(Official Support Answer) Rooting your Oneplus 8 Series DOES NOT VOID IT'S WARRANTY - OnePlus 8 Pro Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi, I am an ex OP3 user who switched to a OP8P recently and I was going through all the forums related to OP 8 Series to find out if rooting this device will void my warranty or not (It didn't void the warranty of OP3 back in 2016 and I was curious if OP has changed their stance related to rooting). But there was no official or forum answer available for this query so I did the next best thing and I asked the official oneplus chat support. The answer was UNLOCKING YOUR BOOTLOADER or ROOTING YOUR ONEPLUS 8 SERIES DOES NOT VOID IT'S WARRANTY.
PS: Of course, if something happens to the phone hardware it will not be covered under warranty though.
PPS: I am from India, It may be different for your country

I think they meant if something happens to device HW because of rooting (like overclocking etc.) It voids warranty. I have got my display replaced and then fingerprint sensor calibrated. Both times my device was rooted (didnt bother to remove it) and they didnt care about it in a service center. I am from Finland. Actually I didnt even need a receipt to get my device serviced..

Yes I know, I too have used warranty while being rooted multiple times when I was using OP3. That not including hardware is for things like frying up your motherboard by overclocking (as you said) or flashing some unstable kernel.

this is even published on OP web page

It's there is the OnePlus website it self, this post is not required

Have rooted many OnePlus devices and it's always been able to be RMA'd, it'll be the same.
Rooting isn't actually the issue, it's usually unlocking the bootloader, but OnePlus doesn't have the same stringent warnings as other OEM's.
Much to everyone who buys one plus devices fortune.
Personally I would relock the bootloader if I was to RMA a device, unless it was a brick in which case it doesn't matter.

HTC announced NO MORE to LOCKING BOOTLOADER

For those that didn't get the news...
http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/26/htc-officially-dissolves-locked-bootlader-policy/
http://www.facebook.com/HTC/posts/10150307320018084
They just announced that they won't be locking the bootloaders anymore... now give us a way to S-OFF our phones...
this is a really great move. i'm super excited about them doing this.
however, will they unlock the inc2 bootloader through an ota update or something? or will it only be for new phones, i really hope we get it for s-off
Yes, now if they will just make that policy retroactive...
Someone send an email to HTC asking if it will cover the dinc2. I've seen people on the EVO 3d forums receiving answers.

I have no evidence of this, but if HTC has agreed that already released hardware with locked loaders (EVO 3D) will get unlocked, my guess is all locked devices will get the same treatment.
Good question, Ted. We definately understand the concern regarding the phones with bootloaders that are currently locked. At this point in time, we don't have any information on if and how existing locked bootloaders will be unlocked. Though, once we reach a decision and plan regarding the currently locked phones, we'll definately announce this through our website, as well as Facebook & Twitter, as well. Stay tuned; we'll definately let you know, as soon as the information becomes available.
I asked and this is what they said. So I guess they don't know or don't want to tell me?

I'm a bit nervous because I received a personal email response high up from HTC (The CEO) just a few hours after I sent an email ranting about the locking down of their devices. I followed up with a question about devices that have already been shipped, and if they would be unlocked with future OTA updates.
I received no answer, so then I emailed them again asking the same question with more "detail" and still no response. I then called their North America headquarters inquiring about the same thing—nobody had an answer there either.
I hope they do the right thing—I don't have insurance on this phone, but if the policy isn't retroactive, and it is only for new devices, I'm sure I can get this thing returned due to my "special" customer service interactions.
And by "special," I mean super *****y and aggressive. LOL. This thing is riddled with bugs that you can easily use to your advantage if you want to return it, even if you don't have insurance, or if you are past the 14 day window.
Move to proper forum.

Ill bet that decision changes too. It doesn't look at all official there so we still have hope.
Yup...Tapatalk'd
I would highly recommend that rooting efforts continue. I would be (pleasantly) surprised if unlocking happens. Keep in mind that public postings from the CEO like the one on Facebook are put together by their PR, not the CEO himself, and they specially craft their comments, meaning "unlock" was not mentioned and probably won't happen.
As far as I've seen, HTC has been quite active answering questions about this except for the ones that involve currently locked devices.

I think (or at least I hope) that this means that they just haven't made that decision yet, as opposed to the possibility that they have made the decision to not unlock the bootloader but don't want to say that at this time. I think that decisions like this involving currently carrier-locked phones involve more than just HTC, and Verizon likely has a large say in the matter. (Because unlocking the bootloader is the first step to unlocking the radio which Verizon certainly doesn't want)
If I were a little more curious than I am right now, I might contact Verizon and see what they have to say about it.

BestBuy and other US store buyers - Is there an Asus Global Warranty card included?

To any US buyers who bought the tablet at any store but the Google Play... is there a Global Warranty card or paper in the package?
Asus tells me that they repair any of their product if there is such a warranty card. This could be inside the box or a piece of paper given by the store, I dunno. You guys got such a card?
I got mine from BestBuy and there is a booklet market "Warranty & Safety". Reading through it has a page titled:
10. international Warranty Service

just to back up PMentior got the same thing ... a booklet no card..
Thank you all for your help! This is promising.
If I may ask one last thing: can any of you contact Asus and ask whether your model is definitely good for Global Warranty? They say over here that they can tell the exact warranty condition based on your model's serial number, something I don't feel comfortable asking to check myself. Would much appreciate it.
I will look in to it when I get home form work.

In the meantime, if anyone has 2 minutes to check their serial with Asus (via mail or hotline), they can easily tell the device's warranty options.
Mine first Gen nexus was purchased in the usa , and fixed in europe at no extra cost.
Hope it helps.

This booklet on its first page gives serial number and an overview of how to claim warranty depending on your situation. The receipt you have for the purchase is the day when your warranty shall start. If you lost it, then Asus will use the serial code to determine when the product was made and that would be the warranty date.
I would take this as warranty.

Yes, this is how Asus does it. I'm just waiting for anyone to check their serial at ASUS and ask whether their model (= any from their store and probably from any US store) is definitely good for Global Warranty. Answer is most likely yes, but I need a confirmation before purchase, as too many are having too many issues. I may even sit this one out due to GPS issues which is a major concern of mine...
A call to Asus someone please.
bump
Heres what asus website says about the matter, date of shipping being the main word there but I am sure a print out of a receipt from a online store will suffice if no card is present. I am going to try phone them tomorow but I will be phoning the South African branch but I will report back anyway
Any luck at Asus?
I'll have one more round. Someone pls. phone Asus and ask Global Warranty status based on their serial.

Bootloader unlockers : aren't you affraid about loosing your warranty?

Hi,
I have an european H815, unlockable by the LG tool.
I really want to be rooted, but I think I will not unlock my bootloader. I don't want to lose the warranty of my brand new G4. So I'm waiting a new root method (@autoprime is at work)
It seems that i am the only person on xda thinking like this. Is it true?
What do you think about that point?

Most of us have 3rd party warranties like SquareTrade or some carrier branded warranty.
Also my carrier (Tmobile) actually does warranty exchanges for a $20 fee. As long as your phone doesn't have physical or water damage they'll honor a warranty and never look or care of a unlocked bootloader or a rooted phone.
So yeah most of us don't care about a OEM warranty.

Wow, that's pretty good! Verizon's extended-warranty deductible is $100, I believe.
Nahh I got a pretty tight one.

I have rooted every phone I've ever been able too. I have sent everyone of them in on warranty, fir one reason or another. Sometimes just because my screen was scratched. NEVER has Verizon ever said one word to me.

I still wonder if it's even legal to void warranty if you root your phone..

i am, too.
but when a team release a tool to root and to install alternative bootloader, you can relock your bootloader before to send your phone in the repair center, right?
I echo what other's have said. I have 3rd party insurance, so the lack of warranty doesn't bother me at all.
Likewise, I have only ever had one issue with a warranty repair and that was Sony who got sniffy about fixing my Z2 because of it being rooted. They sent it back for free (after some complaining) and then I claimed through my 3rd party insurance.
Job jobbed, brand new replacement, everyone was happy.
I have unlocked, rooted, and sent in Samsung, LG, AND HTC phones, often with custom Roms on them for exchange because of different reasons. Probably 10 to 15 times. NEVER NEVER NEVER have I been contacted, billed, reprimanded, etc. NEVER

It's a security feature. If you want to unlock the bootloader, you have to check that option first. Otherwise, someone could steal your phone, unlock the bootloader and have free reign. With this, they'd have to have your PIN to open the lock screen first, to get to that option.
Unfortunately, checking that option doesn't actually unlock the bootloader, only allows it to be unlocked if the manufacturer provides an unlock option.

I'm sure I heard that at least in Canada, saying "warranty is void if you do X" is meaningless, unless they can prove that doing X actually caused the problem. So if you unlocked the bootloader and then had a software issue, they might not honour the warranty, but if you had something like a faulty screen, they'd still have to fix it (but they'd probably try to weasel their way out of it).
But I might be totally wrong. I'm not a lawyer!

A month ago he returned from service after the exchange and power up the speaker key, reinstall the software service
I asked for a brief tutorial how to fix it?
I tested the Sony PC Companion but I only get an error 100 ...
Thank you so much for your help (written using Google Translator)
There are currently no found solutions to the issue yet. You have to return the device to a Sony service center (note that the warranty won't cover it).

10/20/2015 I put the phone in for service. I read somewhere that the guarantee is applicable to it. What kind of bug is it all about? Why and how did this happen?

Some users have reported that after returning their devices to a service center, they were told that warranty doesn't cover it. Users and developers went through the problem here and didn't find any solutions, but most of your questions will be answered there.
Disregard my comment on the thread. I wasn't completely aware of the problem at the time.

It's weird Whereas mobile service came recently from him ... And because Christmas tiero end of warranty so that terraces down. After returning from service the phone went a bit weird but it was not until such trouble that I reinstalled it using a Sony PC Companion
Phone came from complaints for the verdict 'corrected'
So I did not pay anything for it under warranty
"The problem was caused by hardware defect on the base plate. The defect was a removal in exchange baseplates"

I can install android on the SD card? , because the internal memory is damaged
I have the same problem.
There's no soft solution for this.
'cause it has locked the eMMc, nothing will happen if we'll do flashmode/fastboot

[Discussion] Moto G5 Plus Bootloader unlock voids warranty

Hello,
As you all know in Europe, and thus The Netherlands, bootloader unlocking doesn't void warranty due to laws. Nonetheless Lenovo's moto G5 Plus support page says that it does void warranty, but doesn't specify Europe specific rules.
So yesterday I was poking around in the warranty documents on my new moto G5 Plus, and I found some interesting things. The most interesting part is this here:
{

As you can see it contains a warning against bootloader unlocking on the International model XT1685. In the warning it states that if you unlock the bootloader, any damage caused by unlocking isn't covered. This led me into thinking that warranty for hardware defects of the phone isn't voided by the unlocking of the bootloader. I think it does mean that due to the law, and because it specifies only bootloader unlocking/rooting defects do void the warranty. What do you all think of this? Is this seen before by others? Does this only apply in the EU? Does this only apply to XT1685? Please discuss it down below. I'll keep this post updated with the latest info from Lenovo
I also posted this as a question on Lenovo's support forums (in a similar post, but differently worded etc.), because I want to hear from Lenovo themselves too, if this is posted in the wrong subforums please let a mod move this.
EDIT: Title is misleading I had a question mark in it, but it doesn't show up, if a mod can edit the title to "Bootloader unlocking possibly doesn't void warranty EU" I would be grateful.
Kind regards,
dev_freak (I rather have the name Procyon here)
Update: apparently it doesn't void warranty directly, it only will void warranty if there's a defect directly caused by unlocking. This is what a Motorola/Lenovo employee told me.
You are right: unlocking the bootloader should NOT void your warranty unless Moto/Lenovo can prove the damage to the device is related to the unlocking of the bootloader (or rooting etc).
That's the theory. A few years back I owned a Moto X, on which the WiFi broke. This less to massive battery drain and a unusable device.
I contacted the webshop I bought it from, and received details on how to return it to Motorola. A few weeks later I received it back from Motorola Repair, along with a standard form and a box checked stating the bootloader was unlocked, and therefore warranty was voided.
This led to numerous phonecalls to the seller and Motorola helpdesk, neger leasing to any result.
This ended in buying a Xiaomi, since I felt it was useless paying for a phone with European warranty when I was going to unlock and root it anyway.
My personal recommendation: if you intend to unlock the bootloader, be prepared to lose your warranty.
