Double Tap to Select Text - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Questions & Answers

Alright. This is driving my nuts...
The double tap to select text has stopped working on my 975U.
Anyone has the same issue? Any way to get it back please?

Double tap? I select text by touch and hold, and then moving the handles that appear

I've been double tapping on words (on editable text) forever, dunno why it stopped working

Doesn't it vary from app to app? I still find copy/paste on Android a bit of a mess.

Nope, I tried for example the same version of WhatsApp on my gf's S10+ and the double tap worked on hers

In some apps the behavior changes. On the Firefox' adress bar you have to do it only once for example.

Recent Apps' jumplist

After reading an article from WMPU, about the back button and task switcher, i did some cut and paste job, and this is what i've made...
A lot of ppl complaint that the right black bar(the one with an arrow icon) is wasting a lot of space. The first apps' jumplist will use this space.
(1st attachment)
Another apps' jumplist, was to bring the notification bar even further. In WP7, user have to tab on the top black bar to get some information about the battery and the signal strength. The jumplist(which holding recent apps), drop together with the battery or whatever indicators.
(2nd attachment)
perhaps it looks nicer in this form:
(3rd attachment)
however, i think this will "crash" the "in call notification" or what ever it called...
What do you think? do you think such jumplist is necessary?
What I wouldn't mind seeing is basically a list sorta like the existing list when you swipe left on the home screen that pops up when you double tap the back button. Each would have a X that you could tap to nuke the app entirely or you could tap on the icon/name of the app and jump to it.

I'd have to agree - my thoughts exactly Rusty!
When you said app jumplist I thought you meant a list like the contacts list but for apps. I thought the app list would get the same functionality as the other lists, but I haven't seen that to date.
why you need a "X" while these "recent" apps are not consuming your processor?

To take them off the list, so it doesn't become cluttered, if you want to actively manage it.

Not double-tap... hold. I want 2 taps to take me back twice.
On that note I think Voice should have been mapped to holding the Search button, not the Start button. There are better uses for the Start button.
I agree with the hold back button thing.
but task/app managers are flawed slighty if you have forgot and closed or not even opened that process yet.And its then another button to your start screen to open it again.I think a long hold takes you back to the start screen and the list shows like in picture one.best of both worlds.plus you could have a nice little animation of the list sliding in from the bottom like a train.
looks pretty neat. although if those icons were a tiny bit smaller you could line up 3 of the icons with one of the big icons. you have to have stuff lined up of else people like me will go mad
I personally love this idea.

Dragging Smart Select into Upper Text Box

I just got my note today and was excited to try out the smart select feature. Unfortunately, if you try and drop what you've selected into a text box on the top of the screen, the delete option gets in the way and doesn't allow you to finish dragging. Any work around for this?

What are you trying to do exactly and what app is that?

When you hover the Spen over the screen and click the button, smart select is one of the options. You can crop an area on the screen and it will do text recognition. It then produces a floating bubble that you can drag and drop into a text field; however, once you start dragging the floating bubble, the top of the screen becomes the place to drag and delete the bubble, just like dragging an icon to delete on your home screen. So, having the delete box on the top of the screen renders the feature useless for any text field on the top of the screen.

Ah I see.
I believe you are misunderstanding how to use the smart select feature.
That icon is not text, it is a collection of selections you took. To turn a selection into text there is a little T in the corner of the selection. (It can do fun things if your selection is phone numbers, addresses etc)
If I assume correctly you were trying to use smart select in place of highlighting copy and paste into a search bar.
If this is true then you can just highlight normally hold spen button drag across text you want and a bar with options will appear one of them is a search option that will auto search the selected text.
Some apps don't support spen highlight feature ex. firefox in which case you can highlight traditionally with a tap and hold spen(or finger) on screen and it will display the selection arrows for you to select, an options bar to do the same as above will appear.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't notice that little "T" after doing the smart select. Wish I was still able to drag it in, but the copy and paste thing works too.

Does anyone know where is the "recents delay" coming from?

Hi all,
There is a noticeable delay when pressing the recents button and launching the recent apps view compared with regular AOSP, CM or any other phone. It overrides the animation speed settings.
It is present in the "regular recents" version of the HTC 10 firmware and in the "chinese sense" version, although in the chinese version it is even longer.
I'd love to remove this delay, does anyone know a way to do this? Or where could it sit in the HTC 10 source code?
Thanks

Do you have any secondary options mapped to that key using something like GravityBox? I noticed this "problem " on my phone then, I realized it was because assigned a double tap of the recent apps key to open my camera. That was causing the delay on my phone .

Good hint! I disabled "menu on long presses", now the recent apps show up a little quicker.

Oh, I do in fact have two options mapped in GravityBox. I was so quick to attribute it to HTC Sense that I didn't even consider it being an issue with something else.
Thank you very much!!!!

Is double tap to turn off screen possible

As the title suggests is it possible to double tap on empty area of Home Screen to turn the phone off just like we use Double tap to wake the phone.
This was an inbuilt feature on Asus Zenfone 5z and seems counter intutive to have only one option to turn the screen on and not off here.
Regards
One option; with Nova launcher
Yes, likely via custom ROMs.
Also, probably via custom launchers. Nova Prime allows double-tap to "lock screen". Double tap to "screen off" very likely via a specific 'Nova activities' option but I haven't figured this out yet.
EdXposed ---> install GravityBox ---> it's then possible to turn screen off via double-tap on lock screen or via double-tap on status bar.

You can use edge screen. SoftKey Edge. There is a lock option. It is not double tap but it works.
you can add the screen off icon at navigation bar with a samsung app called Navstar, with that you can single tap to turn off the screen
Good Lock - Navstar adds a navigation button to turn the screen off

I dont see any gestures for that in nova launcher?
You must have the prime license, in gestures&inputs there are multiple options to choose from, for each gesture you can choose any action available, you can even have the same action assigned to multiple gestures, I use one finger down to lock, and also double tap to lock

As i already have Nova prime, this worked perfectly. Thanks.
Nice just learned something new. Used nova star and added screen off and notification bar button. Now I have 5 buttons readily available.
Wish you could open and app with a button. That way I can reserve the power double tap for another app.

Feeling seriously numb right now. I've used Nova (Prime) for years, and never knew that was there. Searched all over for a good program to sleep/ lock. Found a very simply one (Screen Lock Widget 1.0) which is no longer available, but I have. Works great. No resources used. But having the ability in Nova is great.
So.....thank you for sharing that. It's the simple things in life.
It makes no sense why Samsung would give us the means to tap awake our screen but not add that option to turn it off.
That was a weird decision for not including double tap to sleep. It's like making an automatic car with clutch where the clutch is only used for the reverse lol.
Anyhow, this is by far the best app on the playstore that can put the phone sleep and still use the default One UI.
The nice thing about it is that you can also tap on the status bar to put the phone to sleep while using an app for instance.
Tripe tap on the home screen is recommended though, you'll understand why after using it for a while

That is very interesting, I never use always on display and it seems like the Note 10 has a lot of issues. For instance Samsung voice recorder app doesn't play recorded audios while the screen off( stops playing after 2min or so).

I just tried Nav Star app from within Good Lock (From Samsung App store) and added 2 extra buttons.
Thanks to the user who recommended it earlier, now I can turn off phone as well pullbdown notification bar from the Navigation bar, if I can get used to these extra buttons I might as well keep them.
Yes software wise they do need to improve a lot of things here.
1. First Install Good Lock :
http://apps.samsung.com/appquery/appDetail.as?appId=com.samsung.android.goodlock
2. Then Install Nav Star : http://apps.samsung.com/appquery/appDetail.as?appId=com.samsung.systemui.navillera
Well, very useful indeed, but I prefer hiding the nav bar, just to avoid screen burn in and to get some more screen area

How To Guide Open notification in a popup window

Doesn't work for me. Swiping down on notification just pulls down the notification panel. Do I have to disable the pull down notifications gesture first?
When using your phone and you receive a notification as a pop-up on your screen, you do a quick swipe down on that to launch the notification into a pop-up window
If you're trying to launch a notification from your notification pull down list.... then press and hold on the notification continuously until you get to drag it to the center of the screen to launch as a popup, or to the edges (if using an other app) to split screen the existing app with the notifying app!

Thanks but that first option doesn't work for me. Swiping down on the toast notification just brings down the notification bar. Had no effect on the active notification pop-up. I will try disabling that gesture and see if it behaves the way you describe. That would be a very helpful feature for me. Thank you.
I do have the swipe down gesture to pull the notification drawer too...
In my developer settings I have these 2 options enabled -
1. Force activities to be resizeable
2. Enable free-form windows
I think I figured your issue... you must have selected "detailed" and not "brief" as your notification style in your notification settings
