What did you think this forum was about? They've been doing this since this the very first version was released, many years ago, its far from being anything new.
He doesn't mention other tabs cuz theres no exploits for the latest ones yet. If the hd10 is your choice, you'd have find an older gen to do something similar. You've found the right place to research that info. I suggest using the Search function here but find Googles along with the keywords youre searching and "XDA" much more easier to use and better results

Should I buy the Kindle Fire HD 8.9?

Hey guys.
I'm looking for a new tablet with a 1080p display. All the ones I had seen were 10"+, which is a tad too big for me. I like the idea of a smaller screen but keeping the high res.
My question is, after browsing through the Dev section and not seeing too many ROMs and in the Q&A there are a lot of issue threads, should I buy this tablet? How easy is it to flash stock or something to that accord if its bricked/ messed up? If any of you guys can give honest opinions, should I buy this tablet?
Thank you for your time.
-Riku
99% of the issues in the Q&A thread are due to the users' inability to pay attention and/or follow instructions. If you can't do that, then you should probably look somewhere else (the fact that you would ask that question, raises some red flags IMO).
The 2nd generation Kindle Fires were never intended to run custom ROMs. As a matter of fact, Amazon boasted that it could never be done. Considering that, I'd say we have quite a bit of development going for our devices. Our kernel is built from the ground up with a considerable amount of reverse engineering involved...and it's still under development. If you want an inexpensive tablet where everything works and has 100% functionality with no bugs whatsoever...you should probably look somewhere else.
However, if you want a powerful tablet with great value and you don't mind putting up with minor little annoyances while development grows AND you can pay attention & follow instructions, then this might be the tablet for you. No guarantees though.
I know what I am doing, mostly, so I can pretty much fix minor to bad bugs. I am considering this and the Note 8.0. I'm paranoid about specs so the full HD screen is a plus. Having trouble deciding though.

I guess it all depends on what you are looking for. You can get the KFHD8.9 for less, but the Note 8 has better specs. I'm not sure if you would find the same level of support in Note 8 forums that you would with the 2nd generation Kindle Fire forums. One thing's for sure though...they don't have Hashcode. <-- that's a done deal in my opinion
@soupmagnet
Wow, Hashcode knows his 'Droid. My only two things stopping me is the lack of a pressure sensitive pen and no AOSP/AOSPA. Do you think its possible to port/ build either?
EDIT: just seen that there is a PA port in progress.

See, I wouldn't actually use any of the Amazon services, I would try and get it as stock looking as possible. I also want to play N.O.V.A 3 and others.

[Q] filtering the models, focusing on 10in

most threads here are from not-10inch... including the sticks. they just list "ROMS" and all of them are for 8, 7in.
Where can i find the latest info for 10? or what is the best way you guys use to filter for the 10in only?
it is a completely different beast with its intel cpu ...feel those models should not even be bundled together.

You won't find much for the 10 in yet...unless I've been digging in the wrong places....
The only place I have found anything of use for the 10 is in the dev forums. You will find a great root ad custom recovery there, I got the cwm(unofficial)recovery and root installed on first attempt, but it is a dev forum, so don't expect to get a lot of answers there. I recommend DutchDanny's custom recovery, and you'll find what you need for root in the same thread.
I have found nothing interesting as far as ROMs go, though.
Good luck, and let me know if you find anything stable and useful for our tablets!
I imagine we will have our own forum once there is more out there that is specific to our device.
Have this changed recently? To be honest I'm using the 10in just for some website testing since it's the only Samsung browser i have... I still use the touchpad for having fun with Android. Can't beat that community.
but the x86 CPU on the 10in is always making me think i can do interesting stuff with this tablet... Ubuntu? FirefoxOS? Dedicated scummvm machine?

I agree that there is a lot of mixing and mismatching going on here. The only dedicated thread to the P5210 is the development thread and that isn't very interesting at all. Under this main thread of troubleshooting there should be three sub categories; 7", 8", and 10". This would segregate the tablets and keep like info together instead of sprue about as it is right now. But it is all good. Just have to, like you said, filter a wee bit.

Desire for a pure android experience (v500-›v510)?

Dear Sirs,
please forgive me for asking this, but from two days of searching on this forum I still cannot answer myself this.. (seems im not asking myself the right questions)
I have been an i-device user, but with a need for an 8inch tab i also decided its about time to try out some android awesomeness. Luckily as it seems LG offers this perfect size of 8.3" and a possibility of a pure android system. Since im from europe i can only find a stock LG version (non-GPA) which i really do not want. Imho, a crime much like cutting a nice glass of whisky with some coke. So the question is:
Can i buy the LGA version and transform it into a GPA version, without voiding my warranty? (Possibility to revert?) How hard is this to do, and what would be the best way?
Appreciate your time&effort,
Alexander

Conversion from a 500 to a 510 is currently not a known white or black magic incantation. The voodoo involved seems to be a few minor hardware differences that results in no wifi or bluetooth working when people attempt the switch.
Your fellow magic-users do appreciate it if you search first... However the proper search incantation must have eluded you in this case!
(hopefully you found this funny, as it was meant to be, and yes I even answered your question)
The closest you can get with a 500 is picking a rom that stays close to AOSP...
Thanks! A true gentleman and indeed quite amusing, life is better with a grain of satire I realise this must have been discussed before, but as a novice to this world, obviously my quarries had indeed been weak. In my defense though, there is a tonne of misinformation out there on the great webs.
So something like this would be the best bet?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g-pad-83/development/rom-android-5-0-lollipop-lrx21m-t2941207
And is there also a bulletproof way to restore to the original LGA state in case one needs to claim warranty?

I apologize for the late reply... I typically run CM12 myself I do not have direct experience with the rom you specified here.
You can restore the tablet to the factory condition. I just did it myself last night. I'll see if I can find the thread that documents the method that I use and add it to this post.
The approach that I use (and just used again last night) is detailed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2471370
Those instructions are for the G2 however I have used that app on both my G3 and my V500 to get them back to pure stock. If you have never plugged your tablet into your computer when it is in download mode, it will take a while for the drivers to install. Once they are installed you should not have to type anything in (if the program is prompting you for information you have not got it right yet). The instructions for the factory reset and download mode entry are not the correct key combinations, but otherwise the procedure does work...
Superb! Thanks alot. As you can see from my signature i have gone ahead an got myself one of theese. Im loving it in every way (except he doesnt wanna jive with airplay all to well), but once decluttered, the lg rom is not that bad. Knowing i can restore everything back, calms my mind about trying rooting and stuff. I heard even airplay can work better once rooted..

How is nobody talking about SoundCamp Support Ending?

The last few times I've opened up SoundCamp on my s9+ I've been notified support is ending on the 28th of December and it will no longer be made available on either Google Play or Galaxy Apps.
Those who have it can keep using it, but good luck getting it without going to a 3rd party store after!
No Pie support. No news on an updated version. Nada.
I'm kinda bummbed and can't find much except straggles of info online, not even an explanation as to the why? anybody wants to chime in on this?
Probably no-one is using it, first time I've heard of it

What blasphemy is this!
Just kidding, it wasn't so well publicised but it's a pretty fun wee thing to mess around with, it'll be sad to see it go, was actually very well fleshed out all be it a little gimmicky at times
Yeah, I just stumbled over Soundcamp these days. It's great, fun experience!
Do you have an idea which application substitutes Soundcamp best?
(see e.g. ask.audio/articles/samsung-kills-off-soundcamp-what-other-android-music-making-apps-are-there)
Would be great if one could make install's even in future.
Since I'm new here as a registered user: Where should I post to ask some experienced members, if they can investigate how to make Soundcamp possible to install even after tomorrow (28th of December, end of life of Soundcamp)?

Do we have TWRP yet?

Sorry for wasting space here, everyone. I was just wondering if the 3a XL has TWRP yet. I just ordered one and the first thing I do on a new device is install TWRP and root.
Thanks
You can root, but no TWRP yet. The 3 and 3 XL took just about a month. Shouldn't be too long now.
Troy owned a 3XL making it a sure thing for sooner rather than later. Someone with the knowledge could have made it within a fairly short time period since the work is already partially done over in flagship land:; An example would be the OP7, it already has TWRP, a half dozen ROMs, a couple kernals. I'm not saying it isn't coming to this device, it probably is given time. You do have to have someone working on it though or it never happens. Flar2 for instance has a 3aXL and thanks to him we have his kernal. This is how it works, the benefits of these various ROMs, TWRP, kernals, come from a fairly small pool of developers and if one or more of them does not pick up the gauntlet you've got handy tips on these pages but not much else.
Lets us hope that a few of them have seen the value in these devices...
Pixel 3a and XL will have TWRP.
Even the $100 Android phones have TWRP.
It is a matter of when, my guess would be within the next two weeks from now.

Seems like LOS will come for 3a(XL), so I bet we will see a twrp build soon.
Out of curiosity, because I come from a Samsung: what are the main differences between Pixel's stock firmware and LOS?
As far as I know LOS have a kind of dark mode already enabled (coming to stock with Q) and some privacy option added?
Is there anything more than this?

Out of curiosity, what makes you say it seems like we'll get LOS for the 3a(XL)? It would be a 100% buy for me if that were the case, just wasn't sure if a notable dev has picked one up and mentioned planning to do so or something and I've missed it, thanks!

Thanks! Didn't even think to check that, was thinking they seemed to be good devices for LOS but hadn't heard anything yet so now I'm hopeful.
I'm really happy when the custom roms come out
What I was trying to say gents is that this device doesn't appear to be all that popular to me. Right now there are 627 threads open on the OP7 section compared to 62 here and that phone came out after. I'm BTW not counting the advertising section called reviews which will typically have 30, 40, 50 threads for every device.. I have never seen a less active device section on this forum than this one and I go back to before android started and have had all the Nexus devices except one, all the Galaxy S and Note devices accept 2 and I'm not going to list all the rest of the random devices I've had because you get the idea. I'm not sure what this phone is doing in terms of sales volume but I am sure that if they are being sold they are not being sold to enthusiast like us because if they were those owners would be here. I think some of you folks are kidding yourselves about the amount of development that is going to go on here. This is one of those cases where I would like nothing better than to be wrong but I'm not seeing any crow eating in my future.
I certainly hope your wrong but, I am afraid as you are that this device,,,,albeit a great one,,,,isnt getting the attention by devs. I know it is still too soon to tell and all that. But, if you go off past popular devices, and how fast development sprang up since it was released, this one seems lagging. Lets hope the future is bright for this device and dev support.

I bought the not xl version- I get the same vibe you're picking up. I think it's selling, but probably not to many enthusiasts as other phones. Maybe people are buying it because they actually went to use it as a phone? I think after the nexus line crashed, I think people have looked elsewhere for development phones. I don't have a one plus phone, but they seem to release kernels and factory images, which helps development. I'm sure google will do the same.
In other news, I've built aosp and los for sargo. Full disclosure- I haven't flashed anything yet, I haven't even opened the box; so I can't say how well the ROMs run. I'm sure bonito will build just fine too. aosp just needed the drivers/binaries from the website. For los, I used the extract files script and the stock images. The point is that we seen to have ROM support already, but maybe just low interest from the modding community.
Could it be the forums aren't hopping specifically *because* there's so little dev at this point?
I'd expect it to be light when TWRP isn't even around yet. I would expect it to pick up quite a bit once TWRP drops, though.

I do wish the forums were consolidated for the two devices. Then it would seem busier . I think there would be a bit of synergy since the two devices share so much. Sorry for the OT. I'll dust off my twrp repos and see if I can cook something up.
I was surprised they didn't combine them and just have two different development sub-sections, I've been on other devices where they did that and it seemed to work well. As to the lack of TWRP or other development I don't really think that's it although it's certainly a contributor. IMO you would have many more people asking general questions as you can see everywhere else, there are a lot of people who come to XDA but don't root. It really appears the either the phone isn't in too many hands or those hands belong to those pesky non phone people.
Actually...

Dirty Unicorns has an RC out for bonito (3a XL) dated 23 May - you can grab it now. (According to IDM, it is 1.197 GB large.)
Nothing new on the TWRP front for bonito - official or otherwise.
Many of the phones out there seem to have come from a T-Mobile trade-in offer that made the devices nearly free after credits. Problem is that for most of these devices, they'll be carrier locked and in turn bootloader locked for a while. Users have resigned themselves to unrooted optimizations until these locks are gone. Hopefully development will mirror all four of the 3rd gen devices as they pretty similar.
Sargo's top of my list right now for a phone upgrade (my S4 got me thru so many years), but without TWRP and LOS I just can't bring myself to buy it.
Never done any work on android before (besides flashing of course), but I'll throw my hat in the ring and try to get a TWRP build together this weekend.
Mind if I DM ya @gee one when I inevitably get stuck somewhere?
