What could be the risks of buying Honor phones that were made before the ban? - Honor View 20 Questions & Answers

I know the ban doesn’t directly affect phones like Honor View 20, and Huawei has promised Android 11 for this phone, but from what I read some people say the future is not clear, and some problems might occur in the future with google apps? What could these problems be? For example, would future updates for Youtube app come for this phone? And is it possible that I encounter some problems with Youtube app if future don’t updates come?
This is the best phone I can buy with my budget by far, I just wanna know what risks I am taking by buying an Honor phone. Any help would be hugely appreciated.
Thank you so much in advance.

Im my opinion there are no risks because 'future' is like 5-10years and in that time phone will be long gone in the trash or better recycled.
The same is with old android phones that havent recieved updates for 4, 5 or more years, maybe some apps are starting to get unsopported becaue of the old android version. But gapps, for example youtube you will always be able to play... Ok, you wont have the 'latest' version but it wont affect the video play.

Who knows? We don't even know if our devices will get an official 4.4.4 let alone 5.0.
Samsung won't ever give you confirmation of something like an upcoming update as usually their support desks seem to know so little that you may as well ask the man in the moon.
CM12 will bring AOSP Lollipop, but it's still work in progress

I wouldn't give up hope just yet (Lollipop hasn't been out for long), but neither would I be holding my breath for an update either.....
Samsung has to integrate TouchWiz and do a lot of quality testing , if they released an unstable or unsecured release of Lollipop it would cause more problems and customers as they have a reputation to keep, if you look at Samsungs line of products maybe only one or two products actually have Lollipop, as they are probably slowly testing feedback and bugreports, if they just recklessly just throw an update to every-device it would cause havoc
If I had to guess I would say sometime next year (probably within the first 3-4 months) this tablet will get a update.

This is what they should be doing, but if you look at this years 4.3 Jellybean release for Galaxy S3 they appeared to have done none of it. Also, just read this morning that the Note 4 will skip straight to 5.0.1 - so they're probably not going to waste much time porting many more snapdragon devices to 5.0, which could mean an even longer delay.
Please excuse my cynicism, I've been a Samsung customer for too long....

I'm guessing May or June of 2015 for Android 5.x and that will be the last update. I really hope they get Lollipop on the Note 10.1 2014, which is more important to me than my tab pro 8.4.

by using your logic, the galaxy s5 hasnt got 5.0, because it hasnt got 4.4.4 too

Say what?
Where did i say that one was dependent on getting the other?
By my logic Samsung haven't confirmed one or the other - not the next incremental revision, let alone the next version.
From past experience they are unlikely to respond fully to enquiries about what updates are due and remain very non commital at the best of times.
pretty straight forward to understand......
Lollipop 5.0.2. just started rolling out to the Tab S series:

Hopefully it's not that big a leap to get out the Tab Pro series as well. I don't think the differences were anything radical....

Samsung Lollipop update uncertainties
I was about to buy a Galaxy Tab Pro (3 actually) but this whole Lollipop update thing has given me cold feet. I'm going to stick with iPads. I just don't like the feeling they're withholding OS updates in order to drive new (Galaxy Tab S2) hardware sales. I always felt that was happening with Windows and PC hardware vendors and I ended up buying a Mac because of it (and never looked back).
Good luck guys and may all your Lollipops be as fruity as an Apple.

I work for a Google school and I think that's just about the biggest vote of platform confidence anyone can give. We do need at least one new Android tablet to test Appinventor Apps and we will buy. However, KitKat has been a frustration. Not being able to capture direct to MicroSD for example is unforgivable in the modern OS era. Lollipop promises to fix a great many KitKat issues and I think the HARDWARE partners like Samsung have a responsibility to get the customer base past KitKat ASAP.
I do not know what you mean when you say: "Apple holds update releases". But if you are suggesting that Apple only applies software updates to ONE generation of hardware you are totally wrong. I have an iPad 2 which has now had 5 different iOS iterations from iOS4 to iOS8 and is now possibly 3x better than the already excellent device I originally purchased. I've never had to even wait extra time because it's an older device. I want this for Android as well! and I reserve the right to put as much pressure as I can to make the hardware vendors give it to us. Let's not forget the damage platform fragmentation does to the Android developer community. It's in the best long-term interests of all hardware partners to keep as many of us as possible on the newest version of Android but they are not walking the walk. We need to encourage them.
My intentions are good, peace out.

Well, the youngest that MacBook could possibly be is October 2008! Unfortunately it's a 32bit machine which is just a different technology generation. It is a bit of bad luck though. I have a MacBook Pro from Mid 2007 that's running the very latest Yosemite OS just fine. It's pretty amazing when an 8 year old computer just keeps getting better and better for free. AND THAT'S EXACTLY THE WAY IT SHOULD BE. Screenshots of the system profile can be posted if you have doubts.
I don't know why people are trying to argue this, it's a simple fact that Apple are just better in updates than Samsung will ever be. The main reason for it is that it's easy for Apple to support since they make their own hardware and software that doesn't run on thousands of devices like Android. Samsung should still try to do a better job at updating. I don't like how they didn't even say whether the Tab Pros will get Lollipop or not, even though they were released only a few months before the Tab Ss (which did get Lollipop) and are just as powerful (they use the same chips).
Regardless I myself am gonna flash CM12 on my Pro 8.4 because I don't know if Samsung ever intend on giving us the update we deserve and regardless I am tired of TouchWiz.
Well one thing Android will have that Apple never will, is Android IS OPEN SOURCE and also Samsung is pretty good in releasing the source code for its products and kernels, meaning even if they don't release an update for a specific device it can still be supported by 3rd party firmwares or if you want to compile it yourself. - let's see someone do that with Apple.
http://opensource.samsung.com/reception.do
You don't think Apple has IOS 8 or 9 in the works? if it was Open Source like Android then Apple users would be doing the same thing begging for the update, but since Apple is closed source you don't hear about it until they tell you.
2 Cents
Also I still think the Tab Pro series will still get an update , I think Samsung owes at least one major version update being it was released at nearly the same time as the Tab S - I am suspecting it will be next in line for the lollipop update - considering its the Pro series line it might need more security and testing then the S series does.
lollipop update for tab pro.

3rd party apps not being able to write to the SD card is a deliberate security decision. However, it is easily overridden by an app from the Play Store. Search for "sdfix". BTW, it is also needed in lollipop so waiting for 5.1.1 won't help.

Question about LineageOS for a newbie?

My GF recently inherited an older Galaxy S5 phone. The factory build only goes up to 6.0.1 and of course this phone hasn't been patched for Meltdown/Specter or any other recent security updates. The good news is that I understand this isn't much of a concern as long as all apps are downloaded and updated through the play store. She is an end-user, not a tinkerer. That is for me to do!
Here are my questions.
-What would be the main advantages of installing LineageOS for a very basic user? Would it improve security, performance, or battery life on the Galaxy S5?
-Will updates and bug fixes come in over the air much like they do for a supported factory OS or would I need to do these myself?
-Any apparent bugs in the most recent version?
-Would is be best to leave the phone as is since it is working and she is probably not really at risk for most of the security concerns?
I also have an older Galaxy S3 as well as some crappy Asus Zenfone 2E or something myself and would consider modding these if there was a benefit.
Thanks,
Conor

My main motivation is not security, but privacy. With lineageOS I can avoid Google apps.
I doubt there are big advantages in other aspects.
Biggest security risk is still the user. The more power you have over the OS, the higher the risk.
Ota updates come in weekly. Need like four or five taps to get downloaded and installed.
For older phones lineageOS helps you in saving storage space, or get adopted SD storage.
I may try the Galaxy S3 first.

I may try this on my Galaxy S3 first and see what I think. This is a spare phone for me so it can be my guinea pig. I also have a Nexus 6 and see that is on the supported device list. I consider that my go-to if something were to happen to my Note 8 but might install this to get Oreo if it works out well on the S3. The Asus is not but this was probably sold as a cheap throwaway phone anyway. The storage is basically full from the get-go with useless apps.
I assume you can use the Google Play Store if you wish. There are Google Apps I would want like the play store and Hangouts, etc. I run my business off a Google Voice number that redirects to my cell phone number so would want Hangouts for sure. I know this can be a piece of junk but I use it.

Yes, you can use OpenGapps or similar to get apps from Goggle. Only thing she might miss if she uses them is the Samsung apps which won't install, but there are plenty alternatives, but transferring old data may be an issue.

I started custom ROM business with a broken display phone. After first success I bought the exactly same model for use as primary phone. I continued using the broken one as versuchskaninchen. Testing alternatives or trying to reproduce bugs with clean installation. That's the recommended method for reporting a bug.
Software support of s3 is not as good as nexus. I bought a used s3 because dev is working on bringing device drivers to Linux kernel. - not completed yet.
Most people use play app (in GApps package) to access play store. I use more privacy friendly open source alternatives. Only WhatsApp is a social standard in Germany. I get it from play store with an app called yalp.
I am not sure this would be best for my GF.
My GF is not technically inclined at all and does not like change. I have her phone setup and working well for her right now and figure that if she is happy, I should leave it alone. I might mess around with a spare phone though.
I had to basically pry the old and unsupported Windows 8 phone from her. My mom upgraded and gave her an old S5. The Nokia Lumia 635 was a solid phone but nothing was being updated and it had essentially become a phone for talking, texting, and a WIFI hotspot as support for all the apps was dropped.
I have never seen anything concrete about rooting a Nokia Lumia but these would be a fun project since they are basically useless. Her old phone was a Lumia 635.

Demanding Extended Google Android Support

Android 10 was released on September, Xiaomi said that they will update Mix 3 on October, But looking at the situation it's started getting ridiculous, we're now at the end of February which is 5 month over the schedule and we have got nothing. I don't care if Android 10 is not different from 9, I paid for a flagship and I should get a flagship service, not to mention this is also applies for the Android security patch which is pretty old and last updated on October. Also the forgotten 5G variant which still running on MIUI 10. Is this is a joke? really?? if anyone knows who to contact from the company so we can gather and make a demand on extending our device support since we didn't get anything for a long time.
Xiaomi was a good company I don't know what's happening to it.
Xiaomi release about 37 phones every couple of weeks.
They can't support all of them. They've now scrapped the Mix line completely and it seems they've given up on the users.
My next phone probably won't be a Xiaomi device.
China has received Android 10 on the mix 3 a few weeks ago, only a matter of time before we get it, the virus must be the cause of the delay

No, the virus is just an excuse, this is software development they can work remotely.
There's so many bugs, at least in my experience. Ghost notifications, broken app switcher sometimes, glitchy gallery, disappearing lock screen notifications, the ads in the cleaner app, and so on.
It's so disappointing, all of this on a seemingly orphaned flagship.
Disappearing lock screen notifications is "feature" according to them, kinda make sense but everybody, including me, is used to other way. Ads in Xiaomi app is also a feature, but this one you can change at least, you can do that by going into that apps settings and then find "recommendations" and turn that off..

They may not be able to, it is entirely possible that the company does not allow IP (IE, the code) to be taken off site, or worked on remotely, and depending where the employees are, they may not have access to internet that is reliable and speedy enough to be conducive to remote development. Plus if some of the European news sources are to be believed, the true scale of 2019-nCoV may be 10x higher than what China is actually sharing with the world.
Your chances of getting anything by demanding it unless you are going to try to file a suit in China (good luck) are almost zero. I agree this device is not being treated as a flagship by Xiaomi, the Redmi and Pocophone devices that sold much better got much faster updates, which is not cool. It's also been the case for a while now that the global users are second fiddle to China ROM users.
Basically there's nothing any of us can do, except wait, unless you want to try to develop your own rom, which given what I've personally run into is anything but easy for this device. I was barely able to get Android 10 booting, and lots of things were broken.
Pocophones and Redmis has much higher development in India. Even if the devs in China were affected by CoVid, and halts development, for example the Poco or Pocophone's software dev could still be running in full course. Most of the releases are Indian-first, you just need to change region to India and you'll get the update. For the Mix 3, if they're solely based in China, it'll be affected by the outbreak, release will stagger for more months but you'd still get the update nonetheless, albeit not on the time you expect it would be.
Unless not getting an Android 10 upgrade makes your phone unusable, I don't see the reason why people whine on these types of things. I mean, get a Pixel if you want to experience the latest bugs from Android.
^^ I agree, and also people should have in mind that software for Mix line does not come with all the bugs, that come to Redmi and other phones, so yes, they might get update faster, but see how many users of those phones are complaing about bugs and searching for fixes, as far I could see there are not bugs on this phone. But update is released today, at least some users are reporting that, so we will see if hos it goes, maybe I'm wrong..
Update has been released today, based on Android 10.
Doesn't Google mandate that phones should be supported for 2 or 3 years?
No, this is not AndroidOne program
I'm confused... We do have Android 10. Global has had it for a while.
No update for the 5g.
Shame on you Xiaomi.
This is my last Xiaomi.
I've had Android 10 since 2019 on my Mi Mix 3.

I just purchased this cellphone. There is no current way to unlock it's bootloader. So your correct that means no custom recovery no root access an no custom ROMs are possible.
I guess you can thank Donald Trump for that. Last year he decided that the only country allowed to use cellphones to gather consumer data was America.
Long story short after Huawei could not run a multi billion dollar business 90 days at a time which was the only way he allowed Huawei to use Google an Android: Huawei went with it's own propriatory operating system an dumped it's relationship with America Google an Android.
As a result this cellphone being after these events this cellphone is completely locked in every way.
You can install google play services (with some difficulty ) an you can install things like themes an apks.
But that's all for now unless Trump realises that America lost billions of dollars in business when it forced Huawei to walk.
Can you really see Trump the utter narcissist going to Huawei an apologising an removing 90 day business operations permissions from them?
I don't think so lol

I understand what your saying. But my friend these cellphones are awesome stock. In my country New Zealand you can buy them with google play services preinstalled. Ram an battery management is superb. Its the perfect reliable cellphone for work.
Only thing annoying about it is a weakness in many Chinese cellphones. And that is what I call the 'micro status bar'.
Us older folks like large status bars.
If you want to play with roms kernels root etc then its not for you.
If you want the perfect relaible workphone then please buy it.
If you want a bit more power an performance the get the pro version. About 40% more powerful chip.
But yes not for tinkerers as they will get no fun with a locked bootloader.
Wow I didn't know root ended back then in 2018. Thanks for the info ?

Here in India, you can get the 9X Pro for around 10$-15$ more for the 6+256gb variant but the pro doesn't come with google apps whereas the regular 9X comes with it.People who have used 9X Pro had a terrible user experience as some apps like swiggy (app like ubereats) and Uber don't work as they need google play services plus a locked bootloader is like icing on the cake.
Huawei back then in 2018 used to provide developers their phone so that they can develop custom roms ad mods. Then i don't know why they did a full 180 on the community. They also sponsered XDA developers

It has to be because of Trump. I very much hope he is voted out in 2020 by americans before he starts a war. He has attacked Huawei or been part of 3 attacks on them in the last 2 years that I know of. Accuses them of all kinds of crazy things.
I am feeling the loss of privilages developers used to have with Huawei like the ones you mentioned.
We can only wish for a brighter future my friend.
Thanks for the clarification of the 9x an 9x pro.
Why should a cellphone company cooperate with developers in a country with a leader bent on destroying them?
Or it could be by demand of the Chinese government?
Time will tell I guess?

Huawei is not stupid. They saw the writing on the wall. They knew that Trump was shutting them out. While I disagree with their decision. It is understandable considering Trump's actions. I have owned a mate 9 for three years. Never felt the need to root it. At least while the themes app was still working.
Unfourtanley, even that is dead now. Yes, I understand that XDA is all about OWNING your phone. When I look at the specs of this phone and the price. God, I wish we still had Honor as competition to other brands here in the US. Other brands with similar specs start at 500 or more...Sorry, Bit I miss the competitive pricing they once brought to the market.
True that, but those expensive Samsungs have been locked down for years, and so-called "Flagship killers" like Oneplus , have become Flag ships themselves, i was the list for one of the first One plus fones it was awesone, but theyve gotten like the rest of em , $600+. , i dont really need to unlock this phone, anymore than i need to unlock my $80,000 Raptor or my $35000 Harley, it works and it keeps working, good enough

New update for A51 & A71

Samsung has released a new software update bringing a range of leading Galaxy S20 features to the Galaxy A series. Galaxy A51 and A71 device users will now be able to harness some of the Galaxy S20 series’ powerful innovations, designed to make the way we capture, connect and share more dynamic than ever before.

Update 14-07-2020: Updated received on my unlocked A71.
It's 1842,98MB
It's brilliant that Samsung keeps updating the A series but honestly (probably besides some security patches) there is nothing interesting in this update
I guess that for pictures and videos pro users already use filmic Pro, open camera or port of Google camera
The rest is just gimmick.

What does it do?
I replace all stock Launchers with Nova. Will OneUI 2.1 make sense for me?

You can search online for the difference between the two. I really want Audio Share so I can share audio with friends

Everytime I'm here I always see a distasteful post from you. If you're not happy with your device and support it comes with it then do yourself a favor, sell it and buy something else.
Thanks.

ROTFL [emoji28]
Where did you see me saying that I'm not happy with my phone? I actually think it's brilliant (especially the battery) while costs a fraction of S20 [emoji3]
But at the same time I'm not gonna praise all software changes it gets if I don't like it. That's called being a fanboy, buddy.
You seem not to understand what I say. But you can always ask [emoji6]

Same goes for you towards any forum. He never said he don't like the phone, only commenting the update, wich is helpful in general or specific.

No it doesn't, more than once I've seen this user say this or that about the phone or the apps in it. Not talking about this thread either.

What? Prove it then. With links to my posts. I honestly can't recall complaining about this phone. No prove means you're just talking rubbish.
I did not complain about the apps, but I admit I complained about system apps not allowed to be removed (those additional from Samsung). But dude this is always the case with all phones besides android one
I will also complain about Samsung not letting the camera to be fully used by 3rd party apps (I can't get 60 fps videos, and when I set 120 fps, the phone records in 3 fps). Do you buddy think it's fair to purchase any thing and not be able to use it however the hell you want? Jeese... But again, very popular practice.
And now - hang on and sit down - other people complain about the latest system update not me - them. I've put on hold the update as I generally don't update anything.

If you put updates don't hold, don't complain when something else doesn't work as intended.

Dude, you don't even ready what I write or you constantly have problems understanding
What I point out is not due to software issues. It is all intended and common amongst manufacturers. Most can be fixed by AOSP (which we don't have) except the camera limitations. That's entirely Samsung.
Anyway, stop talking to me. Seems like you have no clue...

Well you are right in one way ?
I've seen you complain about system apps and the Google framework in it's entirety, but yeah. Obviously I don't have a clue right? ?
You want an Android One device, buy one. Simple as that.

As for updates , my UK unlocked A71 is still on April 1 update , I know the A 71 will get updates in a " big " lump.. every quarter, but I would prefer incremental updates, rather than a huge update .. if it ever gets here .. i want to to keep stock , romed before ... done it .. hence keep stock

No it was fab , got want I wanted etc.. but I've been there done that, it was good, but took time. hence now just want " out of the box" with nova launcher. It's even helped me get full java games, apps, etc on my Chromebook .
That's why I'm still here, as they say " once you tweak you can never turn back!!"
Being new to Samsung and how they update their devices, how long does it usually take for the update to hit all channels/versions of the phone? I have the Panama version of the A71 and have not yet received the update. Just curious as to what to expect so I don't have to spam the update button throughout the day.
