Fold 2 upgrade - Samsung Galaxy Fold Questions & Answers

Do I upgrade FOLD to FOLD 2 ? For 0.3" of extra screen and no S Pen.. I am gonna say no and hold off til we get an even bigger screen and the S Pen... I see no advantage of the FOLD 2 over the original FOLD sadly... What do others think is the upgrade from FOLD to FOLD 2 worth it ?

I just picked up 512gb one $1499 new AUS I'm not paying 3000 for a phone lol. I'm happy with it I do like bigger front screen but mainly will use folded out. I'll pickup 2nd model when 3rd one is out

Broke my Nexus 4, is the Note 2 right for me?

Sucks that I have to make this thread but here it goes.
So my month long Nexus 4 experience came to a very sad conclusion. When I received it, it was the best phone I'd ever used. The stock android Nexus experience was incredible. 7 days in, I had a bike accident, and the nexus 4 broke it's back. I didn't really blame it's fragile nature because it was an exceptional condition. Then yesterday, it fell just 18 inches off a chair, face down, inside a Rearth Ringke case...aand it's screen cracked.
I used to defend the Nexus 4 a lot, but I have realized that it's a bit too fragile for someone who expects modern smartphones to survive 1.5 foot falls at least.
Anyway, so now I'm in a situation where I can buy one of my friends two phones off him, both are just 10 day old so as good as new.
a) S3
b) Note 2
Obviously the Note 2 is a better phone, but I'm just concerned about the size.
1. How was your experience with the Note 2 at first? Was the size an inconvenience? Did you adapt eventually? How long did it take?
2. Any issues with Touchwiz? I'm coming from a Nexus, remember.
3. Are there too many broken screen issues with the Note 2 as well (Like there are with the nexus)? How's the durability in general?
If 1. is an issue then I'll probably go for the S3.

Sad to hear about your n4. I say go for the note 2. It may seem a bit too big at first but soon you get comfortable with it and other phones seem small . About touchwiz its come a long way from what it used to be. I used to hate tw as it used to make phones look waaay outdated but now after using the note 2 I dont know how im gonna do without it its just amazing and makes life so much easier with its functions. If your worried about the sceen breaking there are cases reported of it breaking by falling from a very low height. I have had a few drops but my hard rubber case has stopped it from even getting a scrarch

Yeah there are such cases for every phone but it's the frequency of cases in the N4 that's worrying.
Hmm yeah that's what I've heard, that you tend to get used to the 5.5 inch screen after a while.
1. Took me about half a day to adapt from my Nokia N8.
2. It's probably easier to use than stock Android. All stock features are there so, I guess not.
3. The plastic looks/feels cheap, but it's very durable in my experience. Also, both the SGS3/SGN2 have Gorilla Glass 2, which is the most durable screen glass out there. Unless you're talking about Nokias (My N8 once came out from under a quad bike I was riding without a scratch).
Droped it from 1.5 m today and he survived.

Most guys here will advice you to get the Note 2 but the fact is the Note 2 is pretty fragile and a lot of people here have also reported cracked screens from small heights. The note 2 is an excellent device but it has to be used with care. If you can be more careful then it should do you well otherwise just go for something more rugged like a Sony Experia Z or HTC One X+. The S3 is almost as fragile as the Note 2 but does fit quite comfortably in the hand in comparison to the Note 2. Also I had the S3 and because it was easy to use with one hand and easily fit the pockets I never dropped it. I've already dropped the Note 2 twice trying to use it with one hand, fortunately It was lucky enough not to have suffered a cracked screen.

I came from HTC Desire HD using custom ROM with plain vanilla JB 4.1.2. SO I was used to stock JB. Getting used to Note II was no problem. It is such a wonderful phone, I love ti. It is bigger but I got used to it. Touch Wiz is a bit ugly, but pretty practical and has good visability. As I'm older I prefer visibility over "design"
Yes, it feels fragile, especially for me coming from Desire HD which had ALUMINIUM UNIBODY, but it is so light and you can keep it in your shirt pocket. I wouldn't drop it though But this doesn't mean anything, it is just the feel we have towards something. I had DHD for 2 years, and it fell frm my shirt pocket when I was bowling, just landed on it's back or screen flat. I also had a silicon cover for it. And it died! No screen broken, nothing, but it died. And DHD has one of the sturdiest bodies of all phones. So maybe that doesn't mean anything. Maybe plastic is better fit to survive the falls. I'm planing on getting a cover for Note 2 though, since I'm afraid it might slip from my hand, and I think I'll get this one: SAMSUNG EFC-1J9FW, since I have similar (flip open) for my N7 and it is just great.
get this case to go with a Nexus 4: http://www.spigen.com/cell-phone/go...-series.html?gclid=CJXBj5rCu7UCFQWCnQodGkYAOA
I like both phones and have both. One week I use one, the next week the other. Both are comfortable and easy to use. I use Nova launcher. Both are excellent.

at the moment, no.
the cover plastic said don't put anything on the screen,
the warning during setup said don't put anything on the screen,
the website care instructions say don't put anything on the screen,
yet there i was standing at a samsung experience store being asked if i wanted to buy a protective screen cover for the front, main, and back of the phone. i was confused to all hell.
after a bunch of back and forth, the workers at the store said that the warnings "mean to say" dont use an adhesive screen protector. the one they sell is applied with a spray solution.
my last question to them was "will it void my warranty?", and unfortunately, their answer was "no, it SHOULDN'T void your warranty".
once i heard that type of careful wording, i knew they had no idea what they were talking about, even the manager ( since this purchase was expensive, they had a manager overseeing it).
as of right now, i am still quite careful of how hard i press the buttons and what conditions i bring out the phone in.
if i start to see scratches, i might consider the main screen proctector, but for now, i will keep it as is.
sorry for the long reply. lol
I put one on and have 0 regrets! Comes off really easy and I like the extra piece of mind!

Could you post oictures... I bought the Olixar one but I'm hesitant to put it on...
I have installed 2 different types and this one has been the easiest to install, I have removed 2 of them so far and no residue left behind by the screen protector.
See attached pics of my phone with the screen protector applied. (I did mess up a bit and left couple of small bubbles in there and top left was due to me placing a sticker to remove a dust particle)
This is the one that i bought
https://www.amazon.com/Protector-Hy...2332&sprefix=galaxy+fold+scree,aps,338&sr=8-3
PS. The fingerprint and some of the marks you see are not visible to the naked eye, Camera enhances them a bit and makes it look worst than it actually is.
Olixar easy to install is clear smooth and easy to keep clean

i get protecting your screen and everything, but due to crap fitment and cutting, now the phone looks like the gen.1 galaxy fold.
can anyone chime in, who has tried a screen protector with edge to edge fitment?

the regular msrp. $1980 USD, or $2599 CDN, im in canada so this phone cost $2910 after taxes
i would hold off. if you've already spent that much money on other devices, theres no point being in such a rush.
the new year is here already. pay the remaining off or sell it somehow, have money ready for the new fold 2 (not the clam shell flip phone) if it comes out later this year.
good luck!

Question Fold 2 vs Fold 3- worth upgrade?

More users have fold 3 and a lot have/had fold 2 so i think worth open discuss.
Worth upgrade from older model?
What is for + and - compared fold 2 to fold 3?
I read posts users fold 2 and 3 about worse speakers and microphones work in fold 3 by water resistant.
Anybody can confirm above?
Yes if you absolutely need that S pen and higher storage. I gladly traded in my Fold2 for a 512 Fold 3, two cases + spen, care+ and charger for $846.96.
Otherwise, it really is a Fold2.5 instead of a Fold3. Cheers
honestly if u had the fold 2...it isnt necessarily worth it. on the other hand... im glad i did... the hinge being less bulky is a major win for me... and it feels noticeably lighter in the spigen thin armor when compared to the fold 2. I also love the in display cam doesn't take away from my home screen wallpaper. Minor... but major boost on how i feel when using the phone.
No. I have Fold 2 and I returned my Fold 3 for these reasons:
not so good battery life as Fold 2
noticeably worse sound from external speakers
writing with SPen over crease is awkward
S Pen case supplied by Samsung is a Joke ( I currently use leather flip case over my Fold 2 )
I hate that selfie hole cover up, I would rather live with display cut out which does not bother me.
Good things in F3:
512 GB storage
120Hz front screen
noticeably brighter inner screen
Inner screen display protector feels more like glass
Got pretty good trade in from Samsung for my old Fold 2 and S Pen case but still decided that I am going to hold onto my F2 little longer. I still believe they will release something like Note 30 or what ever they call it. This phone is not for masses despite the hype and initial volume of orders.

Only internal screen sadly. It would be great if it worked with the outer screen too, just for a quick note. I don't tend to want to use the pen out and about, for fear of dropping the phone!
100% worth it to me. The Z Fold 3 feels like a more refined device in hand. Can't really explain why. But the addition of SPen support, water resistance, and the 512GB option made it worth it.
I traded in my ZF2 for the 512GB model the SPen Flip Case AND the Spen Pro, used a $100 promo code, my first responder discount, and used Rakuten to get 12% cash back. Brought it down to just under $700.
When the unlocked 512G version is available in Silver, I'll consider getting one. Until then, my ZF2 is just peachy for me.

Question Help me decide. I have S21U. Should I get the Z Fold 3?

Amazon has a really great price on the unlocked US version and comes with the Buds as well for $1500! I currently have the S21 Ultra. The Ultra has bigger battery, better camera, and dust resistant.
If I were to buy the Fold I would keep my Ultra.
So is it worth switching? I'm a huge Note fan as well. Would it be wise to maybe wait until Feb and see if the s22 Ultra is basically the Note with built in Spen?
I was also toying with the idea of scoring a deal on a Tab S7 since I need a new tablet. Would it maybe just be best to stick with the S21 Ultra, buy my tablet and then get the S22 Ultra in Feb?
I'm also worried about the Fold 3 and screen cracking in the middle I'm seeing a lot on Reddit.
Just go for it. The fold 3 is better than any tablet. And the advantage of having the phone and the tablet with you really makes a difference.
I came from an S21 Ultra, and switched to Fold 3, I'm very pleased with the change, at the start, I did miss the S21 camera, but the Fold 3 camera is still fine for me.
The rest of the Fold 3 is fantastic, the for media consumption, is just brilliant using that center screen.
This is with me all the time, which a tablet wouldnt be.
Reliability wise, it feels very well built, and the screen doesn't feel fragile at all (I had the fold 2 before this, and never had any problems with the screen through my ownership)
Hold your horses if you want to root - its far better on the S21 for that right now - i can guarantee that lol
Ive seen enough videos side by side with the camera and IMO they look very similar, I'm sure the s21 zoom is amazing but for normal shots side by side its pretty hard to tell the difference.
You basically get a folding tablet in your pocket vs a typical phone thats what you get. Is it worth it? I think hell yes
I love the folds. this is my second after Fold 2 (for a year). Fold 3 hasnt been as reliable as fold 2 for me. Screen is already having issues after having sand in the hinge. I see so many screen failures in reddit group and samsung refuses to cover those under warranty even if it was not fault of your own. so be mindful of that.

this is very personal. I cant live without a large screen in pocket. So personally I'll chose fold everytime.
S22 isnt going to be radically differnt from s21U. Minor improvements everywhere wont make it a replacement for fold 3.
I personally hate having to do anything productive or even researching a product on normal phones, Fold solves that problem very well. I've tab s7+ too which I use only for media consumption.

What about the camera downgrade and the fragile screen? A lot of people are having the Fold's main screen break, even after just a few days.
So, the main takeaway is will most be happy or disappointed switching from the S21U to the Fold?
Keep the s21. I think if you want a foldable the flip is the better buy. But it depends.
I got the fold 3 for about 1100 on swappa as soon as it was released in august. The device feels great. The hinge is satisfying the 120 hz on both screens are nice (albeit marginal improvements). Generally the ability to see more detailed content is wonderful.
But
The cell signal is bad, the battery is bad, the display is fragile (inner display), the outer display you can do very little on, and the list goes on (including the camera experience just not being comparable to the s21). I like the fold 3 as an experiment and it is a jack of all trades master of none in my eyes. Lots of work needs to be done.
If you want to beta test it be my guest. But there’s a ton of issues I have. And I’ll probably always reach for my iPhone first
You just simply have to ask yourself: what do you actually need?
In my case, I am not a photography enthusiast, but I had to carry my cellphone and my tablet every time I go.
Phone for communication (of course), and tablet to carry all my (more than 100GB) documents everywhere (to work on my papers, read some textbooks, ...)
I found it is much more convenient now to carry only one gadget that can serve as a phone and as a tablet at once.
It's rather bulky and heavy, I admit, as a phone. That is the price I have to pay, I guess.
I went from Fold2 to S21U ... after 3 months I went back to fold 2, now I have the Fold3
I understand what I need
Once you've used the Fold, it's hard to go back
Honestly, I am not a fan of these "help me decide" posts. If you need all of us to convince you that you want/need this phone, then you probably are not going to be convinced. There is only ONE person that can "convince" you and that is you.
Look at reviews, look at tests, look at everything and then decide. If you need to HOLD one, then ping a friend with one or go to a store and hold it. No amount of words are going to convince you if you are not already convinced.
Good luck on your search and hope you settle on something that makes you happy!

I got mine about 2 weeks ago but good thing is to keep it clean that will fix any issues from the folding screen even tho it's the 3rd gen it's still fragile I like it bc I had the z flip I loved it but I did miss the bigger screen of a tablet so I waited and got my z fold for 189 just 2 weeks ago but yeah just use air duster to keep the dust out don't take to really dusty places and make sure you don't put anything else in your pocket with the z fold 3 no debit cards no nothing and get you a rugged case with hinge protection there's like 3 or 4 cases that are not to bulky and when you clean the screens use lens cleaner

Question Is there any hack to use/bypass REGULAR S-Pens & disable warnings?

So if I hold down buttons (on a forbidden stylus)) I can click and drag in my fold4. It is ABSOLUTELY compatable with older stylus
Its a simple matter of having it allowing the frequency codes of the other stylus. We know it sees them in order to throw up the warnings.
I strongly believe the "will damage your screen" warnings are for gorillas who might use the phone.
I have never warn out a single stylus,
I am a very light pressure drawer and on op of that I have soft nibs & spring nibs from other pens
I want to take the risk and use my standard pens as I have many Wacom devices I use at once and it get annoying swaping pens.
Yes I have the 2-in-1 pro spen. But I dont want the hassle of having to flip the switch 100 times a day.
Same here, hope there is a workaround.
¿Any non samsung spen compatible with our fold 4? I don't want the bt version, just a standar one to have it at home.

Nillkin iSketch Adjustable Capacitive Stylus... Bought one a year or so ago. It works on ALL capacitive touch screens...
Cost around $50Aud but work brilliantly...

You should find a little cheaper if you look as this was 1st hit I found....
I have an old Samsung HM5100 stylus and I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to be able to use it with my fold 4. If anyone can figure out how I can I will be forever thankful.
Came from Note 20 Ultra. There is no reason I shouldn't be able to use it on my Fold4.
Let us all not let this thread die, please.
I have a Note 8 AND a Note 10+.
Both their S-Pen's air gestures can be recognized by the sensors on the Fold 4's inner display.
And I'm gonna be using it with a screen protector anyway.
I don't understand WHY anyone hasn't paid attention to this thread yet.
Come on guys, you'll be collecting blessings out of this.

NO !
SPen Fold edition has an special "retractile nib system" to use with Samsung Folds
Oddly enough, I use the Nilikin Spen on all my devices and it works on the fold 4 even when I turn the SPEN 'off' on the phone, because it is a powered pen (chargeable) .. but- it defeats the purpose. The pen is BIG and has to be carried just as the original SPEN coming from Samsung, and the fold phones do not have WHERE to put them, unless the case has it, and I use the phone naked. Further more- I use a Samsung laptop and it comes with a built in pen that DOES NOT work on the FOLD. Frustration? Hack yeah ! So I have a pen that works on 'all' my devices, but it isn't a reasonable solution. Also - The Nilikin pen has a fairly wide tip compared to the original FOLD SPEN. Not great. Samsung must find a way, with such a bulky phone, to host an SPEN, and better be one compatible to their other devices (laptop and N10/N20 series). Pathetic solution so far for the FOLD 3/4 .
Ok, I won't buy it then!
