S20 Ultra 5G, some questions related to AF/Camera and Battery - Samsung Galaxy S20 / S20+ / S20 Ultra Questions &

Hello,
I am relatively new in the Samsung world. Currently, I own a S20U 5G phone, with latest Android (G988BXXU6DUB5)
I have several questions, just put them in a list not to create a lot of threads. I would be really grateful if you could share advice/your experience.
I've noticed some clicking sound when I exit my Camera app and also when I open Settings for this app inside of it. Is it ok? I bet it is somehow related to the lens.
I've also read some articles regarding the autofocus issues. Are those solved? For me it seems to work decently fine, but I am not sure what are the best settings, should I keep tracking autofocus turned of or on.
Also, I've noticed that if I do some AF test with bringing hand relatively close (20cm), and on the background there are some objects contrasting with the background, some grey squares are popping around them and focus seems to be jumping to them randomly. Did anyone notice the same thing? What are those grey squares?
The battery. My SoT is around 4.5-6hrs, on LTE mostly with some calls, a lot of FB and messenger. I've noticed that the battery likes to drop quickly from 100%. Like if after I start using it on 100%, it could drop to 97% during 10-15 minutes of active usage. Then it is going slower, in a normal pace. Is you experience similar?
Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences.

Sorry if questions seem newbie ones, I just need some advice.

1. Yes it's just the camera sensors locking AF
2. AF was vastly improved with updates, there seems to be no issue with it now
3. Grey squares are usually the camera AI trying to find faces to focus on, so anything that might look a bit like a face to the AI it will try locking onto
4. Normal for Samsung devices to lose a few % very quickly, and your SOT time is fine

Hello, thanks for your answers, it is much clearer now.
I've noticed an odd thing about this specific feature, for example, if my child is moving, it tries to lock onto face with a grey square and if I start shooting, often I get a message "this photo might be blurred" or similar, and it is indeed blurred. Maybe you know how to combat this, if possible? Maybe some specific camera settings?

For moving subjects it's best to use Pro camera mode (Tap the "More" button under the view finder > Pro Mode
Set the shutter speed low as possible while still allowing enough light in, you can raise the ISO to get more light without increasing shutter speed (At the expense of noise depending how high you set it), that way you get a lot less blurring on the moving subject, in this case your child
The blurring occurs if the subject moves while the shutter is open collecting light, so the less time it is open, the less distance the subject will have moved, thus less blur
Works best in good light such as sunlight, then you don't need ISO too high and can drop shutter time right down while still getting good exposure
There is also a setting for Auto camera mode in the camera's main settings called "Tracking Auto-focus" which once you tap the screen to focus on a subject, regardless of where it moves to, it should remain in focus

smart stay

The smart stay has been a hit or miss for me. Can anyone make the screen stay with mere movement alone? This would be helpful when reading in low light situations. I am not interested in shaking but utilizing theaccelerometer, if we can keep the screen bright, then camera limitations could be avoided.
Thank you in advance.
You can look up smart stay ex lite and paid version in play market to see if the dev would look into that. Or it might already have it. XDA reviewed it before on the main page.
Sent from my SGSIII with the XDA Premium App
thank you very much for the response I shall contact the developer and get some more information thank you once again.
I use screebl.
It is orientation based, rather than using the camera to detect eyes. Smart stay didn't last long with me.
Screebl basically keeps the phone on when in a non-horizontal or non-vertical orientation... So like smart stay, you can set your timeout to 15 seconds, and not play the keep alive game. It also has a mode to detect non-movement so that if you leave it in an "active" orientation, but there is no movement at all, it will timeout and shut off.

Smart stay seemed to work well for the first few days but is now more miss than hit. For now I have just used tasker to increase the screen timeout on certain apps that I'm more likely to reach a timeout before I touch the screen. Of course, if you don't already have tasker, it is kind of pricey to buy just for that purpose.
I'm going to try screeble.. tho smart stay seemed to work, i like this idea better?
if you go in the camera app and look at your self using the front camera, you have to keep it at a somewhat far distance in order to get a full head shot of yourself.
If smart stay is enabled and you keep it at the same distance as when using the camera app it actually works. But with that said it to far away from the eyes and makes it far to read.
I have to keep it almost half my arm distance away in order to make smart stay work, which is someone of a let down in bad light such as a bus etc.
The other thing i have noticed if you keep the sgs at eye level the camera may not see you face/eyes and may just be seeing your forehaed and thus does not work.
I personally use screebl. I have had the pro version for a couple years and would never consider not having it. The default setup works great for me.
Also there is the application "screen on" that will keep the screen on when an application is opened or device plugged in.
I have taster, but i do not like how it will allow the screen to dim. I have not found a way around that.
Thank you very much for this very useful tip. I tried it just now. It worked very well.I have deactivated smart stay application. thank you once again.
Smart Stay seemed to be stuck on my phone yesterday... I didnt know what the eye icon was on my phone so looked on here to see it was teh smartstay feature, but for some reason mine would stay on the top toobar and wouldnt go away... I couldnt get it to turn off so finally had to reboot my phone to deactivate it.. my battery was discharging at an outrageous rate....from full charge to low battery warning in three hours...dont know if thats what caused it or not, but today I took my phone off the charger at 7 am and its 215 now and I still show 75% battery left??

Satisfaction with Nougat update

Looks like today majority of Europe is getting Nougat update on HTC 10.
How is update working for you, regarding bugs and stability? I'm kinda scared of updating it, since the Nougat update ruined my Oneplus 3.
just do it. its great
I actually got my new HTC 10 yesterday, and Nougat today, in the Netherlands.
So far no issues at all.
Does it have any affect on battery life?

for me battery life is a little better on N
I think it's a good improvement, but I have had the occasional issue with screen touch sensitivity, for example, on page scrolling - sometimes if I scroll and hold my finger still, the page flickers up and down, and sometimes it scrolls to the start or end hyperfast. Also when using Swype, it sometimes completely misreads the initial finger movements, inserting more characters than I've passed over . These don't happen often enough to be a problem, but they didn't happen before and make me wonder if the screen sensitivity has been tweaked up a bit in some way.
Have been on N for a good 3 weeks already? Generally, the phone is performing admirably, day to day performance is faster, snappier.
However, with all the improvements being made, there are still some bugs that have yet to be quashed, mainly the in built camera app.
Right now, with the camera in Pro mode, whenever I am adjusting more than 1 variable ie; shutter speed & iso, the tap to focus refuse vehemently to work.. Also, live preview for shutter speed never goes past 3-5 seconds. In the past, when I max out the shutter speed (@16 secs) I will most definitely get a blown out image, for now, 5 seconds onwards doesnt seem to make any difference, until you actually take a shot... As a frequent user of the phone's awesome camera to take low lit shots, this is rather disastrous.
My phone is a Taiwan set, so I dunno if these issues are exclusive. Do chime in if you encounter similar problems with the camera app too!
PS: am using another photography app that does manual and RAW (manual camera) works pretty sweet!

exactly. that page flickers up and down. Scrolling in Stock rom is not as smooth as it is in LOS rom. This issue alone makes me sad every time I use my phone. HTC why you do this. No idea if it is good in MM rom. After seeing your post.. I would downgrade to 6.0 just to see how it works.
It's good, definitely more efficient but you'll not have xposed and from what I've read the likelihood is Slim that well get it, I think it's because the base has changed so much and continues to change meaning it has to be modified greatly, this is the only thing I miss. Certain devs also haven't updated their apps. For example Kodi wasn't updated, might be now but wasn't a little while ago.
Personally I think the trade off for performance and stability is worth it.. I wouldn't go back. Plus with the pixel launcher and a decent theme the phone really flies.
So far so good
No problems here, updated on Tuesday.

1 Month with the PD - thoughts

It has been a month since I got the PD.
Some brief thoughts based upon my experience with the phone.
I was an Apple user since they launched the iPhone in 2007. Nothing to do with the perpetual Apple vs. Android debate, just iOS suited my purposes, that's all.
I was using the HTC 10/BB DTEK50/Priv for a while, as a second phone.
I got fairly used to the operating system and to be honest, they are all very similar. But carrying 2, sometimes 3 phones was becoming a right pain, so looked for a good dual sim phone that would run two What's app accounts simultaneously.
Enter the PD. Easily love at first sight. I said this was my "jumping off point".
Wasn't very easy to get hold of, where I live, so had to wait almost a month and PAID-A-LOT-!! LOL
What a truly beautiful phone. I have used every Apple phone ever made, every BB phone made, 2 Vertu's (UGHH), and hand on my heart can say, I still cannot stop looking at it.
I had a major issue after setting it up, which is discussed in another thread.
I had no home screen icons or apps visible, only a blank screen that allowed calls and messages to come through in the status bar, could enter settings, but that was it.
The eventual solution, after almost suffering a heart attack, was to load both sims in, and then ejecting the sim tray. The apps just popped up instantly. Very strange, indeed.
After that, everything has been super easy.
-Stellar Battery (and I am a heavy user)
-2 whatsapp accounts running - awesome.
-What a lovely screen!
-No complaints with the camera. I like it. Even the slightly synthetic "Leica" look in the Wide Aperture Mode.
-The Fingerprint sensor is absolutely instant.
-EMUI is easy and nice to navigate
-The ability to edit the quick launch(?) icons in the pull down menu is excellent.
Now the bits that are bugging me.
1) No firmware updates. The last one was, I believe, in December, and I still am on B138. This is something that Huawei needs to look into post haste. I have written to them 5 times, till today. No response whatsoever.
2) Notifications - this is the elephant in the room. They are random at best.
All the Settings - Unlimited data Access, Battery Optimizations, Battery Ignore Whitelists, Priority Notifications, etc. are all on, as is oft discussed, and checked, but whatsapp and emails sometimes still do not give me a notification, until I open the app. This IS an issue for me. I am missing time constrained messages all the time. If anyone has a fix or solution for this, I will be very grateful.
3) Keyboard, Sometimes, the keyboard will freeze if the screen sleeps whilst the keyboard is open in an app, and I reopen it.
I have to collapse the keyboard and bring it up again. Not a huge deal, but an annoyance, none the less. Maybe a GBoard thing?
4) Screen Auto Brightness - Takes an age to organize itself. In the dark, it will blind you, before thinking to itself, that it is, indeed, night, and the screen should be a wee bit less bright. The exact opposite in the day - Very dim and then will eventually get off its backside and decide to brighten up the screen. Very annoying.
5) How do I change the name of my phone. It's not the Bluetooth and Wifi name. My car still picks it up as Huawei LON-L29, as do apps like Photosync and whilst connecting to my Mac.
6) Photos. Now this may not be a PD Specific issue, but when I transferred my 22,000 images across, they all came as a big jumbled mess. No date-wise organization. So looking for specific images, is well, impossible.
7) Music - No equalizer settings in the stock music app. For my specific purposes, unusable, because in my car's bluetooth radio, the bass is overwhelming.
So, apart from these minor points (and 1 big one), I love the phone. I wonder how they could possibly improve it...Firmware, Huawei! Firmware!
For photos delete the cache. That'll sort the jumbled up mess.
For Music Player Google removed the EQ option a few months ago, I hate Play Music now. I use Captune. It has its shortcomings but its the best EQ.
Keyboard - I use Swift with no problems.
My worst issues are the crappy screen protector (GG3) and the lack up updates. I'll be selling it shortly.
I'm enjoying my phone, the only gripe I have with it is the UPDATES.
As for keyboards Try downloading Blackberry Keyboard or Google Keyboard.
Thank you for your suggestions, guys.
I tried clearing the cache, but no joy there. I tried an app called Quickpic, that is apparently supposed to deal with this. Didn't help either.
I was wondering, even if I had to reimport all my image and video files, is there any way they could be sorted by date taken?
This is turning out to be as big of an issue as the notification one, as I depend on images and videos, to send and discuss with my clients. And needless to say, I can't find anything. So am relegated to carrying an iPhone 6s+ just for my media, so I can send the required files via email or WhatsApp. Really, Not an ideal situation.
I will try the BB Keyboard.
Regarding the packaged screen protector, agreed, it is appalling. Before I buy the 2.5/3D tempered glass screen protector, has anyone had any experience with it?
Bonerp, Captune works for me, Thank you.
Have any of you'll worked around the notification bug?
For example, WhatsApp notifications sometimes do not wake the screen, but when a second or third WhatsApp message comes through, it may wake...Or not.
Seriously, if this is such a widely publicized bug, why is Huawei not looking into this?

I tried a curved tempered glass protector and it was awful so binned it. It had tape on the edges and just didn't look good and lost sensitivity.
Have you tried clearing cache at the boot screen or from settings/storage? Might help with the notification bug.
I've sent Huawei several things to fix and just had a 'thank you' response and nothing more. I'm not aware of a notification bug though. I definitely had one on the mate 9 until the first pre release fix was received, but not on this one.
Only other thing I can suggest re pics is delete data, or delete google account, delete cache then add your account again.
How do you guys work around the copy-paste thing?
I mean to having to bring out a paper and pen for copying an email address, phone number, passage from a message or an email is just unacceptable, when this is a widely utilized convenience on other platforms and, I believe, some Android UI's too?
I have tried a few apps that claim they can do this, but no joy.
Also, sharing contacts from the contacts app, only allows vcard, text message and attach to email, no What'sApp, Outlook or any app, for that matter. Can this option be changed somewhere?
quick question
I am looking to get the mate 9 pro; which is the same phone as the PD, just without the fancy branding..
Are any of you on Tmobile in the USA, and, do you get 4G/LTE?
The reseller I have been emailing with on Amazon says you do NOT get 4GLTE on Tmobile in the USA with this phone, but I have read that you do.
Thanks if you can help with this! :good::good:

OnepLus 7T issues

So, I just wanted to name a few issues I've been having with my OP7T
1. wide angle camera doesnt focus in 90% of cases. manual tap to work sometimes helps but all in all the wide angle is almost unusable. tried factory reset, reverting back to stable OS build.. messing up with different camera app options..nothing helps
2. alarm clock volume keeps turning itself off.. I've tested it many times, the alarm simply doesnt ring.. I checked the volume just to see that the slider has gone all the way down.. Reseting the app fixes it for some time but than it goes back to being unusable
3. speakers are too loud even if you use them at 30% of max volume.. all above that makes the sound unbearable to listen
4. if I want to use the loudspeaker during a call, the person on the other side of the line immediately says that the sound quality has drastically changed/became worse
I do like the phone. I had Galaxy S10+ before this one and there is no way I would go back to that.. I wish these things would get sorted out. After all, a simple OS update can make the phone much better..
Thanks for taking some time to go through my blabbering
Same problems
I'm on Open Beta 8 (just recently updated to OB9)
1. Camera can't focus on low light at all. I think this is because 7T lacks laser autofocus which the pro version has.
With good lighting though, focus is as fast as other flagships.
2. Alarm works fine every time for me.
3. Try turning off Dolby Atmos. (CLICK HERE for the proper app and instructions)
4. People on the other end of the line can hear me clearly both on loudspeaker mode and normal phone.
I sold the phone yesterday.. Could not decide if I should buy the 8T or the S20+.. in the end I went with Samsung.. so far no regrets.. :good:

Samsung A3 2017 in 2022 - struggling

Hello, i own A3 2017 because that is the size phone i can handle. I have some questions i hope you can help me with.
1) i have data turned off most of the time. When i turn it on, suddenly i feel lag - phone is doing plenty of stuff in the background, most notably checking for google store updates. How can i turn off this thing ?
2) What else can i do ? The phone clearly has plenty of horse power because sometimes it works extremely fast. I click on messages or calls and it opens instantly, i open gallery, camera, same thing. But other times it will take seconds. Clearly something in the background is harming my experience. I disabled all the apps i could, prevented them notifies, removed their permissions, disabled all settings i could, applied other general tweaks i could find online. I cant root my phone since my main bank app that i need requires a stock rom.
3) Anything at all i can do to slightly improve camera ? I have it on default settings and dont know what any settings do nor can i find any guide which settings are best to use to get at least decent pictures.
there are some ways to help a bank app to work on the lineageOS 17 unofficial ROM. Check out debie's telegram group. And when you switched to LineageOS your phone will also be a lot faster, save you several Gigs of space. Also there is gcam that takes great night vision pictures

I am also using A7 2017 in 2023. I haven't rooted it either as I love using Samsung Pay. The best way to keep this device running quick is using the least storage possible. Mine is a 32GB variant, and at around 27GB it lags. As I clear more storage, its performance improves. If you will do the factory data reset then it will work really good for few months, so you can try that too.
About the camera, try lowering the exposure a bit and it gives some really aesthetic photos! You can also try food filter in the camera app as it really pops the colors and gives better results.
