn't universal. So has anyone successfully tried a portable DAC with this phone?
My Fiio Q1 works fine with the phone.

Thanks, that's good to hear. I was considering one of Fiio's products
I tried this one: http://hifimediy.com/android-dac
Works very well together with an USB B to C converter that supports USB OTG and drove even my good old 600 Ohm AKG K 141 loud enough!
It has a Sabre DAC. Bought it out of concern that the sound of the phone might not be good enough. But it is - at least with low impedance headphones like my Ultimate Ears UE 10 TF I don't find a difference to the 180 $ sony walkman of my GF.
(Small remark: Used a Samsung USB B to C converter first. This one, while doing very well on the PC and with ADB and also with the charger did not work as OTG adaptor.)

For sure. It works for me without problems - plug and play.
I use this adaptor: http://www.delock.com/produkte/G_65678/merkmale.html
Side note: While I could use the Samsung adaptor for charging (but not for OTG devices) this one works well for OTG - but not for charging.
Edit: The price for te DAC on the amazon side is way higher than if you buy directly from the Hifimediy website.
And you should also note, that this DAC while it's pretty good for higher impedance phones did not work well with my low (32 ohm) impedance IEM's. But for those I found no need to use the DAC.
I ended up with a Fiio E18, I like the fact that it has playback control, plus B&H has it on sale right now. It doesn't seem to work with Poweramp, but it works perfectly with USB Audio Player PRO.

it should work fine with any phone as it uses the digital audio out pins of usb-c. its decently priced and much louder than most. i found a cheap LG G5 hi fi sound module that is also brilliant.

External DAC

Hi Guys,
Let's talk about the external DAC.
Afordable, or not...
I don't want to use wireless solution for several reason but this is not the point here.
My favorite :
Ibasso DC01
Unfirtunatielly not compatible with Samsung Galaxy devices. Wiring of the USB-C connector is not fully respected by Samsung.
Some says that it will work on some European devices (Exynos).
It will be soon available as unbalanced under reference ibasso DC02.
Same issue ?
Sonata HD cable II

I've read everything and anything on this one. I don't know what to think about it. More over it's unbalanced.

I have the Ibasso DAC and will be disappointed if this will not work with the Note 10. I have the Sonata and the Cozoy as well so will be trying them on the N10+ too. I prefer to use the iBasso for the Balanced connection. Does this mean it doesn't work with the Note9? My wife has this phone. I will try the Ibasso on that tonight.

I just tried the Ibasso DC-01 with my wife's Note9 (Qualcomm CPU). I have used it with PowerAmp and Tidal and it seems to be working fine.
Can I clarify that the Ibasso has not been working with Samsung phones or just with the Note 10?
I have ordered the Note 10+, but have assumed that the Ibasso will work with the N10+ as well.

It seems that they have issue with S9 S10 N9 and N10.
Not all devices are impacted.
See attachment.
Regarding ibasso, a French test website said to have had the problem with 50% of devices. Including S9 S10 and Note9.
Samsun was able to solve the problem via software for other DACs, but they can not do it for ibasso.
This French website advice to test the ibasso before buying.

I came across this usb dac by Dunu at a hifi show recently. Looks similar to the Ibasso, but was unbalanced. I did not catch the model number. I think it will be released soon as well

Few months ago I purchased TempoTec Sonata HD Hi-Res dongle from Amazon and actually was the first person to review them. Basically it is the same as Hidizs, just re-branded. Actually Hidizs was selling the TempoTec dongle. I asked them what is the difference between your Hidizs and TempoTec, their reply was "basically same thing..." The reason I went with TempoTec, as it was $19.99 and Hidizs that time was $29.99. Now Hidizs went over $40, not cool

Not noticed battery drain, but perhaps will see how it is tomorrow after a full charge and spend the day with it.
I have not installed any ibasso app, but have volume control with the N10.
I had to set hardware volume with UAPpro and volume works in bit perfect mode fine. Listening to Tidal with UAPpro as I type. Been great so far.
First thing first, I am not an audiophile!
Instead of paying the Type-C to 3.5mm Adapter for SS (no stock here anyway), bought the iBasso dc02
- plug and play as expected, no issue
- volume is louder, and clearer
- RHA T20
- Have not tried the iBasso UAC
Tested on:
Samsung Note10+ (Samsung Music Player)
Huawei Honor Note 10 (VLC)
Time to trash the Type C to 3.5mm adapter!
**** ...
i got the Ibasso DC02 for my note 10+ exynos and it didn't work ... audio came out from the phone speakers and the Ibasso UAC doesn't see it either ...

faulty unit? Have you tried it on other devices?
I already bought this one:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Soditer-Adapter-Headphone-Realtek-Earphone/dp/B07MHH14M5
Planning on getting Note 10 at some point in November.
Works with Samsung
Just need to restart phone with DAC connected. I am jealous of the people who got it to work. Mine doesn't auto detect the DAC. But if I connect it and restart the Note 10 sees it just fine.
I had an email about the following the other day and maybe of interest:
ZuperDAC-S: True Portable HiFi USB-DAC.
I would not normally depends on the phone music because most of the mobile phones now are designed to work in games and movies or other type of entertainment except audio. If you like quality music try to use Chord Mojo, Chord Hugo or Other external DAC. I would prepare to buy a separate music player if you love music instead of depending on mobile phones. There are many decent Music player in the market that you can buy, if you like there are quality Astell and Kern Products like SR15 A&norma it just 799 USD and I heard there a sale on other stores like Amazon. If you cannot afford it try buying Fiio like X1 or X3 its cheaper but good quality music as compared with mobile phones. Another advantage is the battery of your phone won't worn out easily because you don't need to charge it from time to time.
Doesn't work
My dc02 doesn't work on oneplus 7 android 10 and huawei 6x my app is uapp and hiby
It work for Arround 1minute and then it make some noise
When i replug the dac it play music Arround 1 minute again
This works out of the box dedicated headphone jack, and up to 7.1 surround when used in VLC and Kodi. ?

Solution to USB-C Woes
Guys do not fret. There are two workarounds that I've discovered. One of them which is the recent more permanent one relied on talking to the right person at the right moment. Thanks to that person from Samsung Philippines.*
First, the temporary workaround was mentioned here. Keep it connected while rebooting and the system will detect it automatically.
For the permanent solution here it is:
1. Clear the USB settings of your Android device. Settings, Apps, Show System Apps, search USB Settings tap clear cache and clear data.
2. Perform a soft reset. In some phones power and volume down button.
Should now work without restarting it while it is plugged in. Tried plug and unplug multiple times. It now works!*
Hope this helps everyone! Pls post this solution on* social media.
