No LTE data with a new Motorola G Power on Sprint MVNO - Moto G Power Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi,
I just ust got a Motorola G Power (from Amazon) to be used on a Sprint MVNO.. I have four other lines with this MVNO, all Motorola phones working well. But the Motorols G Power will register but I'm not getting LTE since the APN's are locked on this phone and you can not add new ones. You get LTE data on Sprtint proper since the phone has three default Sprint related APN's, but not on MVNO's who need their own APN pushed to the phone. I know this is a problem with other Sprint MVNO's also, not only mine. I've tried to edit, delete and add APN's, but no go. The MVNO is looking into it and Motorola is supposedly also. This happens on the E6 as well. So I have voice and SMS, but not LTE data.. As far as I can see the only option is to root or a firmware update unless someone here has another solution.

I know Boost (which is sprint) recently changed their LTE apn to x.boost.ispsn so try that or x.sprint.ispsn. It use to be something kind of similiar but different.

[Q] G2 and $5.99 Tzones

I have a T-mobile G2 with grandfathered $5.99 tzones. My internet worked for few hours the first time I put my sim card in, but now I keep getting service unavailable error message. If I switch phones and put the sim card in Nokia e71 internet works just fine. I am sure if I call T-mobile they are going to say I need one of the android plans.
I have tried all apn's: epc.tmobile.com, wap.voicestream.com, internet2/3.voicestream.com. No luck so far.
Any ideas if there is anyway I would be able to use tzones with G2?
Nope, you have to to be on a android data plan to get your data service working.
You can call up T-Mobile's retention department and ask them to put you on teh preferred android plan for $20 (as oppoes to the $25/$30 plans)
The reason you cant use the 5.99 plan is because the phone's IMEI gets picked up T-mobile's servers and finds it as a ANDROID phone, thus requiring you to get the proper data plan.
Thanks for your response. Do you think rooting the phone will make any difference?

Rooting wont make any difference, Tmobile knows you have a G2 based on the IMEI of the phone.
There is no getting around an android data plan, the best option you have is going to retentions and getting on the preferred android plan for $20
aaah... Not the answer I wanted to hear, but I guess I will have to deal with it.
Thanks!
just an option, when i used that data plan on my iphone i just kept changing the apn til i found one that kept working.
so open ur apn option and just start trying stuff.
with the tzones plan we used epc.tmobile.com, on a friends we used internet2.voicestream.com, or internet1.voicestream.com, or wap.voicestream.com. its not designed to work but with the right apn it just might. i doubt you'll get the hspa+ speeds tho
iPhone is different, it doesn't even support the T-Mobile 3g band. I don't think you'll have any luck with changing apn's...
I tried that. None of the Apns work.
Once interesting thing I noticed is even if I change the apn name to epc.t-mobile.co it still gives me same error message with the web2go logo "service unavailable". If there is invalid APN name it should give me a different error I would have thought.
the only way to get the G2 to work with tzones is to buy the G2 through a carrier other than tmobile (which probably means getting a Desire Z, not a G2)
T-mobile only knows that your G2 is android phone because it has their logo on it (and therefore in their database)
Discussion on IMEI changing is not permitted per rule 9

If I import a G2 from Tmobile Europe, will it work on Tmobile USA tzones?
Does Tmobile USA also have the IMEIs of its European counterpart?
Edit: Desire Z doesn't use AWS. Europe doesn't use AWS.

Unlocked Sprint S6 on Verizon?

I have an unlocked Sprint Samsung S6 and I'm trying to get it to work on Verizon but it doesn't want to work. It shows an exclamation and R where the signal bars are. I have tried setting up the APN and a Verizon rep put the sprint phone in their system, but that didn't work either. Is there any way to get this to work? Do u have to flash Verizon's Rom to it? I noticed that even unlocked it still seems to have the sprint activation stuff..... Please help, scoured the Internet and forums to no avail :/
If you actually got the phone activated onto your line on Verizon, you will need the Verizon PRL on the device for it to show it connected natively to its towers (the 'R' is a roaming indicator...your device is seeing the Verizon towers as roaming since it loaded with a tower list with Sprint towers prioritized). Verizon is still CDMA, so you will need the proper PRL flashed to the phone for it to work, first & foremost, along with your NAM information and all of the Verizon data settings flashed in place of the Sprint data settings. With regard to CDMA switching from Sprint/Sprint-based to Verizon/Verizon-based, there is more to it than merely an ESN swap (activation by an agent) & inserting a SIM.
I am not here to hold your hand through the flashing of anything, but I'm letting you know what will need to be done. These phones have different model numbers for a reason (unlike "hybrids" like newer Nexus devices, newer iPhones & the recently released Moto X Pure). These different models are designated per carrier and the bundled carrier software for many CDMA devices is used in its OTA programming. Sprint devices typically are packed with MSL/SPCs unique to the device and needed to edit the internal NAM & data settings while Verizon branded counterparts have 0s instead of uniques codes. If this is all over your head, you may need to seek the assistance of someone or a company familiar with flashing to get you going if you are hellbent on using THAT device. Good luck.
worked for me but not stable
I also have the s note 5 from sprint and been trying to make it work on verizon. After so many tries in the mobile network setting i got it to partially work. it still have the R symbols on top, which shows your roaming but you will get a 3g speed. My current setting is
Settings>Mobile Networks>Network mode >automatic
Settings>Mobile Networks>data roaming>Roaming network>automatic
Settings>Mobile Networks>data roaming>Roaming guard> all off
Settings>Mobile Networks>data roaming>everything else on
you also have to use the verizon app settings.
i've also tried flashing the prl but had no luck. Any suggestion on how will be appreciated.
So, how about an idiot's guide for making this happen?
If I need help from a vendor, how about posting some referrals, what needs to be done, and how much is fair to pay?
I am a self-professed newb and I just want to take the Sprint S6 that I own outright to Verizon.
Especially because I paid full price for the S6, and Sprint's service sucks inside my building.
Thanks .
What VicFreeze said above is 100% correct, you would have to reprogram/flash the phones CDMA chip/radio and even Verizon will not be able to do so (legally or maybe not smart enough to know how), you want to be on Verizon you need to get one of their phones. Your phone is a G920P, the P is specific to Sprint and the phone has been flashed internally to know the MIED, MDM/MIN, PRL and login passwords for their networks along with the MSL Code direct from the Samsung factory just for Sprint.
So Yeah you can change all this by reprogramming the CDMA chip inside the phone, first you need professional software that will cost $$$ hundreds of dollars, software like CDMA workshop, QPST or DFS will work, learning to use this software is not for newbies, you will also need to get the information from Verizon to flash their carrier specific codes and numbers into the phone, it's not like swapping out your SIM Card like a GSM Phone and your on a different network, this is CDMA and its why Sprint/Verizon use this, its to lock you down. (no, that's not why)(LOL)
Just Google "Carrier programming on CDMA phones"..
I think it would be cheaper to sell your Sprint phone and just get a Verizon phone and save yourself a lot of hassle. Get a G920V, its already flashed with Verizon Codes to access their LTE Network from the Samsung factory (Hence the V is specific for Verizon). Verizon's sales staff might not even know what a CDMA phone is so would you really want them to reprogram it??

VicFreeze and MindTricks sound dead on in there advice. One thing I am pretty sure about unless someone corrects me is .... even though Sprint and Verizon are both CDMA, they operate on different frequency bands which is probably why your getting the 'R' for roaming. CDMA Workshop has the ability to change the radio frequency. I think the two companies also encrypt or code their voice and data traffic and you need the software flashed that has their specific decoders or encryption software for the device to work on their system. I am not sure if the specific radio software changes any of this or not. I am not even sure is CDMA Workshop is compatible with newer Samsung phones now as two years ago I programmed my Sprint HTC EVO 4g to work on my Virgin Mobile talk and text plan without much trouble but have not been able to get CDMA Workshop to connect to a Galaxy Grand Prime as of late. What I did two years ago was easier since Virgin runs off of Sprint Service Towers. Having a ROM compiled for Verizon may help but things have changed. What I did with the EVO two years ago ..... the ROM had Sprint radio files compiled with it. I am not sure if some of those files are separated in the system now on more modern devices as ..... back two years ago Sprint was EVDO and not their LTE uses a SIM card to work. So, things have changed and keep changing and evolving. One thing is sure, is almost every year Service Providers along with device manufacturers are changing what they do and how they do it.

That's what everyone would love to do but at times proves more hassle than what it is worth. this is why there are sites like Swappa and eBay where you can sell your phone for close to competitive price and pick one up a device that is a comparable condition for the service provider you want to swich to for about a break even price or not much more out of pocket.
I dunno if this thread is dead but process should go something like this.... flash factory binary firmware checking "auto-reboot, nand erase, and F.reset" options. Once it boots enable developer options and oem unlock and usb debugging (then do a factory reset from settings menu). Then you can flash the CSC from Verizon stock. Placing VZW .pit file in appropriate section. Then you can flash the BL,AP,CP files from VZW rom. Personally....this seems like alot of unnecessary work with a great chance for missing something. Might be better to root sprint device and manually install vzw modem files, apns.conf, prl, telephony.db.....better yet why not just flash a custom rom from twrp. thats just one zip file in twrp.
I don't know what I've done differently, but I currently have and use without any problems a Sprint G920P on the nations most reliable network… Verizon. I can tell you that I didn't have to jump through all or any of the hoops that others in this post have outlined. I will tell you what I did ; Flashed G920p with Bigdaddy PL3 Aroma V1.x ,TWRP-3.2.1.0, SuperSu-v2.82, and 3.10.61_Stock_Modified_Kernel_By_Aurora_Rom [email protected]#1. Phone has been unlocked by Idonne apps. I believe that last bit has a lot to do with my success. there is a setting in his app if the phone is to be used on a CDMA network or a GSM network. And not to discredit the person that discouraged you from having a Verizon employee help you but it was he that figured out how to make Verizons system find my phone. Not sure exactly what he did but I saw him take his company phone out of his pocket and scan the sticker on the back of it into the system saying "we will just make the system recognize it". Voila, worked perfectly and continues to operate without flaw on their network. I do get a roam "R", but checking settings indicates that I am not roaming. I live on the border to Canada so it is to be expected, but not the case. As far as Network, device says Preferred Network instead of Verizon. It could say your name for all I care as long as it works! Hope this sheds some light on it for you without having to make all of those unnecessary changes. One last note.... the salesman did say that mine is the first Sprint Device that he has seen on their network.... I guess that makes me special huh? Lol...

Carrier not supported. Will rooting/unlocking bootloader fix this?

Just got off the phone with Google, and apparently my service, Go Smart Mobile (feeds off of T-Mobile towers) is not compatible with the Nexus 5x because it only is unlocked to the major carriers. This is very strange to me, as the Nexus 5 was able to use Go Smart. Anyways, I am wondering if me rooting / unlocking the bootloader will open up any opportunity for my device to be compatible with my carrier. I'd like to know if I should return the device, or stick it out and order the converter for my computer and attempt to root. Thanks.
it only is unlocked to the major carriers - I think this is inaccurate information. If the Nexus 5 worked on GoSmart, the 5x should also, I believe.
Before you do any cable ordering or rooting, have you tried sticking a GoSmart nanoSIM in the phone and activating it? If it works on Tmobile towers, it uses the same bands, so it should work. If you have a functioning GoSmart microSIM in your possession, you can cut it down to fit in the 5x or get a nanoSIM from your provider.
You will also have to add the APN settings of GoSmart in Settings/More/Cellular Networks/Access Point Names. Your provider can give you this info.
After a bit more research is GoSmart 3G only? If so, you need another provider. Where are you located?

I'm so sorry, I should have specified. I actually went to a local Go Smart Mobile and tried two different nano SIM cards and even replaced one of them completely. None of them worked. The rep then tried a T-Mobile and AT&T SIM, which worked. My Go Smart Mobile SIM works in my Galaxy S6 Edge, but not in the Nexus 5x. I spoke with a Google agent who confirmed that when Google says "Unlocked" for specifically the Nexus 5x, it only means for the major carriers. This of course proving why my SIM will not be recognized. I can't even access the mobile network settings, since it is greyed out completely. Very disappointing since I am in love with Nexus's and I really don't understand why the Nexus 5 was compatible, but not the 5x. This baffles me
Also I am located in South Florida, and Go Smart does have 4G.
Are you totally commited to GoSmart? Starting at $30 a month Project Fi would likely work in South Florida, as would other providers.
Hopefully others can chime in with solutions. Good luck!
Bump. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
I'm using my 5X on MetroPCS, which isn't a major carrier, but it is part of T-Mobile. I have zero problems with it. I got my SIM activated and have full LTE and even WiFi calling.

Glad to see that Go Smart does have 4G in your area. The maps are misleading--obviously not up-to-date with T-Mobile upgrades. Are you still interested in keeping your S6? If not, you could try calling Go Smart Mobile for a device change (entering the new IMEI) using the same sim. You may want to try that anyway. If, after correct IMEI and APN settings are entered on the phone, it still doesn't work, I'd get the phone replaced. I don't know if you've tried FB, but I asked for some support there. (Basically, anyone have a 5X on this MVNO.)
MVNOs which is what all the sub networks are, for the most part. Being an MVNO they use the same towers as their provider. Any unlocked phone that will work with the provider should work with the MVNO
Rooting probably won't help. Where did you buy the phone. Also what doesn't work, calls and data? What APN are you using?
There are providers that do block IMEI of phones they don't recognize. AT&T used to do this a long time ago and have since abandoned it. Are you sure your MVNO carrier is not doing such a thing?
The Google rep is wrong. The phone can't be unlocked for "only major carriers". It's either unlocked or it's not, though any network can choose to block specific devices if they so choose.
This device is compatible with every network in the world up to 3g/H+. LTE is region specific however.

Device input at the Go Smart Mobile returned a positive on the Google N5X for the service. Hopefully, the device id's are in their system.

Sold my phone to a relative, now no 4G

I picked up the new Google Pixel XL and sold my OnePlus 3 to my uncle. He went to AT&T and went through 3 sim cards with no 4G.
I put my sim back in the OP3 and I get service but no 4g, so it'll make calls but can't send/receive pictures. I checked that the network is on 4g and the APN is on nextgenphone.
Any ideas?
Sounds like your APN is wrong. I am on AT&T and I get 4G LTE speeds without issue. The APN name you listed sounds wrong. Mine is just ATT Phone and again works without issue.
Compare against the settings here:
https://www.att.com/esupport/article.html#!/wireless/KB424489
I had him add the ATT phone APN and still no 4G. Ive always used NXTGENPHONE and gotten 4G

Verizon Phone on AT&T, no mobile data

So I came into possession of a Verizon Moto Z2 Play into which I put my AT&T sim. I was pleased to find that once it switched to Global Mode I could make and receive calls but even after manually inputting the old wap.cingular APN info that I've done a million times on many other phones I still cannot connect to mobile data (my sim only has a 3g package). Am I hitting a hardware limitation of the device or should I take the time to flash it to one of the firmwares here in the ROM section?
Okay I put my sim back into the device I took it out of and now mobile data is no longer working on it either so it looks like AT&T disabled something on their side. I'll go through and check all the other access point settings in this device (and there's a lot since it has a good rom from this site on it) but I think this is probably going to be the straw that breaks the camels back with AT&T and I'll be taking my number to a prepaid service on Verizon's network.
I talked to AT&T and they told me that their computer automatically disabled my data because the Z2 Play's IMEI was flagged as a 3G device. I told them that's simply not true and thanks for nothing but is the radio in it only capable of LTE on Verizon's network? That doesn't seem likely?
